3 out of 5 stars successful manager's review.......2006-07-16

i gave this book 3 stars because of the size. although, it is very helpful in many ways, i feel that the writers of this book could have condensed a bit more. other than the size i feel some of the page space was wasted on repetition. that is basically it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference manual, not textbook.......2006-03-28

First of all, as the name indicates, this book is a handbook. Merriam Webster defines a handbook as "a concise reference book; manual"

For a manual, I have to give this book high marks - it covers a whole gamut of topics / competencies - enough to assist those who consciously want to improve their professional and leadership skills. The language is easy to understand. The only prerequisite is to be in a work-place for a few years so as to appreciate each competency.

Pros:
(1) Compendium of competencies. Most likely, nothing has been missed!
(2) A person who is keen on gaining skill in a particular competency such as "Manage Change" or "Establish Trust" can quickly gather insights into what behaviors and skills he/she must practice or develop.
(3) Easy to understand.

Cons:
(1) No pictures or maps or schematics shown.
(2) No case studies or examples presented.
(3) Not concise. For example, there are 28 chapters in the seventh edition (2004). At a high level, one should be able to identify less than ten key competencies, with each having additional sub-topics. For example, it is easier on the reader to have one chapter on "Foster open Communication" with sub sections of "Write effectively", "Listen attentively", "speak with Impact", etc. rather than have a chapter each. A person solely relying on this book will have difficulty summarizing key leadership qualities. (Imagine organizing 28 chapters in the mind!).
(4) Systematic methodology for skill development not presented.

All this makes for dry reading. But then, if you look upon this book as a reference manual and not as a textbook, you might develop some compassion for the authors!

Here is how I used this book:
(1) Start a personal development plan (consult web, books or leader).
(2) Understand the competencies required for your profession.
(3) Self-assess on the competencies, assigning a skill level of "Development," "Working," or "Advanced".
(4) Have a competent leader who knows you (e.g. your manager) assess your skills. Compare notes.
(5) Pick the top 2-3 competencies where improvement is needed.
(6) Refer to those chapters in this book which correspond to these identified competencies.
(7) Summarize these chapters in your own words as you develop insights.
(8) Periodically look up summary and use these techniques during your waking hours - home or work - until they are internalized.
(9) Repeat this exercise once in 2-3 years.

In summary, this book is a good reference manual for improving one's professional skills, but should not be used as a text book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference Tool.......2006-03-03

Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (3/06)

This book is an outstanding reference tool for supervisors, managers, and executives. As a long time manager who dealt with organizational issues, growth, personnel matters, finance, and political influences, and one who teaches undergraduate and graduate school courses in management and leadership, I have experienced most of these issues. The author has done a remarkable job in the detail and accuracy of the work. The work is clear and understandable and organized in such as way as to allow easy access to information. To find such a compendium of information in one book instead of many is an additional benefit. Content is also ratified by the collective skills sets the authors bring.

I highly recommend this book as a desk reference for anyone in a leadership or management role, and highly recommend it for anyone aspiring to the job. The comprehensive nature of the material in the book provides the foundation for new managers. In addition, the reference material leads readers to many other sources, reducing the need for Internet surfing trying to find information, or visiting the local library. As a graduate school faculty member I would also state for the record that this would be a great textbook. The book is written by practitioners who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. This book is a must read. Well done to all the authors - you have provided a book any manager, supervisor, or teacher should have.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent content, very dry style.......2006-01-20

The content of the book is excellent. The authors have created a compendium of the knowledge and behaviors needed for a manager to be successful. One would be hard-pressed to find this much of content in one volume, at the price this book is sold at.

The bad news is that all of the content is in endless streams of paragraphs or bullet points. The total absence of a change in pace (no anecdotes, case studies, sidebars, pictures) makes this a very dry read. The book could be significantly enlivened by the addition of more diagrams that visually illustrate the principles being described.

To make the best use of this material, learn to Mind Map (see Buzan's The Mind Mapping book). As you read through the material, distill the content into mind maps. Continually refer to those mind maps as you practice the behaviors suggested by the authors.

In summary, the content is first-rate, the presentation is lacking.

3 out of 5 stars Of Limited Use to Defense Industry.......2006-09-12

While this book contains a great deal of useful information on team dynamics and tools, it does not cover the Integrated Process and Product Development (IPPD) framwork which is the basis of co-located Integrated Product Teams (IPTs). Due to this omission, its applicability to the defense industry is very limited.

