Huge Screen! Great Picture!.......2007-05-10
I do web and graphic design as a hobby and I got to a point where I felt I could benefit from a big screen monitor, boy was I right! I love the size of the screen, I can have multiple programs/documents open at the same time and I can see them side by side. If I am building a long web page or want to view a full Word page I can by rotating the screen to portrait mode. Sometimes I do feel the brightness might be too much, but then again, when I work away from it I can't wait to go back to it because of the brightness. It has several USB slots which adds great functionality especially if your pc has limited USB ports or if you just want some things sitting on your desk (like my iPod - no fumbling with the PC tower on the floor) and it has several slots for different memory cards (which are great when I want to transfer images from my digital camera all I have to do is pop the SD card into the monitor).
great, versatile, clear monitor.......2007-04-29
I've had this monitor for over a year now. It's proven to be extremely good value. I run it with a Mac, usually with the DVI connection at 1920x1200 resolution.
The inclusion of D-SUB, S-video, composite and component inputs and PIP makes it extremely convenient to hook up a second maching to it, use it for television and/or accommodate various video card configurations. I often use the USB connections and the memory card reader (built in to the side of the display housing). Everything works perfectly.
The size is great. Sure, I'd like a 30" Apple Cinema display, but the value of the 24" Dell (just under $800 when I bought it) is hard to beat. The picture itself is very clear, sharp, has rich colors and is flicker-free. I use it for photo retouching as well as general computing (surfing, e-mail, online videos, etc.).
sweet..........2007-01-18

Fantastic Widescreen Monitor.......2006-12-12
Having previously owned a Sony 24" CRT, I have been a bit spoiled by expansive computer desktop space. After that monitor was stolen from a parked vehicle in NYC, there was a void in gadget arsenal. Hence, I decided to keep my eye on developments in the large LCD marketplace so I could purchase a 24" LCD when the price dipped below $1000. Then, in mid-2006, I acquired a Dell 2405FPW and have been very happy with its picture quality and feature set since.
Much of the work I do directly benefits from the 1920 x 1200 resolution, so I considered the purchase of the 2405FPW a productivity investment. After eight months of heavy use, I can say that it has been a worthwhile investment as the large screen does facilitate my core work activities. As I create large financial models in Excel, there is never enough Windows desktop space. At the time of purchase, I used my Sony Vaio's 16" LCD (1600 x 1200) screen, which was already quite spacious. Yet, every little bit of space helps. The 24" screen and additional 384,000 pixels have paid for themselves.
Being a bit partial to Sony equipment, I was concerned that the Dell picture quality wouldn't compare to my user experience. My concerns were unfounded as the picture quality of the 2405FPW is excellent. Whether I am working on an Office document or watching live video, the picture is always crisp and devoid of artifacts.
One of the nice features of the monitor is the range of inputs: VGA, composite, DVI, component (HDTV), and S-Video. Unfortunately, however, there is no HDMI. If there is one clear problem with this monitor, it would be the lack of an HDMI input, which is fast becoming the standard for HDTV video.
Any pair of the available inputs can mixed to create a picture-in-picture. So, while working on your latest revenue forecast, you can simultaneously watch CNBC in the upper right hand corner. The only glitch with the PIP is that the pictures are overlapped. So, if you maximize your document on the main screen, it will be occluded by the secondary video input. This merely requires the user to resize windows as necessary.
My previous experiences with certain Dell products have been not been positive. Specifically, the build quality of their midrange business notebooks has been poor. Fortunately, Dell put significant resources into the design and fabrication of this monitor. Not only does it have a very stable base, but the solidness of the housing is clearly evident. The semicircular pedestal allows for maximum utilization of desk space while providing a sense of airiness to your work environment. And, if you like reviewing documents in portrait mode, you can rotate the entire screen ninety degrees. This is great for focused reading of PDF documents.
Several months after purchasing this monitor, I delved into the world of flight simulation and purchased Microsoft FS X. Again, the picture quality is excellent when running FS X - especially at 1920 x 1200. The added width really enhances the realism factor. After many hours of use, I have noticed no problems with the updating or other graphical anomalies that are sometimes discussed in the gaming world.
Whether using this monitor for business applications, gaming or video entertainment, it will never cease to impress. The picture quality and usability are excellent. If you have the financial resources and need extra screen space, consider the Dell 2405FPW a wise investment.

NOT GREAT FOR CRITICAL USE.......2006-11-16
I am now on my second 2405FPW monitor, and it looks like it is going back as well. The first one I thought was defective, but after looking at the second one and others out in the field, it appears that my issues are prettty much a result of the design. My primary use for this is graphics, animation, and photo editing. Though I don't expect perfect color yet from a LCD monitor (I use CRTs for critical color work), it should be better than this.
When I set the background for a dark neutral gray as required in color work, the left side of the screen is up to 1.5 f/stops hotter than the right side (that would be around 3 times brighter). This seems to be most evident in the dark and medium gray tonal ranges and is evident in photographs as well. I have noticed that the dark tonal ranges also seem to be crushed in general, whereas the brighter tonal ranges are extremely bright. Unfortunately, there are no bias, gain, or gamma controls to deal with this.
I should state that I am using a dual monitor setup with an nVidia graphics card, and I have only successfully run the monitor at its native resolution in VGA (analog) mode. In digital mode I cannot get full resolution without getting a new driver, and I am not willing to loose functionality in some of my programs (like AVID) by doing a general driver update, or spend days trying to find mutually compatible drivers. It does seem from observing others using this monitor that the left side brightness is somewhat improved in digital mode, though not eliminated.
Also worth mentioning: the maximum refresh rate is 60 hz. In VGA input mode on a dark gray background, I can see subtle waves of tonality washing through the background at the edge of perception. Can be a bit annoying under the right circumstances. This might be an issue with the analog input.
On a positive note, the general design of the monitor is beautiful and extremely functional. One of the nicest designs I have seen. Just wish the screen control was better. Guess I will be spending a lot more to get those features.
P.S. You can get 3 of these monitors new for what Amazon is charging for one.
