Book Description
You have more information at hand about your business environment than ever before. But are you using it to “out-think” your rivals? If not, you may be missing out on a potent competitive tool.
In Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning , Thomas H. Davenport and Jeanne G. Harris argue that the frontier for using data to make decisions has shifted dramatically. Certain high-performing enterprises are now building their competitive strategies around data-driven insights that in turn generate impressive business results. Their secret weapon? Analytics: sophisticated quantitative and statistical analysis and predictive modeling.
Exemplars of analytics are using new tools to identify their most profitable customers and offer them the right price, to accelerate product innovation, to optimize supply chains, and to identify the true drivers of financial performance. A wealth of examples—from organizations as diverse as Amazon, Barclay’s, Capital One, Harrah’s, Procter & Gamble, Wachovia, and the Boston Red Sox—illuminate how to leverage the power of analytics.
Customer Reviews:
Great book. And Great timing........2007-06-17
I was walking through the airport and saw a book prominently displayed in the bookstore, Competing on Analytics. I just about had whiplash with the speed with which I turned to buy the book. And once I sat down and took a look at it, I noticed it was written by you.
Why does that matter? Your book Process Innovation had a great deal to do with forging the direction of a company I helped start, IMG (Insource Management Group) which was later renamed to Healthlink and purchased by IBM two years ago. You may recall this company while you were at UT in Austin.
Great book. And Great timing. There's no place where these concepts will have more impact than Healthcare. Ivo.
Analytics for beginners.......2007-06-09
This is the glib, anecdotal book built around a basic, almost stereotypic Harvard Business Review five-level model, this one focusing on various levels of use of analytical methods, systems and processes. At the lowest level, there is almost nothing going on in terms of analytics and, at the highest level, analytics are systematic, widespread and strategic. You can figure the middle three levels. In my experience, there would be some use in providing a zero-level or even negative-level use of analytics, those firms operating in the "data free" zone. They would provide some humor and color, not just useful references.
As to the subtitle, "The new science of winning," to be clear, "competing" and "winning" are not synonymous or even necessarily linked. Competing is not necessarily about winning and winning isn't as important as remaining competitive in the long run. Winning isn't everything and it is not the only thing.
The anecdotes tend towards Harrah's, the Boston Red Sox and several less-than-mainstream firms, along with a few data-crazed firms, e.g., Google. More and more detailed examples of the first-rate use of analytics by top competitors in the corporate world would have been welcome. Personally, Harrah's use of analytics to maximize gambling revenues strikes me as exploiting people's addictions. As to the Red Sox, at least they finally won a Series. As to data, the authors seem to think that 'data' is a singular noun, which leaves me somewhat perplexed as to the analytics applied to editing the text.
The book is shorter than the listed 240 pages. The anecdotes tend to be repetitive, the analytics more descriptive than analytic, and the five-level model gets driven home right away and then driven in repeatedly. We can probably all agree that the information age provides the capacity to mine data, to analyze it thoroughly, to disseminate it approporiately and widely, to use it strategically, and to provide the essential leadership to hire the people, structure the organization, and put the entire system in place in the first place.
"Competing" was not as boring as I expected it to be and not as informative as a I wanted it to be.
A very good introduction to the topic of business analytics..........2007-05-31
There is *so* much value and information locked up in the data that a company maintains on their business. But how can a company turn that into a competitive edge? That question is explored in the book Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning by Thomas H. Davenport and Jeanne G. Harris. While not a detailed "how to" book on the subject, it makes a strong case for what needs to be done to survive and compete in today's marketplace.
Content:
Part 1 - The Nature of Analytical Competition: The Nature of Analytical Competition; What Makes an Analytical Competitor?; Analytics and Business Performance; Competing on Analytics with Internal Processes; Competing on Analytics with External Processes
Part 2 - Building an Analytical Capability: A Road Map to Enhanced Analytical Capabilities; Managing Analytical People; The Architecture of Business Intelligence; The Future of Analytical Competition
Notes; Index; About the Authors
I'll be the first to admit that a book on analytics doesn't necessarily sound like "edge-of-your-seat" reading. But surprisingly, this book is much more readable than I expected. Davenport and Harris avoid getting bogged down in academic posturing and theorizing, and the examples of real companies and scenarios are numerous. You'll find everything from financial services (like Capital One) to sports teams (such as the New England Patriots). Through these actual companies and case studies, the foundation is set for why this is critical to business success, as well as the mind-set changes that are needed to make it all happen. They also do a great job in explaining the difference between reporting and true analytics, as well as presenting a continuum of stages of analytical competition. You may be anywhere from analytically impaired (not good) to being an analytical competitor (very good). While you may not like where you are, at least you'll understand what you need to do to move up the pyramid.
