very good book. read it after reading the saint, surfer and ceo.

1 out of 5 stars Your family will if you waste $16 on this book!.......2005-11-17

I did not read the book but just flipped through it and I felt like stating my opinion.
The book is just a collection of commonsense advices cloaked in quotations from scriptures. You don't need a $16 book to tell you
1. Have a mentor (My Note: No you dn't need one)
2. Carry a book with you all the time (My Note: meaningless advice)
etc
Better free advice is available online or in Project Gutenberg.

4 out of 5 stars Power of Perspective.......2004-08-08

Robin Sharma, the Author says: "When you live your truth, your dreams beat a path toward your doorstep". A practical solution to create a sound Life and strikingly balance life filling in the gaps with humility. Robin refers to his father's words that a tree that has most fruits is that which bends to the ground. And though there are some exceptions he have found in his own experience that it is true-the people who know the most, who have achieved the most, and have lived the most, are also the people closest to the ground. In a word, they are humble. There is something special about being in the presence of a person who is humble. Robin sharma thinks that practicing humility shows that you respect others and reminds us that there is something for us to learn. It sends a signal to those around you that you are open to receiving the gift of their knowledge and listening to what they have to say. The book is door to exceptional life and live life to the fullest with a purpose and attain peace. The book is indepth wisdom with absolute life changing solutions to cope with life's trials, challenges, frustrations and so on. As Robin Sharma recently visited India in preparation for the production of 'The Monk who sold his Ferrari' as a major motion picture, Robin reminded in his speech that wherever in the world he went, he found human beings struggle with same challenges, same longings. All people are part of one great family with invisible ties. Thus, peace is at your own doorstep and Robin Sharma's books are real 'Gem Picks' - Yeah, sure you can surf his website too and hear his Gem voice too! Good Pick & Great Message.

5 out of 5 stars 101 cures for lives of quiet desperation.......2002-09-22

Motivational speaker-writers often seem to merely state the obvious, but that fact doesn't diminish the relevance of the message. We could all use a little jump-start every once in while. Robin Sharma gives us 101 of them in this easy-to-browse-through paperback, and each nugget takes up just one or two pages. Some suggestions are no-brainers: Keep a Journal, Become a Volunteer, Be a Better Parent, Walk in the Woods. Others are more intriguing: Have a Living Funeral, Don't Finish Every Book You Start, Create a Hero List, Find Your Place of Peace. And don't be jarred by the book's title: these recommendations are very much about making the opportunity to live the life you want to and augmenting your worthwhile existence. If you're a typical adult human, you're sure to find words of encouragement and some good ideas here. If you're listless or between jobs / relationships or struggling for a reason to get up in the morning, this little volume may just give you the [rear]-kicking you need. Keep _Who Will Cry_ next to your bed or in your briefcase / purse or in your top desk drawer. Whenever you feel as though you're just skimming on the surface of the day, pull out the book and open it up to a page at random. The advice won't erase reality; it'll give you another way of approaching it.

5 out of 5 stars Practical guide to decluttering your workspace.......2006-05-23

As owner of one of the U.S.'s largest cleaning firms, author Don Aslett has first hand experience with the way that mess and confusion can impede a good day's work. His book shines a light on the chaos, from overflowing wastebaskets to staggering stacks of paper, to (gasp!) the inside of the communal refrigerator. He reveals why out-of-control office clutter is not simply unsightly, but harmful to your productivity and your career. Then, he offers the cure, including ways to reduce paper accumulation, organize your workspace, weed through the junk and create your own filing system. He brings humor, enthusiasm and passion to tackling the daunting job you need to do before you can do your real job. If you want to be liberated from your office mess and experience the exhilaration of a clutter-free work life, we recommend this book - just put it on top of your stack.

5 out of 5 stars Quite helpful.......2005-05-27

This book is a humorous pictural guide to reducing office clutter. It offers many reasons for "86-ing" piles of useless clutter and suggests alternate solutions such as using a briefcase.

4 out of 5 stars very motivating.......2003-02-16

This is classic Aslett -- it will have you pitching half the papers on your desk in no time. Aslett has some good ideas on how to begin to conquer the clutter of accumulated paper, and ideas that can be used in discrete time increments. Of all the clutter / office organization books I've read, his are the only ones that actually make me eager to get to work.

