Book Description
For decades indispensable, the AMA Manual of Style continues to provide editorial support to the medical and scientific publishing community. Since the 1998 publication of the 9th edition, however, the world of medical publishing has rapidly modernized, and the intersection of research and publishing has become ever more complex. The 10th edition of the AMA Manual of Style, to be published in early 2007, brings this definitive manual into the 21st century with a broadened international perspective. In doing so, the 10th edition has expanded its electronic guidelines, with the understanding that authors now routinely submit articles through online systemsa nd often cite Web-only content. Ethical and legal issues receive increased attention, with detailed guidelines on authorship, conflicts of interest, scientific misconduct, intellectual property, and the protection of individuals' rights in scientific research and publication. The new edition examines research ethics and editorial independence and features new material on indexing and searching as well as medical nomenclature. JAMA and the Archives Journals, one of the most respected groups of medical publications in the world, have lent their expert staff of professional journal editors, half of whom are physicians, to the committee that has produced this edition. Extensively peer-reviewed, the forthcoming 10th edition will provide a welcome and improved standard for the growing international medical community. More than a style manual, this 10th edition offers invaluable guidance on how to navigate the dilemmas that authors and researchers and their institutions, medical editors and publishers, and members of the news media who cover scientific research confront in a society that has thrust these issues center stage.

Worth the Wait.......2007-05-09
I've been waiting for this book since becoming a medical editor 3 years ago. It is completely updated for modern-day medical communications and now includes extensive sections with Internet-related information. I use it nearly every day and absolutely love it.
At long last, the go-to guide for medical writers and editors is revised.......2007-04-17
At long last, the 10th Edition of the AMA Manual of Style is finally available, and I am happy to say it was worth the wait. As an editor who has worked in medical journals, scientific Web sites, and an agency specializing in pharmaceutical advertising, I found the 9th edition to be, at times, a bit dated and not as easy to navigate as I would have hoped. Most of those problems have been resolved in the 10th edition, as well as the inclusion of some new information that I didn't even know I was missing until I found.
The following is a list of changes in the new edition of the style guide that I found particularly helpful and relevant, and will hopefully be a quick go-to guide when you're debating whether to buy the new version or hold fast to the 9th edition.
- The section on Correct and Preferred Usage has moved from Chapter 9 to Chapter 11 and includes a wealth of information that was not in the previous edition. There is more information about the difference between race and ethnicity and when it's relevant to include sexual orientation in a scientific manuscript.
- An extended section on electronic references (3.15, 63-72). This new info is highly relevant considering since 1998 (when the 9th edition was released) there have been a number of innovations with the Internet and a number of authors choose to use the Web as sources of information.
- The section on manuscript preparation is vastly improved and expanded (Ch 4). It includes more information on the different types of tables and figures as well as new guidelines for the use of symbols and footnotes.
- Of particular interest to journal editors, there is more information on authorship requirements, conflicts of interest, sources of funding, and copyright and permissions basics (Ch 5).
- The section on capitalization demonstrates that, not only can the AMA editors laugh at themselves, but that they're also familiar with the lyrics of Coolio (eg, There is no party like a West Coast party because a West Coast party doesn't stop. 10.3, 375). The section on capitalization also includes newer terms like iBook and eBay that are more relevant to modern writing (10.8, 380).
- In terms of grammar, some of the rules that always give editors trouble are more explicitly outlined and in more detail. There's a longer section on the use of that and which (7.2, 318), which I still have to look up occasionally. A final ruling on the health care vs healthcare debate (always 2 words, per AMA, 11.1, 395). And more specific rules on false/parenthetical plurals and sentences with compound subjects (7.8)
- A change in the use of states in references. All will use postal codes now, instead of the former abbreviations (14.5, 451-455).
- An expanded section on international currency (18.5.12, 817-819).
- The section on terminology has been expanded to include information about different specialties, including psychiatry, ophthalmology, and obstetrics (Ch 15). This section also includes a new chart with human viruses that is expanded and easier to navigate (15.14.3, 762-767).
- There is a more comprehensive copyediting section, including information on editing numerical information (21.1, 907; 23.1, 929-933).
- And finally, and most importantly for all newer medical editors and writing, there is a more informative resources guide with professional organizations aimed at scientific writers and editors as well as grammar and editing resources (25, 967-976).
As a whole, I'm very pleased with the new edition of the AMA style guide, and can't wait to incorporate the new changes into my own work.

