A smart, high-resolution multifunction machine, ideal for the home or small office, the Lexmark X85 is a capable printer, scanner, and standalone copier. In a smart black-and-silver livery, it looks like a desktop photocopier, and can easily perform this function in both black and white and color. To make copies, there's no need to connect the machine to a computer, as the two-line LCD and panel of 15 buttons provide all the control you need.
Indeed, one can do a lot from the control panel, including checking ink levels, enlarging up to poster size, and adjusting the machine's settings. The LCD is not easy to read and has no backlight, however, so you'll need a good room light source.
Paper feeds from a bin at the back of the machine through to an output tray that slides out from the front. Place your original on the glass covering the X85's flatbed scanning engine. There's no multisheet feeder, so you'll have to copy page by page, but copy times are quite reasonable, even in color.
In our tests, print quality was generally very good, with precise, dense black text and well-reproduced colours. There are two photo print modes, photo and max photo, but for most purposes the much quicker photo mode will be sufficient. There was little obvious difference in the printed output, although dithered sections of fine tone were marginally improved. Print times varied between good, for straight text prints (a five-page text document finished in just over 1.25 minutes) and extremely sluggish (a 3-by-5-inch photo in max photo mode, which took just under 8 minutes).
Despite the low-contrast LCD and slow photo printing time, the X85 is a good general-purpose multifunction device, offering strong software support, and is ideal when space is at a premium. --Simon Williams

Does the X85 print photo quality?
Yes, the X85 offers high resolution. Up to 4800 x 1200 dpi on photo paper for photo quality images, and up to 2400 x 1200 dpi on all paper types.
How do I copy?
You can use your X85 to copy in both black and white or color without having to turn on your PC. Just place the document you want copied on the scanner. Close the lid, then hit the Color Copy or Black Copy. That's all there is to it!
What is 48-bit scanning?
Simply put, more bits means more detail. 48 bit scanning means bringing out all the full, rich detail in the photos you scan or copy for friends and family.
What is a flatbed scanner?
Flatbed scanner has a hinged lid under which you can scan photographs, single sheets of paper or 3D objects such as magazines, books, etc. Another type of scanner is a sheet-fed scanner (see our X63 for this type of scanner), which can feed multiple pages of standard size paper, and is best for multiple page faxes, copies or scans. A sheet-fed scanner does not allow you to scan 3D objects.
