This is a book to help you get into better shape. While the book covers stretching and cardio exercise to varying degrees, it clearly spends most of its exercise routines having the reader lift weights. The book intends to accomplish its goal of getting you into better shape by doing it in phases, with each one having different goals (too lengthy to go into here).

Phase one is the Bronze phase (5 weeks), then the Silver phase (5 weeks), followed by a Gold phase (9 weeks) and finally ends with the Platinum phase (3 weeks), where the goal is to get a body like LL's. An additional phase, the Diamond phase, is included just for the ladies. There's a ton of info in here on just about every fitness topic and I really liked that throughout the book, there are these "rap session" sections where LL interviews experts in the fitness field and current information is shared- this is a big plus. LL fans will also like the LL trivia that is scattered throughout the book.

One of the more interesting and informative fitness books on the market, I liked it. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you have a bad shoulder that keeps you from lifting weights.

**Note**
Unlike some of the reviews here, this has nothing to do with an appreciation, or lack thereof, of his music or acting. It also doesn't have anything to do with his speaking or writing style (everyone has a style, whether it seems more educated, basic, or street... if you don't like his style, move on to another one, but don't deduct points for your own dislikes). It's also not about whether the information is regurgitated from someone else (if it's been repeated and was so important that everyone knows it, there wouldn't be a point to this book and you wouldn't be reading it, now would you?). This book is about the information provided about nutrition and working out.

That said, this book has a great deal of info. Cool J does an excellent job of breaking down the grocery store so that anyone can get the message (example - at the store, remember veggies on the left, meat in the back, milk on the right, don't eat what's in the middle). He includes a very detailed workout plan and includes illustrations for nearly every exercise recommended. He backs up all of his information with approvals and interviews with trained professionals. There is even a detailed section about the necessity of stretching, which isn't included in a lot of fitness guides.

Most complaints about this book have to do with the inclusion of information people already know and about this book starting too slowly. However, the people complaining need to realize that no fitness guide is the end-all complete fitness guide. Most fitness books and guides are made so that you can still adapt their guidelines to your lifestyle. That's part of the reason why they contain so many exercises and routines. If you work out all the time and have already applied his food tips, skip to the silver or gold workout. If you have never worked out before and eat six bags of doritos a day, start your new routine at page one. The information for everyone is in the book.

All that said, I do have a few complaints about the book - the amount included in the platinum workout, the charts, and the gym membership requirement. If a person is to stick with the recommendations straight through the platinum workout, you will have to dedicate a significantly greater amount of time to it. I'm not interested in being as buff as Cool J, and really don't have as much time to "complete" the workout. However, as stated earlier, I can continue with the silver and gold as long as I'd like and still be happy. As far as the charts go... it would be nice to be able to copy or tear out the food charts or workout charts. The way they are written and organized are fairly confusing and make it more difficult to do that. Finally, LL admitted that his best fitness came on the road with a personal trainer (i.e. not in a gym). However, he recommends that a person gets a membership to a gym. There is a lot to be said about the need for motivation from your surroundings. However, a gym membership is not practical for everyone. It would've been nice to have more information about getting pumped up at home, whether it's with a set of barbells and dumbbells in the basement or some other means.

Overall, this book is worth 3.5 stars, but Amazon won't let you give partial stars, and rounding down won't do this book justice... so it gets four stars instead. I'd definitely recommend that this book be on everyone's bookshelf who is interested in fitness - professionals, athletes, and people who are interested in getting fit for the first time. I'm still a bigger fan of the Abs Diet series (as a matter of fact, one of the writers of Platinum Workout is a writer for Men's Health, which is produced by the author of Abs Diet), but this book still contains a lot of great workout routines, recipes, and exercises that I can't wait to try.

I really enjoyed using this book. The cardio workouts are intense and the supersets get your body going... most of the workouts have you out in of the gym in less than an hour and have built in sufficient rest through out the week. This is not the perfect workout for someone who is skinny and looking to bulk up like LL. This is perfect for someone who is looking to lose some inches off thier waist and looking to build some lean muscle.

All in all, I thought this was a good purchase. The only thing I could have done without is all of the self promotion. My workout didnt really benifit from reading a timeline about all of his career accomplishments.

I'll keep it short and sweet. If you want to get in the best shape of your life, buy this book! I've been on it for 16 weeks now, and I started seeing results after the first few weeks. I went from 220 lbs. down to 190lbs. (I'm 6'3). Dropped down from a 38 waist to a 34, and am more defined than I have ever been. This book starts off slow enough so that beginners can get with it, and really picks up as weeks progress. Do yourself a favor, buy it ASAP!

