A must read for all Law Enforcement........2007-06-19
I have heard the term "verbal judo" tossed around at work since first becoming a Deputy Sheriff with a metro Atlanta Sheriff's Office almost a year ago. For a few years verbal judo was taught to all new deputies but apparently our department let our certification lapse and as such when I joined it had ceased to be taught.
Well I want to be the best deputy that I can be and thus I went and ordered this book. I couldn't put it down! I carried it with me while I worked at the jail and read it in my office on my down time. In two days I finished the book and felt like I had a new weapon to add to my arsenal when dealing with people.
I liked the book so much, I actually loaned it to another deputy on my shift and like wise he couldn't put it down. Another deputy saw him reading the book, asked him where he got and she then proceed to track me down and ask if she could borrow the book next.
The books made me rethink all the altercations I have had at the jail and even in life. How I could have handle things better. As I prepare to go to academy in September and then shortly afterwards, the road, I feel that by taking the time to educate myself on this vital concept, I have greatly helped prepare myself for not only the road but for life itself.

THIS BOOK TITLE IS VERY MISLEADING..IT DOESN'T GIVE THE TYPE OF KNOWLEDGE IT IMPLIES..IF YOU WANT ANY TYPE OF SKILL, IN TERMS OF COMMUNICATION OR OTHERWISE, THE 48 LAWS OF POWER HAS IT! AS DOES ALL OF ROBERT GREENES OTHER BOOKS..THAT IS AN AUTHOR THAT DOESN'T FALSE ADVERTISE! HE TEACHES EXACTLY WHAT HE CLAIMS AND MUCH MORE!CHECK HIM OUT.THE ART OF SEDUCTION BY GREENE IS ALSO MUCH MORE HELPFUL IN VERBAL SITUATIONS, THOUGH NOT AS MUCH AS HIS OTHER TWO BOOKS.BUYING HIS THREE DEFINITELY WON'T DISAPPOINT

to return to my old , not sophisticated ways of dealing with difficult people..
The idea of "Verbal Judo" makes all the ideas in this book memorable

The book spends a lot of time talking about the background of where these techniques came from and while interesting, more space spent on implementing thes ideas offered would have been more beneficial. Overall the information is there to be used and with an inventive imagination one can develop an arsenal of schemes to be effective in confrontational situations.

If you are a police officer, salesman, teacher, or anyone who may have to work with people who are not always happy this book MUST be in your library. Actually it should be read annually - so you can review it's principals of how to work with people that may not want to do what you want them to do.
Get past the HUGE ego of the author and use the techniques offered. If it does not improve your ability to do your job, enhance your relationships and give you peace of mind - read it again and really implement the ideas. They work amazingly well, and are simple.
I borrowed this book from the library - and then bought my own.
I teach science to 175 fifteen and sixteen year old students. Daily a few of them act like teenagers will (OH MY GOD!). This book has made my ability to keep a good relationship with my students much easier.

The best books about complex subjects are those in which the author has thought long and hard about his subject. Paul Madaule after his years of experience with the Tomatis method, has written such a book.
It is certainly not just about "Why Can't Johnny Read?" It is a taste of the cutting edge, without any fanfare, inviting and informative. The effect of the training does not depend solely upon the music of Mozart for its effect, but upon many other elements skillfully woven together. Here you will begin to undestand the process.
By all means make it part of your library.

Madaule's approach to learning and communication difficulties is very comprehensive. As a mother of an academically underachieving child, his book offered insights to a refreshing, non-invasive therapy. Since completing his listening training, my son is now achieving at grade level! I recommend When Listening Comes Alive for all parents who are looking for a clear understanding of listening-related learning disabilities and possibly a successful option to medication, as it has been for my son.

...well written with practical information and a touching personal experience. Madaule's book is a must read for educators and parents alike. It reveals a component in the challenges faced by the learning disabled which is overlooked by many practitioners. Full of insight and very comprehensive. I haven't stopped talking about this book since putting it down.
fascinating concept.......2000-09-25
a friend recommended this book after having a workshop with the author. the whole concept of behavior problems that can be helped by retraining the ear is amazing. i was fascinated by the physiology of the ear and the fact that the ear brings energy to the brain, not just sounds. i am recommending this book to several friends, one of whom is a special ed teacher.
Help for desparate parents.......2000-07-08
The personal story of the author, his very troubled youth, and the man who helped him overcome his severe problems - Alfred Tomatis. After overcoming his difficulties the author started treatimg others with the same method. In a nutshell: the Tomatis Method relies on the ear and it's function (listening) to treat conditions as different as Autism, Hyperactivity, singing, reading and writing problems and many more. This is a facinating book for it combines a very moving personal story with a VERY CLEAR presentation of the method. Any parent with a child diagnosed as hyperactive or the like should read the book. Any person who is interested in a very unique and original approach to the way our body functions shouldn't miss this one. And actually it is a must-read for all teachers.

I bought this tape expecting the "listen and learn" method of better speech that was promised. There are only two short exercises given in the 2 tapes, the rest is general information; some of which is unecessary, such as interview tips and how to keep your vocal chords healthy. I wish they would have taken more time to give concrete help.
