All the other reviewers must work for the publisher.......2007-06-06
This is by far the worst GMAT book I have ever looked at. It is way way way way way too easy. I took a sample of the questions....I'm not sure if any of them are even average difficulty. that's right. even the difficult questions are below average difficulty when compared to the actual exam.
tons of practice.......2007-05-17
This book was really good at giving a lot of practice questions. The reason behind the answers aren't very in depth though. I think this book helped a lot with my studies. I used the Princeton Review GMAT book along with this one and scored a 600
The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 11th Edition.......2007-05-14
The Book i ordered was delivered in 2-3 days, and in good quality.
GMAT necessity.......2007-05-12
This book is an absolute necessity in prepering for the GMAT. What makes it extremely usefull is that it is the official product of the people that make the GMAT, so the questions and problems you will find in this book are similar to the ones on the test.
I would also like to point out that I studied from 2 additional books which I would also recommend. First one is Princeton Review (it is excellent in explaining the techniques that ought to be used for test taking and you get 4 test that you can do on your computer) and the second one is Barron's GMAT prep (it has a lot of timed tests which are great for practicing since they emulate the test taking environment and conditions).
Best book for GMAT review.......2007-05-11
I purchased this book, the Princeton Review one, and the Barron's one, and I found this one to be the most helpful for studying the GMAT. This is the only "official" GMAT book, so it is the only one that contains real questions from the GMAT. It also provides review sections that tell you exactly what material you will find on the test. Since this is the official book, you can be assured that the material is accurate and provides the best representation of the types of questions that will be on the actual test.
There is a diagnostic test that is helpful in gauging your current level of ability. And there are tons of practice questions - enough where you porbably won't have enough time to go through them all unless you start studying several months in advance.
It is also essential to get the free GMAT CD-ROM that you can request when you sign up for the test. I think you can also get it as a free download even if you haven't signed up for the test yet, but the CD is available for free if you have signed up. The software provides full-length practice tests that are a necessary means of preparing for the real thing.
Definitely get this book first, make sure you download the free software, and then I would also recommend that you purchase another book such as the Princeton Review one in order to get a different perspective on how to approach the test. A different book would be helpful to gain some additional strategies that the offical GMAT book doesn't offer.
This combination of two books and the software and a reasonable amount of study time allowed me to increase my score by 70 points, and my starting score was already well above-average. I think it would be very possible to raise your score by 100 points or more by studying with some good books like this one and studying diligently.
Good luck!

