1 out of 5 stars Spanish Edition.......2007-06-04

I ordered this for my grandson's birthday and it came in time, but there was nothing in the description indicating it was printed in Spanish. We do not speak Spanish. I'm very disappointed in receiving the wrong product. If I had known it was in Spanish, I would not have ordered it. I will be returning it for a full refund.

I had ordered a english edition of Guiness Book of records but received a Spanish edition. I returned the book to Amazon for refund and used the the original packing.
I received a letter from USPS after 2 weeks saying the box was damaged and the book was lost.
I lost my money in this bargain.
It has been an unpleasant experince so far.

I assumed this book would be in English. But after receiving it, realized that it is in Spanish. It would be helpful in the future for this information to be stated with the initial description of the item. I didnt' think I would have to search the document to find out what language it was printed in.

I love this book because it has lots of pictures and a mind-boggling list of feats in ever imaginable category! It's a great book to just have lying around! No other records book comes close! This is a must have book!

4 out of 5 stars Most People Will Like This Book.......2006-06-15

I especially like the machinery and sports because it has a lot of information about breaking records. The only thing I don't like is there is only a little bit about each subject.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loved it!.......2006-03-22

My 10 year old daughter loved the book! She was amazed at all the facts and photos. Great gift for anyone!

4 out of 5 stars An essential reference tool........2006-03-14

Whilst some readers will always buy the latest edition of this book because they are interested in the largest, tallest, fastest or whatever, personally I have always found this book to be a first class reference source.

It was from the Guinness Book of records that I learned that the largest Turtle known to man was a giant Leatherback Turtle which (to my great surprise) was washed up on the shores of Ireland - and "not" some Caribbean country as one might expect.

Of course, not all the records are repeated from one edition into the next or each book would be identical except for any new records achieved during the past 12 months. For this reason, the reader might need to collect a few editions of the book in order to have as good a collection of records as possible.

Just a few loose thoughts really.

3 out of 5 stars Buy 2004.......2003-11-10

There is realy no point of buying this book because you can buy the 2004 edition which is three times better then this one.

4 out of 5 stars Setting the record straight..........2003-08-10

The 2003 edition of the Guiness Book of World Records is definitely one for the internet-surfing age. It has pieces of information is byte-sized and bright-coloured boxes -- one almost wants to click on the pages of the book. Unlike older versions of this book from days of yore, it is not a 'dictionary' of facts. This is printed on glossy, full-colour process paper and inks, full-colour and fascinating photographs on every page, both as highlighted items as well as background/'desktop' images.

Unique to this edition is an introduction that has 'the best of the best', records that are new and include everything from top-grossing animated films (which has, ironically, been surpassed since the printing), and what had to have been a last minute edit regarding Britain's Queen Mother, as the oldest royal.

There is a brief section up front on how to set your own record, as well as what it takes to document the setting or breaking of a record. Also included here is some criteria for what makes the cut in the print edition of the record book -- be warned, just as this is not the dictionary-variety edition of old, it is also not encyclopedic. It is a selection of records, but not the complete record. More records are kept on file, and plans are that different records are to be published each year; other records may be accessed online.

This book starts with the main section on Human Achievement -- this is a nod of honour and recognition to those who set records during the 9-11 disaster; not all records are happy ones (as in, greatest number of firefighters lost during a single incident). Human Achievement is a separate category from sports -- that comes at the end, and is greatly expanded in this edition (as those tend to be the most popular, and to a certain extent, the most record-prone endeavours).

Included here is the standard fare of buildings and architecture (tallest building, smallest church, etc.), natural world (highest mountain, deepest ocean chasm), entertainment, money, politics, etc. A new-ish section is on military issues -- this included weaponry and armaments, people and their actions, battles (longest, shortest), ships, planes, personnel and numbers statistics. Again, given the frequency of wars in the media, this section is here by 'popular' demand.

There is a useful index, should the basic categorisation fail. While I like the layout and design of this volume, and in particular the photographs and full-colour feel, I regret the loss of countless types of records. Who was the most miserly? Who has done the most sit-ups? Alas, you won't find those here -- of course, they are available online, for those who have such access.

All in all, it is a fun book to have -- this hard-back is more impressive to look at that its predecessors, in any event. And who isn't fascinated by at least one record?

4 out of 5 stars Changing in style but still good.......2003-06-05

i've been a regular Guinness reader. i bought my first book last 1990 (1990 edition) and been buying every edition since then. i disagree with the notion that the later editions were getting "bland" or "stale". maybe because everyone is expecting new fan-favorite records being broken in every edition which won't happen anytime soon (tallest human, heaviest man, etc.)... i like the way the editions are being arranged. it's actually keeping up with the modern way of presenting materials.

5 out of 5 stars Modernized and Entertaining.......2003-01-24

I've seen the comments about the "sad decline" and I do not agree. I found the hard cover book not only entertaining and well-structured, but it did something even more important: got my third grader to read it cover to cover.