My massage therapist suggested this book because I was having pretty severe shoulder pain. After starting the e-cises recommended in the book, the pain was almost completely gone within 48 hours. I had been suffering for a month! Because this book makes so much sense, I do the daily exercises now. Pete Egoscue explains things in such a way that each chapter has an "ah-ha" moment. I don't want to get myself in that position again so 15 minutes a day is nothing compared to the benefits to my body.

5 out of 5 stars Chronic pain? Read this book!.......2007-06-23

This book gave me my life back. At 49, my mobility was severely limited by pain in my feet, knees, and hips. I could move only with crutches. Orthopedists looked at my x-rays and recommended joint replacements. I had had a disastrous experience with foot surgery earlier and was not optimistic.

I found this book by chance; my first copy was a used copy that I saw in a shop in Santa Cruz, CA. "Pain Free" -- well, I could use some of that, I thought, and bought the book for a buck. I've since bought more copies new to give to friends who had back or knee trouble.

From the first day I started the exercises, I felt better. Most of them are pretty stupid-feeling little exercises, simple to do and you wonder, "how could this help?" but it helps. Turned out a great deal of my misery was fixable. Three years later, the xrays still look pretty awful, but I'm mobile and surgery is an option I may explore someday, but I don't need it anytime soon.

The best thing about the book is, you don't have to read it all to start benefitting. The theory is interesting, and you'll eventually want to read it, but the suffering reader can just go to the chapter marked "knees" or "back" and get to it before reading the theory.

This book was a miracle for me. I hope it helps you.

This book has literally changed my life. In the space of 6 months, I had a baby, broke my hip and had my back go completely out (SI joint dysfunction). I spent 6 weeks in physical therapy and 2 weeks at the Chiropractor's office. Literally 3 days after starting the exercises in this book I was able to stop using my cane. 5 days later I was nearly pain free. I have been doing these exercises for 6 weeks and feel better than I have in years. My pain is completely gone and I have better range of motion, coordination and balance than I had at age 20. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

With pain and problems left over! I disagree with the author only in that he believes our wonderful bodies evolved over millions of years. He knows much about the body and has great understanding and insight into how to allow the body to TRULY FIX many problems (more than just skelatal!) I'm saddened that this knowledge has not yet led him to the Creator of our amazing bodies. [Psa 139:14] I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Bill Phillips had been publishing bodybuilding magazines and marketing nutritional supplements for years when he had a weird revelation at a trade show: many of the most loyal and enthusiastic readers he had were totally out of shape. From that uncomfortable realization came his popular Physique Transformation Contest (top prize that first year: Phillips's own Lamborghini), now world famous, and this book.

The three-times-a-week weightlifting program in Body for Life is deceptively simple. If you've spent any time in the gym, you've already done all the exercises. But Phillips includes a couple of high-intensity sets at the end of each exercise that should compound the training effect on each muscle group. Same goes for the cardiovascular exercise he recommends: just 20 minutes, three times a week. But those 20 minutes are spent jacking the intensity up and down, accomplishing more in less time.

Phillips arranges all this into a 12-week program, along with nutritional and motivational tips. Be warned that the nutritional advice gets a little spacey. For example, he puts "carbohydrates" and "vegetables" into separate categories, and recommends three daily doses of a nutritional supplement called Myoplex, which his company manufactures. (Fortunately, he gives tips on how to make each dose taste different, such as by adding drops of peppermint extract.) Whether you're a guy or gal, you need this book! I don't like to work out. Never have. I've done it and do it because I have to if I want to keep in shape. But I just can not get motivated on my own--you either love to work out or you don't. BODY FOR LIFE is one of THE BEST programs I've discovered and I've tried everything from Scarsdale Diet, the Cabbage Diet, Akins Diet to South Beach Diet. Bill Philips program single handedly helped kick start my fitness post childbirth 6 years ago. It's a 12 week program that includes smart, easy to follow eating for men and women AND it includes easy to follow VERY EFFECTIVE work out plans. The best part of the book is the motivation and inspiration it offers with story after story of successful clients. He has a website site for support and usually a contest where you can win money if you stick with the program--a lot of money [...]. Truth is, I've slacked off in the last few months and just passed by this book on my shelf. I'm picking it back up today to regain my motivation and getting my body back for summer! I already have personal proof it works so here I go again!

