Book Description

Competition for the best teaching jobs is becoming more intense. Since publication of the first edition, when it was mainly the most desirable schools that were deluged by applications, the economic climate has made the teacher market more competitive across the board, and is changing hiring practices.

Now extensively revised, this book maintains its place as the most up-to-date book available on job hunting for teachers. The authors cover changes in the educational marketplace; the new mandates about standardized testing and public reporting of student achievement - and what they mean for applicants; how new certification standards and schools' requirements affect career changers; the growing acceptance of on-line applications and electronic portfolios; and provide additional advice for teachers applying to change schools or districts.

This is also the only guide written by school administrators. Offering the insights and experience of two authors who do the hiring, it details a step-by-step program for taking charge of your teaching career.

How to Get the Teaching Job You Want enables you to:

* Match your unique talents to the needs of a particular school

* Craft effective cover letters and resumes, using models that address the specific needs of college graduates, teachers changing schools, returning teachers and career changers

* Make effective on-line applications

* Leverage your achievements as an experienced teacher - or, for graduates or career changers, student teaching, substitute teaching, volunteer work or content knowledge - into a job offer

* Locate jobs on-line and discover valuable information about schools, including test results, educational philosophy and names of key administrators

* Design a portfolio in book or electronic format to showcase your abilities

* Practice interview skills using 100 questions taken from real job interviews

* Apply proven strategies for a variety of interview formats, including high stress interviews and performance interviews

* Address controversial questions during interviews

This book covers procedures for applying to elementary, middle and high schools; public, independent, and parochial schools; as well as international and boarding schools. Anecdotes recounting the experiences of real candidates looking for jobs illustrate key points. Access to the authors' web site ensures that you will stay current in a changing job market.

This is a vital book for teachers and aspiring teachers who want to achieve their career goals. It will also be invaluable for guidance counselors, psychologists, librarians and other school professionals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resourse.......2006-04-24

When I first began my search for a permanent teaching job, I picked up this book. I found it extremely helpful in constructing a teaching resume. The trouble with the standard resume format is that the rules do not apply to the teaching profession. After following their guidelines for my resume, I was granted an interview with the school I now teach at. This book then prepared me for the barrage of interviews that followed and I, thankfully, knew what to expect. This book was definitely an asset. What better testimonial than someone who has secured a teaching job by using it?

3 out of 5 stars Interview Info........2005-05-13

This book is helpful if you need to know how to organize your job search and keep track of documents. It contains a list of interview questions (but that is available on the internet). Since the book is written by administrators it would be helpful if they would give an idea as to the answers administrators want to hear, unfortuneatley the book falls short in this area.
The other area the book could improve on is demonstration lessons, what administrators are looking for. I am sure this varies from school to school but it would still be helpful to hear more about the demonstration lesson phase of the interview process.

5 out of 5 stars A practical resource to finding job openings.......2004-03-04

Now in its newly and extensively revised second edition, How To Get The Teaching Job You Want by Robert Feirsen (Deputy Superintendent, Manhasset, New York) and Seth Weitzman Principal, Hommocks Middle School, Mamaroneck Union Free School District, New York), is a straightforward, "user friendly" career guide for graduates newly entering the education field, as well as classroom teachers who are changing school or district job assignments. A practical resource to finding job openings; crafting a polished cover letter and resume; performing well in the job interview; and so much more, How To Get The Teaching Job You Want is an absolute "must-have" for anyone seriously pursuing teaching-related employment in this modern era of constant school related job market shifts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Recommend to all Applicants.......2007-01-10

This book was very informative and also recommended by my wife's hiring company, Eli Lilly.

5 out of 5 stars Like having your own interview consultant.......2006-03-02

Ms. Alexander provides a great source of help with her PharmRepSelect book and CDs. I read a couple of books on the subject and found the PharmRepSelect Interview Insight discs to be tremendously helpful. I combined several books in my mission of getting a job in this field. For under a hundred dollars, I feel that I got the best info available. It's like hiring an interview consultant; hours and hours of help. I listened to mock interviews and practiced my techniques. I learned how to phrase my answers more precisely and sound very professional, which was the key in doing well on my interviews. I recommend this unique package to everyone interviewing for a sales job. Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Gold!! Keeps you in the game! Got me my Job!! .......2006-02-23

PharmRepSelect landed me the job of my dreams. PharmRepSelect is written by an expert in the field that actually knows how to communicate information that will keep you from giving up! The real reason PharmRepSelect is different and better then the other books on the same subject is that it gives Encouragement. Out of the other four books I read about getting one of these jobs, it was only PharmRepselect book and Interview Insight CDs that made me feel the most confident and motivated to achieve my goal. None of the other books I read had this effect. In a job market that is crowded and frustrating with masses of people applying and interviewing, its very easy to give up. This kept me in the game. Of course this book is loaded with inside information, the dos and don'ts, but the big difference is the encouragement factor. If you give up on the interview process, you won't get the job. I landed my job offer because I did not give up. PharmRepSelect explained the mechanics of how these managers choose candidates and how to overcome these obstacles. I credit PharmRepSelect book, audio book and Interview Insight audio CD for landing me a job I thought I would never get! I was able to look, sound and act like the perfect candidate. Now I have the perfect job. This book and CDs are gold.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money.......2006-02-22

This book was not what I expected at all. I thought the information was very general and there were far too many pages devoted to answering questions (where you fill in the blanks) and not enough real information provided by the author.