5 out of 5 stars Dog-earred, highlighted, and still going strong!.......2006-08-27

Like all good improvement tools, this guide for teams has evolved over the years. I began with the original, moved to Edition Two and now have Edition Three. Along with THE LEADER'S HANDBOOK, the TEAM HANDBOOK is probably the most useful and used book I own. Whether you are leading a project team, facilitating your own workgroup, or just want to be a better team member yourself, THIS is the tool you need. Every chapter is jammed pack with helpful tips, traps to avoid, notes and templates to help you be successful. Invest in this book, invest in YOURSELF!

5 out of 5 stars Book for online course.......2006-11-03

I am using this book for a online college curse and the book it's great! It provide many tools like the textbook's website to help you to understand the material and exams online. In general, I like the little cases that are update and motivate you to keep reading.
If this book by itself can help you to develop you own Small Business, it worth.

4 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2006-03-04

Good overview on what you need to consider before you start your own business.

3 out of 5 stars It's... OK........2002-08-26

The presentation of this book is excellent; It holds the reader's interest quite well. However, despite a recent "update", it shows it's age when the author regularly goes off on dot-com tangents, bringing the internet up in contexts that I believe the last few years have proven are not viable. Good grief, ppl. This isn't freaking 1997! We need a business text, not the wet dreams of a bunch of computer geeks turned businessmen! Anyways, if you are looking for a text with a lot of depth, look elsewhere. This book is to business textbooks what Quickbooks(c)(R)(TM) is to accounting software. In short, don't waste your money, unless you need it for a class. If so, be happy. If your prof teaches out of this, your tests will be very easy.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good book for small businesses.......2001-08-11

It is good and it has a lot of tips to be succesfull in your business. It is easy to read and understand and it has many web sites addreses.

Book Description

What does it take to turn ideas into action? What are the elements of a perfect pitch? How do you win the war for talent? How do you establish a brand without bucks? These are some of the issues everyone faces when starting or revitalizing any undertaking, and Guy Kawasaki, former marketing maven of Apple Computer, provides the answers.

The Art of the Start will give you the essential steps to launch great products, services, and companies—whether you are dreaming of starting the next Microsoft or a not-for-profit that's going to change the world. It also shows managers how to unleash entrepreneurial thinking at established companies, helping them foster the pluck and creativity that their businesses need to stay ahead of the pack. Kawasaki provides readers with GIST—Great Ideas for Starting Things—including his field-tested insider's techniques for bootstrapping, branding, networking, recruiting, pitching, rainmaking, and, most important in this fickle consumer climate, building buzz.

At Apple, Kawasaki helped turn ordinary customers into fanatics. As founder and CEO of Garage Technology Ventures, he has tested his iconoclastic ideas on real- world start- ups. And as an irrepressible columnist for Forbes, he has honed his best thinking about The Art of the Start.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, no BS book.......2007-06-14

This is a wonderful book written by a person with a lot of experience. As usual, Guy tells it like it is and gives concrete and specific advice. Step-by-step he explains what the problem is, what are the common wrong ways of solving it are and what are the common correct ways of addressing the situation. Guy gives examples and employs his excellent sense of humor.
The structure of the "Art of the Start" allows reader to use it as a reference manual - chapters can be revisited at a later time for a "refresher".
There is simply no BS in the book - it is all about the subject matter. I wish more authors followed Guy's example.

3 out of 5 stars From a smart guy, but it's not very sophisticated.......2007-06-08

Then again, K.I.S.S. - keep it simple stupid - is not bad advice. Just that the book is a little cheesy. But it has some good stuff - likely to address at least one question you have.

3 out of 5 stars The Art of the Start review.......2007-06-04

Not a bad book after all, however a little bit dissappointing. I thought that the book gives you some hints and direction when you are about to start a new business from zero in the idealistic and genuine American dream. The first two chapters I enjoyed a lot, however the rest were too straight forward for me related to the venture capitalist system. Maybe also becuase I am not used with this system.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend!.......2007-06-01

A solid book. One of his suggestions is to make a contest- the cover of the book is the result of a contest he held!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, funny, inspirational, informative, GREAT.......2007-05-30

Guy Kawasaki is such a funny writer, he keeps me laughing and engaged throughout the entire book. Kawasaki is extraordinarily smart, educated, and experienced. He provides real advice that you can take to the bank. It's a fantastic read for anybody wanting to start a business, regardless of whether you need funding or not. He tells you everything you need to know to prepare your pitch to venture capitalists but also encourages you to boot strap the business if at all possible. He lets you know that there are not only venture capitalists out there, but there are also vulture capitalists, so be smart with how you approach VCs. This book is a keeper, or great gift to anybody you know who is thinking of starting something up.

