Native America on the Eve of Conquest: The Story of the First Americans, Book II

Editorial Reviews

Book Description
This is a lively, extremely comprehensive book about the major culture groups living in the Americas at the time of the European "encounter." It picks up the story of the First Americans from where it left off in the first volume of the series, Ancient Times. Each chapter in Part I focuses upon the peoples of a particular region of North America - the northeast, the southeast, the plains, the southwest, and the far west. Part II is devoted to an in-depth study of the Incas and the Aztecs. Particular emphasis is placed upon the role of religion and story-telling in the lives of the people.

The book is written for middle school students. Each chapter concludes with helpful review questions as well as suggestions for further reading and enrichment activities.

About the Author
Suzanne Strauss Art taught history and social studies for 16 years at a private school in Massachusetts. During that time, she also wrote a series of ten "kid-friendly" history books, designed to pique a student's curiosity and inspire him/her to delve more deeply into the "why's and wherefore's" of cultures that existed long ago. The subjects of her books range from ancient Egypt to late imperial China. Today, when she is not writing, Suzanne visits classrooms in her area to share her love of history with middle school students.
