Book Description
As followers of Lee Glickstein's popular seminars attest, effective public speaking isn't the result of being over-prepared or having a slick delivery. It's actually a creative, interactive process relying on the speaker's natural presence and willingness to be "in the moment." Now Glickstein shares his dramatically successful "transformational speaking" approach, showing that the key to successful public speaking lies in spiritual principles that emphasize self-realization and authenticity.
Be Heard Now! teaches you how to:
Heal your "inner speaker" and overcome your fear of exposure
Project a genuine, personal presence to enhance your overall performance
Develop a keen awareness of the audience and benefit from their response
Use humor and vulnerability to captivate your listeners
Apply four essential components to write a successful speech
With Glickstein's compassionate, realistic approach,
Be Heard Now! can help anyone become a confident, jitter-free public speaker whose ideas flow freely and persuasively.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
The best book on public speaking.......2004-03-20
I have been speaking professionally for 3 years. Prior to that, I spent years speaking in Toastmasters and other non-paid forums. I speak to groups as small as 10 and as large as 300. In the process, I have read numerous books on public speaking, but by far my favorite is Lee Glickstein's Be Heard Now! The tape also complements the book very well.
Once you get beyond the nuts and bolts of public speaking, you are ready for learning the art of this craft. Lee Glickstein takes you to there. Although there are still a few nuts and bolts (he gives what I think is the best formula for structuring a speech, especially how to make your opening remarks), most of the book goes to the subtleties of great speaking-building rapport with your audience. He also makes the profound observation that rapport comes more in the silence between spoken words than the words themselves. You can read the connection in the eyes of your audience. Lee Glickstein shows you how. Finally, he talks about the concept of "Speaking Circles" - similar to Toastmasters in some ways but with an even more of a supportive slant.
The concepts presented work well whether you are doing a powerpoint show or a key note speech. This book can take you from being a good speaker to a great one.
Re: "The seminars are helpful; the book is...".......2002-11-21
I'm writing this review to disagree with another reader's review which states in part, "...However, [the Speaking Circle Process] does not work if you just read the book, which consists of a lot of touchy-feely material that may be appropriate for people preparing inspirational speeches, but is worthless for those making business presentations or operating outside the realm of group therapy." This is like saying that a book on aerobic exercise does you no good unless you exercise. Hardly an insight.
When I read "touchy-feely" I'm guessing the other reviewer would prefer a book that deals less with emotion. Since public speaking often stimulates fear in the speaker, I found this book's exploration of related emotions to be extremely helpful. Business presentations where people don't fall asleep are often the result of a good mix of personal connection and information. If this wasn't so, business people would simply review written reports.
Read this book and practice the process. All you need are one or two other people to listen. You'll build self-confidence for ANY presentation. I've used the book and the process, and have since spoken to scores of groups including tough minded business groups, and large and small public audiences. It helped me connect with authenticity and ease.
Fear begone!.......2001-11-06
Shed the "shakes" of speaking in public forever with Lee Glickstein's "Be Heard Now!" A powerful look at becoming a powerful, self-actualized professional speaker. Lee share's incredible insight. A must read for all speakers! I love this book!
It certainly worked for me!.......2001-01-16
I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend, who had just finished it. She was using it as a springboard into a new aspect of her Nurse Practitioner job. For me, I needed a new way to teach weekend intensive training programs for Music Practitioners-to be. I read it in the NY airport waiting for the first flight, continued reading once I boarded and throughout the next flight to California. By the time I arrived, I had a new approach to teaching the class, by story telling and used a great many of the techniques in the book. The class went very well over the weekend and I feel it was due to Lee's suggestions. This book will be read and recommended often,as I teach many weekend intensives.
