I will make this review concise for you slow readers, who have yet to learn the magic powers of speed reading.
Throw away all you think you know about reading faster. Many people do not start a speed reading course because they think they will not enjoy reading faster. YOU WILL ENJOY READING FASTER. People do not begin a speed reading course because they think that they will not be able to comprehend what they read. HOW ABOUT 80-90%+ COMPREHENSION?
I have studied various methods and techniques of speed reading. I have taken the Howard Berg course, the Photo Reading course, and have read several other books about speed reading. I have also taken the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics course (which this book is heavily based off of seeing that the author is the former director) Nothing has helped me more than this book. This book gives you a step by step (1 chapter a day) time line and drills so that within 6 weeks you too can be reading 3-8 times faster (750-2000wpm+ some 5000+!) WITH GREATER COMPREHENSION AND RECALL. This book teaches you how to read everything (similar to Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics course). It teaches you how to read fiction, nonfiction, text books, newspapers, as well as correspondence, and mail. One thing that I do have to add as a sidenote: if you are more of a visual or auditory learner i recommend the Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics, and Evelyn Woods Learning Dynamics courses (very cheap on ebay) only because I know that it may be difficult for ADHD prone individuals like myself to have the executive function to sit down and do the drills everyday. It actually took me over 2 years before i finally sat down and did the drills and went through the book, but I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY I DID. My comprehension and love for reading has gone up dramatically.

PARENTS: BUY THIS BOOK SO YOU CAN READ MORE BOOKS AND GIVE A GREATER EXAMPLE TO YOUR CHILDREN, AND ALSO SO YOU CAN READ MORE BOOKS ON PARENTING AND BE BETTER PARENTS
EDUCATORS: BUY THIS BOOK SO THAT YOU CAN GIVE THIS TO YOUR STUDENTS, AND HELP YOU CHILDREN TO BECOME LIFELONG LEARNERS!
The only other books that I can recommend as much as this one are MAXIMUM ACHIEVEMENT BY BRIAN TRACY, GOALS BY BRIAN TRACY, THINK AND GROW RICH, FEELING GOOD, MAGIC OF THINKING BIG, AS A MAN THINKETH, PSYCHOLOGY OF WINNING and EAT TO LIVE GOD BLESS YOU ALL

A Great Book-A Must Read!.......2007-03-28

I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to increase their reading speed. By the sixth lesson I had gone from 250 to 700 words per minute and my comprehension was greatly improved. My only wish is that I had discovered this book years ago.

I've only read about 1/10 if this book and I've already improved my reading speed from from 198 wpm to 300 wpm. Check this out. It will give you an all new understandig of reading..

Poorly devised, written, and compiled.......2007-03-09

Unlike most people who've rated this book, I actually have the book and read through it. Remember potential buyers, ratings should be for the book, not for speed-reading methods (or your ideas on the methods) alone.

I can attest that most of the methods the author teaches in this book are outlandish, or even outright absurd. In the beginning, the book teaches you to underline every single line with your finger while you read. Next, the book goes on to telling you to "photo-read," or even to start reading backwards.

Not only that, the bulk of the book is not dedicated to teaching any novel techniques, but to tell you "success stories" and drilling methods. The stories are often repetitive and not helpful at all. The drilling methods are redundant, and are just based on telling you to try the techniques under timed conditions.

I tell you, these ideas are ridiculous, and your money would be better spent on something else. In fact, I can assure you with a little searching the bulk of these methods can be found online.

How much would it be worth to double your reading rate?.......2007-02-10

This reading method is fantastic. This book has you take a baseline measurement of your reading rate (words per minute) and retention before you start learning its methods. When I finished, my rate had slightly more than doubled with no decrease in retention. That's worth a lot to me. I now read a lot more since it's so much easier. And the doubled rate was acheived after reading just the first half of the book. The second half gets into more advanced reading methods that I have no interest in using. Doubling my reading rate more than met my expectations and goals. Several reviewers on Amazon complain about the "using your finger to pace your reading" method that is fundemental to this process. I don't mind it at all. It works! Afraid of looking silly in public? I'm afraid of looking like I'm trying to show off because my hand swishes across the pages like I'm brushing dust off (not really that fast, but definitely impressive to the average reader).

The book states that the averege college educated reader reads at ~250 WPM. My baseline rate was 175 WPM. It's now ~400 WPM. The book claims it's not difficult to acheive over 1000 WPM. I've already impressed myself with the gains I've made.

The method herein consists of using your finger/hand to sweep across a line of a paragraph, forcing your eyes to follow. The typical reader looks at each individual word and says it to himself as he reads. The Breakthrough method trains you to start looking at words like pictures; when you see a picture with thousands of details in it, your mind doesn't take the intermediate step of saying what each detail is - it knows it instantly. You can train yourself to know and understand a word without saying it to yourself as you read. And as training/drilling progresses, you can absorb small groups of words instantly, like images, and know what the combinations mean. I wish I was forced to learn this method a long time ago.