Customer Reviews:
pretty well written.......2007-06-11
I think this book helped me alot for preping the exam. another service I used that was helping me alot for the verbal/vocabulary part of the exam is (...).
This book is all you need, seriously........2007-06-02
I just took the GRE today. I got a 660 verbal/660 quantitative. I was thrilled with that score; I was hoping to get a 1200, but got a 1320 instead. I studied with this book and 2 older (circa 2000) books. The older books were freebies, and after I worked through most of them I ordered this book and the PassKey(just to be thorough-I'm that way). I would have been better off just using this book exclusively. This was VERY helpful to me.
I am coming into grad school after being out of school for 18 years so I had a LOT of reviewing to do.
I started studying INTENSELY (full-time, 6-9 hrs a day-can't study too much math or I get a headache) for about 2.5-3 weeks before the exam. That was a bit extreme, but if I can do it in that amount of time, anyone can. I felt like I had the just the right amount of preparation for the GRE.
Although a few of the reviews here stated that the math section was easier on the actual test than the problems/practice exams in this book, I didn't find that to be the case. This book is packed with excellent math review concepts, test-taking tactics, practice problems AND additionally 5 full practice exams. Also, contrary to another review that I saw here, I didn't find any mistakes/typos in this book.
I would say skip the flashcards and make your own. Just go off the 350 GRE frequently examined words list in this book or you can probably find it elsewhere. That sounds like a lot, but it's really not. Half of those words you probably already know. The clincher is that you have to know the subtle nuances of the meaning of the word. Don't just study the general meaning of the word, because that isn't good enough. That will become evident after you start working though some of the antonyms/analogy practice problems.
If you're like me, you're sweating the essays. Don't. Just spend about 2 days writing a few practice essays and you'll be good to go. For the writing section, this book's recommendations are quite good. That is: the vast majority of the the issue essay topics will cover some permutation of 8-12 broad themes. Examples are: What are the advantages/disadvantages of loyalty; teamwork; higher education; competition vs. cooperation; specialists vs. generalists; idealism vs. pragmatism, etc. Brainstorm about these topics; do free association; don't censor yourself. Separate the wheat from the chaff and you'll have 3 body paragraphs of your essay. Slap on an introduction and a conclusion. Don't write the intro first, because it will change after you've completed the body of your essay. Trust me on this. Next, although it is painful, flesh out 2 or 3 real essays and you're done.
Btw, the free PowerPrep software is definitely worth using (although the 640x480 mode is just stupid). Download it and work through the practice tests (there are 6 math and 3 verbal practice tests). However, beware of an inflated score when you take the final demo exam. The practice tests are harder than the demo exam, so keep that in mind when you receive your final "score". I would estimate that this program falsely elevated my score by about 100 points.
When you're taking the actual exam, you can't really gauge how you're doing. I was certain that I completely aced the verbal section and bombed the math section. I was sure to be painstakingly thorough on the first 1/3 of the math, totally blew my time (had 15 minutes left for 13 problems) and ended up edu-guessing on the last FIVE. But, amazingly, it worked out.
Lastly, don't get the PassKey book AND this book, because the PassKey book is a subset of this book. If you have > 1.5 weeks to study for the test, get this book. If you have
< 1.5 weeks, go with the abbreviated version (the PassKey).
Great GRE Book!, .......2007-05-28
This is a great book for practicing questions, it offers a little bit of all types of questions. This book is especially good for starters, but the major drawback is that it doesn't offer too much of mathematical review or strategies. Luckily, i bought the "EZ GRE - Math Strategies" book along with this book. It helped me a lot by applying the math strategies given in the EZ GRE book to the question in this book.

I used this book and only this book. My score
Quantitative 800/800
Verbal 740/800
Writing 5.5/6.0
Really good overview of the GRE.......2007-04-09
I don't have anything to compare this to, but since I never took the SATs I really had no background to taking the GRE. This book was easy to work with and I feel like it is preparing me pretty well. Easy to understand and lots of words for the verbal part which is my weakest part. The tips it gives you are easy to remember and have helped me a lot to answer some of the more difficult questions. The CD Rom gives a more relistic testing situation, so I would recommend a book and CD combo.
Overall this book was really useful, and I would recommend it for others.