Book Description
The Concise Rules of APA Style offers essential writing and formatting standards for students, teachers, researchers, and clinicians in the social and behavioral sciences. This easy-to-use pocket guide, compiled from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, provides complete guidance on the rules of style that are critical for clear communication. Readers will learn how to avoid the grammatical errors most commonly reported by journal editors; how to choose the appropriate format for statistics, figures, and tables; how to credit sources and avoid charges of plagiarism; and how to construct a reference list through a wide variety of examples and sources.
How does the Concise Rules differ from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association? The Publication Manual remains the best source for broad background information about scientific publishing. It provides guidance on designing research, identifying the parts of a scholarly article, understanding the process of journal publication, and submitting articles for publication. The Concise Rules, by comparison, targets only those rules writers need for choosing the best words and format for their articles. It offers a comprehensive list of essential writing standards in a convenient, easily retrievable format.
In addition to guidance on grammar points that have challenged writers in the social sciences, the Concise Rules provides suggestions for reducing bias in language; reviews the mechanics of style for punctuation, spelling, capitalization, abbreviation, italicization, headings, and quotations; examines the preferred use of numbers as well as standards for metrication and statistics; provides guidance for the construction and formatting of tables, figures, and appendixes; and offers clear examples and models for referencing ideas and constructing error-free reference lists.
Available in a light-weight, spiral-bound format, the Concise Rules will travel easily from home to school to office.

Stefplans.......2007-05-12
I thought this would be a more helpful book than the APA Publication Manual, but I was wrong. This small volume does not cover enough items that I need to write a graduate level paper. I suggest purchasing only the Publication Manual.
APA guidlines review.......2007-05-11
good reference for research papers, only wished it had better examples easier to locate instead of having to read every chapter to search for format.
Great Reference.......2007-03-22
This book is a great reference for the college student that is trying to figure out the APA Referencing Rules.
Great but complex.......2007-01-10
I found the book very helpful but complex. I rated it a four because it is accurate, absolutely correct. I had hoped it would simplify the process but found that other sites or reference material much simpler to understand for a first year student. It is a great guide!
Concise was too concise.......2007-01-03
This is probably a useful book for someone who is familiar with APA style. For someone loke myself who had no knowledge of the style rules it was of little use. I'd suggest buying the full version of APA style rules if you're just learning the format.

Composition teachers throughout the English-speaking world have been pushing this book on their students since it was first published in 1957. Co-author White later revised it, and it remains the most compact and lucid handbook we have for matters of basic principles of composition, grammar, word usage and misusage, and writing style.
Book Description
This is the braille version of the timeless reference book. According to the St. Louis Dispatch, this "excellent book, which should go off to college with every freshman, is recognized as the best book of its kind we have." It should be the ". . . daily companion of anyone who writes for a living and, for that matter, anyone who writes at all" (Greensboro Daily New). "No book in shorter space, with fewer words, will help any writer more than this persistent little volume" (The Boston Globe). Two volumes in braille.

The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition.......2007-06-27
This is a perennial classic -- brief, terse, pithy approach to the basics of good grammar. Well worth your time and money.

