Beginning with the arrival of the first Americans via the land bridge, this comprehensive book explores the major ancient cultures that arose and flourished in North, Central, and South America until about the 12th century. Among these are the Maya, the Anasazi, the Moche, and the Mound Builders. Emphasis is placed upon native religious lore and rituals and the technical ingenuity of native peoples. Although written for middle school students, the content is appropriate for other levels as well.

About the Author
Suzanne Strauss Art is the author of ten books about early cultures geared for middle school students. She taught history at Fay School, a private school in Southborough, Massachusetts, for sixteen years. Currently a full-time writer, she still finds time to visit local middle school classrooms to share her love of ancient and medieval cultures the children.
