Amazon.com Product Description
In the search for one device to do it all -- phone, email, web, contacts, documents, music, video -- look no further than the Nokia 9300. This latest addition to Nokia's vaunted Communicator line of handsets is thinner, lighter and more useful than ever, and a unique folding design adds infinite flexibility. Add that to the much-loved Symbian Series 80 operating system and you've got a winning powerhouse in your pocket.
Design
At first, the 9300 looks like a typical Nokia candybar form-factor phone with a 128 x 128 screen and the typical dial-pad and navigation button. Flip the cover, though, and you're presented with a gorgeous 640 x 200 widescreen display and a full QWERTY keyboard. Both displays support 65,000 colors. A row of shortcut buttons arrayed above the keyboard makes it easy to quickly navigate to the device's phone, messaging, web, contacts, documents, and calendar functions. A small thumb-stick allows you to navigate through the 9300's menu system. And when you're browsing the web and using other applications it functions as a mouse pointer. A hot-swappable MMC memory card slot is provided, as is the Nokia "Pop-Port" interface for connecting wired headsets and the included desktop charging/synchronization cradle. The device ships with 80 MB of internal memory.
Calling Features
The 9300's address book is only limited by the amount of available memory, and it can store multiple phone numbers, as well as physical and email addresses. Meanwhile, the 9300's built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are included, and you can use your favorite music or recorded voices as ringtones. Meanwhile, more ringtones can be downloaded from Cingular's MEdia wireless web service. Picture IDs let you assign specific ringtones to particular callers. Plus, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible.
Messaging, Internet and Tools
With support for the MMS (multimedia messaging service), the 9300 can send picture, video and text messages (Cingular messaging charges apply). Instant messaging is also supported, and the phone ships with a built-in email client that supports POP3 and IMAP protocols, as well as Microsoft Office-based email attachments.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the 9300. It supports the GPRS data protocol, as well as the new, high-speed EDGE wireless data service. When used with a Cingular Wireless Internet Express data plan and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. There's also a built-in web browser for MEdia downloads and mobile web browsing. Cingular's MEdia service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
The 9300 supports PC synchronization standards via USB or Bluetooth, which means you can manage and synchronize contacts, calendars and other data with your PC. Nokia's PC Suite application makes this process a breeze. A number of handy software tools are bundled with the 9300 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, and an alarm clock. Productivity tools bundled with the 9300 include a word processor, a presentation viewer/editor, and a spreadsheet viewer/editor. These applications are compatible with the most common features of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (MS Office 97 or later). Robust contact and calendar applications are also included.
Messaging, Internet and Tools
The phone supports playback of MP3, RealAudio and AAC audio files so you can use it as a mobile music player. Picture effects and custom screensavers, as well as backgrounds and themes, can be set up to fit your personality. And don't forget that the 9300 is a powerful gaming companion with support for Java and Symbian games. Many games are downloadable via the Cingular MEdia service.
Vital Statistics
The Nokia 9300 weighs 5.89 ounces and measures 5.20 x 2.01 x 0.83 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4 hours of digital talk time, and up to 200 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

This phone rocks!.......2007-03-11
I have no idea about manufacturing problems, this is a well made phone and a very elegant one at that! The sound quality still amazes my friends after a year's use. If you don't want to damage it, buy a cover for heaven's sake! Open it up and experience the use of a full size keyboard that feels like the real deal! This phone is a real pleasure to use...
lots of manufacturing defects, but good phone if you are lucky.......2006-11-09
I am posting this because I have yet to see a review reporting the problems that I had with this phone.
I consider myself a computer geek. Having said that I have no problems configuring anything to work on my imac. I chose this phone, because of Amazon's great discount and because even though Nokia doesn't officially support mac connectivity with this phone, it is a breeze to install and sync. After I had time to set up the phone it took me about 20 mins to get all my contact from my mac to this phone via bluetooth, along with my calendar info.
The screen is superb and internet navigation is amazing for sites that are light on images or are geared toward a mobile phone.
The only complains are really the ones mentioned in the other reviews:
- no vibrator mode
- no lighted keyboard
Why one star? well, after one week, ONE week, the phone started to act strangely. It restarted automatically in the middle of web surfing. Then the restarts started to be more often. After a while the battery meter started to act strangely too, it said the phone had 4 or 5 bars left, and then the phone would switch off. If I charged the phone then it would start normally.
Then one day, it just wouldn't start at all.