For writing as communication but not necessarily for writing as art.......2007-06-18
This is a book which teaches how to write in a clear, concise way. It teaches how to communicate most effectively one's meaning. It is a standard guide which means it can help in standard writing only. Professor Strunk at Cornell and his pupil E.B. White( Who revised and expanded his teacher's work decades after first being acquainted with it) have a clear approach on how to write correctly. But such advice cannot really be of major help to those who are interested in writing as art. Consider the styles of Joyce, of Kafka, of Kierkegaard, of Henry James and see how small these rules appear before the ambiguities, repetitions, digressions, indirections of these great masters.
This small work has been of great help and will be of great help to many- but not on the highest level of writing as Art.
An essential tool.......2007-06-08
This little book should be on the desk of anyone whose profession requires him or her to communicate via the written word.
My only gripe (and it's why I give it four stars instead of five) is the book's use of writing examples that are stylistically archaic and often contradict the authors' basic rules.
Best handbook for writing you'll find.......2007-05-25
I should have had this book during my grad student years while I taught a technical writing course for engineers. The full time instructor spontaneously vanished, so myself and another teaching assistant were left to teach the class with only a syllabus and a lame textbook. For about a year and a half I taught that course and was convinced it was impossible to teach grammar - but I didn't have the right tool. I changed the syllabus repeatedly, whittling away and some larger goal that I couldn't define. I just couldn't get the difference between active and passive speech through their heads (among other things), so I settled for the tried and true Intro-Body-Conclusion ten pager essay and graded them on format and execution. I tried to use context to pull them out of poor habits, but I still had paper titles like "The Internet in the United State's" (sic).
Some time later, when I was doing research, writing papers, and beginning my thesis work, a light went off in my head. I remembered an internship I had where my mentor told me to pick up a copy of a writing handbook, and for some reason I kept thinking "Charlotte's Web?" in my head. I Googled the book and eventually found Strunk and White. The day I got it I instantly recognized its value.
Tucked away in this short and concise little book are gold nuggets of information. Besides the well known tips about prepositions and run ons, there are well-written examples of commonly misused words, such as "comprise" and "effectual". The examples are hilarious and perfectly suited for instruction. The book is not a disorganized lump of opinions about writing style, rather it is well sorted with bold and italics to set off rules and lists about certain elements of style that should be considered by any writer.
I give this book as a gift to anybody taking on a writing endeavor, and I keep my own copy on my bookshelf at work. I was tempted to put "As a matter of fact (comma)" at the beginning of the previous sentence, but Strunk would slap my hand for that. It is a useless phrase that adds no value to the sentence.
At work, we are constantly writing technical reports and proposals and I often reach for this book when I'm attempting to clean up my mental-fatigued ramblings. I should have had this book in my teaching years, and if I could go back, I'd pay for all of the books myself if it meant the kids would keep their copy for their personal collection.
On a practical note, buy this book in addition to "The Little, Brown Handbook" by Fowler. Between the two of them you will be well equipped to tackle the complexities of technical or descriptive writing.
I Love the English Language.......2007-05-22
There is no better or more concise guide to proper English grammar, syntax, and use anywhere. I always have this book within an arm's reach.
I am a physician and scientist who loves his native language. There is no superior tongue on this Earth for prose, poetry, scientific literature, passion, joy, and grief. The cadence of the King James Bible is as beautiful as it was when written. Learn the fundamentals of the language and buy this book. You will need no other, though many are offered on this web site. I use it when tutoring those struggling to learn English as their second language, and they find it clear and helpful, as long as they have mastered the basics.

Customer Reviews:
confused about the pronounciations of "S", "Z", "SH" sounds, etc........2007-06-12
In most other pronunciation books, it is said that when pronouncing "S", you should put your tip of togngue just behind your top teeth. However in this book, you are required to put your tip of tongue behind your bottom teeth. Why is that? I am completely confused. And the same thing occurs to "z", "sh", and other sounds.(see page 6.1).
Can one native sound be produced in multiple ways?
It's the best!.......2007-03-14
I recently purchased this product. I haven't got immensed into it but from listening to the CDs, it's concise, and applicable to daily conversations. I especially like the fact that it used the voices of both male and female. Other products I've perused only use one gender. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to speak standard American English.
A complement to Ann Cook's American Accent Training.......2007-01-17
I bought this book because although I can pronounce words perfectly in English, I still have some problems with intonation. I have used Ann Cook's American Accent Training but there were still things not really covered in her book. The American Accent Guide has only two chapters on the subject but the last chapter on Intonation is covered in a way that I had never seen and goes beyond Cooks' book. It's really good. I highly recommend it but if your main interest is on intonation, you should also buy the American Accent Training since the latter has more exercises on intonation. However, if you also have problems with the sounds of English, The American Accent Guide is the perfect book for you. Maybe the only one you will ever neeed. My wife who is a U.S. born American is not happy with the book because I'm really losing my Brazilian accent which she thinks is very sexy. She says I sound too much American now. Well, if you're like me, that's not a bad thing, is it? We can always work on the sexy part some other way.
An Excellent Work.......2007-01-09
This is a complete and well rounded work. Eventhough I have been living in the US for over 17 years and earned an AS and a BS, I found myself having difficulties in the pronunciation of the english words. I have gotten a lot of helps from my kids, however after applying the American Accent Guide to my daily routines for a couple months, I have been feeling a lot more confident to express myself. The digital media is professionally prepared and the speakers are pleasant and very well articulated. I used the cds in my car and also ripped them into my mp3 player to listen to when I am excercising and riding with someone.
The Accent guide has helped me to be more aware of the subtle nature of the English Language. If you would like to speak the American Idiom better and more fluently this is a great resource to have. It works!!!!
In terms of bang-per-buck, I think one will be hard-pressed to find a better investment........2007-01-05
This book and CD program provides a systematic and intuitive approach for ESL learners who wish to improve their English at their own pace. Good investment for the price.
First, my native language is Chinese. I have been in the US for six years; and have had no intensive training in English. I consider myself an average, or slightly above average, ESL learner. Like many native speakers of syllabic languages, I had a tendency to apply the stress and intonation patterns of my first language when speaking English. In addition, I used certain vowels interchangeably. Listening to radio or hiring a tutor did not help much because I still couldn't figure out what to listen for and how I should sound. I always felt uncertain when speaking English.
The American Accent Guide has definitely been a big help and is the most insightful material I have used. The lessons can work as individual modules, but if you go through them in order a few times you will see that the organization is integral to gradually raising your awareness of how the speech factors work together to form the American accent.
The American Accent Guide also does a great job in conveying the ideas through integrating visual and audio aids. The Rhythm section is a good example: the practice sentences come with markings to show the stress in sentences, and the CD walks you through sets of sentences that have the same rhythm structure, which brilliantly demonstrate the idea of how to use stress and rhythm to improve the flow of speaking. It's really a very intuitive and effective approach that helps with both speaking and listening comprehension.
Another strength of the material is that the practice sentences are quite useful in daily life, unlike many ESL textbooks with phrases that have little practical use and get boring after a few repetitions.
In short, the American Accent Guide is a well thought-out and executed study guide for ESL students of all levels One can listen to it again and again and each time learn something new to work on. In terms of bang-per-buck, I think one will be hard-pressed to find a better investment.