Two reasons I gave this book four stars rather than five, are (1) because of Aslett's gratuitous name-dropping & boasting (when my coimpany was cleaning AT&T, when I was consulting with the top executives of IBM, when I was making one of my many TV appearances with Regis & Kahie Lee . . . ); and (2) because Aslett seems to consider himself an expert on all things rather than sticking to what he knows best. Of course, I've read most of his books, and there is some redundancy, as if they're just regurgitations of former material. If you haven't read his other books, you might not have this perception. Nonetheless, every time I read one of his books I can manage to throw out several boxes of stuff, and after reading this, my office at work no longer has any hidden stacks of papers waiting to be dealt with.

4 out of 5 stars Offices and Classrooms.......2003-01-29

I don't work in an office. I work in a classroom. However, I found that much of what is said in this book applies to me.

I teach science, and have worked in 2 different schools where I inherited the previous teacher's mess. In the first one, I applied many of Aslett's principles without even realizing it. There was so much junk that I couldn't even work. I did almost no labs my first year because I couldn't find anything!

At my new school, started by organizing. Recently, I read this book and was inspired. I went through my storage area and threw out every broken piece of equipment. I also snuck out a few pieces of equipment that I knew I would never use.

It has been a wonderful feeling. I now have room to have a sort of "office" in my storage room. I can find equipment quickly, making me more likely to do labs, and I have created room for the equipment I plan to order that I will use.

I see no obvious connection, but I now get my work done a lot faster. I write a lot of my own material. Before I did my decluttering I was working until midnight or later. Now I'm going home for supper, and coming back and working only a few more hours.

His book is not so big on specifics. That is why I did not give it a fifth star. A few more specific ideas on organizing papers and the clutter I'm required to have would have helped. Overall, however, he covers the general principles of clutter removal and organization, he is inspiring, and, most important, this book is a help.

Honestly, this book made me a better teacher!

5 out of 5 stars This book decluttered my mind.......2002-04-07

When I was the secretary and the executive assistant, I was the best and most organized person any boss could want. When I became the boss, I became buried in meetings, interruptions, customer service and problems, no one to delegate to, and fear of losing something important. In the past 7 years I have bought many "organizational" books - some I even bought twice because they never got through to me (didn't even impress me enough to remember I had bought them before!) to help me tackle the piles of paper. I pretty much shuffled stacks around until I bought Don's book. I started reading it yesterday, and after being out sick for one week, I went in today (Saturday) and in 4 hours, cleaned out 3 years of paper. I didn't just clean - I got rid of. I looked at everything with new eyes. Don has a way of putting all that paper into clear perspective - you can look at paper and see if it should go or stay. It was incredible. Now my mind is decluttered too - just like he said. I would recommend this to anyone who has a lot of paper (and facts) to deal with. His common-sense approach helps you make it your own - there's nothing to learn - he just puts it all in perspective so you can know how YOU want to deal with it. I've never written a review before - but couldn't wait to write this one. I hope this helps some other person tackle their paper. I accomplished more today than I can remember in one day - and know this will help me stay organized and cut back on the 70 hr weeks I normally put in. My employees respect me, but I always felt out of control with all that paper staring me (and everyone else) in the face. Now my office looks like I am in control! Thanks, Don!

It's about time! Julie Morgenstern has written an organizing book that covers a new way of looking at the task of organizing effectively without labeling or blaming the person behind the lack of organization. Rather, she says, people who don't organize just never learned how to organize, through no fault of their own--after all, it's not a skill that's taught in school. That said, she gets down to work helping you figure out an organizing system that will really work for you, not a system based on cookie-cutter filing concepts or special storage units.

