This is the only book that covers all of the aspects of performance management in banking : 1. the analysis of performance measurement is very good even though, the coverage of financial data is overweight with respect to the rest of the book 2. the project approach is excellent and the various "pitfalls" described are so true that the people that wrote it necessarily had a good project experience, only problem is that the system architectures described did not evolve with the new edition (the word "data warehouse" is evoked once or twice) 3. As usual with this type of books, the "using the information" chapters are a bit a dry, even thought some interesting ideas are described regarding "customer information" In summary, a must read for any person trying to implement a performance indicators or Balanced Scorecard systm in its bank ("financial institutions" in the title is actually retail or commercial banking) PS : I am not an E & Y employee ... so this is not an advertising review

This is a small book that goes to the point, It have a section for each type of personality that have a small description of it, the way that they solve problems, their style of leadership, their creative expression, how do they work on teams, how the have to deal with stress, how they learn, and tips for personal growth. Also in the later chapters, this book have two pages that describes the team roles that each personality prefers.

I am a wedding planner (eventsbykaren@hotmail.com) and if you aren't using a planner, you are nuts, and if you are and they haven't read this book, they are nuts! All people planning a wedding should read this book. Even if you don't read it and only use it as a reference then you still should buy this book. A wedding is a one shot deal and if you haven't planned one before, trust me, you have NO IDEA what it takes! There is a reason why planners make good money. This is one book that I recommened to all brides, mothers, fiances, and planners regardless of if you are using a coordinator or not.

If you are on a mission to plan a fantastic wedding, this is the book to read. This is the 3rd wedding book I have read in the last few months, and by far the most useful! It has great advice on how to get organized and plan the perfect wedding. I would recommend it to anyone planning a wedding.

This is by far the best wedding book available. The author is a mega wedding planner and you can tell why after reading the book. My fiance and I both read the book when we first got engaged and loved it! I am the groom and I learned a lot. I went from totally naive to getting a bunch of inside tips on getting the most bang for our buck. It made my involvement in the plans really enjoyable.

This book certainly looks impressive on your shelf, and it's a fairly thorough reference book. However, I have found it difficult to read (dry, boring) when I am not motivated by some particular thing that I am looking up. In fact, I have never made it through a single chapter from start to finish. This is probably a great book for epilepsy fellows. On the other hand, as a neurology resident who plans to stay a generalist, I found it to be overkill.

The special feature of the book is the in depth treatment of both the electro-optic effects and the addressing schemes of liquid crystal displays elucidating their interdependence. After basic explanations readily understandable for students and stimulating for engineers, physicists and chemists, the reader is gradually led to the latest developments such as vertically aligned and mixed mode TN-displays, compensation foils, multiple line and low power addressing, transistor driven LCOS-devices with DRAM and SRAM addressing and TFT-addressing of transmissive displays with a 92% aperture ratio.
The results are analytically derived and not merely stated to enhance insight and the capability to tailor displays to individual needs or to perform novel designs. Towards this aim the propagation of light with the help of Jones vectors, four different characterizations of the state of polarization and the operation as well as the passive and active matrix addressing of all LCDs, like nematic, polymer dispersed, guest host and bistable devices is explained. Besides the mainstream twisted and supertwisted nematic LCDs attention is drawn to bistable ferroelectric, chiral nematic and modified nematic LCDs as they are most promising for future portable low power systems.
Tables on display formats and units for the measurement of displays finally render the book suitable as a reference for experts working in the field and as a textbook for universities or display courses.
The forefront of research is reached by the treatment of plastic substrates, the replacement of vacuum processes by less expensive printing and low temperature fabrication of a-Si- and poly-Si-TFTS.

NOT! DIFFICULT TO READ, A GREAT BOOK!.......2006-06-11

I DO NOT AGREE that Dr. Leuder's book is "difficult to read. Style and composition are poor." The reviewer does not consider that English is a second language for Dr. Leuder.

I have read many of Dr. Leuder's English language papers, and I believe him to be one of the most innovative pioneers of lcds, and recently of flexible lcds. He has trained a small army of P.H.D.'s about flexible display technologies, and his papers were lauded by dozens and dozens of commercial companies at the annual SID shows.

I very carefully read this entire book, and I found it to be a good primer for the bachelor level student, and full of lots of innovative ideas for the experienced lcd practitioners.

I especially enjoyed his chapters about flexible display technologies, and reread them over and over again.

I strongly encourage you to consider this book.

This work is a major summary of complex technology which is readily understood by way of diagrams and references to meaningful applications. It includes the mathematical support needed for the expert and yet brings the newcomer a breadth and depth which is outstanding. These comments from a physicist working in the field who yet develops practical products.

The book is difficult to read. Style and composition are poor.
The author overuses formulas while lacking clear formulations.
Don't recommend it for beginers and intermediates. While if you are in advanced category you may not need this book at all. Just to give you a reference point - I earned my PhD in physiscs/math. General conclusion: waste of trees, time and money. My sorry to the author for a bad review.

