Customer Reviews:
Great for learning the language.......2007-05-13
This book had easy lessons that didn't cover a lot of material and so could be learned one lesson at a time in short periods of time.
Great for pronounciation basics.......2007-04-10
Dictionary is helpful, pronounciation guides are helpful, phrases and practices are not commonly used phrases or very practical phrases.
a great intro to Haitian Creole.......2007-04-03
I recently took a trip to Haiti, and in preparation for the trip I used the Creole Made Easy materials, including the Pronunciation Guide cd, and the Workbook. I used all three of them together, so I'll review them together as well.
Creole Made Easy is an excellent introduction to the Haitian Creole language. It provides the basic building blocks in terms of grammar and sentence structure from which to go further. This book is not an "emergency Creole" book, and didn't have anything by way of greetings, phrases to use while traveling, etc. Being in Haiti, those things were very easy to pick up, especially with some of the basic grammar under my belt. The Workbook is split into two sections, the first with exercises that correspond to each of the 16 lessons in Creole Made Easy. The second half of the workbook has more practical lessons like: numbers/time, months/days/seasons/weather, colors, family/friends, marketplace/food, around the house, and health and medicine. Indispensable to learning any foreign language is listening to it, and the Pronunciation Guide cd was excellent in that regard. I found that it was great practice for listening to the native speakers (though even then, I was listening too slowly most of the time) and great for understanding how to pronounce all of those nasal sounds. There were a couple of moments of frustration in using Creole Made Easy: there were a couple of misspellings; sometimes a word or phrase was used seemingly out of nowhere and wasn't listed in the mini-dictionary in the back of the book; a couple times a grammatical structure or phrasing was used and I had no idea why it was used that way, and it wasn't explained. This happened very few times, and can sometimes be a good problem-solving exercise that you need good practice for when trying to have actual conversations with Haitian people.
Of the eight people who went with me on my trip to Haiti, I was one of two who used Creole Made Easy, and the only one who completed all 16 lessons. I think some of the others used the Pimsleur cds (not any books). I was by far the best Creole speaker/listener and felt like I was in a perfect position to learn exponentially more while I was there. I was told over and over again "ou pale Creole byen!" ("you speak Creole well!") which I shrugged off for awhile until it began to sink in that this was true. Also, I wish I would have brought Creole Made Easy along with me instead of the Hippocrene Haitian Creole/English dictionary, because I think the dictionary in the back had a better selection of words and phrases I wanted to say. The Hippocrene has no phrases at all, and often didn't have the words I was looking for. All this said, I would strongly recommend the Creole Made Easy materials to anyone interested in learning Haitian Creole.
The Perfect Little Helper.......2006-07-21
I went to Haiti this year and before I left I had bought this book. Thank goodness I did. It was my bible the whole time I was there and it helped me get by very easily and the back of the book has a very useful dictionary that is easy to interprate.
Kreyol phraseologist........2006-06-02
This is THE book if you have heard the CD, of the same name and/or have some understanding of how words are phrased and the ennunciation of the Haitian Kreyol alphabet. If you do not have those basics down, you might be lost. Some of the pronunciation might be familiar, if you have had French, but since some of the Haitian Kreyol words are pronounced completely opposite of what you might think, you and the person you're speaking to, still may not understand.
All in all, I do recommend the book, but with those above stipulations.

Excellent Phrase book.......2007-01-09
This is an excellent phrase book to use for travelers and anyone interested in learning this interesting language. It has very good phonetic spellings and easy-to-read layouts of pages.
I highly recommend this book as a must-have companion to additional study materials.
Bad product.......2006-03-27
I have found many mispellings and grammatical errors in both english and tagalog in this book. It is inaccurate and inadequate. I would strongly recommend the hippocrene standard dictionary: tagalog-english over this book. I do not recommend this book to anyone.
Suits its purpose.......2004-11-01
This is more like a handbook of useful phrases. For a beginner this is a great start. It by no means will teach you tagalog but you will be able to understand and use common speech. Good entry level book.
Good phrase book........2004-02-17
I thought this book was great for simple phrases, easy to follow, very easy and helpful to use. Great first step in to learning Tagalog basics.
a very polite way to communicate.......2003-10-30
its an easy book to read and understand.
the language used is very polite. you might want to drop all the -PO's when talking to peers or children.
it has a nice brief history of the islands.
I read through the whole book in one setting. its easy to go back and find phrases and words when needed.

Book Description
Here are the books that help teach Shakespeare plays without the teacher constantly needing to explain and define Elizabethan terms, slang, and other ways of expression that are different from our own. Each play is presented with Shakespeare's original lines on each left-hand page, and a modern, easy-to-understand "translation" on the facing right-hand page. All dramas are complete, with every original Shakespearian line, and a full-length modern rendition of the text.

