Book Description
very great player knows that success in poker is part luck, part math, and part subterfuge. While the math of poker has been refined over the past 20 years, the ability to read other players and keep your own "tells" in check has mostly been learned by trial and error.
But now, Joe Navarro, a former FBI counterintelligence officer specializing in nonverbal communication and behavior analysis—or, to put it simply, a man who can tell when someone's lying—offers foolproof techniques, illustrated with amazing examples from poker pro Phil Hellmuth, that will help you decode and interpret your opponents' body language and other silent tip-offs while concealing your own. You'll become a human lie detector, ready to call every bluff—and the most feared player in the room.
Customer Reviews:
It really does pay for itself :).......2007-05-16
After getting this (I am a Hellmuth fanactic) upon its release, I read it in like 20 mintues, as I consume poker literature at an incredible speed, during a point at which I was going to the card room twice a week, this book helped me identify these clear indications of someones emotions, as in how comfortable, how stressed, etc. This really only works I'd imagine at really low limits, b/c part of getting to that next level is making sure that you dont do this stuff. But even pros and people at final tables do things that a reader of this text could pick off. Par ex: Matusow on HSP S3 would literally stop talking mid-sentance if he picked up a big hand or hit a flop.
My favorite read that I picked up myself was at a 1/2NLHE home game that runs with some local businessmen. I called a guy with second pair in a huge pot, after he'd check min-raised the flop, which he had done with a set a couple orbits before (I flat called at this point) the turn was a brick, and he put me in. The dude was totally hugging himself (you'll see)and had his feet giving the weak tell. I was able to pick up 300 in this spot thanks to the book, rather than relying on betting patterns or just evaluating the strength of my own hand (JT on a AJ64 board) Dude had 76o...THis books won me more big pots than I can count. Now if I can keep my bluffing % under 50% (75 while drunk) I'll be ok :)
Fantastic!!!.......2007-05-15
I bought this book just before a trip I took to vegas last month and it paid for itself many times over. If you learn nothing from the book other than how to conceal your own tells you will come out a winner. For those of you who think they have no tells, believe me, you do. Joe Navaro was able to spot tells in players as difficult to read as chris fergusson. I've read tons of poker books and this by far is second only in terms of importance to 'Theory of Poker'. And the only reason I put it second is because without a basic understanding of the game nothing else matters. But for those of you who know poker this book will teach you how to pick up on the body language and such of your opponents. Oh yeah. About my vegas trip. I would say this book accounted for about $1,000 of my winnings that weekend (Playing 1-3 NL). In several situations I was able to pick up tells that allowed me to make calls I normally wouldnt have and also to make plays with nothing based primarily on this book. Good luck!
Must have.......2007-05-13
An excellent book, although, could do without Phil's "validation" sidebars, which just usually says "yea this is right, it happened to me once when..." and then goes on to just repeat the text that Joe just went over. Move over Philly boy, and let Joe do the talking.
Also, you can check out Joe's articles published in the monthly FBI magazine when he was an active agent. They are on FBI web site. You'll have to do a little snooping about to find them, but they're there.

I have a couple of MR. Hellmuths dvd's and they are very very good...I will buy anything he comes out with....I've been happy with all the things I've got of his....shari
Excellent.......2007-05-12
I got this book thinking that it was just going to be a reprint of Caro's book of tells. I was pleasantly surprised when i started reading it and found a lot of new and interesting info. It's an easy read (no pun intended) and has definitely improved my game against my opponents who are unaware of their tells. I am now able to see the other people who watch for tells and read their "false" tells also! An excellent companion to strategy is being able to read your opponent. I have already made way more than this book cost me by using the info it gave me. 5 STARS

Sure helped me.......2007-04-14
As I read some of the other reviews of this great book I was amazed - I guess they didn't read the same book I did. This book has made a huge difference in the way I play, how often I win and most importantly how much I enjoy the game.
If you want to win and enjoy the process this is a must read.
Winning Hold'em Poker.......2007-03-30
If knowing the correct starting hands to play was all it took to play winning poker, we would all be winning players. This book goes into detail on playing your opponents, in spite of and because of the two cards in your starting hand.
The best chapter, in my opinion, is the one titled Minimal Math. It was also the hardest. I had to read it several time. However, at the conclusion I had a good understanding of how the math works, and how I could apply it to each hand I play; in effect, having the mechanics to play high percentage poker.
A lot of the points in the book were not secrets. They had been mentioned in other poker books I have read. What made this book good study material is that the authors did not merely "mention" playing tips; they gave clear explanations as to why the pros play the way they do.
For me, the book is well worth the time involved in reading it. It is not light reading. It is a text book for serious poker study.
A wealth of inside information.......2007-03-05
"Secrets the Pros Won't Tell You" is a first-rate insider's guide to all the essential components of winning poker play. Comprehensive and easy to understand, this book is loaded with smart advice that can make a major difference in your game. Everything you need to gain a solid understanding of poker is here --- from strategic basics, to more advanced tactics, table image, money management, tournament play, calculating odds, and more. For anyone who wants to start winning money at poker, or simply win more, this book is a great place to begin.

