Those of us familiar with Professor Levine's previous books have come to expect deep insight coupled with clarity of writing and perspective. He has done it again with flying colors. This book focuses on a region of the world where dynamic economies go hand in hand with backward labor relations compared with western societies. The author assembles his vast and awesome knowledge to spotlight the problems facing these countries. Only an insider with such deep background knowledge of the region, with particular expertise on China, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, could speak so authoritatively. Prof. Levine does it with enviable excellence. This should be required reading for many, from economists and labor officials to politicians and policymakers. Bravo for presenting such a colossal study in such a lucid manner.