Morgenstern's "from the inside out" system begins by laying out the possible reasons for a failure of organization: technical errors (like having a complex organizing system that breaks down), external realities (like not enough space for your belongings), and psychological obstacles (like fear of failure--or success). Then, her Analyze and Strategize steps help create a plan of action based on your needs and goals, and the brief chapter called "Attack: Getting the Job Done" offers basic ideas for making space. The largest section of the book, "Applying What You've Learned," addresses the specifics of organizing workspaces, home offices, living spaces, and storage areas. Each section has a "How Long Will It Take?" box that gives a realistic time estimate, and Morgenstern's "Julie's No-Brainer Toss List" for each area gives the permission and encouragement that most of us have been waiting for to get rid of things we'll never use again. The section at the end, "Tackling Time and Technology," is worth its weight in DayTimers and PalmPilots. Whatever your organizing issues are, you're not a hopeless case, and you don't need special equipment--just a little understanding of the problem and a willingness to plan before diving in.

Book Description

Veteran professional organizer Morgenstern has spent years honing the principles of organization into a simple, and universal system. Organizing from the inside out--developing a plan tailored to each individual's psychological needs--ensures, once and for all, a system that won't break down.Morgenstern explains the basic concepts--analyze, strategize, attack--then provides tips gleaned from her years of experience with offices, home offices, mobile offices, children's rooms, kitchens, garages, and storage spaces. Organizing From the Inside Out will be welcomed by corporate executives, entrepreneurs and the self-employed, working parents, students and city dwellers in small apartments--anyone facing an overwhelming amount of clutter, both physical and psychic. Also provided are useful chapters on time management and taming technology, critical elements in any modern organizing scheme.

5 out of 5 stars Organized and In Control: Inside and Out.......2007-06-28

I've spent a life drowning in an ocean of useless information supposedly meant to save the disorganized (that's us!) from ourselves. Unlike those flimsy little floaties you and I have been thrown for years, this book is the real thing-- a strong arm yanking you bodily out of the personal hell you've been sinking in. The clutter, the "where is?" everything, the anxiousness about visitors, the poor choices and bad habits, the "maybe if I buy another storage bin this will all just stop," the paralysis you experience when an integral part of your life has seemingly spiralled out of your control forever-- gone. At last. I never thought I'd say this about a "self-help" book-- but it works. It actually works. It gives you the motivation and the tools you need to truly help yourself. I wish I'd found Organizing From The Inside Out years ago. This book is one of the best investments I've ever made. Period.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best organizing book you can buy!.......2007-04-05

I have read tons of books on organizing and time management, and this is by far the best! Instead of trying to change the way you do things to follow someone else's system, Julie Morgenstern shows you how to change your environment and design systems for the way you think and live! It's truly the most helpful organizing book I've read yet!

5 out of 5 stars Crying Over My Mess.......2007-03-17

I wanted a neater house and I got a couple of therapy sessions along with it. What a great book!! This book can really help you get cleaned up but more importantly, it will help you stop making your messes in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars An unexpected surprise!!.......2007-03-13

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I found it useful. It was easy to read and opened my mind to an entirely new way of using my time. I have heard all the concepts before about managing your time for greater efficiency and while I knew they all were valuable insights they did not have the immediate impact that this information had on me. The best part in each of the sections for me was deciding why I wanted to organize and what I wanted to get out of each process at the end.

So I now know why I want to better manage my time; what three things I want to be able to do easily in my office and how I want to divide my time in order to manage it.

I even learnt that I prefer to manage my time in weekly blocks rather than daily blocks. All my years with Franklin Quest and Franklin Covey never taught me that.

I think this book is perfect for anyone who is interested in finding the reasons behind why they should organize in addition to getting great suggestions on what could work best for you.

I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars What a helpful book!.......2007-02-28

I read this book because I'm starting a professional organizing business, and I found it to be very helpful. It really helps you identify the causes of clutter, and then helps you set up very helpful systems in dealing with it. I would recommend this book to someone who wants to unclutter their life, or a professional organizer.

In Organizing from the Inside Out, author Julie Morgenstern used three main strategies to whip a living space or office into shape: "analyze, strategize, attack." Using the same system, Morgenstern now shows readers how to get rid of chaotic schedules in order to live more comfortable and productive lives. Morgenstern likens a cluttered schedule to a cluttered closet. For example, a closet is typically "crammed with more stuff than storage," and a schedule is typically "crammed with more tasks than time."