Even if you're not directly responsible for analytics, it's worth understanding what it's all about. This is a good intro to the topic, and it may be what spurs you on to take the next steps from "what" to "why"...
A "Primer" on Analytics.......2007-05-30
My overall impression of the book is that it does provide a good survey of what is going on in the business world as it relates to analytics, whether they relate to the Internet or just to good business metrics. I find, however, that there is a complete lack of a bibliography of publications that might be the next step in pursuing more knowledge of this subject. I realize that there are extensive notes which do make reference to specific publications (articles, etc) but they are not organized into a usable bibliography. I suspect that I need to do a "second read" of this book to ensure that I have its intent well in hand.
Pioneer in Analytics.......2007-05-28
This book is the first ever book who pay enough attention to the strategic aspect of Analytics. As a leader in Analytics in the Financial Services firm, I found this book enlightening. The materials does not mean to cover every technical aspects of developing Analytics, it is a strongly recommneded for CMO, CFO and CIO.

If you judge books by their covers, Jack Welch's Winning certainly grabs your attention. Testimonials on the back come from none other than Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Rudy Giuliani, and Tom Brokaw, and other praise comes from Fortune, Business Week, and Financial Times. As the legendary retired CEO of General Electric, Welch has won many friends and admirers in high places. In this latest book, he strives to show why. Winning describes the management wisdom that Welch built up through four and a half decades of work at GE, as he transformed the industrial giant from a sleepy "Old Economy" company with a market capitalization of $4 billion to a dynamic new one worth nearly half a trillion dollars.
Welch's first book, Jack: Straight from the Gut, was structured more as a conventional CEO memoir, with stories of early career adventures, deals won and lost, boardroom encounters, and Welch's process and philosophy that helped propel his success as a manager. In Winning, Welch focuses on his actual management techniques. He starts with an overview of cultural values such as candor, differentiation among employees, and inclusion of all voices in decision-making. In the second section he covers issues around one's own company or organization: the importance of hiring, firing, the people management in between, and a few other juicy topics like crisis management. From there, Welch moves into a discussion of competition, and the external factors that can influence a company's success: strategy, budgeting, and mergers and acquisitions. Welch takes a more personal turn later with a focus on individual career issues--how to find the right job, get promoted, and deal with a bad boss--and then a final section on what he calls "Tying Up Loose Ends." Those interested in the human side of great leaders will find this last section especially appealing. In it, Welch answers the most interesting questions that he's received in the last several years while traveling the globe addressing audiences of executives and business-school students. Perhaps the funniest question in this section comes at the very end, posed originally by a businessman in Frankfurt, who queried Welch on whether he thought he'd go to heaven (we won't give away the ending).
While different from the steadier stream of war stories and real-life examples of Welch's first book, Winning is a very worthwhile addition to any management bookshelf. It's not often that a CEO described as the century's best retires, and then chooses to expound on such a wide range of management topics. Also, aside from the commentary on always-relevant issues like employee performance reviews and quality control, Welch suffuses this book with his pugnacious spirit. The Massachusetts native who fought his way to the top of the world's most valuable company was in many ways the embodiment of "Winning," and this spirit alone will provide readers an enjoyable read. --Peter Han
Book Description
Jack Welch knows how to win. During his forty-year career at General Electric, he led the company to year-after-year success around the globe, in multiple markets, against brutal competition. His honest, be-the-best style of management became the gold standard in business, with his relentless focus on people, teamwork, and profits.
Since Welch retired in 2001 as chairman and chief executive officer of GE, he has traveled the world, speaking to more than 250,000 people and answering their questions on dozens of wide-ranging topics.
