Book Description

This text remains the only text in the market that presents a balance of financial theory and applications. The authors maintain the same four goals as with the first edition: helping learners to make good financial decisions, providing a solid text for the introductory MBA course, motivating learners by demonstrating finance is relevant and interesting, and presenting the material clearly.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not a good book to learn from.......2007-06-01

This book's explanations were poor at best. It utilized undefined terms, and had a weak glossary/index.
Explanations of financial formulas were sorely lacking, and the organization of these formulas so that one could ever find them wasn't even attempted.

Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Marcel Douven Netherlands.......2007-04-15

We used this "Brigham" for the course financial management, MBA programm.
The book gives a good overview and analysis of the main issues and is rather easy to understand and pleasant to read. You sould be aware that some issues are seen through the American glasses. Very usefull, I warmly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Dissenting Opinion.......2007-02-27

Like many of the other reviewers, this text was required for my MBA program. As intro books go, I think that this book is much more advanced then what many reviewers have indicated.

Plus, my terms are 8 weeks long and this textbook is way, way too long for such a short time period. My school should adopt a textbook that is shorter in length. The book has over 25 long chapters. We barely studied half that before the term came to an end.

I felt that the layout of the text was not great. By this I mean, it would have been very helpful if, like other textbooks, the publishers/authors defined terms and concepts in the margins. Often times, the authors failed to provide clear definitions in the narrative forcing you to go to the glossary.

Next point, the authors present the material in long dense paragraphs which can be a challenge to get through. They need to break things up a bit more and interject more solved problems and examples.

I found this text more "academic" in nature and not something I could use as a reference on the job. I am looking for the practical and not the theory.

Bottomline, I would rather use a textbook that gets to the point faster, has more worked out problems, and is more visually inviting so to speak. For example, I have an old edition of Gitman's "Financial Management" and I like it much better then this textbook. The study guide that goes with Gitman's book is really good as well.

Meanwhile, I am debating whether to keep this text as reference or not.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for learning the "bigger" picture of Finance.......2007-02-24

I wanted to learn more about the financial markets and the different products available. I have tried various books on finance before and other related "Get Investment Advice" kind of books. Finally I thought of taking a class on Finance and bought this book. This book explains in good detail on the various concepts on finance but would not recommend for the average person looking to get investment advice. This book talk about the financial market, the various instruments available, how to raise capital, various options available for raising capital, evaluating the financial reports of the companies, under and over-evaluated companies and lot of other good concepts.
This book assumes that you have a strong background of accounting and should be bought by someone trying to understand the overall financial concepts. Could be an under-grad or grad level course study material.
Even without accounting background and without any financial acumen I could easily grasp the concepts but this is not a practical guide on how to invest in the stocks and bonds. Better for a student of finance.

4 out of 5 stars finacial management.......2007-02-07

A very easy to read book. Very good information. I like how it shows how to work the problem in different ways. I could not use the CD that came with it. Perhaps my PC is not compartable with the software. I was a little disapointed with that.

5 out of 5 stars The difference between an A and a B.......2007-01-29

Halfway through my first semester of finance I was trying to understand why so many of my classmates were no longer struggling - turns out they had ordered this study guide. Generally I am not a fan of study guides, but this one is very comprehensive and gives wonderfully detailed explanations to all of its self-test problems - not just the answers. I ended up using this more than my actual text book and I highly recommend it to every student taking Finance.

3 out of 5 stars Book is Okay.......2006-03-03

I thought that this study guide would follow the actual text book to the tee, but it does not. I was hoping it would follow the problems at the end of the chapters and explain in detail the problems.

5 out of 5 stars Best Study Guide.......2004-10-09

This study guide was extremely helpful to me. It gives you all the main points and helps you understand the text better. I wish all study guides were this good!

