If portability is a priority, HP's Omnibook 500 is worth a look. At a mere 1 inch thick, it packs a lot of capability into a small package. For starters, there's a Pentium III processor running at 750 MHz, 256 MB of RAM (expandable to 512 MB), and a sizable 30 GB hard disk drive. There's also a 24x CD-ROM drive, 56K modem, and Ethernet networking. How does HP keep the unit so small and light? One trick is the 12.1-inch display, which offers 1,024 x 768 resolution despite its relatively diminutive size.