Don't waste your money.......2007-06-13
This book is by far the worst I've ever seen in terms of editing. The book is filled with paragraph duplications and missing information. With errors like these, how can they expect you to trust their advice on how to achieve a good score?!
The sample questions are confusing, and the answer explainations left me scratching my head even more. They're vague at best, and sometimes down-right WRONG!
This book is a real confidence buster. It really freaked me out to see how poorly I did on the sample tests. I know I'm not half the idiot they made me out to be!
What a waste of time and money! I don't recommend this book to anyone. The Princeton Review book and the Official GMAT study book are by far superior to this one.
Prefer the Princeton Review.......2007-06-08
Delivery of book was on time as always with Amazon...could have made a better choice in Review book...Princeton Review is more user friendly...Official GMAT review is what it is OFFICIAL
Great study help, poor introductory editing.......2007-05-12
I have used the GMAT stand-alone helper cdrom's offered by Kaplan and they aren't awful (although quite tacky and a bit outdated), but the book and it's helpful tips were what really drove me to excel on the actual test. If you focus on their methods for study and try to adhere to how they suggest going about the study/test-taking process, I found that my score ended up being outstanding! I took the initial online tests to start with and came in the low-to-mid-500's. After about a month going through the entire book, I took the actual test and came in at 660. I was dumbstruck at the difference.
There are so many great tips on how to aproach what the test is looking for in their answers as well as how to prepare for the essay portion. I was extremely glad that I did not rely on the software alone.
I actually did not use the CD-rom included within the book, so I have no take on that. I had previously purchased the Kaplan Higher Score on the GMAT software and stuck with that.
Regarding the 4 stars versus 5, I was greatly disuaded by the poor editing in the first chapter. It was extremely annoying and something that should not have been overlooked after publishing this book yearly for so many years. Kaplan, you loose a star for a lack of a polished showing. You keep the remaining four stars for good content and tips.
One added note: if you can find the Kaplan GMAT software relatively cheaply (and it doesn't seem to matter which year), it's a worth-while addition to the book considering the cost and that it has some somewhat-helpful features.
GMAT.......2007-05-07
The GMAT review is good...especially if you follow the proposed syllabus and has an advantage that it allows you to study on your own rythm...
A disadvantage is that in some chapters, especially in the beginning, there were dome duplucated pages and paragrahs replacing the original pages and thus overwriting the original script...I had to contact Kaplan to get these missing paragraphs; so when you receive a copy make sure there are no typing/duplication mistakes...
Great book for GMAT preparation.......2007-05-06
I started preparing for GMAT with Barron's guide. Then I came to know about Kaplan from my friends and bought it in Amazon. Its an excellent material to start with GMAT preparation. The way every type of question is explained is very clear and brief, without ant lengthy annoying explanations. There are lot of tips and suggestions which you cant get in other books. I strongly suggest to start preparation with this book. However, practice questions are not sufficient in this book. You can buy "GMAT Official Review" book for practice.
Pro's :
1. Clear and precise explanations
2. You can prepare in book,CD companion and online too.(Combined package)
3. Easy to review
Con's:
1. Insufficieent practice questions
2. The online version will expire after 6 months of regsitration
Average customer rating:
- I passed using this
- Better than nothing
- Test Prep material is good. Tests are below average

I had only a few months to study and not every day and I only used this book (and the free practice test that the Gmac mails out) and I got a 500 on the test. It was harder than the SAT but the advice on the video w/ the book and the practice tests ( I recommend that one focus on the tests above all) and you can do well. I did not study as much as I could have
Better than nothing.......2007-06-08
I found the questions to be a bit rudimentary. The classes might help. but you're probably better off with Kaplan, etc. classes and mentoring.
Test Prep material is good. Tests are below average.......2007-06-05
This book is good to refresh your concepts and to browse over quickly what you probably forgot since high school, but thats about it. The tests are totally way off the actual GMAT.
Especially the Math section on the online tests is too simple, and the actual GMAT questions are a few notches higher.
All in all, not worth buying. You could probably get one from a library to use. I'd recommend Kaplan to this one.
Good but cheated out of practice tests.......2007-06-02
The book gives good advice regarding how to analyze questions. I attempted to download the practice materials and the web site told me my account existed. I tried a second email address and somehow that address existed as well.

Customer Reviews:
If you buy one review guide this should be it........2007-06-25
Prepared by the organization that writes the ACT. As a teacher who helps prep students for the college admissions tests, I know what most students are willing to do. Hours of study and review over a long period of time may be the ideal, but it is an unrealistic ask of most teenagers. Their most efficient use of time is to take practice tests and then look over the problems missed. This book has real questions direct from the source combined with good explanations of all answers. The overall review sections are short and to the point. Students may take practice tests one section at a time to avoid burnout (but must understand why they missed each question). A few hours spent preparing with this method will raise scores, probability of admission to certain schools and the amount of scholarship money a student is likely to earn.
The Best ACT Practice Book...Practice, not Instruction.......2007-05-13
The ACT is quickly becoming an equal competitor to the SAT college entrance exam. Accordingly, the test prep industry is growing up around this relative newcomer-turned-regular on the admissions scene.
This book, published by the ACT organization--the makers of the test--is a fantastic resource for any student or teacher working on test preparation. But, in all honesty it is only worth the [...](a pretty reasonable price) because of the three real practice tests included inside. The rest of the book...the introduction, the strategies, and even the question answer explanations...have been done better by other organizations. It's no slight to the ACT company, but they simply did not choose to share the best strategies to beat their own test.
Still, this book contains the only published real ACTs, and all other companies cannot match their faithfulness to the test (some companies unfortunately are very, very far off). Similarity and accuracy are essential for practicing, because the format, style, and difficulty level of practice problems can vary immensely. Since the best way to practice for the test is to work out real problems, this book is a must-have resource for any student or instructor.
Hopefully the ACT will publish some more tests soon. In the meantime, you can also try and get a hold of their free "Preparing for the ACT" guide which comes out every fall. Each one contains a full practice test, so try and get your hands on them. Good luck practicing!