Inspired by his audiences and their hunger for straightforward guidance, Welch has written both a philosophical and pragmatic book, which is destined to become the bible of business for generations to come. It clearly lays out the answers to the most difficult questions people face both on and off the job.
Welch's objective is to speak to people at every level of an organization, in companies large and small. His audience is everyone from line workers to MBAs, from project managers to senior executives. His goal is to help everyone who has a passion for success.
Welch begins Winning with an introductory section called "Underneath It All," which describes his business philosophy. He explores the importance of values, candor, differentiation, and voice and dignity for all.
The core of Winning is devoted to the real "stuff" of work. This main part of the book is split into three sections. The first looks inside the company, from leadership to picking winners to making change happen. The second section looks outside, at the competition, with chapters on strategy, mergers, and Six Sigma, to name just three. The next section of the book is about managing your career—from finding the right job to achieving work-life balance.
Welch's optimistic, no excuses, get-it-done mind-set is riveting. Packed with personal anecdotes and written in Jack's distinctive no b.s. voice, Winning offers deep insights, original thinking, and solutions to nuts-and-bolts problems that will change the way people think about work.

Unintended Usefulness of this for an Outsider.......2007-06-09
I am retired teacher of English literature etc. I could not possibly have been good or expert in the world of business, commerce, management, etc. But this book was a marvelous armchair tour of that whole unknown world. Actually a world whose expertise I respect--but I do not regret that I missed its rat-race. Indeed, who would want to enter fast-track Business as presented here--except to (A) amass enough money to retire from it early (and do more integral things in life?), while along the way to (B) have an outlet for one's military and sportive instincts: "how to win and cream the competition by going all-out." Even though at the end of the day, what integral results of true value?.....
Good Book...I've read better...I've read worse.......2007-05-31
This is a decent book. I had to stop and ponder on a lot of the points he made and how it could be applied in my own business to which it has helped in one degree or another. As far as any negative reviews about the book, perhaps there was a bit too much fluff and not enough substance. In regards to all the negative reviews that have been written about this book, a quick search on Amazon of virtually any book will yield both 5 and 1 star reviews. It is all relative, I don't believe there are trully any business, management, self-help-type books honestly deserving of 5 stars.
The ONE book to read about leadership.......2007-05-04
Having being highly sceptical about the hype around Jack Welch, I finally got to read his book "Winning". I have been reading scores of management literature and nearly always found one or two good chapters surrounded by half a dozen unfocused chapters
"Winning" is different; it gets all the way around the leadership compass and never looses focus. From the first to the last page I found it to cover and confirm my 25 years of leadership experience, why I highly recommend any leader and to-be leader to read it; also managers can benefit from it.
A Winning book by Welch.......2007-05-01
It would be difficult to complete an MBA program in a university without mentioning Jack Welch and his tenure at GE. Welch is truly an inspirational business leader with charisma - although the same cannot be said for his role as a parent or husband (he admits spending too much time away from home). Even though some of the ideas presented are not unique, Welch's presentation is excellent. Welch's principles are easy to understand both the `what' and the `why' (`what' has to be done and `why' it is critical to success). Without a doubt, a leader with his charisma is needed and a supporting team to complement the style.
Another great hit.......2007-03-30
Of course it's expected. Anything that Jack writes is a must read for business leaders. Great book!

A Teacher's Must.......2007-06-05
I have 2 children that are teachers. I purchased both the move and the book for their education on how to treat and handle children in the classroom. They were excited over both.
The essential 55: An Award winning Educator's Rule for Discovering the Succesful Student in Every Child.......2007-05-16
The book is really helpful. And easy reading. I enjoyed it alot.
A Beginning Teacher's Best Friend.......2007-05-03
The Essential 55 was recomended in my Intro to Teaching class in college. This book really speaks to your heart, I pass it on to other newbies as well as other accomplished teachers. It is truly an inspiration to any and every teacher that strives to make a difference in the lives of their pupils. If you ever have the chance to hear Ron Clark speak at a seminar don't pass it up. He is truly an inspiration to all.