1 out of 5 stars Find another finance book.......2004-07-20

This book is a nightmare; thoroughly confusing. Authors do not know how to teach! Brigham & Company will take 30 pages to explain a concept that can be done in 2 pages. I used this book for my finance class for my MBA; this one is not worth the money or your time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook. Retain After Graduation as Reference.......2003-11-01

As an MBA student, I have now had the opportunity to study different finance books. This is undoubtedly the best. The CD rom resources are excellent. I will certainly retain this book for refence after graduation.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-09-27

This is no corporate finance for dummies book. So, don't expect to have "fun" with it. However, on a graduate level the book is near perfect. I especially appreciate its treatment of case studies - carrying the same case study from chapter to chapter where appropriate. There is a CDROM that contains, among other things, very useful and practical Excel templates for each chapter. The authors also provide foot notes that I encourage you to read. Many of them give the author's opinion of how the subject works in the real world verses the academic world. If you are the type that learns best by knowing the big picture first, make sure you get the Study Guide too.
My only beef with this text is in the index, which is woefully lacking -- rendering it less useful as a research source.

    1 out of 5 stars Terrible Book.......2003-09-16

This book is terrible. I am an educated person, but it seems that your undergrad must be in finance in order to get any use out of it. If you are required to use this book for your graduate finance class (and you don't have a degree in finance), please invest in the study guide. It will help you a great deal.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory finance textbook.......2003-06-26

The canonical reference in this field is the venerable Brealey Myers book, which is often considered a bit too deep as an introductory finance text. The Brigham Ehrhardt book, however, is much more approachable. The layout of the chapters is much better than Brealey Myers', and mathematical concepts like beta are explained in a user-friendly manner.

    Book Description

The Theory and Practice of Revenue Management is a book that comprehensively covers theory and practice of the entire field, including both quantity and price-based RM, as well as significant coverage of supporting topics such as forecasting and economics. The authors believe such a comprehensive approach is necessary to fully understand the subject. A central objective of the book is to unify the various forms of RM and to link them closely to each other and to the supporting fields of statistics and economics. Nevertheless, the topics and coverage do reflect choices about what is important to understand RM. Hence, the book’s purpose is to provide a comprehensive, accessible synthesis of the state of the art in Revenue Management.

    5 out of 5 stars A long-awaited, state-of-the-art summary of knowledge.......2004-08-23

The area of Revenue Management (sometimes called yield management) has been developing rapidly over the past decade. All major airlines, car rental companies and hotel chains currently employ Revenue Management systems and profitability of these systems is well documented. Books describing basic concepts of Revenue Management appeared long time ago (see Cross, "Revenue Management: Hard-core Tactics for Profit-making and Market Domination"). Yet, there was no single place to look for the theory behind Revenue Management systems. This long-awaited book represents a concise and up-to-date source of academic knowledge on the theory of Revenue Management as well as implementation aspects. It is a perfect reference for graduate students in Operations Research and for others interested in learning about state of the art in this area.

        Book Description

This innovative engineering economy text features spreadsheets, pedagogical graphs, and practical examples for immediate student and industry application. It combines the real-world orientation of Eschenbach's pioneering casebook, Cases in Engineering Economy, with the theoretical foundation of his second edition of Bussey's classic advanced text, The Economic Analysis of Industrial Projects. Eschenbach's Engineering Economy: Applying Theory to Practice, Second Edition, thoroughly covers the basics of engineering economy that are included in every course and covered in the FE exam. It also includes the tools and concepts--such as cost estimating, sensitivity analysis, probability, and multiple objectives--that are needed to successfully apply engineering economy in industry practice outside the classroom. This second edition has been thoroughly revised; it incorporates adopter and reviewer suggestions in addition to addressing the needs of hundreds of engineering instructors. New features include: BL Simplified spreadsheet presentations that focus on Excel BL A unique insight into how to use Excel functions for MACRS depreciation BL Improved coverage of replacement analysis, inflation, and sensitivity analysis BL New problems, examples, and references BL A unified discussion of general engineering economy factors now includes arithmetic and geometric gradients BL The comparison of mutually exclusive alternatives now precedes discussion of constrained project selection/capital budgeting

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very well written.......2006-01-11

Coming into the Cost Analysis class, I was not the biggest fan of engineering economy. This book, however, was very well written and very straight forward. I took this class at a graduate level, and felt it might be more appropriate at an undergraduate level. The concepts are very basic, and though it gets into more difficult problems near the end, the book does a good job of walking the reader through problems step-by-step. It also gives several good examples, though they are not as thorough in the last few chapters.

