Amazon.com Product Description
The Toshiba Satellite R15-S829 Tablet PC combines the power of advanced notebook technology with the practicality and comfort of pen and paper. The R15's 14.1 screen can be twisted 180 degrees and folded flat against the keyboard for full tablet mode, enabling you to take notes and write emails without using your keyboard and browse the Web with a pen. The shock protection system provides this notebook with a higher impact protection (via advanced rubber padding) around key hardware components. Hardware features include an 80 GB hard drive, 1.7 GHz Pentium M (Centrino) processor, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), multi-format/dual-layer DVD and CD burner, 54g wi-fi connectivity, and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005.
The Basics

Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (at a fast 5400 RPM) is becoming average in size for notebook PCs, and it's roomy enough to store business productivity applications, all your important documents and presentations, and a good-sized digital audio and video library.
Processor: The 1.7 GHz Pentium M 735 (Centrino) processor is in the lower third of the speed spectrum for this processor class (January 2006). It is well equipped for office productivity software tasks, from complex spreadsheets to databases. The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max. It also has a large 2 MB L2 cache--which will help speed up your system's performance--and a 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB).
Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (DDR333, 2 x 256 MB) is a good start for running office productivity and presentation software, but you'll want to take advantage of the roomy 2 GB of total RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB) for such multimedia needs as video editing and immersive 3D gaming.
CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. For DVD-R/RW discs, it has a 8x write/4x rewrite speed, while for DVD+R/RW discs it has a 4x write/4x rewrite speed. For double-layer DVD+R, it has a 2x write speed. For CDs, it has a 24x write/24x rewrite speed. It also offers an 8x DVD-ROM read speed and 3x DVD-RAM write speed.
Keyboard & Mouse: This Tablet PC has a Toshiba Digitizer pen,an 85-key keyboard with 13 function keys, and a two-button touchpad.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The R15-S829 features the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video card with 16 to 64 MB of dynamically allocated video memory. The 14.1-inch screen can be rotated while attached to the keyboard for presentations, or twisted 180 degrees and folded flat against the keyboard for full tablet mode. It also includes an integrated audio card that can produce SRS WOW stereo enhancement and SRS TruSurround virtual surround sound via its two built-in speakers.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The R15-S829 has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including both USB 2.0 and Firewire:

3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
1 VGA monitor port
1 S-Video out
1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
1 Secure Digital memory card slot (supports SDIO)
1 headphone jack
1 external microphone jack and built-in microphone
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). The optional Advanced Port Replicator III provides additional USB and Firewire connections, as well as a parallel port.
Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 operating system with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes with the following preloaded software: Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, Microsoft Works, Zinio Reader, McAfee AntiVirus, Quicken New User Edition 2004, Intervideo WinDVD, Sonic Solutions RecordNow.
Dimensions and Weight
It measures 12.9 by 11.4 by 1.51 inches and weighs approximately 6.15 pounds.
Power
This Tablet PC is powered by a rechargeable 6-cell lithium-ion battery with up to 4 hours of battery life.
What's in the Box