Reviewing for the ACT with Students.......2007-04-11
I am a high school math teacher and I purchased multiple copies of this book to use as a review for my students in after school review sessions for the ACT. I believe that all of the students who worked with me in these sessions will perform significantly better on the ACT than they otherwise might have.

I found this to be VERY helpful.......2007-06-01
While I did not compare this with other guide books, like some reviewers have, I did use it to prepare for the GMAT. There are hundreds of sample problems and the solutions and HOW the solution was arrived at.
When I took the exam, there were no problems that were in a format I had not seen. Naturally, they were different, but the TYPES of problems had all been explained in the book.
If - for some insane reason - I were to have to take the GMAT again, I would buy this book again.
PS: I scored 90% on the quantitative (woohoo!)
Could Have Been Better.......2007-04-24
The questions in this book are definitely A LOT easier than their counterparts from the Official Guide for GMAT Review. Nevertheless, I was still surprised when I got a total of 10 wrong answers. This book by itself is not enough for GMAT study, but it is great for warming up before working on the questions in the official guide.
Awesome book.......2007-03-25
The best GMAT book to study quantitative. It gives shortcuts to do the problems, the types of problems GMAT will ask you and many exercices
This book is great, if you're scoring between 500-600.......2006-11-01
I bought this book in addition to the Official Guide and the Verbal Guide. While it does have additional math problems, they are lacking in complexity and not representative of what you will see if you're scoring much above 600. I found the problems in the Official Guide much more representative of what I faced on the GMAT. So, if you're scoring at a high level, skip this book and concentrate on the last 50 problems of each math section in the Official Guide.
Good Additional Book for Math Problems.......2006-09-01
I bought this book with the understanding that it was not a study guide. This book should be only used as an additional aid for the math section of the GMAT. This book has really great sample questions that are very similar to the questions that you will see when you take the GMAT. This booked coupled with a GMAT Review study guide, such as the books offered by the Princeton Review makes an awesome combo.

