There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02

Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.

Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

Used this extensively when preparing for interviews during first year of MBA-landed multiple offers, not just because of this book but it surely helped. I have found it useful even for changing jobs (not just useful for recent graduates as one reviewer said). Came back to Amazon to purchase yet another copy as I have given away two previous copies I owned. Best best, flip through it in a store like Barnes and Noble and if you like it, come buy online...

One of the best practical guides ever.......2007-05-27

I digested the book, and did everything Dr. Leanne recommended. I tested it by researching an industry I had no experience with, and landed an interview even though no jobs were on offer. I had spent about 6 weeks reading everything I could and prepared all the interview questions in the second section of the book. It turned out that I was more knowledgeable about the company than the manager who interviewed me, so it turned out to be a very strange experience. First, he resented that a senior manager sent him to interview me. He then yelled at me several times, and accused me of lying about white papers that the company had released.

After that exciting interview, I am convinced that this is one of the best practical books I've ever read. Where else can you find a book that tells you exactly how to upstage a senior manager with 13 years of industry experience?

Great book.......2006-08-20

After reading this book I actually got a job after over a year. It helped me a lot with my interview technique which pretty much did not exist. The book is arranged in such a way that if certain questions don't relate to your profession you can just skip through it. The questions are clear (and many familiar) and the responses sound like real people talking and can be easily modified to suit your profession. Anyone who hs been without a job for a long time or short will find this book quite helpful.

I recently graduated and landed 3 offers out of 4 positions I interviewed for, and did so with less-than-great qualifications (2 of jobs were reaches for me). I had a subpar GPA but had no idea of how to properly interview before I read this book. The book focuses on teaching the reader how to portray him/herself as a qualified candidate. Interviewers really only care to see if a candidate understands what the job requires, and is willing and qualified to perfrom the duties asked. The explanation of how to answer the dreaded, "Tell me about yourself," really demonstrates all of that, and learning how to answer that question will give you a much better chance of getting the job you're up for. The book also does an excellent job of illustrating what differentiates good answers from great answers; and also explains how to address weaknesses on your resume. It's an inexpensive investment, and if you follow what the author suggests, you'll certainly do much better in your interviews. Two suggestions I have would be to structure your answers, and to PRACTICE. Interviewing isn't that difficult once you know what to do and practice a little bit. If you recently graduated, I would go so far as to say this book is a necessity.

I'm an Asian, not an Idiot.......2007-02-23

Let me save you some money...because if you're Asian, you're definitely all about saving money:

Section 1: You're Asian. That means you're reserved and don't like to toot your own horn. Let me tell you a story about Bobby Chang... (repeat 50 times)

Section 2: You're raised to only want to be a doctor or a lawyer and business is only a backup. You should be less reserved, toot your own horn, and find a job you really love *but* that doesn't mean you're less Asian! Let me tell you a story about Suzie Lee...(repeat 50 times)

Section 3: Even though I encouraged you to do whatever you want in the previous section, now I'm going to tell you how to get ahead in business because you're Asian, and that's obviously the job you're in.

I understand she had to make generalizations to make the book appealing to a diverse group of people, but it's so watered down that it's near meaningless. She repeats herself so much that the actual content could be boiled down to 10 pages or so.

Most of book is spent describing what it means to be Asian. While this was done succinctly on one page, the descriptions were then repeated over and over again until it became a charicature. I get it already. It's not like I didn't already spend over half my life living amongst non-Asians and haven't analyzed or overanalyzed all the ways I'm different. Most of my Asian friends are a pretty self-aware bunch.

Where the book could've been most helpful, it was pretty much useless. Instead of giving tips on how to change the habits she identified, her advice boil down to "change your ways," "here are some things you can say," or "this is what I told this one guy and it changed his life." She has a few good tips here and there, but most of the examples she gives of things you can say sound really unnatural and brown-nosey. Her job advice seems geared for some generic 'Office Space' role. In addition, her self-assessment tests provide no way for you to assess them after you've taken them.