As a physician, I have taken people off hundreds of medicines thanks to Bill Phillips. Blood pressure medicines, cholesterol medicines, diabetes medicines, and pain medicines. I myself lost 6 sizes in six weeks and have keep it off for 3 years now. My before and after pictures are at least as impressive as the ones in his book. This is for the person that's really ready to go for it. It takes organization, but it works. It holds your hand through the process and teaches you about portions and being hungry in quite a simple way. Highly recommended. Also highly recommeded, Bill Phillips, Body for Life Journal and also his Eating For Life, receipe book.

The best part of this book is the planning pages for your exercises. It REALLY helps to keep track of what you've done and how much you have exerted yourself so you can keep trying to improve. It also helps to have a plan so you aren't wondering what you did last time or what you should do next. I have really increased my strength, stamina, and energy level over the last 8 weeks of following the program.

The reason I gave it a 4 was because if you are going to do all your workouts at home with free weights and a bench (which I do), your choices of exercises are limited. I would have liked to see more choices that don't need those fancy machines like they have at the gym.

PS. Check out Eating for Life as well. I didn't think it would ever work, but combined with this...it does!

I've trained off and on for 20 years or so and I wasn't impressed with the core training method...at first! But with practice and patience everything started to fall in place and when that happened my fitness level improved in ways I hadn't anticipated. I like to combine the Core Prep and a personal version of the Core Strength routine with my morning run for spiritual reasons, I also mix different core exercises into my bodybuilding routine. The Core program helps you experience a more thorough form of fitness; consequently, a more thorough form of contentment. However, I issue this recommendation with a caveat, the Core Program is complicated especially for beginners and I think the whole signing-the-commitment-page was abit gimmicky and self-helpish; nonetheless, the core training method is a revolutionary winner.

I have been working out off and on for 15 years and I have played sports most of my life, well into adulthood. As a metter of fact, I still practice karate to this day. Never have I had a workout program like this. Marc truly hits on every aspect of your physical and mental well being. The first week or two was a little troubling for me because I thought I was in pretty good shape. It didn't take long to realize just how much of my body I neglected with "traditional gym rat" workouts. I have not yet completed the entire 12 week prgram but I already see a difference in my strength, lean muscle mass, stretching abilities and cardio. Instead of getting weird looks at the gym now, I have people asking me what I am doing and where I learned. I have also noticed more and more people utilizing the exercises I learned from the book.

Bob Cooley's, The Genius of Flexibility: The Smart Way to Stretch and Strengthen Your Body, has been a "breakthrough" manual for myself and my patient/clients. As a doctor of chiropractic, I have integrated neuromuscular therapy techniques with chiropractic adjustments for over 30 years. The past 5 years I have added yoga to my own fitness routine and encouraged others to take it up in their's. Stretching has always been in the mix as well, yet I never could "see" how to get past or through the stretch reflex of contraction we all seem to arrive at. Bob Cooley's "aha" during his own journey to health, spoke to me immediately. As I put his technique of "The Principle of Resistance",(contracting the muscle you are lengthening while stretching it) to work, the "aha" happened in me as well! His basic 16 stretches are as far as I've been able to comfortably go during this 1st month, however I look forward to the greater flexibility I know I am moving into. Yes, he does go in a multitude of directions in his book, yet I've never encountered anyone who has experienced life altering experiences not to rebound in ever expanding directions during and following their recovery.
So, for anyone who has a basic knowledge of their body and is led to the concepts of stretching, this is a must read! By the way, page 255 will help one focus on muscles and any specific areas of injury.

This book introduces stretches and strengthening exercises unlike any other I've come across. It is easy to follow, a delight to read and apply. Filled with anecdotes, pictures and a lifetime of research this is a gem for anyone in any shape/size body! It has been the key to heal my knees (from mulitiple injuries), and has helped me recover without needing surgery. The book is practical, eye opening and useful. Truly genius!

Last summer i spent a week with Bob Cooley at his workshop. There i bought his book. Best thing i have done for my Body. I am a Massage therapist and now use the stretches from his book on my clients. It is amazing what happens to people who feel well and can move as they moved in their 20's yet they are 60 years old.
The book is easy to read and easy to follow.
Every therapist needs this as their Handbook. Bob Cooley's "Genius of Flexibility is the ultimate guide to stretching. Thanks Bob my life has not been the same. People think of me as a Genius.
I highly recommend this book and will buy his next one.