This was a great resource while teaching "Romeo and Juliet" last year to my English 1 students. I was able to explain the more difficult passages to them as we read along in the book. I wish that I had the money to purchase this book for all of my students. I plan to use it again this school year.

Book arrived first of the three ordered at the same time. Book was in excellent condition.

Learning English through context, practical sequencing and practise.......2006-05-25
I am an educator who does part-time voluntary work with individual young adults learning English. I work with some of my students face-to-face and with others via regular email contact. I am not a trained ESL teacher. I have bought several copies of this book for my students. I have waited for a text like this for some time. It is truly excellent. It sequences learning in a logical way for students. It builds grammar, vocabulary and contextual understandings in ways that my students are responding too very positively. My distance students manage their own learning. There is in-built practice work and skill and knowledge building is carefully planned. The pictures and bubble text are great and contexts and linguistic relationships are very clear. A great learning resource - useful with teachers or without. Can't wait to get Vol 2!

Book Description
Miscue analysis has long been the instrument of choice for knowledgeable researchers working to understand the quality of student errors in reading. Now Sandra has put this remarkable tool into the hands of all classroom teachers. This little jewel of a book gives teachers a humane and respectful tool for understanding readers and the teaching of reading
- Lucy Calkins
Wilde offers teachers commonsense strategies to further the development of their students as readers.
- Professionally Speaking
Understanding what students do when they read, and then helping them take the next step, can be easy for an informed teacher. For Sandra Wilde, the key is to focus on the strengths students bring to the process and build from there. With Miscue Analysis Made Easy, Wilde leads the way, offering a lucid, commonsense explanation of what exactly reading is and how it works.
Beginning with a series of lively, interactive exercises Miscue Analysis Made Easy leads us through the thinking processes and linguistic systems that readers use to build their understanding of text. Through a careful review of these systems, we then learn to assess what readers can do. An easy-to-use, step-by-step diagnostic procedure, including a thoughtful retelling guide, helps us to identify and then maximize the student's specific strengths. Wilde also offers ideas on how to help students develop the self-monitoring strategies they need to keep track of their own meaning-making process as they read.
Customer Reviews:
Easy To Read!.......2002-01-31
This book is easy to read and provides so many examples that it is very difficult to get lost or behind. Wilde really tries to simplify the topic and I find the whole Miscue Analysis topic in general fascinating.
great text for getting to know readers!.......2000-08-30
Sandra Wilde has taken the work of Goodman, Watson, and Burke, and made it more accessible to undergrads, graduate students, and practicing teachers alike. She walks you through the reading process, the cueing systems, misuce analysis, and instructional implications for various "types" of readers. I highly recommend this text to those teaching pre-service and/or practicing teachers how to get to know readers, particularly those who struggle with text.

Customer Reviews:
The Joy of Cooking of its day.......2003-12-07
This book is a must-have for collectors of antiquarian cookbooks, even if it is a facsimile of a posthumous edition published in America. Makes me wish I had the appropriate kitchen.
To appreciate what Hannah Glasse's work did for cooking, it's necessary to understand what place it had in the market of the 18th century -- it was the book for English-speaking cooks, even in Revolutionary times as popular in the Colonies as it was back home in England. It's a bit more in scope than a typical modern cookbook as well, including things like beer/wine/mead recipes and preserves that are usually in separate books today, and even an occasional home remedy. The recipes cover much classic British Isles cooking, including Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding, meat pies, Scotch Broth, and a good number of seafood recipes.
The recipes in question probably don't lend themselves much to modern kitchens, unless you've got a fireplace with pothooks and a beehive oven in the chimney. But it's still enough to make you imagine, and to realize that while the techniques have changed, food hasn't changed much in two hundred years and change. The recipes are done in a conversational style that seems strange in a cookbook but should feel familiar to anyone who's learned a recipe at someone's elbow. Don't expect precise measurements everywhere either; you're expected to be able to figure such things out on your own. (One bit of advice: unlike modern recipes, where you can pick out the ingredients and work as you read, it behooves the reader to study the recipe before hand and take notes if necessary.)
As I said, it's a facsimile of a later edition from 1804 or so, and includes updates that aren't distinguished from Glasse's original text (thus my one-star deduction, which is a highly subjective decision). That said, it's likely a faithful rendition of how early America ate, and an invaluable reference to anyone who wishes to learn how it was done back in the day.
worth the purchase.......2000-07-11
One of the best cookbooks of the time period. I use this cookbook to recreate 18th century receipts (recipes) for a living history museum. This book is not only informitive on 18th century cooking in general, many of the recipes can be cooked today. Try an onion pie and with the left over pie crust make kickshaws, a type of cookie with jam. This book will become your primary source for 18th century cooking and with its glossary it is better than many other editions.
