Book Description
Make teaching easier and more effective with Quality Lesson Plans for Secondary Physical Education! This cookbook-style guide contains more than 150 ready-to-use lesson plans--enough for every day of the school year.
These classroom-tested lessons with developmentally appropriate activities enable middle school, junior high school, and high school physical educators to greatly reduce their planning time. Undergraduate students in professional practice will also benefit--reduced planning time means they can concentrate on refining their teaching skills.
You'll find four sections in Quality Lesson Plans for Secondary Physical Education: physical fitness, major sports, minor sports and activities, and single-day lessons.
The fitness unit gives you a progression of lessons designed to improve cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. It includes protocols for AAHPERD's Physical Best and the Prudential Fitnessgram youth fitness tests. These 12 lessons can be used as a several-week unit emphasizing fitness or can be used periodically throughout the year to maintain an ongoing commitment to fitness.
The major sports units include traditional activities: badminton, basketball, dance, flag football, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. For each you'll find 10 or 11 developmentally appropriate lessons that progress from beginning to more advanced skills.
The minor units include more innovative activities: bowling, floor hockey, golf, jumping rope, orienteering, pickle-ball, speedball, team handball, and ultimate frisbee. Four to seven lessons for each unit give students a solid introduction to each sport or activity.
The single-day activities include 18 lessons perfect for rainy days or as breaks between the major and minor units. Fun and challenging activities such as bocce ball, cricket, tinikling, and folk dances give students a change of pace and a brief look at alternative physical activities.
Each lesson includes information on
the purpose of the lesson,
equipment and facilities needed,
appropriate warm-ups,
skill cues for students,
teaching cues (where appropriate),
main activities, and
closure.
All the activities in Quality Lesson Plans for Secondary Physical Education are designed to maximize students' time on task and cut down on waiting. All have been tested in actual programs to ensure that they'll work well as is--no extra planning time needed! And the wide range of activities helps keep students interested and motivated throughout the school year. Even veteran teachers will find many new activities and ideas that they can put to use immediately. Use your valuable time for teaching instead of planning! Let the ready-made lessons in this indispensable reference help you make the most of your physical education classes--both you and your students will enjoy it.

Book Description
Why can't middle-grade students answer open-ended comprehension questions in writing as well as they do out loud?
No question about it: writing high-quality responses to comprehension questions based on narrative and expository text isn't an easy skill for middle-grade students to master. Teaching Written Response to Text gives you tools to move all your students toward independence and mastery.
With Teaching Written Response to Text, students gain independence in written response to both narrative and expository text wtih 25 open-ended questions organized around three increasingly independent student-support scaffolds.
Practical and easy to read, Teaching Written Response to Text:
shows you how to teach written response as a form of expository writing using essential strategies associated with proficient reading and effective questioning.
focuses on incorporating the principles of explicit instruction to ensure quality student performance.
provides scores of narrative and expository models that can be used as practice.
Promote reading engagement in both narrative and expository literature. Build analytic thinking skills and student independence for standardized assessments. Teaching Written Response to Text uses many elements of Best Practice to support and extend the reading process for all students, including those with reading difficulties.
Customer Reviews:
The Answer to Open-ended Questions is Here!.......2006-06-26
This is the perfect way for teachers to break down open-ended questions. So many states are asking students to write open-ended answers and teachers don't always know how to teach this. This book allows teachers to include open-ended questions as a part of their everyday teaching; it doesn't teach to the test. In fact, it teaches students to become more critical thinkers.
I would suggest this book as the companion to Nancy's other book entitled CONSTRUCTING MEANING. It focuses on the comprehension strategies.
Nancy's work is teacher and kid-friendly. Her books include reproducible pages that are the "right size." No need to enlarge and waste time. You could also print from the included CD.
This is too easy to pass on. Teachers of elementary and middle grade levels need this book!