It's important for anyone who creates Web sites--even those who rely on powerful editors like Dreamweaver or GoLive--to know HTML. The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Tags that are being phased out are labeled "deprecated"--current browsers can still handle them, but if you want your site to keep up with future browsers, not to mention conform to accessibility requirements, you will want to get on top of XHTML.
Of course, Elizabeth Castro manages to write books that not only speak to those who are already fluent in HTML, but are good for newbies too. She makes it a breeze to create sites that are visually stylish and technically sophisticated without the expense of buying an editor.
Among the topics covered in her new book, HTML for the World Wide Web with XHTML and CSS: using the (relatively newer) structural tags (like doctype and div); correctly using older tags (like p and img) that have been modified in XHTML; writing XHTML so that formatting is done by the style sheets; writing those style sheets (cascading style sheets, a.k.a. "CSS"); creating a variety of layouts; and dealing with tables, frames, forms, multimedia, a bit of JavaScript (including mouseovers), WML (for mobile device displays), debugging, publishing, and publicizing your site.
As with all Visual QuickStart Guides, this one features clear and concise instructions side by side with well-captioned illustrations and screen shots that show both the source code and the resulting effect on the Web page. The index is extremely detailed, making this a great reference.
Also great for reference are the outstanding appendices. The first is an extensive list of tags and attributes, indicating which are deprecated and/or proprietary and on which page they are discussed. A similar appendix shows CSS properties and values; given the future of Web coding, this chart alone is worth the price of the book. Other handy charts cover intrinsic events, symbols and character Unicodes, and an expanded color chart that goes way beyond the virtually archaic Web-safe palette. All of which makes this a definite must-have for every Web designer's bookshelf. --Angelynn Grant