I can see where there is a need for both this kind of entertaining "just the highlights" kind of book, and a second more detailed less illustrated book--that is for the publisher to decide. For myself, this version is modern, entertaining, and therefore it draws the reader in. Glad we bought it.

2 out of 5 stars I miss the old one.......2002-12-29

I grew up on the Guinness Book of World Records, and loved it. I'd devour each new edition, from cover to cover. I love facts and inane trivia, and the Guinness Book was made for people like me. The "Guinness World Records"- what these books have become- is not the same book. It is mostly pictures, and filled with obscure records like how many straws one can fit in a mouth. I am interested in records like the earliest dinosaur or the largest construction project- not records that are there only because someone wanted to have a record and fame, and have no other practical purpose. I give it two stars because some of these old records- the kind that really matter- are still present. But the new format of the book seems to be so filled with pictures that there is no room for many important records, and hence much is missing. What is present seemed to be editorialized, supporting the West in it's "war" on terrorism in many sections, showing only those aspects that support America and Britain, ignoring their faults or any mention of 9/11. Whether or not this is laudable, it is inappropriate in a completely factual text. There is now an entire section devoted to the military, as opposed to the military being a subsection of the human world in the 2001 and 1998 editions- back when the pictures were black and white and the book was full of records. Even since the 2001 edition (also pictoralized) the Table of Contents has become more cursory- you have to look in the Index to find any group of records beyond the broadest. Now, when I want to find a record, I go back to 1998, as I still have that copy. If I want to see pretty pictures and the occasional updated record, I'll look at this new edition.

If you were in elementary school the last time you saw The Guinness Book of World Records, the 1998 version might surprise you with its hardcover, high-gloss format; more than 350 color photographs; and a slick layout that's decidedly easy on the eyes. You'll still find the world's tallest man here, as well as the largest collection of refrigerator magnets--but there are also such decidedly '90s touches such as the longest online interview and most-visited Web site. The biggest change from the musty paperback of days gone by, however, is the emphasis placed on sports and entertainment records, from most expensive TV series renewal (Seinfeld) to biggest one-day box-office gross (The Lost World). Thirty-one "On the Record" interviews profile such record-breaking celebs as Madeleine Albright (the highest-ranking woman ever in the U.S. government) and Adrian Targett (who was genetically identified as a relative of the 9,000-year-old human remains known as "Cheddar Man").

One thing that hasn't changed is the sheer weirdness of the whole enterprise. Above all, The Guinness Book of World Records is an amiable portrait of human eccentricity, chronicling the great lengths to which some will people will go to become--if only for their allotted 15 minutes-- "famous." From the world's biggest burrito (4,456.3 pounds) to the record-breaking long- distance tap dance (23.219 miles), there's a record on file for every conceivable human achievement, pastime, or abnormality.

Searching for the name of the most tattooed woman, or in desperate need of knowing which NFL team has accomplished the highest number of consecutive wins? As always, the Guinness Book of World Records is the prime source of such top-ranked trivia, and this fancy edition for 2001 is no exception. With its large, hardcover format, bright colors, numerous photos, and quality print job, this book deserves a permanent home on your coffee table. Divided into color-coded sections such as crime, gadgets, spacecraft, weather, sports, and the ever-fascinating human body, you'll find everything from the bestselling hip-hop album (CrazySexyCool by TLC) to the rarest living creature (an Abingdon Island giant tortoise by the name of Lonesome George). Fun high-tech categories include most-visited Web sites (www.france98.com), fastest-selling PC game (Myst), and fastest-spreading worm (the dreaded "I love you"). Showcasing some of mankind's proudest achievements, the two pages devoted to robots present us the slightly absurd "most cocktails mixed by a robot," accomplished by Cynthia and Rastus from Cynthia's Cyberbar, along with many more-practical successes.

Young and ambitious readers will find one short section especially inspiring. At the back of the book, specific instructions tell you how to go about setting your own world record, including contact information, guidelines, and suggestions on how to prevail without becoming a world-class athlete or permanently altering your body. Following this helpful information is a list of some of the more unusual accomplishments that resulted in new records: marshmallow nose blow, heaviest ear lift, longest bubble, and fastest ketchup drinker are but a few. Whether you use this book to settle bar bets, entertain the family, or inspire yourself to dizzying heights of personal achievement, it's a sure hit for trivia buffs of all ages. --Jill Lightner

4 out of 5 stars My Review for the 2001 Guinness Book .......2005-02-16

This book is about cool stuff. It has weird stuff too. It has stuff like the biggest toy retailer. There is stuff like greatest meteor shower in the world. There are over 1000 extraordinary new records. This book is just one of them that they have. I think that this book is very good. So you can check this book out at your local library.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but a little graphic.......2004-09-02

This book was O.K. I liked most of it. It was also quite large, compared to some of the most recent ones. However it was in black and white. It was interesting, but if you have young kids then I would not suggest it. It does have a few disturbing pictures. Overall I would give it a 7/10. If you are wondering if I would recomend it, it would depend on your age. I also would not recomend it to people who get quesy very easily. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

Book Review
Guinness World Records
2000
by?????