Customer Reviews:
Good but not good enough.......2007-06-20
The Good: contains great strategy for approaching the logical reasoning, and Reading comprehension sections as well as some good food for thought on writing your essay.
The Bad: The logical analysis section of the actual LSAT is much more difficult than the logical analysis section of any of the Kaplan sample problems or sample tests. I took the LSAT a week ago and ended up cancelling my score because I was unable to answer a third of the questions in that section in the time alloted even though I did well on the practice tests in this book. Do not take the advice given here about scanning all the problems in the section before starting. This is a complete waste of precious time. Practice as much as possible and when you're taking the test, start working immediately!
Overall, great prep for most of the LSAT, I'm going to seek out another book or two to help me with the logical analysis section, as well as ordering the next 10 LSATs from lsac for practice.
Great Prep Tool.......2007-05-14
I love this prep book. It gives great strategy tips and has great practice tests. I'm taking the LSAT in June so I won't know how well this has prepped me until July but I think it is worth the buy. the CD is great and you have access to online content only from Kaplan. they even have a free practice test that you sign up for online where you go to their local kaplan center and sit for a practice exam that is scored. That is awesome.
Kaplan LSAT Study Book.......2007-01-05
The Kaplan LSAT study guide is comprehensive. It is a great tool from the start of your LSAT journey even up to giving tips about how to apply to law school afterwards. I would recommend using it in addition to the Logic Games Bible, which breaks down the process, but the Kaplan book is a good investment. There are plenty of practice problems in the Kplan and explainations which is key.
Not Mac Friendly.......2006-09-08
While I find the contents of the book sufficient, I am peeved that no mention was made of the CD being Windows only. I specifically purchased this book over some other choices, because I thought the CD would be a valuable supplement. If you don't have access to Windows or were planning to study on a Macintosh or Unix box, then save the additional cost and do not buy this book as it is available for less without the CD.
Updated 9/29/06: Tomorrow is the big test. Between this book, Cracking the LSAT by the Princeton Review and LSAC's published tests, I'm about as prepared as I can be. I found the information in this book useful, although they give themselves too much credit by claiming some tips as "Kaplan Exclusives" when they aren't, in fact, exclusive.
I borrowed a Windows computer to use the disk and found the tests quite helpful in that they timed me and kept track of my strengths and weaknesses, which I think is very beneficial. A neat feature is that one can cross out answers that aren't correct when doing process of elimination, just like one can on paper tests.
One thing, though, is that last night while taking a test, the application crashed right after I finished and did not save my answers. Ugh!
I'm not sure which I liked better, Kaplan or Princeton Review, as they're both good and I don't think you could go wrong with either. Or, like me, you could buy both if you have enough time before the test.
Oh yeah, good luck and see ya in court!
Good Strategy book.......2006-08-12
This book does a great job of presenting sound strategies for tackling the different kinds of LSAT questions. If you're disciplined, you can probably prep on your own with this book instead of paying for the entire Kaplan course.
Moreover, Kaplan's last version of this book was heavily criticized for not using real LSAT questions. Kaplan answered those criticisms by including 3 real LSATs in this version (PrepTest 7: February 1993, PrepTest 13: December 1994, and PrepTest 8). More importantly, Kaplan provides detailed explanations of all the answers in the three tests. However be aware that two of the real LSATs in this book (PreTest 7 and 13) can also be found in LSAC's 10 Actual, Official LSATs book. (Pretest 8 is not found in any other test book bundle).
This book does have the usual typos that plague most test prep books, but the typos are infrequent and inconsequential in my opinion. Overall, this book is a very useful addition to anyone's LSAT study materials.

Customer Reviews:
I hate this book........2005-10-19
This is the worst textbook I have ever bought for any class! It is a huge waste of money and super frustrating to read. This book is horribly written. The explanations are boring, drawn out, and unclear. The early chapters draaaag on forever. The later chapters get a little better, but they state a lot of obvious or useless information. I have spent hours and weeks studying from this text and learned very little.
Quite possibly, the driest text book ever written........2005-05-14
Used for my Measurement & Evaluation class for my MSEd. program, I've already convinced the professor to find a new book for his next group of students. The book has inadequate explanations - all too open ended for my taste, dry writing, and hard to decipher language. It says so much, while saying nothing at all! As if the field of assessment and testing wasn't dry enough, along comes Linn, ready to make it even worse. There has got to be a better book! Needless to say, I relied on the i-net for supplementary information to our class lectures. I did not crack this book once beyond the intro chapter!
I never want to see this book again!.......2005-01-18
This book was used for an assessment class I took at TN Techological University. I'm sure the authors did not mean to, but the book is very dry and hard to read at times. However it gets easier the farther along you get. The sections with sample test questions were useful. Everyone in my class complained about this book. Our instructor used notes and powerpoints from other texts to supplement. I definately do not recommend this title.

