PREFACE TO STUDENTS A personal message from Lynn Troyka to students Many of you as writers have much in common with me. Sure, I've been writing longer, so I've had more practice, and lots of rules are cemented in my head by this time (though some stubbornly refuse to stick, and I still need to look them up). Rather, our shared experiences during the act of writing define our commonalities. After all, we're each trying to put into words ideas worthy of someone else's taking the time to read them. When I write, I'm often unsure of how to begin (starting in the middle and then working backward and forward usually helps). Not infrequently, I'm stuck for examples sufficiently effective to get my point across (running my thoughts past my friends can often get me going). Somewhat regularly, the precise expression that I'm looking for eludes me as I rummage through the clutter of words in my mind (using a thesaurus commonly helps me sort things out, as long as I attend to the subtle differences in meanings of synonyms). I offer this book to you as my partners in the process of writing, hoping that its pages suggest strategies that enhance your abilities to give voice to your thoughts. When I was an undergraduate years ago, handbooks weren't as common as they are now. Questions about writing nagged at me, and no one seemed to have the answers I sought. One day, browsing through the library, I found a dust-covered book sitting on the wrong shelf. Its title included the words "handbook" and "writers." I read that book hungrily and often. Back then, I could never have imagined that someday I might write such a book myself. About the Author

Lynn Quitman Troyka earned her Ph.D. at New York University and taught for many years at the City University of New York (CUNY), including Queensborough Community College; the Center for Advanced Studies in Education at the Graduate School; the graduate program in Language and Literacy at City College; and, as Senior Research Associate, in the Instructional Resource Center, CUNY

Former editor of the Journal of Basic Writing (1985-1988), Dr. Troyka has published in journals such as College Composition and Communication, College English, and Writing Program Administration and in books from Southern Illinois Press, Random House, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and Heineman. She wrote the composition/rhetoric essay for the Encyclopedia of English Studies and Language Arts (Scholastic, 1993), as well as the basic writing essay for the Encyclopedia of Rhetoric (1994). She has conducted workshops at numerous colleges and universities and at national and international meetings.

Dr. Troyka is the author of many textbooks, including the Simon & Schuster Handbook for Writers, Sixth Edition (Prentice Hall, 2002); the Simon & Schuster Handbook for Writers, Third Canadian Edition (Pearson Education, 2002); the Simon & Schuster Quick Access Reference for Writers, Second Canadian Edition (Pearson Education, 2004); Structured Reading, Sixth Edition, with Joseph W. Thweatt (Prentice Hall, 2003); and Steps in Composition, Seventh Edition, with Jerrold Nudelman (Prentice Hall, 1999).

Dr. Troyka is a past chair of the Two-Year College Association (TYCA) of NOTE, the Conference on College Composition (CCCC), the College Section of NOTE, and the Writing Division of MLA. She was named Rhetorician of the Year in 1993; earned the Nell Ann Pickett Award for Service in 1995; and received the 2001 CCCC Exemplar Award, the highest CCCC award given for scholarship, teaching, and service. She serves on the NCTE Leadership Committee for Preparing Future Faculty (PFF); a project of the Council of Graduate Schools and the American Association of Colleges and Universities.
