Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2006-02-25
I am a fledgling (at best) banjo player. I have read and researched many books, articles, and websites pertaining to banjos. This is an excellent book. I wish I had found this one first. I may not have purchased some of the others(?).
A great book.......2006-02-01
Being a beginner myself, I have found this book very helpful in trying to understand some of the basics of banjo playing.
A great way to learn to be a banjoist & a musician.......2004-12-28
Pat's How and the Tao of Old Time banjo is one of the best basic instruction books of any kind that I have ever seen. I don't just mean banjo, but any kind of music, and I am sure people writing other instruction books can learn from this too.
Too many banjo books center on the author showing off his own virtuosity and presenting a course that really isn't helpful to a beginner. This book IS oriented at getting a beginner going playing the banjo, learning how to do everything practically. You will be playing tunes quickly, but more importantly you will be learning basics about the banjo that will take you further places.
All along, Pat has very good and basic tips about banjo playing that often are not in banjo books that can save a beginner who cannot afford a teacher much trouble.
What impresses me is that this book teaches basic concepts of music to the new player without going into things an old time banjoist doesn't need to know. Pat's concept of a player is someone who is really getting to learn more broadly about music itself than what a particular instrument can do. This is a good approach, but I have never seen it done as practically as in this book.
My only quibble is Pat's obession with doing everything in the G tuning. One is taught to play in other keys by making chords and positions from the G tuning, something that I've never heard of before in an instruction book, although I confess I have done this playing in bands when my knowledge of the banjo was scant and inaccurate.
Old time banjo is played in a multiplicty of tunings. Indeed, the adjustment of the tuning is really key to this approach to music unlike the tenor banjo, plectrum banjo, bluegrass banjo, or guitar. Even a beginner who hopes to play old time music should learn the double c tuning, the D tuning, and the sawmill tuning.
Despite this one drawback, this is a great instruction book. The thinking is clear and easy to understand. The book addresses practical problems a beginner will face in clear and easy and instructive language, there is a good selection of real old time songs here that are worth the price of the book.
This is a good book to use, but once you get picking look around for information about other tunings
Book offers great guidance for new banjo player!.......2004-08-26
I purchased The How and Tao of Old Time Banjo for my husband for his birthday in March. Within a month, with practice, and a special visit to the Costellos, he was playing dozens of songs and continues to improve steadily as a banjo player.
What helped Brian as much as the book was the companion computer CD-Rom that features Pat Costello, the author's father, giving a virtual lesson. Brian was able to stop the CD and watch over and over as he practiced his basic skills.
Also, a note about the essays included in the book: These are delightful reflections that each have a lesson for the novice player. They are thoughtfully written and enjoyable, even for non-banjo playing readers, such as myself.
Before How and Tao, Brian had gotten a banjo but had no guidance. It has been a wonderful resource for him!
The Best and Easiest Method Out There.......2004-06-29
The How and Tao of Old Time Banjo is simply the best book on frailing/clawhammer on the market. I spent tons of money and time with instruction books and private lessons and got no where fast. This book makes it all clear and had me playing in no time. I've been a professional musician for years and wanted to get that bump-ditty sound on the banjo and this did it! I've played all over the mid-west, Ireland and England and everyone asks where I learned to play. This is simply a must-have for anyone who wants to cut through incomprehensible instruction manuals and wants to get down to learning how to play...fast...and good.

American Management Association official E. Thomas Behr is both a long-time business consultant and admirer of the timeless Tao Te Ching. In The Tao of Sales: The Easy Way to Sell in Tough Times, he combines the two and demonstrates how the classic Chinese philosophy can be used to build effective contemporary business relationships. His exercises and activities aren't for everyone, but neither were Lao-Tzu's 81 simple ideas when first introduced some 14 centuries ago.

same old story.......2002-03-06
another variation on the same old theme, has this man ever spoken to a customer?
"Lets the customers speak". Easy!.......1999-09-28
Last April 99 my wife and me were walking down the "Paseo de Gracia" in Barcelona (Spain), in a very important fair of books "Sant Jordi". When we stopped in one of the small shops on the street, we watched the titles and I were attracted by one of them "The TAO of Sales". I bought it, and when I started to read I couldn't stop. During days I were speaking about the book with my colleges in the office and my close family. I started to use some techniques with our customers. "Lets the customers speak". Easy! but difficult to do it. I found on this book a new way of relationship with our custumeres. Thank you very much at Mr. Behr, for this incredible work.
How to make money in sales and keep your integrity........1999-01-13
A friend of mine called me to say I must read this book. He had been selling cosmetic products and not doing well. This book showed him how to stop pushing products/services or manipulating customers and how to start meeting people's needs with integrity and authenticity. The book aligns itself with the old wisdom of Taoism in a light, easy to understand way, but it is completely modern by a man who has trained many salespeople. I recommend it to anyone who has to sell their products or services to customers (or to their manager and others within a company)... specially if you want to sell better while enjoying your work in sales and get to know your customers as people, not "targets" or "market segments".
Tao of Sales transforms the context and behavior of sales.......1998-03-13
The Tao of Sales makes the compelling point that new sales behavior, based upon Taoist principles, creates a dramatic change in the sales person and his or her customer relationships. Taoist principles applied to sales, transform the way the sales person thinks about the sales process and the way they are behaving in the sales process.
For example, most traditional methods for handling objections actually increase customer resistance, because they are aggressive and customers become threatened. The Tao of Sales, on the other hand, describes specific techniques which enable the sales person to listen deeply and most importantly, to observe without judgment. These techniques are not found in traditional sales instruction, and yet, the behaviors are fundamental to building sustainable relationships of all types, customer, personal and professional. They remove the struggle from the interpersonal process.
The Tao of Sales successfully translates the wisdom of a philosophy of living into a series of hands-on techniques ready to apply immediately in the customer relationship! The information is chunked so that the reader is not overwhelmed and can practice a manageable number of techniques at one time. The book mirrors what the Tao says, The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Bringing it all together.......1998-01-25
As a student of Zen and Taoism for many years (in my earlier days), it was refreshing to come back and view the principles put forth on Dr. Behr's book; especially through the lens of selling. As an entrepreneur, I must express the high value his words carry for me, from both a management and selling standpoint. The truths spoken here are universal truths: which provide great clarity and enable the selling and management process to move forward; with purpose, direction and without fear. Kudos for a very fine book! I shall refer to it often as my company grows!

