Amazon.com Product Description

Fulfill all your digital needs without breaking the bank with the HP Pavilion ze2315us notebook PC, perfect for students, home office professionals, and families on the go. It features a large 15-inch display, which can easily tackle both spreadsheets and DVD movies, and 54g wireless connectivity with 125HSM/SpeedBooster support. This notebook weighs just over 6 pounds and also offers a battery-friendly 1.8 GHZ AMD Sempron 3000+ processor (helping to provide a battery life of up to three hours), a 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, a multi-format DVD/CD burner with dual layer support, and an ATI Radeon XPress 200M video card with 128 MB of shared video RAM.

<b>The Basics</b>
<ul>

  • Hard Drive: The 60 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is becoming the average size for notebook PCs, providing enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
  • Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 1.8 GHz AMD Sempron 3000+ found in this notebook is compatible in speed with Intel's 2.4 GHz Celeron processor. It's speedy enough for everyday computing needs and running office productivity software, but won't be quite enough for higher-end video editing or 3D gaming. This processor features AMD's Cool'n'Quiet Technology, which conserves power while also keeping the notebook's decibels to a minimum. It also features up to a 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 128 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (DDR SDRAM) is fine for basic productivity and multimedia software, and it offers what's becoming an average RAM speed (333 MHz). It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 1 GB (2 x 512 MB), which is a bit small in comparison to other notebooks in this line.
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, this multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD+/-RW, 2.4x DVD+R DL, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CDR, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM ROM speeds.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. </ul> <b>Screen, Graphics and Sound</b>
This notebook features a 15-inch XGA TFT Brightview display (1024 x 768-pixel resolution), which provides improved viewing in direct sunlight. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It delivers up to 128 MB of video RAM shared with the system RAM. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance.

    <b>Connectivity and Expansion Slots</b>
The ze2315us has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. The 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support will enable it to be ready for tomorrow's 125 Mbps wireless LANs. You get a basic offering of connectivity options, which does not include Firewire: <ul>

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 notebook expansion port </ul> It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    <b>Preloaded System and Software</b>
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Norton Internet Security 2005 (with 60 days of complimentary updates), Microsoft Works, Microsoft Money 2005, MSN Encarta Plus, Sonic Digital Media Studio, Apple iTunes, Intervideo WinDVD, and MuVee Autoproducer.

The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments.

    <b>Dimensions and Weight</b>
    This notebook measures 13.15 x 10.8 x 1.63 inches and weighs 6.51 pounds.

    <b>Power</b>
It's powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has a battery life of up to 3 hours (depending on usage).

    <b>What's in the Box</b>
This package contains the ze2315us notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year from date of purchase as well as technical telephone assistance for one year. Software is also covered for 30 days from date of purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT.......2006-05-23

I bought this lap top on black Friday 05 while out shopping for the ones advertised on sale. Lucky for me they were sold out otherwise I may not have gotten this one. I love it and have no complaints about it and the picture is crystal clear. I bought a small carrier with wheels and carry it everywhere I go. I use it everyday since I bought it and never go on my desk top anymore. Very easy to use and the keyboard set up is great. Compared to others the price I feel is also good.

    5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2006-04-22

I've had one of these ze2315us for a couple of months now. I've always been an AMD fan, and this laptop does not fail my expectations. I'm also a fan of ATI products, and the video card in this model delivers more than what I expected. 512MB RAM, and sharing 128MB of it with the video card is rather limiting. I replaced on of the 256MB modules with a 1GB, for a total of 1.2GB, and it's rather snappy now. The description is wrong, it's upgradable to 2GB RAM. After the memory upgrade, World of Warcraft runs great!

When you buy this laptop, make sure you get a Speedbooster enabled wireless router or access point (if you don't want to replace your router). It makes some difference.

    It's definatly worth the money!

    5 out of 5 stars This non-techno-geek loves it!.......2006-02-06

Okay, this is for all you out there who don't know a RAM from a rap song, and who think CPU stands for Central Pennsylvania University. This is a nice laptop - a bit bigger than some and heavy to tote around, but that isn't what I use it for. In fact, it replaced my hulking, cord-ridden, space-gobbling desktop. I use my computer mostly for the convenience and fun of the internet, along with plenty of e-mailing. It has a nice, easy-to-use finger pad, and well-defined keys; I have found that the keyboard is over-sensitive, however. I've heard there is "someplace" you can go to correct this, but it doesn't bother me enough to go there. Wherever it is. The screen is crystal-clear with excellent color. I play CDs on it while I'm surfing the internet, and the sound quality is good. A bit heavy to carry around everywhere (which I don't anyway), but when I go on vacation it's fine to put in the car and simply plug in wherever I'm staying. I love my "desk-top laptop".