Verbose instructions, the format is irritating, I question the value of the CSS chapters in this book.......2007-06-13
This was my first intro book to HTML and CSS. The writing by Elizabeth Castro is actually very clear and pleasant to read, but the style of writing is not conducive to learning the material in my opinion. Every page is like this: a brief intro paragraph at the top, then a list of steps for writing the HTML laid out in nauseating detail, then another list of "tips" that didn't fit anywhere else. The steps for writing the HTML are so wordy, it destroys your train of thought and makes me want to put the book away for another day. For example, and this is just a small example among countless others, she feels the need to write this, and I quote:
7. To add the final parentheses, type ")".
That's nothing. Unnecessary details and wordiness like this abound in this book. It is definitely clear enough, but it borders on sounding like it's written for the mentally challenged at times. Personally I would prefer well written paragraphs integrating any info from the "tips" sections, and to do away with the verbose steps, which probably take up half of the book's content.
To make matters worse, the format of the book, like all the Peachpit Quickstart books, breaks the page into two columns, one for text and the other for pictures. This is just poor typography in my opinion, with an average of 6-7 words / line, and it makes actually trying to read what is written very irritating, and it will try your patience. Maybe it's just me, but I really don't like the format of this book at all.
Now, for the actual content of the book. It advocates some things I find questionable in this day and age. For example, in the chapter on Tables, it actually advocates that you use tables for the structure of your website, and CSS for everything else, suggesting that this would be easier than jumping fully into CSS right off the bat. Tables are NOT easier to use than CSS, first of all. Personally, and I think most people would agree with me, tables are not the way to go at all for website structure these days. Yet she uses most of the chapter on tables to explain how to use them for exactly this purpose. Granted I'm sure this is just carried over from older editions of the book when CSS had not taken root yet. But for a 2007 edition book to continue down this path is just bad advice. This is but one example of several where the book advocates using outdated techniques in making websites.
As this book gave me my first formal intro to CSS, I think it actually does a disservice to those wishing to learn to use CSS effectively. It explains the basics such as selectors, properties, and values (although that takes only a page or two to cover). And it tells you how classes and ID's work at a basic level, which is simple. But it doesn't do nearly enough to show you how to write neat and concise markup, so that you don't find yourself adding extra div's, classes, and even style attributes in your markup.
HTML is incredibly simple, but this book treats writing it like a difficult proposition. How many times do you have to be told how to type an element and close it properly? Do we have to constantly be reminded that attributes should be in lower-case and be enclosed in quotations? An HTML book should serve as a reference of HTML elements and common attributes. But many CSS books already include that stuff!
So, what I'm saying is, if you want to learn CSS, just skip this book and get Simon Collison's "Beginning CSS Web Development: From Novice to Professional", an excellent intro to CSS, which I think includes enough HTML that you probably don't even need to get an HTML book. It will tell you everything you need to know about creating a great looking website that is easy to style using concise markup and CSS. That's my opinion. If you feel you need more grounding on some basic concepts of HTML, you can probably find what you're looking for on the web and save yourself the cost of this book.
I'm still giving this book a 3 out of 5 though, because I think it's well-written and does contain a lot of useful, factual information, and it can serve as a good reference. It's just not the best way to go if you really want to learn how to make great websites. If you get it, read the first six chapters, and bits and pieces of some of the others, and then go get a good CSS book!
A great book for everyone!.......2007-05-30
I chose several books on (x)html and css off the bookshelf, and this is the one I took home. Liz has a great writing style, and the visuals are extremely helpful. Lingo is not introduced without description, therefore you're never left scratching your head wondering what a term meant. There is a companion site where you can view the html and css from the book or download a .zip of the examples from each chapter. This book has made learning html and css alot easier for me. I am already pleased with the results I'm getting, and will probably get the VQS books on PHP and JavaScript!
Steve.
Solid guide.......2007-05-17
I'm sure much of this can be found online - but that having been said, this is far more convenient than finding disparate and incoherent guides on HTML, XHTML, and CSS, along with the reasoning behind many of the features as well.
HTML, XHTML, & CSS.......2007-05-15
Great reference book jam packed with all the information you will need to hand code a web page. This book should be in your library if you plan to hand code & create your own Web Page!
Fails to provide clear CSS examples........2007-05-09
HTML, XHTML are explained in a basic way. Fails to provide clear CSS examples.

Writing for the screen is quirky business. A writer must labor meticulously over his or her prose, yet very little of that prose is ever heard by filmgoers. The few words that do reach the audience, in the form of the characters' dialogue, are, according to Robert McKee, best left to last in the writing process. ("As Alfred Hitchcock once remarked, 'When the screenplay has been written and the dialogue has been added, we're ready to shoot.' ") In Story, McKee puts into book form what he has been teaching screenwriters for years in his seminar on story structure, which is considered by many to be a prerequisite to the film biz. (The long list of film and television projects that McKee's students have written, directed, or produced includes Air Force One, The Deer Hunter, E.R., A Fish Called Wanda, Forrest Gump, NYPD Blue, and Sleepless in Seattle.) Legions of writers flock to Hollywood in search of easy money, calculating the best way to get rich quick. This book is not for them. McKee is passionate about the art of screenwriting. "No one needs yet another recipe book on how to reheat Hollywood leftovers," he writes. "We need a rediscovery of the underlying tenets of our art, the guiding principles that liberate talent." Story is a true path to just such a rediscovery. In it, McKee offers so much sound advice, drawing from sources as wide ranging as Aristotle and Casablanca, Stanislavski and Chinatown, that it is impossible not to come away feeling immeasurably better equipped to write a screenplay and infinitely more inspired to write a brilliant one.--Jane Steinberg
Book Description
Robert McKee's screenwriting workshops have earned him an international reputation for inspiring novices, refining works in progress and putting major screenwriting careers back on track. Quincy Jones, Diane Keaton, Gloria Steinem, Julia Roberts, John Cleese and David Bowie are just a few of his celebrity alumni. Writers, producers, development executives and agents all flock to his lecture series, praising it as a mesmerizing and intense learning experience.
In Story, McKee expands on the concepts he teaches in his $450 seminars (considered a must by industry insiders), providing readers with the most comprehensive, integrated explanation of the craft of writing for the screen. No one better understands how all the elements of a screenplay fit together, and no one is better qualified to explain the "magic" of story construction and the relationship between structure and character than Robert McKee.