Book Description
David Herbert Lawrence was born in Eastwood, England, in 1885. In 1914, he married Frieda Von Richtofen, a German national and distant cousin of the German war ace, "The Red Baron" von Richthofen. While living on the Coast of Cornwall in 1917, they were harassed and accused of being spies for Germany.
By 1921, the Lawrences were living in Italy and D. H. had won international acclaim for his writings. Mabel Dodge Sterne invited the pair to her home in Taos, New Mexico. Traveling by way of Ceylon, Australia, Tahiti, and, finally, San Francisco, the Lawrences set foot in New Mexico for the first time in 1922. Although he traveled all over the world, Lawrence was never as happy anywhere as he was in Taos.
Arthur Bachrach has lived in Taos for over twenty years, and he has come to know people who freely recalled the Lawrences. They shared information about the circle of artists and friends who surrounded the Lawrences and their lifestyles. Bachrach provides information on Lawrence's writings and the influence living in the mountains of New Mexico had upon him.
D. H. Lawrence died of tuberculosis while visiting France in 1930, and five years later, his ashes were placed in a memorial on his beloved Kiowa Ranch near Taos. Given to the University of New Mexico in the 1950s by D. H.'s widow, the ranch is known today as the D. H. Lawrence Ranch.
Recollections of Lawrence's life and friends in 1920s Taos.

A good book about Taoism and Chinese ART!!.......1999-10-07
The title of this book is misleading; it is not a philosophy book but rather primarily an art book. However, it is a nice book for someone interested in how Taoist thought influenced Chinese art. There is a short, thirty page, introduction which is actually quite good and informative. It's brief account of Taoist inner alchemy (yoga) was well-done. There are many nice color pictures of Chinese art with commentary to show and explain how Taoist thought was expressed and took form in Chinese art. I would highly recommend this book for someone who is familiar with Taoist thought and wishes to explore it from another angle.

Book Description
The Tao of Sales: seeing clearly - selling wisely. Much of what we "know" about selling turns out to be based on myth: that success means learning the right things to say, to get customers to do what we want - usually against their will. That's why selling can seem so difficult. Because most people don't like feeling controlled or manipulated and thus resist - at a subconscious level - being "sold." The Tao of Sales is grounded in a fusion of ancient Chinese martial arts discipline and the latest breakthroughs in understanding and practicing Emotional Intelligence. Its insights and exercises can help you change the dynamic with your customers from control and manipulation to collaboration and mutual gain. First published in 1997, The Tao of Sales attracted enthusiastic readers until it went out of print, a few years later, with the business failure of its publisher. It has now been re-issued to bring the same clarity and success to the work and lives of new readers.

Customer Reviews:
This is a walk through time.......2002-07-28
This is a packed pamphlet. This is not only a map of time but a map of the pueblo. There are a few black and white photographs and the book is divided in to tow parts one for the tour and the other for the history.
Items covered in the walk though include:
The Mountains
The north side pueblo
Outside ovens and drying racks
The Kivas
The pueblo wall
The river or Pueblo Creek
The south side pueblo
The mission of St. Jerome
The ruined church and cemetery
As you can see this is useful even if you never visit but is indispensable for visitors.
Worth having before entering the pueblo.......1996-08-28
Although John Bodine's work makes for a fine tour of the Pueblo,
there are several instances where the author is quite insulting
to anyone with an open mind. After correcting some common myths,
particularly about language links, he harangues the reader
as though the reader would argue with his point.

Thin picture of people seeking to be significant.......2001-06-07
While I agree with Steffanie Gibbons' view that the Waters' memoir is well-written, in that it flows with the pen of an accomplished writer, but I cannot not agree with a rating of five stars. The "intimate" picture portrayed gives a thin image of his artist friends. Moreover this picture is one of, somewhat desperate, people seeking to be significant as artists, but coming off more like hangers-on. After reading the book, Taos has lost much of the well manicured luster as an artist center, and comes off more like a tourist trap.
Intimate glimpses.......2000-06-23
In this well-written memoir, Frank Waters shares intimate details of his friendships with many of the artists who lived in Taos, New Mexico during the Mabel Dodge Luhan era. A pulitzer prize-winning author, Waters uses his talent with the pen to acquaint the reader with his artist friends in Taos and tell his own life story. Waters also shares his exploration of the history of Native Americans in the Four Corners area. If anyone is qualified to write about the art world in Taos at that time, it is certainly Frank Waters. A must-read for those interested in the Southwest.