Overall, kudos to the author for making the subject comprehensible and interesting.

It gives instructors a way to introduce students to academic articles edited to eliminate the methodological content. The articles were originally edited for practitioners, so they are perfect for the MBA student. This reader is the perfect packaging option for any of our Corporate Finance texts.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Review from MBA / GE student.......2005-07-22

This book is excellent reading. Foremost, it discusses clearly all of the major issues today in corporate finance - capital structure, "what investors want", incentives and performance measurement via Accounting versus Economic Value Added models, corporate architecture, etc. The author is extremely engaging, and I must admit, this is the first "text book" I've had that I wanted to keep reading. The author is sarcastic, opinionated, but objective all in one. An excellent purchase for a course or just if you're interested in understanding the way markets and corporate finance truly function.

3 out of 5 stars A good book of ARTICLES but too academic........2004-04-27

Chew's New Corporate Finance is a quite decent book on journal articles on finance issues from a corporate standpoint. Other than your professor's own choice of favourite articles, Chew's may be the next best thing you can get. I won't give it a higher rating (4 or 5 star) because it lacks ground-breaking yet still easy-to-read articles from the less technical journals like Harvard Business Review, etc.

Most of the articles are too academic coming from more or less the same journals. Moreover, the more technical ones have difficult formulas and number-crunching statistics which are more appropriate for MBA and MSc in Finance students, or those in researchers in "high-level derivative work".

I have the second edition (1999) of this book and used it sparingly for my MBA in Finance. And I've browsed through this new edition - what I found was there were not many changes made, only a few new articles have been added. Perhaps inclusion of some non-American articles would do justice to this book. Chew still keeps the classic ones though, which are always relevant. The roundtable discussion on EVA is interesting but Chew does not include criticisms on EVA shortfalls or problems.

On the whole, this text should be a reasonable introduction to high-level Finance and also a good supplementary reading for those doing MBA in Finance. But the editor's selection between technical and easy-to-read-but-important articles still leaves much to be desired.....

5 out of 5 stars practical as well as academic.......2000-05-31

This book challenges you about what you really understand on finance. Before I read this I didn't like finance at all because it seemed too simplified. This book shows how the real world and people think. Especially, its chapter on risk is of a great help. Now I'm interested in some fields of finance such as internal corporate governance, real option, more refined and practical concepts than EVA, etc.

4 out of 5 stars A good reference for motivated MBAs and practitioners.......2000-05-15

As the title of the book clearly indicates, the text advances corporate finance beyond the theory presented in texts like Brealy and Myers. Thus, the text is geared towards a more sophisticated reading audience. In a collection of articles, academics and finance practitioners discuss the real world impact of capital budgeting, dividend/share repurchase policy, financial innovations (e.g. convertibles, commodity-linked bonds, derivatives, etc.), and bankruptcy on firms. Do not be scared off by the "academic" nature of this text. Unlike academic journals, the long-winded discussions on hypothesis testing and experimentation are abandoned (along with the high-level mathematics). The articles are very readable and any empirical evidence is presented in relatively friendly charts and graphs, which do a great job at providing the proper intuition. More importantly, the authors usually include real world anecdotal evidence to support the conclusions, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of various aspects of corporate finance.......1999-09-30

An excellent compilation of articles by top academicians in the field of corporate finance. The articles are ideal for a person who wants to get a good grasp of any area of Corporate Finance. Warning: This is definitely not for the beginners. It is ideal for practitioners who are interested in learning more.