Write the truth..........2007-06-26
In my experience books tested and proven before being written tend to be the best. A prime example - Angela's Ashes, won the Pulitzer Prize, fine tuned by the author McCourt doing a one man show talking about his wicked cruel childhood, growing up in Limerick, Ireland.
In the same way, Story evolved out of McKee giving lectures, and now, he continues to spread the word.
McKee is definitely an antagonist as opposed to a protagonist, and in person a funny and engaging fellow, and an excellent teacher. As you might expect, he does know how to tell a funny story, and he had a little fun at the expense of some of the sacred cows in the industry. I particularly liked his rant about Roger Ebert, who took his name in vain once but never again.
Anyway, the book shines a bright light on the elements of story. Conflict is to story what sound is to music. Story trumps dialogue in importance. Setups, payoffs, turning points, structure, inciting incident, protagonist vs antagonist, resonating and contrasting subplot, negation of the negation. Emotional value of scenes. Arc of the character. Act structure, rhythm and pacing. Text and subtext, beats, exposition. Character, dimension, step outline. All this and so much more.
Perhaps the most important single thing I learned from McKee is..treatment. The character treatment may be twice as long as the screenplay. This is the key difference between aspiring screenwriters, and successful ones.
I open my book, and look at his personal inscription to me, which I am sure he has written to many others... "Write the truth." I will, Mr McKee, I will.

THE book for understanding story.......2007-06-24
If one were to read Joseph Campbell's, A Hero With a Thousand Faces, and Story, you would have the foundations (not formula) for understanding why story telling is such a powerful medium for communicating eternal truths. McKee says all people have an insatiable appetite for story. We can't get enough of them.
Creativity along with practical steps.......2007-06-11
When I wrote my first screen play it was fun and then I realized I needed education but didn't want to go to school. This book was the right read. McKee is a master - giving wonderfully reasonable examples of what works or doesn't. Certainly a novice screenwriter will benefit greatly.
You wanna write.... read and learn........2007-05-06
Being a playwright, I had had many reservations about transferring my interior visions into a potential movie.
This book covers the basics and gives details as to the 'what' and 'how' of script writing.
I enjoyed his explanations and candar on the theories about what each extreme (artistic vs commercial films) on the cinematic scale thinks and supposes of each other.
It cuts through every excuse one has for not getting to the plotting and writing; a fantastc sense of equality.
I am a believer!
The key is a good story.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
The bible of Writing........2007-04-29
It's a page turner. Not only does it talk about story structure , but the real joy is discovering McKee's insights into human nature .
Through reading this book I have been fortunate enought to write 7 plays and have them publicly produced. It is the best book to read if you have interest in writing. I have since bought many other writing books and still it is McKee's book that I go back to, to read when I'm struggling with a play or screenplay.
It's my writing bible, my copy is all dogged tailed and has marks all over it. If you're serious about writing this is the book for you. I have like bought it over half a dozen times and given it to friends.
If you are serious about creating a STORY, in the real sense this book is for you.