Customer Reviews:
Owned 1 year so far -- highly satisfied........2007-02-07
Pros:
- Generally great hardware specs for the price. I especially like the 1.7 ghz processor, the 80 gb hd, and the DVD burner.
- Pen writes very well.
- Screen resistant to scratches.
- Good looking.
- Well-designed keyboard; responsive and smooth, keys well laid out.
- Good screen resolution.
- Expandable memory (I added another 512 mb to make a full gb: helps a lot!).
- Customizable power settings. I added a bright screen-low processor and a dim screen-high processor setting.
- Long-lasting battery.
- Good wireless.
- Durable! I'm a big klutz and dropped it not once, but TWICE from at least 1.5 ft. onto a hardwood floor. Ouch! But the thing kept working like nothing happened. The only things that broke were physical: the a/c adaptor port broken off (now I have to fiddle a bit to make sure I've got a good connection, but it still works), and a bit of plastic broke from the latch (though the screen still closes just as before).
Cons:
- Rather heavy to carry around.
- Poor video card performance.
- Dust and dirt tend to collect underneath scree protector, so I have to remove it every now and then and clean them out.
- Too many junk bundled software.
- Extra Toshiba TabletPC-specific programs eat up memory.
- After a year of extensive daily use, the screen rotation hinge has become slightly loose, though I envision that it'll take at least several more years before it amounts to anything.
So if you're:
- Looking to get more than your money's worth,
- Don't plan on walking with this in one arm everywhere,
- And don't plan on playing graphics-intense games (Age of Empires II works great, Age of Empires III does not),
this is definitely the machine you're looking for. Hope I've helped!
Great product for the price........2007-01-17
I had a 10" Acer Travelmate tablet that weighed 3 pounds to start out with, which was fantastic because it was small and easy to take to my classes, but there was no fan in the unit and there were times where I would reach down to pick it up and it would literally burn my hand, which made setting it on my lap impossible. There was also no CD drive. I knew I had to get something better, and the Toshiba Satellite is what I found.
First I must say I was pleasantly surprised, as I bought the product refurbished with the company stating it had a 60G harddrive when it was in fact an 80G, so that was very very awesome. The tablet was easy to use and big enough for me to actually see what I was drawing, which was a nice upgrade from my Acer.
However, I give it four stars because there are a few annoyances. The battery life, even at a low screen brightness, doesn't exceed three hours, which makes notetaking for classes a little hard because it has to be plugged in all the time. Another annoyance is the weight...it's over 6lbs, and while this is ideal for sitting on a desk or on your lap, it's not at all practical for holding upright and drawing, which is a major bummer since that's why I purchased it. I've also had a few glitches that required me to reinstall everything, but that was by no means the fault of the laptop, it was problems with Windows...which I suppose is to be expected. It's Windows after all!
One bit that is both wonderful AND annoying is that there is a volume knob on the front of the laptop which makes adjusting the volume extremely easy and you don't have to go into the volume tab to change anything. What's annoying about this is, if you're wearing a bulky sweater or have the laptop sitting close to you, 7 times out of 10 you will accidentally turn the knob and play something unexpectedly loud at an embarrassing or inopportune moment.
But the one thing that really sold me on this machine? An SD card reader built right in the side of the laptop. I'm a photographer, so hooking up my camera (draining the camera's battery!) takes up a lot of what little time I have to transfer photos, and it's just so convenient to be able to pop the SD card out of your camera, stick it in your computer, and there's your pictures!
All in all, I would say that if you don't mind the extra weight, this is an ideal laptop for students, but not exactly perfect if you're looking for something strictly for drawing.
It's a Tablet PC for an economic budget + best brand........2006-04-19
Reviewer: Tariq Al-Hassomi "TOA" (Kingdom of Bahrain, Manama) - See all my reviews
Always Tablet PC's were expensive, i always wanted to own one, when the prices began from $1,500 - 2,500 in the old days, till my eyes catched this tablet, coming to the specs and the user reviews i would add also.
1) Toshiba a very long life brand reputation in electronics specially labtops.
2) The price is so economic, with greats hardware specs.
3) The functions of the tables are amazing, very elegant and very compact, a tablet with all needs, its a real smart results made.
4) The software included, as we know toshiba never leavs anything needed behind, all apps. included and other software can be found.
I also upgraded it the memory DDR from 512MB to 1GB which made speed fly high, i recommend not holding some bucks for upgrading to 1GB for smoothness performance.
Owning this tablet for who needs it is a good choice, its doing the job with a good price, i cant sleep without it at night.
;)

Great product.......2006-03-14
I read lots of reviews on Toshiba R15-S929 before I purchased it from Amazon, and not all of them are fair enough with this product.
The only drawback here is the fan, which is really a bit noisy. As for the weight, you should keep in mind that it is not a tablet pc, but a laptop that converts into a tablet pc. I think that some users do not know what to expect from the items they buy and they expect miracles.
My machine came with a memory stick of 512Mb, so I just bought another 1Mb to make it faster, but it was running perfect on 512Mb. Toshiba's manual really sucks, mainly because it has no instructions on how to use the pen. It took me a couple of days to realize how to enable the eraser, that is by pressing and holding the other end of the pen against the screen (the screen is really well built and strong, so you don't need to worry about resting your hand on it). Actually, the outer glass of the screen seems to be only a protection, while the real monitor is below, so you have no direct contact with it.
There is no bluetooth on this fellow, but I bought a plug-and-play pccard adapter and installed it to the external slot available on the Toshiba R15. I spent only 45 extra bucks and the installation was easy and now the bluetooth is up and running perfectly.
I am very happy to have a laptop that can be used in a tablet mode. The tablet features are great and very intuitive. You can use handwritting for e-mails and to take notes as you would on regular paper. The screen really feels almost like paper, so your handwritting is quite the same as it would be on a regular copybook.
Excellent, Great Value.......2006-03-10
I love this tablet pc. It's great to run a pc with the option of using the stylus pen or touchpad instead of a mouse. (...) I haven't used the cd/dvd burner yet, but, I'm glad it is included. This pc has everything I need. The only drawback for me was getting used to the 14" screen, which is great for watching movies, but, makes the laptop big and and a little heavier than I would like. A 12" screen would be perfect. Overall, TOSHIBA earned my 4 stars.
