Amazon.com Product Description

Easily mobile at just 6.2 pounds, the Toshiba Satellite M45-S169 makes it easy to get your work done with a large, bright 15.4-inch screen (which is also great for watching DVD movies when you need a break). This affordable notebook PC also features a battery-sipping 1.6 GHz Celeron M processor, an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), dual-layer multiformat DVD drive that also burns CDs, integrated 54g wireless connectivity with support for Atheros SuperG technology, ATI Radeon XPress 200M video card with 128 MB of shared video RAM, and Windows XP Home edition operating system.

The Basics

• Hard Drive: A welcome size for road warriors, the 80 GB Enhanced IDE hard drive is a bit above average in size for notebook PCs, and faster than average at 5400 RPM. It's also user removable, enabling you to upgrade its size at some point down the line.
• Processor: The Intel Celeron M Processor 380 is designed specifically for mobile computing, offering a balanced level of mobile-optimized processor technology, good mobile performance, and exceptional value. The 1.6 GHz speed resides at the very top of the spectrum for this processor (as of October 2005). It also features a 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and large 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
• Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (1 x 512 MB, PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a good start for power users, and it offers a very fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB). It has one service-accessible memory slot and one user-accessible slot.
• CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 4x for both DVD+R/RW, 8x DVD-R, 2x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
• Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The M45-S169 has a 15.4-inch XGA display w with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It delivers up to 128 MB of video RAM shared with the system RAM. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks and the capability to deliver SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound and SRS WOW stereo enhancement through the two built-in speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The M45-S169 has an integrated Atheros 802.11b/g wireless-LAN that supports Atheros SuperG technology, which uses packet-bursting, fast frames, on-the-fly data compression/decompression, and dual-channel bonding to enhance throughput to double that of 802.11g. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including Firewire:

• 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
• 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
• 1 VGA monitor port
• 1 S-Video out
• 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
• 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, McAfee AntiVirus, InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator, Sonic Solutions RecordNow.

Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 14.17 x 10.6 x 1.45 (WxDxH) and weighs 6.2 pounds.

Power
It's powered by a 4-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has a battery life of up to 1.5 hours (depending on usage). It has a 4-hour full charging time with the notebook off, and 12 hours with the computer active.

What's in the Box
This package contains the M45-S169 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good laptop.......2007-04-16

Well, I read some 1-star reviews about this laptop and thought I should post somethign different. Quick note: on the back mine says M45 S169 but I have found out the hard way I have DDR ram -- not DDR2 (read more below).

I've owned this laptop for more than a year, and it was used before that, so all in all it is just about approaching the 2 year mark.

So far no problems. I've been lugging it around in a padded backpack, and it is my main working computer (I do all kinds of remote/onsite IT work). The screen has no lines or deformities, the paint on the laptop is not rubbed off anywhere that I can see, although it should be noted that I use an external keyboard sometimes (at most half the time) and almost always a USB mouse (cant stand touchpads). The HDD, CPU, wifi, Ethernet are all still plugging away (I have to clean up -- 5GB left!) the USBs still work like champs (all 3 of them), the video out is great which brings me to maybe the only con: I am used to putting a *lot* of load (20-30 apps daily, dual monitor setup, 2-3 vpns etc) on this guy and it struggles now and then. I'm sure the aging windows XP install is no help.

Well, thats not really a con, but just recently I went to upgrade the stock 512 RAM to a 1024mb stick (there is supposedly a non-user servicable second slot for 2GB max, but how am I supposed to get to it short of butchering the laptop for an hour and a half?!?!) and realised that the DDR2 (as per the specs on this page and others) stick does not fit. The notch is off by about 2mm, and will not work even if you clip off the notch to make it fit -- don't ask me how I know :D

But all in all, a great laptop, and haven't really had any more difficulties with it than I would have with a medium-grade truck hauling the space shuttle behind it.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!.......2007-03-09

It should be noted that I have an M45-331, but I could not find a page for that exact model. However, my experience with this laptop was SO ABYSMAL that I feel that I am morally obligated to forewarn consumers considering buying a Toshiba laptop, nevertheless an M45.

In just under two years, I have experienced the following issues:

- The chrome paint on the casing fades where my hands rested
- The left touchpad button's paint came off as well
- The screen developed a yellowish shade on the bottom in the center
- The USB ports broke (both physically and when repaired they simply stopped functioning as well! Poor craftsmanship all-around)
- The keys occaisionally popped off (fixable but annoying)
- The disc drive stopped working... twice.
- The motherboard had to be replaced
- Occaisonally when I plugged in the power cord, the laptop froze completely
- Lots of whimsical freezing in general, actually
- The final nail in this coffin was the hard drive inexplicably ceasing to work just today.

I was floored when I was told that lap tops are actually DESIGNED to last a measly two years... this one barely made it to that, and there were tons of problems on the way! I will never buy a Toshiba product again, and I don't advise anyone to buy a lap top with the brand attached to it! Lemons like this should NOT be forgiven.

1 out of 5 stars Run while you can dont by this notebook PC.......2007-03-07

Please whoever reads this please never buy any of toshibas notebooks they are junk. Let me first say I agree fully with the first comment I have had my Toshiba notebook the same model for less than a year and it crashes all the time. I let Toshba know all about the problem and sent it to their repair shop. I just got a call today and they said the Tech does not know how to fix the hardware because it keeps shutting off on him. I told her he better find a way thats what it did to me all the time. I at this point will never buy anything from Toshiba every again. I have had so many problems with this laptop. Keep in mind you have been warned also Toshiba has a lawsuit against them for thier M35 laptops people say they crash and freeze all the time sound familar. Trust me you would be better off with the empty box the notebook came in.

1 out of 5 stars TWO MONTH WONDER.......2007-01-21

I have had my Toshiba laptop for only 2 months before it died. I took it to an authorized dealer, and they had to replace the MOTHERBOARD and Hard drive. It has been 1 week since it's been repaired, and it keeps on shutting off. I called the Toshiba tech support and they said I had to take it back for repair. They will repair it for "free." I don't know about you but somehow this doesn't seem like a good deal considering 1) I have to drive 30 mins out of my way to take it there 2) it took ONE WHOLE WEEK, I do all my business on the darn thing, that is a long time considering 3) I had to pay money to have the repair company "expediate" to fix it, otherwise, it may have been 2 weeks out 4) I spent hours tweaking and putting back information that was lost, etc. - does Toshiba pay me back for my billable hours?

I think that if they know there is a problem with the cooling system where there is more than a handful of people, they should replace the whole computer and not just parts. Do lemon laws apply to computers?

5 out of 5 stars amazing performance for the price.......2006-06-10

after reading some of the other reviews I was a bit hesitant, but then realized the only real complaint was about the battery charge time, which has been stated in every spec list I've read. Outside of that it is an amazing buy and I am very pleased.
