Amazon.com Product Description

Maximize your mobile performance as well as your multimedia capabilities with the Toshiba Satellite M55-S139 notebook PC featuring a bright 14-inch TrueBrite screen and the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 with 128 MB of shared video RAM. It's ideal for both savvy professionals and students who want outstanding performance and advanced capabilities at an affordable price. It has a powerful 1.86 GHz Celeron M processor, an 100 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), dual-layer multiformat DVD drive that also burns CDs, integrated 54g wireless connectivity with support for Atheros SuperG technology, and Windows XP Home edition operating system.

<b>The Basics</b>
<ul>

  • Hard Drive: A welcome size for road warriors, the 100 GB Enhanced IDE hard drive is a bit above average in size for notebook PCs, and faster than average at 5400 RPM. It's also user removable, enabling you to upgrade its size at some point down the line.
  • Processor: The Intel Centrino Pentium M 750 processor is designed specifically for mobile computing, offering a balanced level of mobile-optimized processor technology, good mobile performance, and exceptional value. It features a Deep Sleep state, which helps enable longer battery life by minimizing the power consumption of the processor during brief periods of inactivity. The 1.86 GHz speed is in the upper-middle of the speed spectrum for this processor (as of autumn, 2005), and it also offers a fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (1 x 512 MB, PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a good start for power users, and it offers a very fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB). It has one service-accessible memory slot and one user-accessible slot.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 4x for both DVD+R/RW, 8x DVD-R, 2x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous). </ul> <b>Screen, Graphics and Sound</b>
The M55-S329 has a 14-inch TruBrite TFT screen with a widescreen 1280 x 768-pixel resolution. Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks and the capability to deliver SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound and SRS WOW stereo enhancement through the two built-in speakers.

    <b>Connectivity and Expansion Slots</b>
The M55-S329 has an integrated Atheros 802.11b/g wireless-LAN that supports Atheros SuperG technology, which uses packet-bursting, fast frames, on-the-fly data compression/decompression, and dual-channel bonding to enhance throughput to double that of 802.11g. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including Firewire: <ul>

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader, compatible with Secure Digital (SD), MultiMedia (MMC), Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, and XD Picture Card </ul> It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    <b>Preloaded System and Software</b>
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, McAfee AntiVirus, InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator, Sonic Solutions RecordNow.

    <b>Dimensions and Weight</b>
This notebook measures 13.5 in x 9.5 in x 1.5 (WxDxH) and weighs 5.1 pounds.

    <b>Power</b>
It's powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has a battery life of up to 2.5 hours (depending on usage). It has a 4-hour full charging time with the notebook off, and 12 hours with the computer active.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars love it!.......2007-05-05

I bought the Toshiba Satellite M55-S329 December 28, 2006 and I love it. I haven't had any problems with it and I even bought it refurbished! I didn't previously have a laptop but I had been looking for one and knew I wanted one. Then my husband got me a Sling Media Slingbox Pro for Christmas. So I did some research and found the Toshiba Satellite M55-S329 had some of the best reviews for the price. The Slingbox works great on the Toshiba so I can watch cable programs (even the HD channels) from my laptop. I took the Toshiba to Amsterdam with me in March and used it the entire time to keep in touch with family and friends and to send pictures during my trip. I also watched the Slingbox while we were in Amsterdam. I was so glad to have the Toshiba and the Slingbox because the only channels our hotel had were Dutch speaking or the BBC CNN channel and there is only so much of that you can watch. It's a great travel laptop being just over 5 pounds! I have several family members that also have Toshiba laptops (a variety of models) and we all love them. I would highly recommend this laptop, the refurbished price was great for $699.99 with another $29.99 shipping and handling (UPS). I got mine from Express Solutions and I got it very quickly even with the holiday (New Years) in there.

    5 out of 5 stars Great computer.......2007-01-31

I bought this computer for my wife, who owned an older model Satellite. I thought she would be the only one to use it, but it has become the favorite computer in our apartment (for some reason we have 3... don't ask why). It's plenty fast, and the stereo speakers are excellent for computer speakers.

4 out of 5 stars Desktop Replacement That Travels Well.......2006-02-09

I grudgingly got a Satellite after my Inspiron burned out, and I didn't expect to warm to it as quickly as I did. It's faster, brighter, lighter, and much more versatile, particularly in multimedia. Keyboard, screen, and other basic components are solid.

I agree that the case latch and touchpad buttons are the "odd man out" on an otherwise solid construction. Other negatives: the power supply gives off a soft but definite high-pitched whine once the battery is fully charged. Also, the built-in WiFi isn't as dependable as the Dell I was using: I'm hitting "repair" more than I used to, which is a pain.

I'll leave it to others to assess specific component specs, but the total package is very smart. The side vent for heat, the speaker placement and volume control all speak to the thoughtfulness of the design. And the wide screen is great for those who work with two or three documents side-by-side, not to mention DVD viewing.

Just a little lighter and thinner -- it just barely fits a Manhattan Portage case, and it won't fit a Timbuk2 -- and a little more quality control on throwaways like the latch and the power supply, and this would be a 5-star item. But to get those today you'd have to double the price. After a few months, very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Very solid dependable notebook.......2006-01-05

Toshiba Satellite M55-S329 (bought at Best Buy)

I have had this machine for awhile and these are my impressions so far. I use it for running MS Access, ASP.NET, SQL server and TSQL development. I am also learning Macromedia Studio 8. All these programs run as well as on a desktop.
This notebook feels very well built. None of the components feel cheap.

    PROS:

    1) Large amount of RAM (512 meg),
    2) lots of storage. 100g hard drive.
    3) Screen is bright and clear. Glassy appearance on the screen makes the colors pop.
    4) Free Microsoft OneNote software. Very useful program ( would not pay for it, but great as a freebie).
    5) Built in Wi-Fi.
    6) Multi-format memory card reader

There are a lot of subtle things about this machine that make it even better.

    1) Cooling fan is placed on the side instead of the bottom. Keeps the notebook cooler when placed on an insulated surface
    2) Smooth action on the keys. Nice clicking motion.
    3) The USB (2.0) ports are oriented horizontally. Makes an easier fit for USB plugs with wider shoulders.
    4) Rubber seal around the AC plug keeps the plug securely seated.
    5) Easy access to the battery for swapping out.

    CONS:

    1) Lid does not always close securely.
    2) Microsoft XP home instead of XP pro

The M55-S3293 has 1 gig of ram and might be a better choice for people with very demanding applications, also has a wide aspect screen.

Overall I am very pleased with this notebook.