Those who fear "time management" because they worry about living uncreative or overly scheduled lives will find themselves reassured by Morgenstern's ability to customize her system. The most important thing readers must do, she emphasizes, is to create a time management system that fits one's personal style--whether it be spontaneous and easily distracted or highly regimented and efficient. "Just as everyone's living room looks different, reflecting the individual's or family's values and priorities, everyone's time management system will look different, reflecting what's important to him or her," she explains. Fortunately, readers can easily customize her excellent advice while learning how to create a personal time map, streamline routine tasks, conquer procrastination and chronic lateness, and manage all the inevitable crises and distractions of daily life. Speaking of procrastination, what better time than now to try this book out--ridding yourself of all that draining clutter so you can get on with living the life you want? --Gail Hudson

Book Description

America's #1 organizer now takes on our biggest enemy--the time crunchIn this fast-moving world, no greater challenge exists--in both our personal and professional lives--than organizing and managing our time. Now Julie Morgenstern, whose bestselling Organizing from the Inside Out has become the new standard in this category, explains how to meet and conquer the time challenge once and for all. Morgenstern's groundbreaking "from-the-inside-out" approach helps readers uncover their own psychological stumbling blocks and strengths, and develop a time-management system that suits their individual needs. By applying her proven three-step program--analyze, strategize, and attack--and following her effective guidelines, readers will find more time for work, family, self-improvement, or whatever is most important to them. As Francis Willet, founder and CFO of Day Runner, says, "Morgenstern shows us how to look inside at our own habits and style to create a plan that works, and have fun doing it."

4 out of 5 stars My Clients Love this Book.......2007-03-24

I just got this book because my business coaching clients often have issues with running a business, often by themselves, and finding enought time to have a life. Julie offers great, easy to implement strategies that help the really busy person get control. I love that she looks at the hidden reasons behind our time management difficulties and styles. I keep recommending it and will continue!

5 out of 5 stars Joseph.......2007-01-10

Perfect. I use this text in my teaching of a college level course.
For everyone who has been trying to be organized...this is the book to start with !

5 out of 5 stars Time Management.......2006-07-10

I have to be honest and say that Time Management from the Inside Out is the first "time management" book I have read; therefore, I have nothing else to compare it to. However, during my first year in college, I was forced to take a time management course and I must say Time Management from the Inside Out was a far out better course than the one I took in college. Not only does Julie Morgenstern walks us step by step on how to schedule our time, but she helps us define our "Big-Picture Goals". Chapter 9: defining your goals and activities was my favorite chapter because she made us dream BIG and made me believe our goals were manageable. I also liked that she offered real life examples so people can relate to them and follow the solution that was given. This book is easy reading but it took me a while to finish because she makes us reflect on many issues such as the current behavior one carries in which prevents us to move forward. She offers several exercises that can help one pin point a problem. This was really helpful. I am a 21- year old transfer student about to continue my studies at UCLA and I cannot wait to put into practice the advice Julie Morgenstern offered.

4 out of 5 stars Truly Effective.......2006-07-06

I can't help but express my disapproval at how a review from 2000, which rated this book one star, is a spotlight review.

This reader failed to realize that this book wasn't written for people who are already organized or know the "common sense" things for organization. If organization was that "common sense," more people would be able to get their lives together instantaneously.

Morgenstern builds upon her previous best-seller hit, "Organizing from the Inside Out." For people who have read that book, I would agree that "Time Management" does not offer much else in addition to it. However, "Time Management" stands on its own on the reader from 2000 who gave it one star failed to recognize that this book stands on its own apart from her debut.

A few choice tips that I have found to have helped me:
- Estimate time for big projects: Most people underestimate the time it takes them to do things. It's better to overestimate or get as accurate a time frame as possible. If you overestimate, at least you'll have time to do other things; if you underestimate, you'll feel rushed and like you never have time for anything.

- The WADE formula: Readers of "Organizing from the Inside Out" know this formula well.
WRITE IT DOWN: Record your tasks in a planner or one area.
ADD IT UP: Estimate how long your projects will take.
DECIDE what you will do: delay, delegate, delete or diminish tasks.
EXECUTE YOUR PLAN: Put your plan into action.

