It's no secret: we love Touchpoint phones, and the new Touchpoint TP5200 is no exception. In fact, given its features, style, and form, it may be our current favorite.Folded up, the 5200 is the size of a business card. Technically speaking, it measures 3.3 by 1.8 by 1.0 inches and weighs only 3.6 ounces. If you tend to shy away from ultracompact phones, fearing they might be too hard to use, the 5200 may change your mind. In our opinion, the keypad, with its raised, rubberized buttons, is perfectly designed. Furthermore, its vivid seven-line screen (six text lines, one line of status icons) makes it easy to read and compose e-mail, and enter contact information (T9 word works well).
Its distinctive silver and blue flip housing and external display screen--which displays the date, time, signal strength, voicemail, and available battery power--enhance the 5200's desirability. (If your service plan includes caller ID, this screen will also show who's calling before you even open the phone.) Volume controls, a dedicated voice-activated dialing button, and an integrated headset jack dot the left-hand side of the phone, and the retractable antenna extends 2 inches for better call reception.
As seen in other Touchpoint models, the 5200's four-way directional key shuttles through menu selections. A quick right press launches the minibrowser, while a left press brings up your phone book. And the 5200 has the menu options we use on a daily basis, including Call History (10-number outgoing, incoming and missed-call logs), Wireless Web, Phone Book, Scheduler, Roaming, Settings, Voicemail, Voice Services, Calculator, and Games (Comanche and a graphic-heavy version of Blackjack).
We searched for design flaws, only to find two. First, the battery cover tends to pop off easily, which could be a nightmare if you drop the phone in a busy area. Also, the phone took a while to completely power on--we waited 25 seconds on average. (It should be noted, however, we tested a pre-production model, so this latter point could be moot.)
Our sample's minibrowser wasn't fully set up, so we couldn't view the wireless Web in all its glory. However, Sprint PCS's service always features stock, sports, weather, and entertainment updates. Touchpoint phones customarily have fast response times and are well suited for Web use.
You can train the 5200 for voice-activated dialing. The process is straightforward, and we also managed our calendar and other PIM functions using voice commands. The dedicated voice-dial button makes this excellent feature even easier to use. Plus, the voice memo recorder lets you store up to 5 minutes worth of reminders.
PIM functions include an event calendar, calculator, and series of different alarms. Other standard features include scratch-pad memory, text-messaging capabilities, built-in vibrating-ringer alert, call timers, and 99 speed-dial locations with nine one-touch slots. The phone book holds 199 contacts, and each entry can store up to 5 numbers per name. The 5200 also supports carrier-dependent features such as caller ID, call forwarding, and three-way calling. And if you purchase a data cable, the 5200 will provide full data connectivity.
Our phone held a call for 3 hours and lasted for 140 hours in standby mode. Compared with its manufacturer rating (2.5 hours digital talk time, 135 hours of digital standby time), it's good to see some truth in advertising.
All told, the 5200 is a welcome addition to a strong Touchpoint lineage. It's a charming, utilitarian phone that doesn't scrimp on style or substance.

How We Tested Battery Talk/Standby Time
When reading our reviews, you should view the test results of mobile-phone battery talk time and standby time as relative information only. Many variables, including carrier signal strength at your location, signal consistency (including incoming and outgoing calls), display and ringer settings, and battery charging methods and history, will affect performance. When handset manufacturers and mobile phone carriers list talk-time and standby-time ratings, they usually include disclaimers about variable performance and often refer to the times they publish as maximum times. Some quote expected battery life ranges, and in this case you're probably safe to assume you'll experience at least the minimum rated range. Note that manufacturers of dual-mode digital and analog handsets publish battery-life rates for both digital and analog modes, as analog mode consumes much more power than digital mode.
Our Tests: We tested digital-mode talk and standby times with each phone. Prior to each test, we fully charged the phone's battery according to the manufacturer's directions. To test digital-phone talk time, we turned the phone on, established a digital carrier signal, dialed a number in our test lab, and, when the call rang through, took the receiving phone's handset off the hook. When all went well, we didn't do anything else except record the time when the phone died. In a couple of cases, the phones lost the signal and dropped the calls. If we were right there and could redial, we did so immediately and continued running the test. Otherwise, we halted the test, recharged the battery, and started the test over. Assuming consistent carrier-signal strength, this test should represent best-case talk time. And it's worth noting that several phones' talk-time performance significantly exceeded the manufacturers' ratings.
To test digital-phone standby time, we turned the phone on, established a carrier signal, and left the phone in standby mode. We checked the phone every few hours (for what was often days on end) until the phone finally cut out. Since no outgoing or incoming calls occurred during testing and because the phone was not moved, this method should represent best-case standby time, again assuming consistent carrier signal strength.