Book Description
CSS: The Definitive Guide, 3rd Edition, provides you with a comprehensive guide to CSS implementation, along with a thorough review of all aspects of CSS 2.1. Updated to cover Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft's vastly improved browser, this new edition includes content on positioning, lists and generated content, table layout, user interface, paged media, and more.
Simply put, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a way to separate a document's structure from its presentation. The benefits of this can be quite profound: CSS allows a much richer document appearance than HTML and also saves time -- you can create or change the appearance of an entire document in just one place; and its compact file size makes web pages load quickly.
Author Eric Meyer tackles the subject with passion, exploring in detail each individual CSS property and how it interacts with other properties. You'll not only learn how to avoid common mistakes in interpretation, you also will benefit from the depth and breadth of his experience and his clear and honest style. This is the complete sourcebook on CSS.
The 3rd edition contains:
- Updates to reflect changes in the latest draft version of CSS 2.1
- Browser notes updated to reflect changes between IE6 and IE7
- Advanced selectors supported in IE7 and other major browsers included
- A new round of technical edits by a fresh set of editors
- Clarifications and corrected errata, including updated URLs of referenced online resources
Customer Reviews:
excellent tutorial, not so much a definitive guide.......2007-06-27
This is an excellent tutorial, and the discussion of the box model in Chapter 7 is alone worth the price of the book. If you think you understand CSS, but you don't understand the box model fully, then you don't really understand CSS. And Eric Meyer does a very good job of walking you slowly through that model. The chapters after chapter 7 fill in that model more completely with additional details that are also indispensable.
However, I think this book should have been called "CSS: A Complete Tutorial," rather than "CSS: The Definitive Guide." This is not laid out in a way that would make it ideal as a reference book.
Overall, this is a sort of book where you won't get an answer to your question without rereading a couple of pages first. Second, the index is quite poor. Basic concepts covered throughout the book don't make their way into the index. Third, while the appendix of CSS properties is useful, a glaring omission is the lack of a browser compatibility chart. Certainly creating such a chart would be difficult, but still necessary (I think) for calling something "The Definitive Guide." Browser compatibility is certainly subject to improve over time, but a baseline list of compatibility at the time of publication would be highly useful, considering that such resources on the web are virtually not to be found. After all, O'Reilly's "Javascript: The Definitive Guide" at least manages to list the standard that defines each portion of the language, whereas the appendix in this book doesn't even do that.
That said, this book has revolutionized my own understanding of CSS, since I read it like a tutorial, and it seems I was badly in need of a tutorial. Consequently, for those who don't understand the true mechanics of CSS, I highly recommend buying and reading this book cover to cover. For those who are well-versed in the underlying mechanics and simply want a reference to the nitty-gritty details, however, this is probably not your answer.
I guess this is as good as it gets......for now........2007-06-01
This book proved 2 things to me:
1. Eric Meyer makes as much sense out of CSS as can be made at this point and
2. the days of internet programming being simple and easily learned by all are over.
If you are going to learn CSS I would recommend this book and simple how-to tutorials also. Do this and you will probably join the growing crowd that believes that the whole gang behind CSS and Standards programming should all be tested for ADD and OCD related problems.
CSS: The Definitive Guide.......2007-05-23
I use this book mainly as a reference. The style in which it's written is a bit too 'dry' for me and it would have been nice if the examples had some color... That's why I gave it 4 stars and not 5. As I said it's a very good reference book and I am happy to use it.
It really is quite definitive.......2007-04-03
I think you need to own this book.
Really, if you're going to take CSS seriously, it's the bible. It covers more ground than any other book and is remarkably clear given its ambitious agenda.
The current edition knows about IE 7, Safari 2, Firefox 2, and all the other recent browsers, plus of course it knows about older browsers and all their weaknesses. Unfortunately, you need to know that sort of stuff too. (How much easier life would be if only all browsers were always 100% standards-compliant!)
One more thing: The publisher, O'Reilly, is a great company. You call them and a helpful person (not a computer) answers the phone. They take care of your customer service concerns quickly, professionally, and in a friendly fashion. That's a nice bonus, but the five-star rating is exclusively for the book.
Another winner by Eric Meyer.......2007-04-02
I've seen graphical guides for CSS and I've seen very complete descriptions of CSS elements, but this book is a great combination of the two. For every styling element mentioned in this book, there is at least one diagram to help understand how it works. This way you can see exactly where the borders of an element are. This book isn't about making things pretty with CSS, in fact all the examples produce very ugly and plain results. The point instead is to show every single CSS element and what happens when you change the attributes of it.
I found this extremely useful for floating elements. There are 9 given situations where blocks are floating in the page. For each example, a supporting diagram shows where the element is put in the code of the page and where it actually will display based on the floating attributes and what other blocks are already on the page.
One thing the book could have used would be browser compatibility references. I know that support for page-break-before/after/inside is sketchy, but perhaps it's just beyond the scope of this book. It's a book about CSS styles and how they interact with each other, but not necessarily when it's safe to use them.

The world is divided into two types of people: those who wince when they see the words Canadian geese in print, and those who don't. If you are the former, or if you are the latter working for the former, the The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual provides invaluable assistance when you need to get your Canada geese all in a row. Countless newspapers and other publications base their style guides on this manual. The entries are arranged alphabetically and include issues of spelling, punctuation (there is no period in Dr Pepper), grammar, abbreviation, capitalization (Popsicle and Dumpster are, tollhouse cookies aren't), hyphenation (none, surprisingly, in ball point pen), and frequently misused words. There are also longer discussions of things such as Arabic names, chess notation, weather terms, and religious movements. Plus you'll find separate sections on sports writing, business writing, libel, and copyright.