Imagine running into the ultimate management mentor late one night on an otherwise deserted commuter train, and walking away from the strange encounter with an encapsulated guide to success in the corporate world. That's exactly what screenwriter and business coach Patrick Lencioni has done in The Five Temptations of a CEO: A Leadership Fable, placing his tale in an easy-reading and thought- provoking kind of self-help novel.

Designed to be read in a single sitting, this book uses the unexpected meeting between troubled high-tech honcho Andrew O'Brien and a mysterious old man named Charlie to explore a series of common traps that can unwittingly ensnare any hard-driven executive. Lencioni hones in on the five "temptations" of the workplace: desires to jealously guard career status, consistently remain popular with subordinates, unfailingly make correct decisions, constantly strive for an atmosphere of total harmony, and always appear invulnerable. A discussion of the story's events and their real-world implications follows, as Lencioni shifts from screenwriter mode to business coach to help answer some of the questions he raises. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

Absorbing, compelling, and utterly memorable, The Five Temptations of a CEO is like no other business book that's come before. Author Patrick Lencioni—noted screenplay writer and sought-after executive coach -- deftly tells the tale of a young CEO who, facing his first annual board review, knows he is failing, but doesn't know why.

"This book provides extraordinary insight into the pitfalls that leaders face when they lose sight of the true measure of success: results. This model is required reading for my staff."
—Eric Schmidt, chairman of the board and CEO, Novell

Any executive can learn how to:

Refreshingly original and utterly compelling, the story of this executive (written to be read in one sitting) will be enjoyed, remembered, and reread for years to come. It serves a timeless and potent reminder that success as a leader can come down to practicing a few simple behaviors—behaviors that are painfully difficult for each of us to master.

"Lencioni delivers a provocative message: CEOs mainly have themselves to blame when things go wrong. If you're a CEO (or any manager for that matter), do you have the courage to face the blame? Doing so could change your future-for the better."
—Dr. Jerry Porras, coauthor, Built to Last; professor, Stanford School of Business

You won't find any dry management rhetoric in this razor-sharp novelette. Apply these riveting lessons in leadership with the self-assessment at the end of the book. It will change your career!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great lessons, terrible writing.......2007-05-30

The five lessons in this book are well worth noting, but getting there is extremely painful. The lessons in this book are thought-provoking and challenging. Looking at my career, I have falling into a few of these traps myself.

Unfortunately, it reads as if it were written by a 7th grader. Much of this book is painfully awkward dialog. Fortunately it is short so the pain doesn't last long. Just get a running start and plow through it as fast as you can!

5 out of 5 stars The Five Temptations of a CEO.......2007-01-03

One of the best books I have ever read!!!!

2 out of 5 stars A bland overview of the basics .......2006-12-28

Nothing succeeds like success in this follow up fable by Patrick. His books work best when they're relevant to your specific situation. In this case if you're in a leadership role and need a little shot in the arm to do the right thing (although I don't imagine many CEO's reading this book). Recommend passing on this rather light fare and looking over Patrik's "5 Dysfunctions of a Team".

Summary - A CEO has just completed a year with very average results. Staying late for the annual meeting he travels home on the subway and meets a homeless man who asks a few pointed questions...

The Five Temptations of a CEO:
1. The desire to protect their career.
2. The desire to be popular.
3. The need to make "correct" decisions.
4. The belief that it is better for people to get along then have conflict.
5. The desire for invulnerability.

Some additional nice quips from the book:
* Overcoming the 5 temptations: Choose results over status, choose accountability over popularity, choose clarity over certainty, choose conflict over harmony, and choose trust over invulnerability.
* Some exec's fear being wrong so much that they only make a decision when absolutely certain of the results.
* The best way to come up with the right decision quickly is to get everyone together and suck all the honest opinions out and come to consensus.
* If no one feels a little pushed out of place then we probably didn't put all of our issues on the table.

5 out of 5 stars Another Lencioni Masterpiece.......2006-11-10

Once again Mr. Lencioni takes his expertise in leadership applications and combines it with his story telling style and produces a real "hands on" book for CEO's.