An easy book to read and understand.

oppponent layed down 3 kings , I had a queen high.
must have absorbed knowlwdge from the book.
another mediocre book...that could have been good.......2006-09-27
I actually would give it a two and a half rather than a three but that option was not available. It is not a terrible book; it is just somewhat boring to read, very repetitive and not very original. If you have the time and the patience to read this book through a couple of times there is actually some very good information in here. The problem is mostly in the editing; I really struggled to finish it. Many ideas are re-presented through the course of the book which made me think they didn't care if I read it or not they were just happy to make a sale. Poor editing from people who have written many books between them is close to unforgivable.
Also I felt they were very concerned over page count and consequently "filled" many pages with ramblings and beginner poker tips; certainly not "pro secrets". If it had been more tightly edited to reflect the title's promise-condensed by about forty or fifty pages of the novice level fluff-I might have given it a four to four and a half. Which is why I settled on my three rating. I would recommend a rereading of "Theory of Poker" by Sklansky if you want "pro" level material.

Book Description
Libraries' and bookstores' resources on bullying are often limited to picture books and parenting books. This book is for those who deal with the worst bullying: preteens and teens.
Time to Tell 'Em Off! offers advice to ridiculed/bullied kids and teens, based on the author's experience as a target. The author sympathizes with ridiculed young people, explains why certain people are harassed, and provides coping and self-defense strategies.
Customer Reviews:
It changed our school.......2005-07-31
Our grade school had a bullying problem. After reading this book, and now armed with the resources I needed, I demanded and received constructive changes at our school. A bullying course was implemented as well as a number of other changes. While chaparoning a field trip 2 months after the policy changes, the differences in how the children talked to each other were something to be proud of.
A great resource.......2005-04-14
"Time to Tell 'em Off!" is a fantastic resource for kids - and their parents. The focus is on building and projecting the self-confidence of the victim - and helping the victim to recognize that the fault lies with the bullies. The tone of the book is excellent; kids feel as if they are "talking" with someone who has been there and can successfully verbalize their feelings. "Time to Tell 'em Off!" is a quick, reassuring read full of excellent tips and strategies that can be used immediately. Ms. Miller has created a real gem!
Practical advice on how to survive teasing & worse.......2005-04-07
Deanna Miller's Time To Tell 'em Off! is a straightforward book addressed to young people, and filled from cover to cover with practical advice on how to survive teasing, harassment, hate speech, and ridicule in daily life -- especially at school. Individual chapters address a range of issues from how to cope with peer pressure using real-life examples, to how to avoid the destructive effects of depression and rage, to sensible advice on how to look and act, and much more. Written in direct, accessible, easy-to-understand language for kids in junior high and up, Time to Tell 'Em Off! is a highly recommended social survival guide for young people everywhere and should be included in every school and community library collection in the country.
Advice you can't get just anywhere.......2004-04-17
This is a valuable book because it talks directly to kids about realistic ways to deal with bullying, not just the standard fluff that my teachers and administrators thought would work when I was a kid with a problem like this. There is bullying as a 'concept', and then there is bullying in the real world, and this book deals with the latter kind. The author knows that the pretty solutions sometimes just don't work, and there are lots of good tips here about how an adolescent or a younger kid can maintain their self-esteem, avoid fights, and deal with bullies face to face.

Cute Title, No Substance.......2007-03-14
There are a lot of cute instances in this book, however, nothing of real substance in relation to how God truly intervenes. Cute book, but empty.
Funny but true!.......2000-04-03
While walking through a very rough relationship with my mother God put this book in my life. I laughed and cried all the way through it. I love Cathy because she is real. The things that she has gone through and how God gave her wisdom and grace to laugh through it. He will give you the wisdom and grace to laugh too, and Cathy and her annointing can help you get through too.
The Real Deal.......2000-03-18
I've been fortunate to know Cathy and her family for a number of years. Trust me: Her books are from the heart and from her experiences. She shares deep truths with humor, and with compassion. You'll see yourself in this book somewhere along the way, and the Lord will speak to you through it. Enjoy!
Cathy is hilarious and yet she speaks to our deepest needs........1999-04-08
I was honestly offended by Cathy's title and yet something drew me in a powerful way to her book. I am so glad I read it. I laughed and cried through each chapter and shared the insights I had gained with my friends. Now I love her title, I love her book, and I love her. You are missing out on a big blessing, if you pass this book up. I can't wait to read her other books, because I know they will be just as powerful!
Excellent reading for victory in difficult relationships.......1998-11-27
Cathy's book on interpersonal relationships is a "must read" for all who strive for excellence in developing healthy relationships God's way. I have laughed, cried and laughed more in this straight-to-the-point "manual" for overcoming difficult relationships- as Cathy has shared in humility her own personal struggles to overcome difficult relationships victoriously. It has challenged me to not settle for anything less than God's best in my relationships with all people.