Classroom Assesssment Review.......2006-08-07
Excellent book! Angelo was very clear and concise in guiding teachers through the assessment process.
CATs for the classroom.......2005-08-14
The text was used in a course through UW Stout and it is a very good resource for methods that can be used to assess learners progress towards a goal. Great tool to have on the bookshelf!
A Classic.......2004-08-03
Cross and Angelo is a classic text that all professors should have in their teaching and learning library. The techniques are concrete, simple, and powerful. This is not a theory book but truly a handbook of techniques that will not only improve your teaching but more importantly improve your students' learning.
Sourcebook Of Best Teaching Techniques.......2002-07-24
Although the title is certainly somewhat misleading, this is a good sourcebook of the best teaching techniques culled from a wide range of instructional situations. There is something here for everyone in every situation, elementary ed, high school, community college, and yes, those of us at universities too.
I can't imagine many educators who will not find something to improve their teaching effectiveness in this book. A great advantage is that each technique is presented individually so that you can literally pick and choose and then try them out without having to read extensively to understand the potential for each.
If you teach (this is my 25th year teaching college), I recommend two books once you have spent a few years at it and want to continue to improve your effectiveness....this one and Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman's "Six Easy Pieces"
Both more and less than I expected.......2001-10-18
The rating of 4 stars I'm giving this is a combination of 3 stars and 5 stars. Some of the techniques presented are worth the 5 stars; the lack of actual forms or examples as administered is the 3 stars. There are many examples of each technique, but all are given as narrative descriptions, not as copies of the assessment form or handout.
One thing potential buyers should be aware of: THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT GIVING TESTS. If you are looking for how to write tests, how to test your students, how to design exams, try James Popham or something similar. This is a book full of ways to survey your students to determine whether they are ready to learn, whether they are ready to absorb more information, whether they are understanding the material - but not tests.
Let me give you examples of the techniques I found immediately useful:
Technique #1: Background Knowledge Probe. This is to be given at the first class meeting, to see whether your students know what they're supposed to before they start your class. Here's how I administered it: I teach a course called "Quantitative Applications Software." It's mainly about using Microsoft Excel and related spreadsheets, and it's primarily for business majors to fill their core computer requirement. I prepared a survey form which had about 20 questions in all, with three columns to check off: "Know how to do this" (have studies it, remember it, can calculate it), "Have heard of this" (the concept is familiar but I don't remember how to figure it) and "Not familiar with this." The items to rate were divided into 3 categories: math knowledge (Square roots, exponents, order of operations); business concepts (compound interest, present value, mortgages, multi-state sales taxes) and Excel concepts - which is what the students would be learning, but some already know (built-in statistical functions, calculating loan payments, setting up invoicing systems, working with multiple files.) The students filled out this survey anonymously, so no one had to be embarrassed, and then after scanning the surveys, I announced that people who were unsure of the math concepts could get tutoring, people who knew all the Excel concepts might be able to test out of the course, and for everybody else, I would have an idea of how much time to spend explaining background math before introducing an Excel function.
Technique #25: Student-generated test questions. Students have to generate both questions and answers. This allows you to see what they think is the most important material they've studied so far, whether they've done only the homework or also studied handouts and their lecture notes, and whether they can organize their thinking. This one should be done only after you've already given the students at least one exam or a few quizzes, so that they know the length and difficulty of questions you expect.
On the other hand, many of the techniques are not very useful for my subject area - some are writing-intensive and don't fit in with a course that is mostly hands-on lab work; some require students to list pros and cons of something - not necessarily feasible in a course where there's a fixed minimum of material that MUST be covered, whether the students like it or not. More useful, I suspect, for classes where there are issues and current events and discussions, than for computer science basics.

very good.......2007-04-02
I like the way this book is set up. I also have a Kaplan review from the course itself, but this is an easier read.
Excellent.......2007-04-02
I received this product sooner than expected and in great condition. I would definitely use this seller again.
bought this as a gift.............2007-02-07
for an LVN i work with to help her pass her RN exam. So far she says it has been helpful but i am still waiting for her to take the exam.......
The CD doesn't run on a Mac........2007-01-30
I wish I could review the book but I can't. I have a Mac and can't run the CD. I have totally wasted my money.
Almost every nursing book I've bought in the last two years has had a CD and every one of them has worked. I just went back through the description on Amazon and can't find a reference to the fact that you have to be running windows. So if you have a Mac stay away from this book.