Rembrandt is the great master.......2007-06-07

This book explain a little about Rembrandt technique and some details in his paints. You can understand how could he painted so beutiful arts. But you won't be Rembrandt reading this book. Only the technique is not sufficient to be a master!
But, if you are a Rembrandt fan, you have to read this book!

Brilliant.......2007-05-12

This book is generous with loads of quality pictures of the masters work and an equal amount of text for the reader of history and the technical , a good buy certainly worth the money , I really enjoyed this and I suggest it to any one with even just a passing interest in Rembrandt and an insight into how he produced his work , they actually found some of his dna in his paintings (i bet that makes you curious). This and the other book " Rembrandt's Eyes by Simon Schama" is another beauty possibly a bit better than this one Schama's book spend the first half talking a about Peter Paul Rubens and the dreams Rembrandt had of being his equal , both are great companions to each other I recommend them together.

There isn't much more I can say, which hasn't already been said to reveal the great merits of this book. However I think the sheer quantity of 5 star ratings speaks volumes. This book is essential for any academic or personal study of Rembrandt, especially so for a painter as I am. On top of all the incredible detailed scientific analysis, the text is written very clearly and is even a pleasure to read. Above all, the detail shots of his paint surface, are breath taking and most instructive for any painter. They utilized different levels of magnification to reveal his work from the entirety of the picture down to the microscopic level. This book has revolutionized my studio practice!

De Wetering : You should pay the dinner !.......2007-01-20

This book is not easy to evaluate, at a first sight is a very irregular book, amazing in many passages but extremely boring in many others, a whole chapter dedicated to the canvas support !?, with a great mass of technical information about thread density and weave, I think it is too much, a very important Rembrandt's trick like "glazing and sweeping" (that it is supossed he created this technique) is just overviewed when it is perhaps one of the constituents for the most amazing passages in many of his paintings.
My conclusion is that despite of Rembrandt's Project and a lot of scholars studying his masterpieces is very, but very little what we know. How he commited his works is an enigma like in Vermeer's case, so there are a lot of books about them but very little valuable information

Disecting the past........2007-01-20

Old fashioned detective work and modern technical tools means that soon we'll even know what these great artists had for breakfast on any given day. An excellent piece and more than worth the money.

Based on research questioning about 500 executives who took IPOs between 1986 and 1996. So, most IPOs came from companies who had been profitable for a few years. After the collapse of the Internet stocks, the context is similar, but I believe such profit records may not be as important as during 1986-96.

Published in 1999. So, it has comments to imply "being first makes the company valuable without profits".

About the authors and their style

Authors are experienced in their job of bringing IPOs.

This book is not at all in the class of books by Al Ries and Jack Trout, but more like a text book, covering every related point (from text book point of view). There is no prioritization or difference in emphasis of the importance of various issues involved.

Their diagram on cover of book is confusing because they have used 2-dimensions to show a linear 1-dimension process, which essentially are their recommended steps.

Book's Message

1. Define goal/success. IPO may not be the best way to achieve that.

2. Plan and start working on IPO at least one year ahead of the need.

3. Many specific to-do items: · Revise salaries as variable salaries that include stocks rather than just cash. · Plan personal estates. Give gifts before IPOs to family members to minimize future tax liability. Hire CPA for this planning. · Hire Earnst & Young early. · Clean books of accounts-use GAAP. · Build strong executive team. · Start working like a public company at least one year before-that is-create quarter-to-quarter profitability guidance and exceed them. Create reports such as needed by SEC. · Build external Board. Create committees of Board members.

Useful appendices span: outline for a business plan; selecting the stock market; registration exemptions and resale restrictions; overview of the SEC and SEC rules and regulations; simplified registration under the small business disclosure system; and glossary.

Strengths include: the concise factual (dry) writing style; good use of exhibits and checklists; and useful easily-accessible content addressing legal, accounting, reporting, board issues (amongst others).

Weaknesses include: need for more sidebar success story anecdotes (which integrate the steps); mostly US focus; and relatively superficial analysis evidence supporting the success factors and `journey' metaphor.

Overall, a very useful working book, to be read with something like `Confessions of a Venture Capitalist' (ISBN 0446526800) or `E-boys' (ISBN 0812930959), for a fuller life-cycle, energetic view of the IPO journey.

IPO handbook for CEOs.......1999-12-03

I found this book had just the right amount of detail for the CEO without becoming tiresome. It gives a very good overview of the IPO process and provides plenty of recommendations to guide you along the way.

This book is a very interesting read, featuring first hand accounts of the Holocaust. The fact that the book is entirely primary source materials makes it all the more interesting. These are the words of the men who did the deeds and their reaction to it. The book uses letters, diaries, interviews, reports, and all kinds of other materials for sources. It is an interesting read, but the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is although it is a great source, some of the chapters are rather dry, but overall the book is well worth the read.