    3 out of 5 stars instructions.......2006-02-02

To many confusing instructions. Why can't the instructions just say do this this and this. I'm a novice when it comes to computers, so I just need simple instruction. To many cd's that don't say you must load or you don't need to. The one time I called the help desk, the guy, Antonio acted like he couldn't wait to get me off the phone. Also acted like I wasn't very smart. I just needed to get going in the right direction. I just needed a little help. The computer, I love it.

5 out of 5 stars What a great PC, for me anyway.......2006-01-11

I received this PC on Christmas day (about 3 weeks ago) and I think I finally have enough time on it I can review it:

As the specs listed states the included features, some would call, can be lacking:
    - 2 USB 2.0 ports: one on the left, one on the right
    - only one PCMCIA slot
    - no "legacy" LPT/serial/PS2 ports
    - no special extra port for a docking station

I should mention I am an advanced level PC user by any standard and I've been using PCs/macs for 12+ years now. However this is both my first laptop and my first HP. I have been setting up dell laptops for my company's IS department pretty much ever day for the last month so that is my main point of reference.

First of all I really like the touch pad. Again I only really have the standard Dell 610s and 410s to base this on but this HP touch pad has a texture to it I like much more.

Secondly a laptop with these specs that includes 512 RAM for this price is impressive, but I think misleading: since the system uses shared video memory, and this is set to a minimum of 32 megs (set through the BIOS/CMOS), the most the actual OS will ever see is (512 - 32) 480 Megs. I would recommend upgrading the memory if you'll be doing anything remotely intensive (just replace one of the 256 SODIMMs with a 512). The system does not have any of that "soldered on" stuff some vendors use, just two 256 SODIMMs.

I should perhaps also mention the first thing I did with this PC install my own OS: XP Pro (comes with XP home) so I never got to deal with the included stuff that came included from HP (e.g. "your mileage may vary).

The mic/headphone jack in front I find inconvenient: I bought a holder to keep the thing up and increase airflow under the unit and there is a lip that any headphones are going to sit on. I could have preferred to have those two things on one of the sides.

The screen is an impressive 15" viewable. And for my standards it is incredibly nice: clear, crisp, vibrant, etc. (but then it's my first laptop). I have upgraded the system memory by 256 megs to accommodate the shared video memory (currently set to 128) and it's running incredibly well. I have only tried a few relatively recent games: KoTOR 2 and Painkiller (ok so they're old). I didn't even play KoTOR 2 since the frame rate was so bad but Painkiller was running quite well. If you're looking for a real gaming rig I should hope you wouldn't be looking at a system in this range.

I play with the video card: an onboard ATI chipset. As an experiment I used the built-in TV-out (SVideo) to play a DVD movie on TV. Using the ATI drivers I made the built-in screen display 2 and the screen display 1 and was able to play the movie. I did this because I wanted the room dark and closing the slide puts the system to sleep (same as all laptops).

I also absolutely love the built in wifi card. Combined with an 802.11g router this thing is extremely fast. The unit isn't very heavy and can easily be taken to local coffee houses or any place else for use. A little large for car use on the lap, but don't do that anyway. The volume controls, mute and wifi on/off buttons built-in are all also nice touches.
I haven't yet had to go very long without an AC outlet but the battery life seems to be around two hours: for systems of this type no more or less than I would expect.

The only gripe I can really name, and it is minor mind you, the CD/DVD burner is on the slow side. Expect a standard capacity DVDR to take upwards of an hour (I know that's slow since my desktop system's burner does the same in half that time). But a DVD burner with DL support (new larger 8 gig+ media, still "bleeding edge" as for as I know) is an impressive spec and potentially "future proof".

And one more thing most users would never notice: the keyboard layout. I use forward and backward slashes...a lot. It's very important to me the back slash is above the enter key (where it belongs!) and the question/forward slash key is near the right shift key (also where it should be). As with laptops this size the number pad is handled via number lock/function keys. I have quite big hands but even I can't reach one hand to turn on number lock with the associated function key. Not really a big deal (I could probably macro it or something). I also found the keyboard to be extremely comfortable.

And yes, the CPU is a "64 bit" processor. That really doesn't mean anything right now, besides bragging rights maybe. I (along with 99.9% of everyone else using a PC and Windows) am still using a 32-bit OS. But I digress.

In reviewer's opinion an extremely good laptop all around, never mind the price.