5 out of 5 stars Read, Listen and Get the Job!.......2005-12-06

Reviewer: James Wheeler "James" (PA) - See all my reviews
Hard to find , but worth the trouble. Lisa Alexander's PharmRepSelect audio book CD is the condensed version of her book. Lisa , very naturally, reads her story about the pharmaceutical sales industry, without some of the anecdotes that make her book so enjoyable; but she has managed to keep all of the important technical information. Lisa explains interview techniques effortlessly and allows us to listen to a real manager's point of view. All of the motivational quotes used in the book are included on the audio CD and the flow of the seventy minute CD makes it easy to listen to. I recommend the paperback book for understanding , her audio book (orange CD) for re-enforcement and her Interview Insight CD (blue CD) for copying successful techniques. Interview Insight (blue CD) is really good for experienced sales people or career changers, that find themselves interviewing again, like me. My only complaint is that these CDs and book are hard to find. After a recommendation from a Recruiter friend to go listen to these so I could polish up, it was a a bear to find them. Just look up Lisa Alexander, or PharmRepSelect or Interview Insight, however you find these helpful CDs-just be glad you did.It made my interviewing much easier and successful.

This book is in serious need of an update! Perhaps back in 1985 this was the definitive source on resumes for creative professionals. Although even then, I doubt it. It is pretty obvious that this book was published in the era before personal computers. Most of the resumes use courier for their typeface and many have random clipart all over the place. It is now 2007, if you sent one of these resumes to a design firm you would be the laughing stock of the industry. The author stresses the importance of color and yet the book is published in black and white. There are probably about two acceptable resumes in this book. I'm so glad that I checked this book out of the library instead of purchasing it. If I were you, I'd skip this one.

2 out of 5 stars no caps please.......2001-10-17

the only prob. i had with it is it was written in all caps, which the book itself warns against.....

3 out of 5 stars Very creative, but very outdated.......2000-08-04

This book has some of the most beautiful, interesting looking resumes I've ever seen. I don't know if fancy resumes with tonnes of graphics actually work or not, but if you are going into Visual Arts field (esp. design), this is worth checking out. These resumes are sure to catch attention. On the other hand, the contents of resumes are unbelievably outdated - they are all from 80's. Many resumes include their marital status, headshots, and all other sort of things we never put on a resume in year 2000. Look at the designs, but get another book on how to WRITE an updated millenium resume!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up........2002-05-14

I found this book to be very thorough, helpful and empowering. Having done yoga before pregnancy, I wanted to know what poses would still be "safe." I got the answer to that question and more. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars excellent yoga workouts.......2002-02-06

This is the best yoga book for pregnacy I have come across. I started practicing yoga two years ago, and I was looking for a book that would tell me what was safe and beneficial during pregancy, how to modify my poses and how to add new ones. This book did it. The workouts are based on *real*, familiar yoga poses, with some modifications to protect you and your baby. Frankly, I worked until the last minute, and never got around to practicing the meditations suggested, but the yoga saved my back. It never hurt once! Don't be put off by the new-agey "aura" of this book, if it is not your style. The workouts are just great!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Career quest.......2002-11-20

Fashion Careers has been an extremely useful tool for graduating seniors and an excellent reference for those seeking new opportunities in fashion and related industries. In these ever changing times within fashion retailing, product development and manufacturing , this book allows individuals the ability to analyze their strengths and weaknesses and ultimately develop a resumé that will help land them an appropriate position in their field of interest. The workbook is particulrly helpful, in that it allows the opportunity to xerox and reuse worksheets as one evolves through their chosen career path.
I recommend this book to all individuals thinking about or actively involved in a job search.

5 out of 5 stars Helped me land a great job!.......2002-11-16

I purchased this book after being downsized as a retail buyer. I used the book to help me focus on what my skills were, and to give me tips for writing a punchier resume. The book was easy to use and yielded great results. I am working again, this time in sales and earning a higher salary. This is a book that will stay on my bookshelf!

5 out of 5 stars Superb College Text for Fashion Career Planning Courses.......2002-11-10

What a joy to find an industry specific text for use in "Career Planning" courses for college students majoring in Fashion Merchandising and/or Fashion Design. While there is no shortage of "Career Planning" texts or workbooks per se, this is the only one we have seen that so perfectly fits the requirements of students seeking appropriate Fashion Industry related examples of everything from writing an effective resume, to cover letters, to interview techniques, to thank you letters following an interview.
The workbook exercises have proven especially useful in helping students identify and focus on specific areas of career opportunities within the Fashion Industry, as well as where and how they might begin their job search/careers. The text also includes useful reference lists of Fashion Industry websites and professional organizations.
As a Fashion Merchandising and Career Planning instructor, I would highly recommend this book for consideration as a required text for Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Design students.