If this were a book on how to be a faster runner, it would go something like this:
You run slow. You need to run faster because you run slow. Other people can see you run slow. Therefore, you should run faster. Here's a stopwatch. You should time how fast you run, but I'm not going to tell you how to run faster or what your speed means. I gave Johnny Kim a pair of new sneakers and now he's in the Olympics.

WTF?!

I gave it two stars for those Asians out there who dodn't realize how Asian-y they're being. This book could be a tremendous help to them. It's also always nice to hear someone confirm what you think and tell you how others perceive you. But if you already realize your shortcomings and someone telling you to "speak up" isn't all the encouragement you need to change, then look elsewhere or just skim it in the bookstore.

Good start but too generalised.......2007-01-03

The author has attempted a subject that is not written or discussed widely and the attempt is commendable. However, the book is packed with generalisations on cultural behavior and most importantly does not differentiate between how culture is perceived or received in different parts of America. As an asian who has survived 20+ years of corporate america, I have learnt that the hard way - it is very important to choose a business that openly supports and promotes diversity, that is not the same thing as just hiring asian people or other immigrants. If choosing such places is not possible or too restrictive, then learn to work WITHIN the stereotype, not without. If you want to be 'one of them' in a place that does not value diversity you'd probably end up losing values that you are respected for, stereotyped though they may be - hard work, loyalty and so on.As another reader says traits such as aggressiveness, speaking up to one's boss etc are seen pretty widely among asians in other parts of the world simply because it is more acceptable. Most of the 'negative' behaviors such as cliques, not showing emotion, not socialising etc are simply a result of wanting to belong.
Socialising with people who do not regard your background with respect is very difficult - it is VERY common in many workplacesto be in an all white group and not able to get a single word in (now is that a clique or not??:). AND, when was it acceptable in America to show emotion in workplaces? Please give me a break. Even americans who do so are not respected or thought of as 'not cool'.

The basic advice I have to most asians - find a workplace that supports diversity, if not learn to operate within your stereo type. After a decade or so of experience learn to start your own shop so that these barriers are minimised - at the very least be a consultant so that there is no need to stress over what the company stands for. And lastly Asian values such as team spirit and respect for elders or bosses are not to be thrown away or discarded, respect the fact that you inherited them because most americans are clueless especially as far as team spirit goes.

All in all a good start but long way to go.

Must read for any asian.. .......2006-07-17

Its a nice read contrasting cultural background and biases of different asians, and how that hinders progress in corporate america. Must read for any asian. Few things I already knew having worked for sometime. But its a good review material when you take a step back and rethink the way you operate.

Important Book for All Asians--Even the Very Americanized.......2006-05-30

There's a term for Asians like me. I'm what you call a banana--someone who is clearly Asian by appearance but identifies little as one due to a very American upbringing. So, I was at first skeptical when I picked up this book dedicated to helping Asians navigate and succeed in a corporate environment. After reading the book, however, I discovered a lot of useful material, and I am certain that this book would be even more helpful for someone who is yellow both inside and out.

I realized that regardless of whether I identify as Asian, people around me perceive me as Asian. This fact presents certain challenges in the working world. In addition to sharing many other perspectives, Jane offers tips on how to handle this situation, how to communicate effectively at work, and how to find mentors. She also includes several exercises to help you gauge your interests, strengths, and weaknesses. Finding a job that is right for you helps you perform better when you are there, but it does not guarantee success. Because some Asian values put us at a disposition at work, we need to be particularly aware of those traits and shift gears accordingly when we are at work.

A Ladder Lift for Asian Professionals.......2006-03-09

As the first book of this kind, this book has done an excellent job in provoking thinking and providing valuable career advice for business professionals with Asian ethnic background.

I highly recommend it to any Asian who works in North America or whose bosses happen to be white.

In contrast to other general career books, the book has done a great job to emphasize how important the soft skills like presentation and interpersonal skills are. Traditionally, Asians especially Chinese focus more on the hard skills like math, PC skills, probably under the influence of Confusian. (Confusian said: "A person of virtue should be quick in action but reluctant in words) Jane also covers the major weaknesses Asian people exhibit in North American business. I think her summary is insightful, comprehensive and worth to be kept for frequent reference. Jane also presents valuable anecdotal feedbacks on how westerners characterise Asian.