1 out of 5 stars A Summary Review of all fables written by Patrick.......2006-11-01

The 2 stars is the average I give to all the fable books written by Patrick.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: 5 stars
Obviously, it is the best one. (you can see it from the sales record in Amazon). It was the first Patrick's book I read. I have finished reading the whole book in one setting and couldn't wait and jump to look for his other books. The book has a reasonable length, setting up a bit simplified, but not over-simplified, and still reasonable fable-like setting to illustrate all important team dysfunctions and team building skills. The whole book is tight and coherent and an easy but enlightening read. Highly recommended!

Death by Meeting: A Leadership Fable 4 stars
It is a good one but not as great as the five team dysfunctions. A very good explanation of all kinds of meetings and how to use each of them. I recommend you buy one, read it and keep it as a reference. One drawback is the author tried to spicy up the book so one of the main characters will occassionally scream out some rude comments if he didn't take his pills. I never work with such an unusual person and I prefer less dramatic in a management fable. (not something like in "Desperate Housewife", the neighbor besides you was a serial killer and the housewife across the street did her gardener and used her Chinese maid to bear her baby.)

I should have stopped here and never rush to read his other books..

The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: 2 stars
This is the one made me begin to feel betrayed. If the five dysfunctions have been crafted for months, this one seems to be done within weeks. The fable setting needs more polishing works. Although the four obsessions have been presented with reasonable clariy, reading this book makes you feel that the author thinks you are an idiot. Scenarios like how the VP HR plots to damage the trust seem to be more suitable for a toddler fable rather than something for teenagers, not mentioning for managers. The rough plot affects the whole four points--though four very good points. I will recommend you to skim the whole book in less than 20 minutes by standing in a bookstore.

Five temptations of CEO 1 star?
It is the one makes me begin to feel angry. Again, if the five dysfunctions have been crafted for months, this one seems to be done within hours. The major story (95% of the book) happened in a dark train, where a poor CEO was taught about these five temptations by some ghost-like old men, who turned out later to be the previous CEOs in the SAME company! Again the five temptations are all great and worthwhile points. It is the plot that made me sick. If you have a chance, skim the whole book in less than FIVE minutes.

Silos, Politics and Turf Wars NEGATIVE 1 star
The worst one. Negative 1 star is because it wasted my time. I thought the five temptation one was the worst until I read this one. Patrick spends most of the book to illustrate the silo problems rather than provide any solution. And he even spends many pages about the main character's struggle in balancing his work and his wife's pregnancy, which I believe, should belong to another fable about personal life balance, given how many pages the author devoted to this. From other fables, more or less, you can at least learn something. But not from this one. Forget it!

Book Description

Restaurants are one of the most frequently started small businesses, yet have one of the highest failure rates. Survivors need a powerful strategic advantage: a sound business plan and feasibility study prior to opening. A new study from The Ohio State University has found the restaurant industry failure rate between 1996 and 1999 to be between 57-61 percent over three years. Don't be a statistic on the wrong side, plan now for success with this new book & CDRom package.

A business plan precisely defines your business, identifies your goals, and serves as your firm's resume. The basic components include a current and pro forma balance sheet, an income statement, and a cash flow analysis. It helps you allocate resources properly, handle unforeseen complications, and make good business decisions. Because it provides specific and organized information about your company and how you will repay borrowed money, a good business plan is a crucial part of any loan application. Additionally, it informs personnel, suppliers, and others about your operations and goals. Despite the critical importance of a business plan, many entrepreneurs drag their feet when it comes to preparing a written document. They argue that their marketplace changes too fast for a business plan to be useful or that they just don't have enough time. But just as a builder won't begin construction without a blueprint, eager business owners shouldn't rush into new ventures without a business plan.

The Cd Rom will cover the following subjects: Elements of a Business Plan, Cover sheet ,Statement of purpose, The Business, Description of The Restaurant, Marketing, Competition, Operating procedures, Personnel, Business insurance, Financial Data, Loan applications, Capital equipment and supply list, Balance sheet, Breakeven analysis, Pro-forma income projections (profit & loss statements), Three-year summary, Detail by month, first year, Detail by quarters, second and third years, Assumptions upon which projections were based, Pro-forma cash flow, Supporting Documents, For franchised businesses, a copy of franchise contract and all, supporting documents provided by the franchisor, Copy of proposed lease or purchase agreement for building space, Copy of licenses and other legal documents, Copy of resumes of all principals, Copies of letters of intent from suppliers, etc.