I have been in the fitness industry for 20 yrs as a fitness instructor/Personal Trainer/Sports Nutrition. This system was the answer I was looking for, I teach almost evey formats you might know in a Group Fitness Class setting. Sometimes teaching several classes a day. I Needed more out of my stretching routines to keep my pace, I turn to yoga for a flexibility benefit, only to found out it was painfull to get in some of the poses it didn't feel right i was not able to fully enjoy the experiene.SO I went looking for a new answer, that is when I found Bob's book,I was ready to give something new a try after reading and reviewing the book I started to practice some of the stretches that were familiar to me from yoga, I was amazed! I could not belief what happened to my flexibility, it took one try to accomplish years of yoga practice. I now enjoy my yoga practice even more, i can get in the poses the right way, I can actually feel as my muscles are stretching and is not painfull anymore. My fitness level improved 100% Inches came off my thighs just from Stretching, My Nutrition also took a turn, i was no longer craving sugar. Bob's System has freed my body in all ways, I am able to keep with my body demands and I enjoy my job more than ever. I loved Bob's book, so much so that I went on to become a Level II Intern. If you're looking for a gripping novel, pick something else; BUT, if you have the courage to explore a new way to take control of your health, this book is a must read. I thought Bob's personal story of survival, as well as the thought processes behind the creation of a new way for your body to heal itself, was compelling. No gym memberships, no special equipment, only what you see in the mirror everyday is required for healing and this book shows you step by step how to do it all. The Genius of Flexibility is packed with information while the pictures and instructions work together incredibly well. Highly recommend!!

Prior to getting this journal, I had been useing 2 sperate journals for food and excerise. This combines both. I was doing a running exercise from a amgazine and it even has a plastic holder in the back for the work out.

On my personal Training day's I just hand it to my trailer to complete. She like it to and recomend it to her clients.

Covers just about everything and arrived in 2 days.

The only think i dislike is that it gives too much space for logging cardio and not enough space for logging weight lifting.

Obviously, you wouldnt expect to fill 15 lines worth of cardio in a day. But, the 20 lines of weight lifting, well i run over almost every single time, because it only allows 4 sets per line. With many of my workouts being 6 sets or more, i find myself logging other reps and sets in the notes area. :(

I placed both balls under my sacrum and just relaxed, while laying on the floor. My lower back pain melted away. Triple Kudos, this works.
Warning: Keep away from pets. My dog found them under a shelf and bit right through them, but at least I got to use them one time.

By placing one ball under my neck and rolling my neck around for a few minutes, I am able to turn my neck while driving without feeling the usual stiffness and pain. In fact, I can roll my head in almost any direction without neck pain for the first time in at least 20 years. To work the sides of my neck, I placed one ball on a tailor's ham (used in sewing) so that my shoulder would have room while laying on my side with the ball fully supporting the side of my neck. After 15 minutes of gentle rolling my neck on each side, I have no side neck pain for the first time in decades. I can't recommend this product enough.

I would never have guessed something so simple and easy to use would achieve the results stemming from this method. I run ~ 50 miles a week and these balls have become a standard part of my weekly regimen. I can not only feel the muscles lengthening and becoming more supple, I post much stronger performance in my training & races. You will literally feel the results after the first use. 'Miracle' is way overused in today's vernacular but these balls and method are worthy of the name.

Dr. Roizen will help you create a goal of how young you want to be, and design a plan that will help you to achieve your goal. That, in a nutshell, is what the RealAge concept is all about.

The RealAge System:
* Allows you to know how old you really are in biological, not chronological, terms.

And choosing to be physically active is one of the most important lifestyle choices. Unfortunately, many people think they don't have enough time to devote to exercise to really make a difference. "Luckily, they're wrong," says Dr. Roizen, who wrote this book for you to benefit from what the hundreds of RealAge-Partnership Medicine patients and the millions of RealAge members. And the good news is small amounts of time can make a huge difference to your health, your well-being, and your RealAge. Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? So what is the RealAge Workout, exactly? It's a program broken into four 30-day phases that build one upon the other, slowly getting you to the physical activity that will ensure the optimal level of health for you. Once you've completed the four 30-day phases, you will be at your best possible level of health facilitated by exercise. You'll feel great and have the energy to do all the things you love and the peace of mind to know you're taking great care of your health.

The Plan:
* Phase 1 (Days 1-30): Walk 30 minutes every day, either all at once or 10 minutes or more at a time.
* Phase 2 (Days 31-60): Increase your level of activity by adding 7-10 minutes of strength training of your foundation muscles every other day.
* Phase 3 (Days 61-90): Increase your level of activity by adding 8-10 minutes of strength training of your non-foundation muscles every other day.
* Phase 4 (Days 91 Onward): Increase your level of activity with 21 minutes of stamina or aerobic exercises, 3 times a week.

