Looking and Writing is an introductory guide for students asked to write a visual analysis for the first time. Written with the beginning student in mind, the text provides guidelines for the selection, analysis, and presentation of images found in museums, galleries, or online settings. Other chapters discuss the use of symbols and signs in communication and the cultural precepts of how we process visual information.
Looking and Writing includes:
- a step-by-step list of questions that should be considered when looking for a visual image on which to write
- suggestions for using images from online museum and Internet sites
- skill tests that ask students to apply the vocabulary and lessons introduced in the chapter
- the presentation of a variety of analytic methodologies drawn from the humanities and the social sciences
- ten images drawn from a variety of world cultures and media as well as web addresses for additional images mentioned in the text
- a list of suggested readings on visual analysis and composition