- Doing things faster: Pages 69-75 offer great tips for getting things done faster to save YOU time:
- Order groceries online
- Hire someone to clean if you don't have time to do it yourself
- Pay bills online and do it once or twice a month
- Lay out clothes the night before
- Send virtual greeting cards
(While many of the above tips are common sense, many people are disorganized need a gentle reminder - or a swift kick in the you know where - to do many of the easy-to-overlook things.)

- Ten Questions to decide on whether to keep a document or paper

- Set aside daily time to process paperworl

- Compartmentalize your life into six main categories that focus on your "big picture goals" (main things you want to achieve in life). Now, break your life up into smaller pieces to work your way toward those goals.

If you found the sampling above helpful, I'd recommend that you purchase this book. "Do not stop, do not collect $200!" If the above was not (somewhat) helpful to you at all, you'd probably be best skipping this book - or you're already organized and don't need it.

4 out of 5 stars It sure helped me; not overly complicated..........2006-05-07

I would definitely recommend this book; it helped both by helping me to identify and diagnose my own tendencies and difficulties in this area and by suggesting strategies to address the symptoms.

Book Description

From the bestselling author of Getting Organized, an enlightening yet practical program for restructuring your life to meet the conflicting demands on your time "I should read more, I should work out three times a week, I should be able to see my child's soccer games, I should be able to do it all." Sound familiar? With a growing list of priorities to shuffle in an inflexibly short time frame and a burgeoning affliction of guilt and disappointment at not being able to handle everything perfectly, Americans are longing for a prescription for relieving the pressures of an overwhelming world.

Stephanie Winston, master of home and office efficiency and author of the New York Times bestselling classic Getting Organized, has devised such a plan. The prioritization and self-evaluation techniques in Getting Out from Under will help turn down the noise level in our heads and bring the way in which we live our lives back into line with our fundamental values. A powerful program for making meaningful change to an overwhelmed life, Getting Out from Under features the Solar System Technique, an ingenious new way to chart and pinpoint the conflicting demands on time and energy. Flash organizing tips and downshifting advice provide the follow-up suggestions for adjusting day-to-day life based on the problem areas brought to light by the Solar System results.

3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile reading.......2006-01-30

This was a very interesting approach to simplifying one's life. There were a few concepts I'll be able to incorporate into my own life, but I found most of it to be good in theory and not very adaptable to my personal situation and lifestyle.

3 out of 5 stars Useful tool in time management; not technology management.......2005-05-27

Winston's plan helps people deal with a growing list of priorities and an inflexible time frame. She does not address the glut of technology- related information that overwhelms people today or fundamental issues regarding directions and use of office and household technology.

5 out of 5 stars Useful book that will help you restructure your life.......2002-03-25

Heard the abridged version of GETTING OUT FROM UNDER by
best-selling organizational guru Stephanie Winston . . . it was so
good that I now want to go back and get the book so I can read
all her practical ideas . . . I've enjoyed Winston before (her GETTING
ORGANIZED is considered a classic in the field) . . . this latest
effort switches her from writing about "things" to helping you
restructure your life to meet the conflicting demands on both
your time and energy.

I appreciated the fact that she reminded me about the constant
need to TRAF; i.e., when you have paper, you can only toss it,
refer it to somebody else, , act on it or file it . . . this, of course,
is often easier said than done . . . but I shall try to do so! . . . in
addition, i appreciated being introduced to her BOAT acronym
for breaking very big life goals into a system of organized
tasks . . . all you need to do is brainstorm what needs to
be done, organize a strategy for getting it done, add tasks to
your daily list to get it done, and then time spread these tasks.

4 out of 5 stars Another winner from the Organization Queen Stephanie Winston.......2001-02-01

I must have every book Winston has written, and I've definitely profited by them.

This book is a little harder to grasp because (1) you are not moving THINGS but ordering your TIME and (2) you don't always have control over other people as you would your filing cabinet and closets. Winston does deal with time robbers and emergencies--which are some of those uncontrollable things, and give good hints for organizing your day.

I think it is a bit ambitious to include job changing in such a book , but since this is a task that you must make time for and that many people find hard to schedule because of inertia or unwillingness or the unpleasantness of getting going on a job search, I suppose it is just as well that this topic is covered. But for job hunting, you'd probably need a more specific book.