A must have for all print designers. Great reference material for graphic and web designers.
Wanna be a reporter? Duh........2007-02-25
If you aspire to have any sort of career in print or online journalism, you should not need a review to tell you that you need this book. Duh.
However, I am going to give this book only four stars because AP needs to stop being losers and end the silliness of capitalizing the word "Internet" or writing "website" as "Web site." It's dumb.
Great Resource.......2007-01-16
This is a great book for anyone, from an aspiring writer to the accomplished journalist. The information within is very valuable and very well organized.
AP Stylebook.......2007-01-10
I bought this for a college Journalism class and it was invaluable. It is now a required book for the class. I highly recommend it.
50 missing pages make it useless.......2006-11-15
I got my copy in early November 2006 and discovered pages 181 - 228 are missing. No sign that they were cut out or torn out, so it must have been a binding error.
I am missing everything between "one-sided" and "Simoniz" :-)
I have used the AP Stylebook for 30 years and love it, but be careful if you order the 2004 edition.

Customer Reviews:
This is a great book!.......2007-06-01
I'm currently taking a CSS class online and often find myself scratching my head witht the 2 books required for the class - this NOT being one of them - I picked this one up on my own and now it's like - "Oh, so that's what those other books meant" - this one is easy to follow and understand - I'm a designer by trade - so any type of code makes my head hurt - this books makes it so much easier!
An Excellent Start to CSS.......2007-03-30
I have bought and read many HTML books over the years in an attempt to write even a simple web page or two, but with little success. HTML always seemed very clumsy and totally illogical. Layout code seemed to be repeated time and time again and could hardly be seen amongst the content (and vise versa). Then along came CSS - this, I thought, must be the way to do it!
A few more books on CSS later (Amazon are making a fortune out of me) but still no headway. The reason, I decided, was that all the books I had read were written by programmers (no disrespect, I do a bit myself). What I needed was a book written by a designer, someone who can tie together the XHTML and CSS from a designer's viewpoint but in a structured and logical way.
Enter Charles Wyke-Smith and Stylin' with CSS.
If any of the above description fits you, then this book is what you're looking for. The treatment is logical, well paced and above all relevant. It is written by someone who understands page design and shows you how to setup a descent web site using CSS. OK there are more typos in the first print than there should be, but they shouldn't throw you off course.
It is not the definitive design manual - it never pretends to be. It is an excellent book to start you on the right path to understanding CSS and using it correctly. I whole heartedly recommend it.
CSS for the novice.......2007-03-09
After struggling to teach myself css from three other books, I found "Stylin' with CSS: A Designer's Guide." By far the best of the lot! Easily understood, excellent examples, concise tutorials and an up to date web site to support the book. What more could you ask?
A refreshingly different kind of CSS book...........2007-03-07
You (if you're like me) have seen a ton of books on CSS. They repeat the basics without increasing you knowledge- or without telling you what you want to know. This book is different. You know the basics- Wyke-Smith tells you how to use create the pages you want. Finally a book that doesn't read like a spec sheet. To the author, Thanks.
Great book!.......2007-02-13
This book explained to me how to write CSS code. It's well written, has scads of examples and there's a web site to download the examples. If you want to quickly learn CSS, I recommend this book.

and what will look best on it! Excellent to refer back to if you're looking to update your wardrobe and don't know where to start, nor do you have the money to spend on a makeover.
Fashion book.......2007-06-27
This is a really great book. There's something for everyone. One of my favorite reference books.
Love the show...too much of a range in the book........2007-06-12
I absolutely love What Not to Wear on tv and I love Clinton and Stacey. That being said, I'm not so thrilled about the book. It covers every, and I mean every, different type of body in the book. Sounds great, but one ends up finding very little information that is specific to them.
For example, one might have wide hips. There is a section devoted to this issue in their book. That section covers a few basics and that's really it. One might find a couple of other sections that apply to them, but the rest of the book wouldn't be helpful, unless looking up information for friends.
Not a bad book and some nice ideas in there, but not very comprehensive.
All the information needed for a good basic wardrobe........2007-06-10
The authors are every bit as funny, kind and insightful in the book as they are on TV. There's a basic wardrobe list for men and women which, if you have it all, you have a good basic wardrobe for work and weekends. The body type photos are great and it is remarkable how their suggestions for clothes really do make such a huge difference. I find myself checking what I'm wearing and seeing if I measure up to the
"rules"! I know that if I do, then I'll look great. A great book for everyone who cares what impression they are making through clothes.