A new study from The Ohio State University has found the restaurant industry failure rate between 1996 and 1999 to be between 57-61 percent over three years. Don't be a statistic on the wrong side, plan now for success with this new book and CD-Rom package.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect tool for reassurance.......2007-05-13

Especially for people who have been in the business for awhile, but never did their own thing- the sample business plan/program outlines major items you may not have thought about.
Also has helpful contacts, web addresses, and other resources pertinent in educating someone on opening a restaurant.

5 out of 5 stars Opening a Restaurant or Other Food Business Starter Kit: How to Prepare a Restaurant Business Plan & Feasibility Study by Sharon.......2006-12-29

Sharon Fullen provides thought-provoking as well as practical steps to prepare for entrepreneurship by making the Readers aware that opening a restaurant is more than an idea but requires planning.

Not only are you moved to do more than come up with a wish list but one must take the time to write their vision, study the market, and come to terms if their business idea will be a profit maker or a profit shaker.

Such helpful information can propel the business in positive directions and bring about a boost in the economy by following the guidelines and suggestions within this book.

The added benefit of having a CD to provide hands-on experience of completing a business plan is another way the author shows her expertise in bringing the tools in the book to actual life for the Readers. The old saying that " experience is the best teacher" or "practice makes perfect" seems to have been a consideration of the author. This in my opinion sets this author apart from others.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for starting restaurant business.......2006-12-23

Before reading this book I have never thought that opening a small restaurant might be so involved process. But I guess it is better to learn it before you invest your money. I am glad I read this book it opened my eyes and allowed to look behind my dream of being a restaurant owner. I would not say this book discouraged me - not at all. I will be able to make more educated decisions instead of emotional ones.

Recommend it to everyone who thinks of opening a restaurant business.

4 out of 5 stars Guide for Starting a Restaurant.......2006-12-20

The section on software is expertly done in providing the layperson with a grasp of the software available and will save a fortune in missteps if read and followed. The choice in software can undoubtedly determine the quality and speed that you develop your plan.
Sharon Fullen does an exceptional job in guiding the layperson through the process of the feasibility analysis to include concept, location, execution and financing thus rounding out the completed business plan. The idea of a marketing plan is discussed showing the importance of a well-planned and executed marketing effort versus just tossing a few bucks to the wind and hoping for the best. The author has provided an invaluable tool for the upcoming restaurateur as he/she plans, develops and opens their life dream.

5 out of 5 stars Holding Success in Your Hand!.......2006-05-24

While this resource guide by Sharon Fullen may not deal with the most glamorous aspect of opening a new restaurant or other food business, it certainly discusses the most import: the business plan. The entire book and accompanying CD-ROM handles basic business preparation with aplomb. Starting with What is a Business Plan? and ending with an entire chapter devoted to an example of a sample business plan, Fullen leaves no stone unturned. She highlights business plan writing strategies, pinpoints problem areas that are often stumbling blocks to success, intersperses invaluable information on writing a feasibility analysis and deftly assists the reader with ideas on how to implement and understand successful marketing strategies. One section that should not be skipped discusses Getting Your Plan Published, offering tips on standing above the competition when presenting your business plan. The CD-ROM is an extra bonus that affords you the luxury of having printable examples and a portable way to use and share your new-found information. Opening a Restaurant or Other Food Preparation Starter Kit is a must-have resource for any aspiring restaurant owner; a resourceful guide that offers sound advice, concrete examples and hidden nuggets of valuable information that only serve to solidify a sound start to the opening of your new restaurant.

After you have read The E-Myth Revisited, you will truly be able to grow your business in a predictable and productive way.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, but no magic bullet.......2007-06-11

Entrepreneurs and people thinking about becoming entrepreneurs ought to read this book to gain perspective, not to find a magic bullet solution. Gerber thinks all small businesses should operate with a franchise mentality; that is, basing the business on repeatable, profitable systems rather than on the personality of the owner.

This is fine as far as it goes, but when Gerber puts all these elements of process (strategy, management, hr, marketing, sales, etc.) into a series of one-size-fits-all formulas, I think he is overreaching. Depending on a company's product/service, personnel, market, and a slew of other factors, these formulas may need quite an overhaul to fit the company's needs. That said, the book is loaded with words of wisdom. A few examples--

"Adolescence begins at the point in the life of your business when you decide to get some help."