However, the book is far from being perfect. Several arguments are obviously out-of-date or only true in very few small and remote cities. For example, white people tend to think Asian-like people were not born in America. And Jane didn't do a good job in distinguishing the personality differences and the cultural differences. For example, the author cited that one Chinese girl just came to U.S but appreared to be more American than an Asian man born in America. I don't think it correct that if a person stands for herself, the action should be categorized as "American". it might be more due to the personality.

If Jane had more experience working in Hongkong, New Dehli, Singapore, and etc., she would have noticed that many many Asians have what she calls "American" attributes like aggressiveness, out-spoken, not afraid to confrontation.

Jane also tried to write a career encyclepedia, which was a bit over-ambitious goal. Readers will be better off to turn to other books for help on tactics like interview skills. The evaluation provided in the book is far from being sophisticate and also out-of-date. I will suggest you rely other general personality evaluation to get better understanding of yourself.

Obviously, Jane doesn't have much exposure to the rich traditional Asian literature(like one of the most famous, The Art of War). Some weaknesses she cites in the book can easily, in my humble opinion, overcome by drawing from the traditional values. This limited exposure also prevents her from providing much better career strategies.

Nevertheless, the book has inspired deep reflection and thinking, some of which is already reflected in this review.

This book is full of information and negotiating strategies that are very useful for more junior executives, where hiring an employment attorney is probably not necessary. It enables you to do a decent job of getting the most you can without going over the line. It is especially good at giving practical examples that can help you make tradeoffs that create win-win outcomes (most negotiating books have this concept but are too abstract). Finally, it is very helpful in making sure you are protected if things don't work out. I bought some of the other recommended books in this category, but they are much too basic if you are an executive.

I bought this book recently when I was changing my job. I was desperate to take the new job and would have taken the job even without negotiation.This book provided me the strategies to increase my salary by almost 10%. The book has several good examples ( that fit very well atleast to my situation ).

A must read even if you are not changing jobs.

Excellent book - The author's approach is very logical and he clearly has the experience to validate his comments. He uses sound principles, excellent examples and memorable quotes. I would definately recommend this book - an excellent book which is hard to put down.

I actually took Prof. Miller for a course in negotiating and he was excellent. If you're not lucky enough to get to see him in person, read this book. He was on the management side and knows what they're thinking. If you incorporate some of these techniques in negotiating your next salary you will come out ahead. Also, most of these techniques can be applied to any negotiation. Read it, you will not be disappointed.

Great book. This book covered everything I needed to know to get a great salary and perks that I would not have thought to ask for. It was very readable and the advice was easy to use. I would recommend this book to anyone changing jobs.

I purchased the pdf version of this book online in 2000. It is not the complete version of the book this one is and has only 142 pages of text, but it may have been the wisest purchase I I've ever made! Unlike the last reviewer, I believe Proven Resumes is worth every single penny and much more!

I would like to note that I am in a career field that does, in fact, require a chronological resume, and yet I use the wonderful self-selling techniques Ms. Pontow shares on my own resumes consistently, and it has truly paid off, not only financially, but in my belief in my own abilities. In just the four years since applying this system, my income has increased by half, paying me back a thousand fold, yearly, of my initial purchase price!

I have also used Proven Resumes to help other people with their resumes, and MOST of them have used the skills-based format, and MOST of them have achieved their employment objectives with these resumes. For instance:

A part-time teacher aide with teaching credentials but no professional teaching experience is now a full-time kindergarten teacher. A grocery store cashier obtained a position as a paralegal secretary. Another grocery store cashier, who had worked at the same store for 20 years and had never written a resume before, is now happily settled in a full-time bank teller position. A veterinarian friend who was applying for a year-long leadership training project was rejected the first year she applied, but the second year, after I re-wrote her resume using Proven Resume techniques, she was accepted. Oh, yeah, and I helped my teenage son with his skills-based resume, and he is now working as a website technician / reporter... an incredibly amazing first job!