4 out of 5 stars An Original Approach to Defining Priorities.......2000-04-19

Winston dealt with the external clutter in our lives in her first few books. In this book she effectively tackles the internal clutter which leaves us feeling scattered and unfulfilled. She does this by performing "time triage" in the three main sections of the book. First, she deals with emergency situations in people's schedules, citing examples from her clients and offering suggestions and strategies on how to add time to your day immediately. Then she moves on to "Examine Your Personal Universe" and guides you through creating a solar system technique to help clarify what's really important in your life. Finally, she reveals methods for acting on what you learned about yourself in the solar system exercise. The book is clear and well-written. So why just 4 stars? Perhaps too much ground is covered too quickly, from cooperative housing to changing jobs, but her ideas are a good launching pad for effecting life changes. I needed more help with basic time robbers and did not get enough help there, but the exercises in values clarification were quite helpful. The book does live up to its subtitle: "Redefining Your Priorities in an Overwhelming World."

      Book Description

Everyone has heard the statistics . . . 75% of Americans describe their lives as "very stressful". . . frustration, absenteeism, and burnout are rampant and with the pace of change and globalization, almost everyone predicts it's just going to get worse! Plus, even though everyone is experiencing more stress than ever, they are also tired of "stress management" and people giving them simplistic answers to life's complex problems.

In his fourth book, Dr. Crawford addresses this problem by first explaining why this level of stress and frustration is so prevalent, and why so much of the advice about how to deal with these problems will never work! Using a conversational style that is free of psychobabble, this ground-breaking new book then gives its readers a concrete, comprehensive system for shifting to the upper 80% of their brain (the "Top of the Mind") and accessing the clarity, confidence, and creativity necessary for success in today's world. Life From the Top of the Mind is designed for people and organizations who want to become more influential in their lives, and the lives of others.

From the supplier: Women have made major strides in terms of their jobs although they are still faced with a host of problems hampering their further advancement. Conventional views excluding women from the job market and assumptions about their role in the family have been challenged by the increased number of women participating in the labor force and their efforts for greater career success. This shift in their condition can be explained by the transforming demographic structure and socioeconomic changes. Nevertheless, they still have to deal with work-family conflict, occupational segregation, gender-based pay differences and social isolation. Their employers can help women grapple with these difficulties by offering training and mentoring, infusing equality in the corporate culture, and addressing the changing roles of men in the labor market and households.

            Description:
This study examines the seedling emergence and fruiting success of plant species endozoochorously dispersed by sheep in a field experiment in a Koelerion glaucae area. We designed a factorial experiment (faeces/soil disturbance/successional stage/year) that mimics sheep-mediated microsites and analysed all occurring vascular plant species from September 2002-December 2004. The faeces samples were collected in the same ecosystem and additionally analysed in a common-garden experiment (seedling emergence potential). According to the latter, 28 vascular plant taxa were identified (on average 124 seedlings per 100g air-dry sheep faeces). In the field, 15 species emerged directly out of faeces, only five of which were able to set seeds (the threatened species Medicago minima, Phleum arenarium, Silene conica, Vicia lathyroides and the non-threatened Vulpia myuros). Graminoid competitors were not able to set seedlings in the field but did so in the common-garden experiment (mainly Carex hirta). The total numbers of seedlings emerging out of faeces (5% of the potential) and reaching fruit ripeness (0.4%) were very low. In the stage of seedling emergence, ten of 42 species were significantly influenced by faeces, 11 species by disturbance and two species by an interaction of the two treatment factors (Bromus tectorum, Saxifraga tridactylites). In the fruiting stage, two species profited by faeces (Bromus tectorum, Vulpia myuros) and two species by disturbance (Erophila verna, Corynephorus canescens). Overall, the density and diversity of fruiting individuals were significantly influenced by both treatment factors. The faeces factor showed a strong dependence on year (increasing effect on both dependent variables in the first year, decreasing effect in the second year). The disturbance factor is dependent particularly on successional stage (increasing effect especially in the later successional stage). Our study revealed the paradox that threatened species with low nutrient demands are the most successful direct colonisers of sheep-faeces deposits. For them to reach the fruiting stage is rare but is of importance if new habitats are to be made accessible.