The seminars may be helpful; the book is not.......2000-12-20
You'll note the favorable reviews all came from people who have attended the group sessions described in the book. Basically, the author founded these groups, called Speaking Circles, to help people overcome their fear of public speaking. At a Speaking Circle, you are allowed to speak in front of people who are specifically forbidden to give you any negative feedback. According to Speaking Circle rules, they must say only positive things, and their comments must pertain to you personally, rather than the content of your talk. In other words, if you're the speaker, you get nothing but comments such as, "Your description of how you overcame diabetes was very moving," etc. The author contends---and it may well be true---that once you realize no one is going to say anything negative about your talk (because they're not allowed to), you will relax and be able to become a more fluent and effective speaker. He further maintains that once you achieve this comfort level within your Speaking Circle, you will automatically be able to transfer it to ANY group setting---whether it be a job interview, business presentation, State of the Union address, etc.
I strongly question this premise, but am willing to concede that it may work for people who attend the groups. However, it does not work if you just read the book, which consists of a lot of touchy-feely material that may be appropriate for people preparing inspirational speeches, but is worthless for those making business presentations or operating outside the realm of group therapy.
If you want to buy this in conjunction with a seminar you're attending, fine. If you're just looking for information in book form, save your money.

Too much waffle, not enough meat!.......2000-01-30
Did I listen to a different tape from the one that most listeners awarded five stars? I found it full of new age waffle that certainly wouldn't help me prepare a speech. I did find a few useful tips on tape 2, but it was a long time to wait!
Great help for turning fear into fuel for public speaking........1999-05-21
This tape augments Glickstein's book and provides a comprehensive roadmap for turning fear into a joyful strengh for those who want to be more effective in communicating - whether to small groups or to large audiences. He clues you in to the power of your own essence when you use it to to both receive and give as you interact with the audience. Also great tips on structuring your talk.
Lose the fear of public speaking!.......1999-05-13
Lee Glickstein offers a unique approach to public speaking. No more canned, "polished" acts in front of a group! Who likes to memorize, anyway?? BE HEARD NOW involves becoming more connected to your audience, which in turn creates an authentic, fresh message each and every time you speak to a group. Yes, there are preparations to be made before you speak but it doesn't work to copy someone else's style or words. The idea in this book is to bring out your own creative, genuine style when you speak. And, by weaving personal stories and anecdotes from your own life into a message you truly feel compelled to talk about, you can draw rapt attention from your audience. It's a wonderful, refreshing approach to speaking from the heart. I loved this audio tape. I've listened to it a dozen times. I used the techniques in a recent promotional opportunity at work and was chosen hands above the other candidates. It works!
Terrific Tape.......1999-05-12
This tape is a wonderful work that will help you connect with your audience. You might find some of the techniques far removed from the beaten path of traditional speech coaches, and that's okay. Lee Glickstein has figured out how to really build a personal bond with audiences that transcends the traditional rules of thumb. Read the book. Listen to the tape. You'll be amazed with the results.

One of Swedenborg's more challenging and controversial works.......2005-03-13
Review
The Final Judgment, one of Swedenborg's lesser known works, presents a startling claim: "The Last Judgment began last year--1757--and was completed by the end of that year." This judgment occurred in the spiritual heavens when God saw that the "church" had lost its true identity, which is compassion and charity.
Swedenborg's view of the Last Judgment stresses God's love and mercy and combats the fearful prophecies of fiery destruction and eternal damnation that have characterized this subject for so long. He asserts that biblical prophecies must be read on a symbolic level to understand their true or internal meaning. . . . This short work offers hope for the continuation of life on earth, the triumph of good, and eternal salvation. By understanding the universal application of his visionary insights, readers from other spiritual traditions can appreciate Swedenborg's writings for the truth they convey.
Emanuel Swedenborg, 1688-1772, was a remarkable visionary. A member of the Swedish Parliament, he was known throughout Europe as a scientist, inventor, and prolific writer. He is best known, however, for his extensive theological writings that fill thirty volumes, in which this work is included. Among other subjects, he wrote of the symbolic meaning of the Bible, spiritual symbols in the physical world (correspondences), a life of service and personal responsibility, and heaven and hell.