I would like to make one more plug: These techniques can be used for more than just job resumes. I write up a skills/project based "annual report," if you will, for my annual reviews, so that I can prove to my boss that my skills are growing, and I'm consistenly making the workplace better (You don't stop selling yourself just because you've landed a job). I've used the quantifying and qualifying techniques to write persuasive proposals. And I used a skills-based resume to apply for, and obtain, a position on a state-wide board of directors. It's not just about GETTING a job!

For just a few dollars more, this book has nearly twice as much information as the still-available-online version. It's a bargain!

Be prepared to re-write.......2003-04-16

I purchased this book about a year ago to assist in a job search I was doing. Initially, I was very excited; I felt the strategies made sense and the results were positive changes in my resume.

Unfortunately, the recruiting industry may not be ready for this radical change in resume strategies. Nearly 100% of the people who responded to my resume submissions said "You have a great skill set, but I really need this resume re-done in a traditional, chronological style." Who knows how many never bothered to respond?

Some of the information in the book is valuable, especially the keyword mapping items, but it certainly is not worth the price tag.

Once I made the decision to move on I needed a little help in repacking my experience. This book not only helped me rethink my skill set but also expanded my horizons. I was able to make a substantial jump using some of Pontow's recommendations. I passed the book onto others looking to make a move. Well worth the $ ... and I'm happily on a new career path!

This is one of two "required reading" texts for my clients and the transactional advisors who assist me in my own family busines practice. I've not found anything else as informative, insightful and helpful regarding "working with the ones you love." Great exercises that are readily accepted even by the more skeptical family members. Family businesses have told me they've found this helpful even when for fee or geographic reasons--my practice is limited to the Central Valley--I've referred them to this book in lieu of meeting with them personally.

This book gave tips like make sure you get a good night's sleep, eat well, exercise, and dress nicely. It was all very useless. It also talked about the internet like it was a new tool to be used in the job search. It's 2006!!! You better already know how to use the internet. I guess maybe this is geared towards older people interviewing? I'm not sure. Anyway, this book was not useful to me at all. Instead, I would highly recommend the Monster Careers book. It has tons of practical and very useful advice from building your resume to interviewing to following up - a much more comprehensive and easy to use guide.

Worked for Me!.......2005-02-25

Even though I've been employed since I was 16, I somehow made it to the age of 31 without having to go through the interview process with HR type people and I was a bit nervous about having to do so. After reading this book and one other related book, I started looking for a new job in late January. Using the advice gleaned from this book, I've received interviews for both of the positions I've applied for, they both called me back in for second interviews and one of them has already offered me a position.

The best tip of all was to be as vague as possible with your answers. If they want more details, they'll ask. Also, the comments made by an HR professional regarding the "Where do you see yourself in five years?" question came in handy. :)

This book goes beyond buying a new suit and polishing up your resume. It gives job seekers a feeling of more control by its down-to-earth advice. I especially liked the discussion about positioning.

If changing jobs is your New Year's Resolution, read this book.
I heard Ms. Kay speak earlier this year. In person, she has a friendly, funny, down-to-earth yet no-nonsense approach to finding a job - luckily, she writes in the same manner. It doesn't matter whether you are looking for your first job, looking to change careers, looking to re-enter the workforce - Ms. Kay has valuable advice for you. I followed the steps in the book, and voila, everything came together for me in the form of the perfect job. Even if you're not a job seeker, you'll find the book wo rth reading due to Ms. Kay's "never give up" attitude. Good luck to all.

This is an invaluable book for people who are just entering the workplace. However, it may be even more valuable for those who are changing careers or have been working for years and may have forgotten how to give yourself an edge without seeming to boast.

Ms. Kay has included many valuable exercises that (although time consuming) will give you a fresh approach to showing yourself in the best possible light. You will lose the interview jitters because you "know" what you want to say.

Through the exercises you will gain new knowledge of your own skills and how to present those skills in the context of the job interview, instead of just blowing your own horn.

This is a terrific book and it does work.