Simple right? It is. By simply walking, you start doing both. If you walk 30 minutes a day for 30 days, you rebuild enough of the energy factories in your muscles to progress to safely building strength proteins. And you have to rebuild enough strength proteins so your first attempt at resistance exercise will not rip a joint or muscle apart. Therefore, Phase 1 is a necessary step. Resistance exercises, which you do in Phases 2 and 3, build and strengthen muscles and bones, and keep them in top form. It's vital that you build up your foundation muscles first in Phase 2 so that you are strong and steady at your core, and less prone to injury before you start resistance exercises on your non-foundation muscles. Once you've built up your strength and endurance in the first 90 days of the plan, then you begin stamina-building activities (Phase 4).

Beg, buy, or borrow this book & get started on the 4 phases over 120 days to take control of your destiny of aging: walking, strengthening foundation & non foundation muscles,then stamina. Dr. Roizen's books have been best sellers & this latest release should join the list. He explains it in a way that makes it very simple for everyone to incorporate the steps into their daily lives. It is based on walking, as he says, not everyone rows, swims, or bikes their way to work or up steps, etc., but everyone walks. Lots of charts, pictures, questions & answers pertaining to aging, etc. Even if you don't exercise, or like to exercise, read this book, begin the program, and see if you don't see results over time. Time can be rolled back, & you will have more energy. And who doesn't wish that?

When Bob Anderson first published Stretching in 1980, the fitness movement was new to most Americans. The term aerobics had just been coined in 1968, and few people outside bodybuilding circles had heard of Arnold Schwarzenegger yet.

Now, fitness is such old hat that it's even had a backlash or two. Lots of the original ideas have been called into question, including the preeminence of aerobic exercise. But flexibility is bigger than ever; Pilates and yoga are two of the fastest-growing fitness programs in the U.S. in the early 2000s. The type of stretching Anderson recommends--called "static," meaning you sit in one place and hold the stretch for a specified amount of time--isn't exactly trendy, but it remains the most accessible way for entry-level exercisers to improve their flexibility. (Or, perhaps more important, to keep from losing whatever flexibility they have as they get older.)

Those who already have the version of the book that's been put out by Shelter Publications since 1980 won't find a whole lot that's new in this 20th-anniversary version. Some of the simple drawings by Anderson's wife, Jean, have been updated to show athletes in sport-specific outfits doing stretching routines, and there are more routines than before. The new edition includes routines for children, stretches to do in front of the TV, and some exercises to do before and after gardening. Plus, the old staples remain--stretching routines for all muscle groups, and pre- and postplay sequences for common sports (football, baseball, basketball) and a few uncommon ones (equestrian, motocross, rodeo). He's also created routines for sports that barely existed in 1980, such as snowboarding, triathloning, and inline skating.

The constant in Stretching is ease of use. Anderson doesn't need a lot of complex explanations because the drawings are so easy to follow. He makes it clear that stretching should make you feel better, not worse, and that it's not a competition. Any little bit you can do is better than not doing anything. That's a timeless message, which is why his book has been such an valuable reference for the past 20 years. --Lou Schuler

I liked this book on stretching for several reasons. The first is its simplicity. The pictures and instructions are very straightforward, making it quite easy to do basic stretches. Stretches are given for just about every muscle and limb you'd ever want to stretch and the author has even included some suggested stretching routines for various sports. Whether you're a competetive athlete, business person or housewife, I feel that this is book will have something to offer everyone making it a very handy and "flexible" book. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for anyone looking for more specific rotator cuff and shoulder stretches.

Every time I have a sore muscle or want to stretch a specific area of my body, I look it up in this book and I find what I need nearly every time.

I don't have the revised edition, but I am sure it's mostly the same stuff. I'll probably end up getting it sooner or later. It's a wonderful book for anyone. I highly recommend it.

This book was a great help in getting into the shape I wanted to be in. It has three key elements: planning, diet, and exercise. For each day of the 12 week journal, there is a new before and after picture, along with that pictured person's motivational story. I loved that part. I picked the picture of one person to be my role model, and it literally gave me a picture of where I wanted to be at the end of the program. I did this plan with my boyfriend. That was important, because it would have been hard to stay motivated doing this alone. I have since bought more success journals as gifts to friends who keep talking about getting fit but never do it. Even if a person doesn't use the journal specifically as it was intended, it sure gives a framework for setting goals and getting there.