Teaching is his life - his whole life........2007-04-17
Ron Clark is another award-winning teacher who apparently doesn't have a life away from his students. His 55 rules sometimes cross the line into "parent" territory, as when he teaches his children how they should answer the phone at home, and his "ABC's of Etiquette" is subdivided into 26 rules about table-mannners. He also apparently takes students on field trips that he sometimes pays for out of his own pocket, a questionable practice in most districts. Some of his suggestions, like assigning extra work as a punishment, are just wrong, and the incident in which he takes back a set of books from a student who won them because she didn't thank him within three seconds shows that he doesn't understand the difference between receiving a gift and winning a prize. Earth to Mr. Clark - a gift requires thanks, and a prize doesn't. You don't see an Oscar-winner thanking the person who hands him or her the Oscar.
New teachers will perhaps be inspired by this book (not their fault - they don't know any better), but veteran teachers will recognize Mr. Clark as a tireless self-promoter who likes to power-trip over his students. Save your money.
A Must Buy for all Teachers.......2007-03-10
This is better than Wong's First Day of School! It is written for elementary school, but is easily applicable to secondary school as well. It holds many wonderful ideas that are necessary to make a strong academic environment while not losing the humanity of the social aspect of school.
Some of the rules may seem a bit rudimentary, but, as a high school teacher, I see too many students that lack social graces and display anti-social behavior on a daily basis. That being said, I have incorporated many of the rules this year and can testify that they do work. Something as simple as a student saying "Yes, sir/ma'am" goes a long way. I work primarily with upper classmen and I have seen a real change since the beginning of the semester in January (review written in March). I have also encouraged many of my fellow teachers to use this in their classrooms of Freshmen and they have told me that the rules also work in their classrooms.
I would highly recommend this book for any teacher just starting out or a 20+ year veteran. This book reminds us of why we became teachers. It is written in such a way that is not condescending. It is very well organized and has a smooth delivery that draws the reader in.

Book Description
For today's poker players, Texas hold 'em is the game. Every day, tens of thousands of small stakes hold 'em games are played all over the world in homes, card rooms, and on the Internet. These games can be very profitable if you play well. But most people don't play well and end up leaving their money on the table.
Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big with Expert Play explains everything you need to be a big winner. Unlike many other books about small stakes games, it teaches the aggressive and attacking style used by all professional players. However, it does not simply tell you to play aggressively; it shows you exactly how to make expert decisions through numerous clear and detailed examples.
Small Stakes Hold 'em teaches you to think like a professional player. Topics include implied odds, pot equity, speculative hands, position, the importance of being suited, hand categories, counting outs, evaluating the flop, large pots versus small pots, protecting your hand, betting for value on the river, and playing overcards. In addition, after you learn the winning concepts, test your skills with over fifty hand quizzes that present you with common and critical hold 'em decisions. Choose your action, then compare it to the authors' play and reasoning.
This text presents cutting-edge ideas in straightforward language. It is the most thorough and accurate discussion of small stakes hold 'em available. Your opponents will read this book; make sure you do, too!

Product Description
The recent boom of Texas hold em has forever changed the way the game is played. Many more people know how to play this game well. Even the loose players who come to gamble have become far more aggressive, making them more difficult to play against. So a basic tight and patient strategy will no longer guarantee that you can make a significant amount of money in games at the higher stakes. This is especially true short-handed, which have become increasingly popular in the online poker rooms. This text is the first to tackle the complex issues presented when playing short-handed and high-stakes limit hold em. But even if you happen to only play in softer games, many of the key concepts presented will still help you against the other good players in your game. Winning in Tough Hold em Games includes an examination of pre-flop play, covering issues at a depth of sophistication which have never appeared in print before including discussions of blind stealing, re-stealing, isolating a loose player, big blind and small blind defense, and blind versus blind play. Also covered are thorough sections on playing heads up and semi-bluffing. In addition, over 50 hands, taken from high stakes online games which were played by Stoxtrader, are presented along with appropriate discussion of the strategy involved. This book is a must read for anyone hoping to make a meaningful income from playing limit hold em. It is a serious text and should be beneficial for those of you willing to make the effort to master this material.