Assuming I had a crappy unit in a sea of good ones I applied for an exchange. However, after 4 days of usage... exactly the same problems: erratic behavior, random restarts and random switch offs. Apparently if you google nokia 9300 problems, the random restarts are quite common, however my phone doesn't turn on any more.
I have had two nokia models so far, and the first one (a 6100) didn't give me any problems. It is a shame these phones are poorly manufactured. Maybe you will be more fortunate and don't have these problems. But don't say you weren't warned...
KBR Contracter (IIraq).......2006-10-25
I have never giving anything a review up tell now, but I had to say something about this phone. The times that I came home people use too ask me--were did I get that phone from, because you could not get it in the states, and everyone wanted one. In the years that I have been in Iraq--this has got too be the best phone that I have own and use, and belive me I have had some. I like the 9300 best out of all of them. I now own the 9500 I have hae this one for about four months or so and I love it even more. I do not know if you can get a much better unlock phone then the 9300. I have not owen the 9500 that long, but up tell right now I like it better then the 9300. If you are in the air as much as I am then you should give this 9300 a go... I thank that you will love it. I still have the 9300, but am now useing the 9500 (for pitcures)and I hope too have it for some time.
Leroy,
Save Your Money.......2006-09-04
While the phone itself performs well, the blackberry sync to other internet accounts does not. I have had three phones with the same problem.
Technical information disappears, mandating the re installing of data to synchronize with other accounts.
Cingular personnel are not trained to deal with these problems.
If I were being paid for all the time I've spent with technical support, cingular would be paying me for my time.
The phone is also not capable of downloading sophisticated web browser pages.
I am sorry I ever got started with this phone. Three phones with the same problem is not a coincidence.
Love at first sight, disaster after 5 months.......2006-08-30
My original review was overly optimistic.
5 months later, the software glitches are not glitches but full fledge OS disaster: clock would stop advancing for 10-12 hours - just in time for morning alarms to pass by; bluetooth would start itself as it sees fit - and drain battery faster; "contacts" application crashes almost every time batter is low in power (?!?!?!); every once in a while, phone freezes when you have an incoming call such that you must remove battery, reset it, and then try to call the person you just missed the call from; it can take up to 20 minutes for it to boot up once it gets into crashing mood; and still, it has zero-scratch resistance (it got fully scratched just being in my purse with my keys - no dropping, sitting, jumping on it or anything radical as that).
I am really disappointed in this Nokia's product. I am currently waiting for replacement from Cingular, but I am afraid that I will end up with the same type of phone which works fine for month or two, and then starts dying out fast.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I was looking for replacement for my Nokia 6820. This phone was an option from the day one but I waited to get it when the price fell on "free".
First, so far I really like most of the phone features. Especially in keyboard mode, phone is very flexible, allows many customizations, GPRS and browsing internet works very well (you can check gmail, open regular cnn page, etc.), you can add photos and ringtones per contact list, you can group contats in groups, you can set up different alarms in different time zones and for different days (eg. wake up at 8am every Monday and Tuesady, 7:30 rest of the week, and 9am on weekends, EST), additionally, phone has "offline" feature which would allow you to use it in the airplane (although I would not suggest it at this moment).
I was able to install google maps software on it, write short presentation and word document. Also, phone memory is updagradeable (it comes with 80MB I think).
It is the best phone I ever had.
But now list of annoyances:
- it does not have vibrate mode so when the phone is silent it is really silent.
- it is really long and it is hard to find case/bag for it. It feels more like small size brick than a phone. I strongly suggest getting wireless headset with this phone.
- it is heavy.
- the plastic cover has zero impact resistance. Within 2 days of getting the phone, the was scratched by keys in my bag. My Nokia 6820 was in the same bag for 2 years and no scratches at all!
Also, I accidently dropped the phone yesterday on asphalt and it has even more scratches on the cover. Again, my Nokia 6820 ended up in puddles and was stepped on, and still looks pretty good in comparison to
- the "phone" settings (when the phone is closed) are limited. In order to set alarm, you must openen the phone.
Still, if you are looking for something which is almost PDA and if you look for something which will allow you not to take laptop for long weekend vacation, but you will still need to be online and check your email - this is great phone. I heard that 9300i has wireless network card as well, but I was pretty happy with GPRS capabilities of this phone.
Overall, if you do not mind size and weight (which are "large" and "heavy" respectively) this is probably the greatest phone you can get :)