The Guinness World Records 2000 is the book that holds all the records. The book is interesting in many ways. It is a wonderful book to search through and look up cool and amusing facts. My personal favorite record is these two people that can make their eye balls come out of their sockets. They can both pop them out about two and a half inches out of their heads.

In this book, you can find the strongest man, the greatest search engine, the smartest robot, and the biggest sports contract. It was 126 million dollars!!! There are 560 pages of records in this book! This is the 2000 edition. There are three newer books out.

I like this book. This book can be read by all kinds of readers. For example, the book is very easy to read, because there are little summaries and a picture with every story. This book by be a good read for everyone. There are world records about everything you can imagine. I enthusiastically recommend this book.

But the new format of the book seems to be so filled with pictures that there is no room for many important records, and hence much is missing. Small black and white pictures aren't as pretty, but they allow the reader to find what they are looking for. Now, when I want to find a record, I go back to 1998, as I still have that copy. If I want to see pretty pictures and the occasional updated record, I'll look at these newer editions.

This review refers to the 2001 edition.

5 out of 5 stars The 2002 World Records.......2002-12-10

Guiness Book of World Records was a excellent nonfiction book. The book was about people who made world records. The most interesting record was about a man who had the biggest feet of any living person his shoe size was 28 Another one was from a mother who gave birth to 7 babies on the same day.My favorite record was about LIZA LEFT EYE LOPEZ. Look in the book you if you want to know what I mean. I would recommend this book to anyone starting from ages 10 up30 because it's educational and besides I want to know what's going on in the world.

4 out of 5 stars This book remains an essential reference tool........2007-05-07

The best bit about taking delivery of the latest edition of "Guinness World Records" is the discovery of new information about the largest, tallest, fastest or whatever. As with every new edition of this book, many records from previous editions are removed in order to provide space for those which are included for the very first time. In other words, this is not an up-dated version of Guinness World Records 2006 to which a few more records have been added. This is a new book.

Every edition of Guinness World Records will always remain an excellent reference source - but you will need several editions to be certain of finding exactly what it is you require.

On the other hand, if you are simply curious about records, there are many in this particular edition that were never intended. Whilst it might be every Athlete's intention to break the world record in his or her particular discipline, it was never intended that a certain person would have an entry in this book because their's was the skull from which the largest ever object was removed. Gruesome? No, not at all. Fascinating? Yes, most definitely.

Book Description

Charles Wilber tells his personal story of learning to work with nature, and his philosophy and approach to gardening. He reveals for the first time how he grows record-breaking tomatoes and produce of every variety. There's no magic involved. Just a well thought out system that gives plants more than they could ever want, and makes it possible for them to reach their full potential. Wilber's compost is the cornerstone along with a wide circumference around plants layered with compost, alfalfa meal and mulch. Valuable pruning and watering details are given, too, as well as a new way of looking at seeds. As you will learn, growing awesome tomatoes integrates every aspect of gardening that you can imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Great organic gardening book.......2007-02-20

If you have ever thought of turning to organic gardening then this book will be very helpful. If you have been practicing organic gandening for years there are still some enlightning new theories for you here. If you believe you can get good produce to grow from a brick with the proper amount of chemical fertilizer and don't plan on changing your mind then this book is a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars grow the best tomatoes.......2006-11-10

This book gives you some new and different ideas on how to grow tomatoes.
I can't wait for spring to try it.

5 out of 5 stars Growing World Record Tomatoes.......2005-12-28

This book and the informative resources contained within its pages are invaluable to the garden tomato grower who wants more than just "average" tomatoes. I have already read each page several times over.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tomato Book!.......2002-12-02

Having had the past growing season to try out the techniques in this book, I highly recommend it. While I live in an area where I may never have crops like Charles Wilbur, with the techniques he demonstrates in his book, I more than doubled my tomato crop this past season! That right there made this book worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Grow More Tomatoes Than You Ever Thought Possible.......2001-12-28

I read this book cover-to-cover several times before preparing my 2001 garden. This system works. While I didn't get 30 foot tall plants like Mr. Wilber, I probably quadrupled my previous best results -- and that was only my first try. Everybody who saw my plants commented that they had never seen such healthy, productive specimens. (Wait until they see my plants next year!)

Even if you don't follow his instructions to the letter, you will likely get much better results than you ever had previously. While the compost and mulching are super-important, I think THE most important advice to follow is to build large, strong cages per the instructions. Your plants will be so big that they will literally crush any "normal" tomato cage you can buy at a nursery.

Organic gardening is the ONLY method that makes sense, when you really get into it. I'll go head-to-head with anybody who gardens using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. My plants will be bigger, healthier, with bigger yields of better-tasting produce.
