Book Description
Northerners were split over how to respond to the South when it broke away from the Union in 1861. Many supported Abraham Lincoln's use of military force to keep Southern states from seceding. Others, however, wanted to avoid bloodshed at all costs. This collection of diary excerpts, letters, and other primary sources explores the many opinions that surrounded this unique dilemma.