German precision and exactness to the ultimate extreme.......2004-03-15

"The Good Old Days" is a haunting and disturbing glimpse into the Holocaust. This book chronicles a number of events associated with the Nazi attempts to exterminate the entire Jewish people from the globe. Certainly any story of the Holocaust is disturbing to a rational person but "The Good Old Days" presents these events through the words/tales of people who were there - soldiers, killers, non-Jewish citizenry. Most of the events described are related through several people (making the reading a bit tedious) and in all cases the stories, while slightly different in detail - and almost always apologetic when told after the passage of time - would make my stomach wrench at how indifferently the waste of human life was taken. This is especially true in cases where stories are supported by diaries written at the time of the events. It is a oft used generalization that the Germans are a people of exactness and precision. This has never been more true than in assiocation with the Holocaust. The SS and its minions went about their gruesome business with the efficiency stereotypically expected of the Germans - they kept exacting notes, approached it impassively as to not become emotionally attached to the situation (or they were removed from the situation - generally voluntarily, or so it is claimed), and strove to generate more efficient, quick and "humane" ways to dispose of those felt inferior. The passages in this book are presented without any candy coating and thus this text is not for the faint of heart. Yet in doing so the reader is truly left with a feeling of collective human guilt that any culture could perpetrate such acts and in such a detacted fashion. To say that no one in Germany cared about what was happening is unfair, yet it is fair from this text and others on the subject that many were active participants and while some revelled in the experience - which is disturbing enough - most acted as murderers out of duty to service, comrades, Fatherland, and/or their Fuhrer - and this is a TRULY DISTURBING thought. How far mankind is capable of sinking.

This is a solid 4 star effort. It is only the repetitive nature of the text that keeps it from being a 5 star book. Having said this, it is clear why the editors chose to present each story multiple times from several sources: for impact by showing that these were not simply acts of a few that no one knew about or that were ebing acting fought against - in short to show the impassive brutality and collusion of cause. "The Good Old Days" is recommended reading for anyone trying to understand the Holocaust and how such an event so pivotal in the history of man could have happened. Yet beware of the content going into it - it is highly disturbing and often graphic.

An absolute necessity in Nazi war crime literature.......2003-02-23

The title suggests this book is comprised of reminiscing reflections from sadistic, self-satisfied Nazi war criminals. In fact, most of the observations in written and spoken testimonies, diaries and documents, suggest the ýPerpetrators and Bystandersý were appalled. Frequently, however, they were only bothered by the manner of the beatings and executions. Those whose material contributed to this book had to see starved women beg for their lives-- soon to be corpses pulled from gas chambers by hooks on sticks inserted into their mouths to make for easy dragging-- Nazi mass executions of Jews by bullet in which many near dead tumbled into communal graves begged to be shot again, or even crowbar execution beatings by SS-supervised Ukrainians, and so on, before returning to enjoy their privileged lives away from real military action.

In a section on the camps, an SS Doctor, Johannes Kremer, Mengele-like, describes how he ýreservesý certain starving prisoners who are particularly interesting to him medically, for warm disections. On the next entry of his diary he says: "ýThere was roast hare for lunchýa real fat legýwith dumplings and red cabbageý" His remark, chosen for the title of this chapter: "Food in the officersý mess excellent."

There are a number of photographs throughout the book, which were taken in spite of it being forbidden.

For those of us born after 1945, there is an impenetrable membrane between us and a proper sense of these important recent events. (If you visit Auschwitz/Birkenau you may be struck by how modern everything looks. It was not that long ago.) We may ask how it is possible for civilized people with families to commit and tolerate such affronts to humanity, and then quietly return to their lives with a clear conscience. Hauntingly, there is an even worse question, if I had been born in the right time and place, and had been fed the right propaganda, could I have done it? In some way, am I doing it now?

Such books as this make me mournful and trouble my sleep. I consider this necessary reading for anyone hoping see a little deeper into this terrible odyssey shared by perpetrators and victims.

I also recommend Nazi Hunter, the Wiesenthal File, by Alan Levy, which is by no means similar in style or perspective, but contains a wealth of information.

Very Powerful.......2002-04-14

This book really makes one shiver. I have read a number of books on the holocaust and World War 2 and this book absolute is the rawest of the books covering the genocide. That is not to say the book had a blow by blow account of the methods of killing, but just the history of this group of solders and the off handed way the mass killing was described. The people doing this killing were just normal guys, not unlike friends, family or myself. Wow, it is just amazing to me the way they try to justify what they were in charge of, the crimes against humanity that they committed. That is what was so disturbing to me. It is much easier to think that the mass killing was done by some group of homicidal maniacs let out of the asylum and given guns that that is not the case.

The details you get here are very hard to take once you have finished the book and think about it. This is one of the few books that for weeks after I finished it I would continue to think about it I do not think I can recommend this book enough; it really gives you a feel for the tremendous crime that took place. You will not be able to stop reading the book until you have completed it. I could go on and on. Even if you are not overly interested in WW 2 or the Holocaust you should read this book, there is no way you will not be griped by it.

The good old days and sleepless nights.......2002-03-11

Read it but be careful! The abyss will look back at you. The reports, letters and diary excerpts... This is really the backside of the nazi grandiose facade. Not forget the Holocaust? This book will never let you forget.
