Singing Maxtor.......2007-02-27
I have had this drive for over a year and I have recently experienced some of the problems that others mention here. I am not sure but my problems appeared to be overheating. If you place anything on the drive or put it someplace it can not breath it will overheat and eventually start making noise. Sometimes it will not show directories or files when it is hot. So far if you disconnect it and let it cool down it appears to get its senses back. It also has a problem with USB it will work on some ports and not on others especially with a Dell 8400. I would not recommend that you buy it but it does work to some degree if you are careful. This is a standard IDE drive so it might be possible to pull it from the housing and install in a computer. The heating problem is because it is a 7200 spin drive with no way to vent properly. In a computer case it would be fine. One could just pop a 5400 spin drive in its place to not waste the housing. It would be better than ditching the drive. I bought a SimpleShare to replace it recently and do not intend to use this drive unless it is fully backed up.
DO NOT BUY THIS!!!.......2007-02-18
Same as everyone here, my unit died within a year. Lost 50 gig worth of photos, info, and music. This unit is a complete pile of junk and will die on you. You just better hope you have your backup backed up if you go with this unit. JUNK!
Second Maxtor Drive that I've had crash.......2007-01-16
PLEASE AVOID!
This is the second Maxtor drive that I've had crash in less than a year. I will never buy another Maxtor. Customer service was useless, too.
It ain't that bad........2006-11-01
I've had mine for half a year now, with no problems. I use it to store music, videos, and other docs. Works pretty good for me. :)
Maxtor 3100 Sucks! Do NOT BUY!!!.......2006-08-16
I am in the same boat and was online searching for a remedy when I came across these reviews. UGH! I just had the same frickin' thing happen. My husband reported while I was away on a business trip that my Maxtor 3100 started making strange noises and he ultimately disconnected it until I returned. Behold, suddenly the XP OS does not recognize it, the 3100 diagnostic tool you download from the web is useless: it doesn't recognize it either: and now I'm calling GEEK SQUAD since I purchased it just months ago from BEST BUY (and yikes! A 3 month warranty?) now it will cost me a minimum of $250 to see if I can recover my data: not likely. This thing was about $100 US and now I face a major delimma: their website and support is as useless as the product. DO NOT BUY! CAVEAT EMPTOR!