2 out of 5 stars Not alot of bang for your buck.......2002-02-02

I purchased this book expecting a decent sized paperback. I was very disappointed to see that it was spiral bound with a laminated cover and pages that looked like they had been xeroxed. The content of the book is OK if you already have a job in the industry, but if you are looking for something entry level like myself, you will be disappointed. My advice? Don't waste your money, you can find all of the information in this book on the internet.

5 out of 5 stars I can't speak highly enough for every page in this book.......1999-12-30

This is the best manual I have ever read for job search. It is not only the absolute first and last word on getting a job in the fashion industry, it applies to all fields. Every type of possible resume necessary to get into the fashion field is included, with accurate names of companies that truly apply to each job. Tips provided include: a page of several hundred action verbs that can be used to pump up any fuzzy job descriptions such as was in charge of to "transformed", "reorganized", "consolidated", "established", etc. This one page was worth the whole book. Two other pages in the book list sample accomplishment statements that work universally for any job.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for teens.......2005-08-27

This book is packed full with info with teens. Though at some time it seems focused on the obvious (different kinds of jobs) If you're a teen looking for work, check it out.

3 out of 5 stars Good summaries, good resumes, the rest sucks.......2001-08-25

I got this book from the library, and I'm glad I did. This book provides helpful descriptions and ideas of jobs, but it didn't provide the information I wanted on how to obtain them. It provides several website links, most of them completely useless. The tips for resume writing were helpful though. Basically, it spends the first 20 pages convincing you that you want a job, about 100 pages listing types of jobs and what's involved for them, and the last 100 talk about resumes, interviews, and applications. The interview tips are simple like "Don't wear gobs of makeup", no big secrets or really helpful info. To conclude, the book is worth a glance, but the library already paid for it, there's no reason for you to.

4 out of 5 stars The best I've read so far.......2003-06-24

I was taken down a peg in excitement when I discovered that yet another book doesn't seem to grasp truly helpful information for blue collar work seekers but none the less takeing some time everyone can find helpful information in the pages of this book. It's incredibly informative and after reading it I was amazed at how easy it was to impress interviewers. I felt much more prepared for the task or job hunting after reading this book. Makes a great graduation gift too.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for any serious job seeker!.......2000-07-29

There is nothing like going into a job interview, one of the most stressful events life has to offer, and feeling as though you are prepared for anything the interviewer throws at you.

This book is one of the most valuable resources I have ever come across. It is a wellspring of advice for virtually any interviewing situation you can imagine. The writing is simple and to-the-point, yet very engaging and thought-provoking. It can be read either from cover to cover or picked up and thumbed through at random. The advice is practical, concise, and can be applied to job-hunting at any level, from blue-collar to white-collar executive positions.

What did this book do for me?

Before I read the book, I spent an exhausting week interviewing with everyone in my field who would see me. I scheduled thirty interviews in a period of five days, and came away with exactly nothing. And rightly so: I spent most of my time in the interviews fumbling for words and passively hoping that the interviewer would instinctively recognize what a great person I would be for the job. In a nutshell, it was a heartbreaking and deeply disappointing experience, not to mention a monumental waste of a perfectly good vacation.

After reading the book, I began the interviewing process again. The first two interviews I had turned into job offers. Furthermore, one of those offers was for a position for which I was not the best qualified. The two other potential candidates had a great deal more experience than I, but as the hiring manager told me, there was just something about my attitude that made them believe they would rather train me to do the job than hire the applicant with the "perfect" qualifications. So there!

I now have the job I have always dreamed of, and I believe I can credit The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Interview with a great deal of my success. If you're looking for a job, buy it. Read it. Know it. It is such a small price to pay for the delicious feelings of confidence, competence and complete control that you will no doubt experience. Good luck and happpy hunting!

5 out of 5 stars Impossible to describe how helpful this is.......2006-06-12

This book was my savior during my job search as I was preparing to graduate from college. Every book I looked at for help on resumes was designed for someone who already had professional work experience. This book shows you how to take your part time college jobs and recreational experiences and turn it into intensely desirable stuff. It shows examples of resumes by college major, with infinite examples and explanations. It was so successful for me, in fact, that I now buy it as a present for all my friends when they graduate and head into the work force.

    5 out of 5 stars great book!.......1999-02-22

I spent endless hours looking for a job once I graduated from college. A few times I wanted to give up and just stay home. But a college friend of mine told me about this book and my luck changed. I revised my cover letter and resume and the next thing I knew I got three interviews and three offers. Thank you Bob for helping me land the job of my dreams!!!