"To The Entrepreneur, the business is the product."

"It is literally impossible to produce a consistent result in a business that depends on extraordinary people. No business can do it for long. And no extraordinary business tries to!"

"Most companies organize around personalities rather than functions."

Some readers may discover a great deal about themselves as they read. Gerber says entrepreneurs have three mentalities--the entrepreneur, the manager, and the technician. These mentalities are always in conflict, and the way in which the owner balances them determines the success or failure of the business. If E-Myth helps owners figure out how to achieve a better balance, that insight will go further towards building the business than all Gerber's systems put together.

5 out of 5 stars How to overcome doing everything.......2007-06-09

I am starting my own business and this book has been an enlightenment for every step of the way. It taught me how to stop being another employee of my own business and become the administrator it needs. It is a must read for anyone that feels that they're own business is getting out of hand and they need more hours in the day to do everything that needs to be done out there.

5 out of 5 stars If you're a small business owner, this is your manual.......2007-06-05

I can't say enough about this book. I've recommended it dozens of friends and have bought 5+ copies for my clients in the past month alone. Moreover, it's changed the way I approach my consulting practice.

5 out of 5 stars The McDonalds of the Future.......2007-05-31

So you have a great business idea....so what! According to Michael Gerber, ideas are a dime a dozen. Unless you execute that idea in an effective way, its destined for headache, heartache, and bankruptcy. The McDonalds model is the focus of the book in inviting you, the reader, to not just say, "Hey, I can make great burgers, why don't I sell them for a profit." Rather say, "Hey, I can make great burgers, at a great price, with a flawless system, that anyone anywhere in the world can do and it will come out exactly the same...give or take a pickle or two." Now you have a great company that is destined for success! Look out McDonalds of the world, here comes competition.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant classic.......2007-05-30

This is a beautifully written book, and the tape narrated by the author is even better. I recommend it for all entrepreneurs and budding entrepreneurs. Basically, it provides sound advice both from a strategic level as well as a tactical level for making your business run like a well-oiled machine. For those entrepreneurs who are overwhelmed, stressed, or overloaded, this book will change your life and the way you think about and approach your business. It provides a great foundation for starting a business, especially if your ultimate aim is to sell it one day in the future. In fact, for anybody who dreams of creating a business for the sole purpose of selling it to Google for $1.6B (a la You Tube), then this is a MUST READ.

4 out of 5 stars If you want to make money........2007-05-30

What else can I say? I originally checked the book out from the library and after reading it felt that I should have a copy for reference. I shelled out my hard earned money to buy it. I can't think of a higher compliment.

2 out of 5 stars Instant Income.......2007-05-16

I found the ideas in the book were very good yet I found the language difficult to understand and thus it was difficult to comprehend some of the concepts. Some great ideas and useful tools for small businesses, however, very much aimed at an American business community and not written in "common sense" language that anyone in any country could follow.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Place To Start.......2007-05-09

If you are considering generating more income from your existing business online OR you are thinking about creating a new online business - then this is a great book to grab a load of ideas on how to start. You will learn about income streams that you didn't even think of - ones that are quite easy - and then you also learn about some more advanced ideas if you are already somewhat established. What I really like about this book is that it is not one of those general fluffy books telling you things you already know about generating income. Like I don't need to hear one more thing how to save using the "latte factor". What I needed were a ton of ideas to work into my existing business - and that's what this book gave me. At the end, you will be able to sit down and design a marketing plan based on the great new ideas that you decide to use.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Good Tips.......2007-05-09

What I liked about this book is that it contains many tips to promote yourself or your business, many of which can be done right away without having to suffer through a learning curve.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommonly good sense.......2007-03-27

Big or small, if you are a business looking for an indispensable strategic planning tool for growing revenue from previously untapped methods, this is it! If you can read, there's enough meat here to keep your current account fed a long time. All you have to do is "fill in the blanks" with the details of your own situation.

No need to risk everything on spec--this book contains solid information and the free resources and support materials will help you analyse your own opportunities quite thoroughly. There's no excuse for not making it in your small business when help like this is just a few dollars away (and free if you borrow the book from the public library).

Instant Income made me proud to be a non-fiction writer because I could clearly see how presenting good information well can mean the difference between someone making it or not in a small business.

And you can take that right to the bank!

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Start.......2006-05-08

"HOW TO OPEN A FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL COFFEE, ESPRESSO & TEA SHOP" by Elizabeth Godsmark, Lora Arduser and Douglas R. Brown.

Coffee is a huge industry across the country and around the world. In the introduction of "How to open a financially successful coffee, espresso & tea shop" the authors point out that the coffee industry is a $5 billion industry, which is growing more and more every year.

Anyone who is interested in starting his or her own coffee, espresso, or tea shop is going to be fascinated in this book. The authors start at the beginning with developing a business plan. The give examples and even offer a CD program that has preformatted documents. Licenses, business name, choosing suppliers, and equipment requirements are all discussed in the opening chapters.

Many aspects of running a successful coffee, espresso & tea business are discussed throughout this book. The authors have done a tremendous job in giving an introduction to opening this type of business. They talk about profit planning and advertising, as well as choosing the best equipment and managing your operating costs.

Without a doubt this is a definite must have book for anyone even thinking about starting this kind of business. The author's are able to skillfully introduce all the major concerns with opening a coffee, espresso & tea business. They provide a wealth of information that will help clarify a person's views of what is actually required to open, operate, and run a financially successful coffee, espresso & teashop.

4 out of 5 stars Good content, but very choppy.......2006-04-27

How to Open a Financially Successful Coffee, Espresso & Tea Shop" by Elizabeth Godsmark, Lora Aduser, and Douglas R. Brown is great for beginners looking into possibly opening a coffee shop. The book touches on a lot of information that is generic to any business, but it is a good starting point. It provides basic information on writing a business plan, scouting out a location, buying equipment, hiring a staff and more.

I wish the authors would have delved further into the various aspects of writing a business plan. As it is, it simply lists what types of topics should be covered in a business plan and basic information on what the terms mean. There is nothing comprehensive about how to create pro-forma income projections or any of the more intricate parts of the business plan.

While parts of the book seemed to just be stating common sense knowledge, the authors did provide a number of helpful websites and resources. They talk in-depth on ordering coffee, but I wish the book would have included more coffee/espresso specific information - such as numerous drink recipes, maybe tips from those that have started their own coffee shop. Things like that would have been useful.

The book's flow is also a little disappointing. Many times the writing seemed redundant because the topic had already been touched on. For some reason the authors will discuss a subject, such as using a website to enhance your business and then touch on the subject again a few chapters later without adding anything significant to the mix..

All in all, I think the book does provide a good deal of useful information to anyone looking to open a business in the food industry. I just wish it had more meat to it or that the authors would have gone more in-depth on a few key issues.

5 out of 5 stars Really helpful.......2006-04-19

Organized in a simple to comprehend and use manner, this book is likely to be beneficial to anyone who is thinking about opening a coffee or tea shop. It starts by helping to clarify the all important business plan. Chapters follow a logical sequence which helps someone who is new to the business to fully understand everything that is involved.

This book helps the reader prioritize all of the different steps that are needed in order to begin a thriving business. It covers the basics of buying the product, equipments, and how to figure out pricing of the items. CD-ROM is choked full of many different forms which are needed in order to run the business smoothly.

The book also completely covers the basics which are needed in any business, including employees, customers, marketing strategies, bookkeeping, and laws and regulations. Easy to read and simple to follow, this book will help anyone who wants to start a coffee or teas shop.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money........2007-03-20

Ok I read this book and this other book called Fashion For Profit. This author obivously does not sound like she has really worked in the garment industry. It would be very scary to start a business taking advice from this book. It kind of reminds me of that old sewing lady professor you have in home economics class trying to tell you like you are a 4 year old trying to run a company, scary stuff if you ask me. I got all I ever needed out of Fashion For Profit. That book is strictly business. It's twice as much ,but you get what you pay for. Apparently the author of Fashion for Profit has been voted numerous times in the top 10 most influential in the California Apparel Industry by the California Apparel News. Bottom line you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars This book is absolutely fabulous! .......2007-02-13

I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about starting their own fashion design business. It answers any and all questions and best of all it provides resources that we all need (especially if we have no one to guide us). If you're a student of course you would have the resources provided to you by the school itself, but for someone who is doing this from natural talent and ideas, it's GREAT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-01-19

This is a wonderful book for anyone thinking about entering into the retail business on your own. It cover the basics so you know what elements to consider before you take the plunge. Other than this book, you still need to do quite of abit of research on your own.
