I am reading the book as part of a SixSigma Black Belt program, currently at page 327. Reading as I am for comprehension, I find that there is a information in just about every line of the book. Pyzdek demonstrates his experience in the field of improvement, as all dimensions are thoroughly addressed. As an experienced engineering manager, I do not see too many stones unturned.

Lacking Full Explanations.......2007-06-07

This book leaves me with more questions about finance than I have answers. Who do the authors think they are writing for? It surely is not the beginner MBA student. It seems like words are expensive because they do not fully or even partially explain concepts. Finance is difficult but it should not be impossible. I should not have to read and reread to figure out what the heck they are talking about. Maybe they should serve as advisors to this text and let someone who knows how to write actually write the book. These guys may be leaders and brillant but they are poor communicators. I'm not thrilled with my professor either. Is he a cheerleader or a teacher?

Good introductory finance book.......2007-04-11

This is an easy to ready comprehensive introduction to basic finance concepts. I would not recommend it to finance majors but I consider it a good choice for general MBA or other students that do not have a stong quantitative finance background.

Comprehensive text - you get your money's worth.......2007-01-09

I got this book for my Intro to Corp Finance class. The professor was aweful, but the book got me through the class. There are several other finance classes that use the same text, so for once I feel like I'll get my money's worth out of a textbook.

Good text, serious editing problems.......2007-01-05

I thought the text was well organized and well explained, but a lot of the problems in the book required concepts that the text didn't explore. On top of that, the CD that came with the text had some serious editing problems where information in problems in the text didn't match what was provided in the CD. The notes on the CD were laced in editing errors. The book was overall pretty good, but it is frustrating when you encounter problems where the concepts weren't really laid out in the chapters.

I have to agree with others that this book is a bit unwieldly. However, this book is considered a mainstay in most MBA finance programs and I've worked with many people that use it as a reference. I think the problem is that corporate finance is not an easy subject to teach and get across concisely. I have actually read many finance books on my own and found most of them unwieldly. Therefore I would still have to recommend this book if you are trying to learn corporate finance.

Addendums are an important reference item. The entire text was thought provoking and challenging. I'm glad that I chose to "bite the bullet" and spend the 'extra' money on the text which is not the case with all UoP courses. This time it paid off.

Kinda hard to understand and the information provided in the text is not presented very clearly. Maybe it is just me and I did not finish the whole book anyway. I had 6 edition of Corporate Finance when on my MBA program, which at that time was an excellent book. Now i wanted to refresh the knowledge and bought this one, and it was a good improvement over the one i had. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn or refresh corporate finance.

this is a great book but i'd rather they organize there diagrams better and in a more direct way. grouping them up in a non cohesive way is counter intuitive. Blocks of pages are just diagrams then in the reading I have to go back and find the page with in that block of diagram pages. Its detailed but just not organized in a good way.

Great Resource.......2007-06-25

If you read these books cover to cover and do the labs in the appendicies, they are a great resource towards your CCNA certification. I do however, recommend that you also suppliment your study materials with hardware,if available, and some additional pracice questions and tests.

The tests in the back of the book are nothing compared to the actual cert. And the netsim, what a joke. Not even worth loading onto your computer. I suggest another program to work on.

For your certs, I recommend you have a strong understanding of switching(STP, VTP, VLAN's, etc.), ACL's, and be able to subnet in your head. No ISDN on the test for me.

Good for study and reference material.......2007-06-21

I am studying for the CCNA exam. Per my CCNA instructor, it is going to take a lot more than studying these books to pass the exam. Real life experience of course comes first but extra studying and a firm understanding of IP subnetting is what is going to get you through the exam.

The instructor we had was quite excellent and very involved in the industry and has seen a lot of people take this exam. He has yet to meet one who passed by reading this material exclusively. He had suggested the best use of these books was to use them to prop the door open.

I would actually disagree on the last point. I haven't read these cover to cover (and I likely won't) but I have referenced them quite often while studying and they have helped me to understand many topics more clearly.

Besides, my old Macintosh props my door open for me.

But I do believe that these books are keepers, both before and after the test. My biggest gripe is that I am having problems installing the NetSim LE and I've heard the same experience from other students. So, I hope you don't pick up this item just for the network simulator.

Good Info. Boring Read. .......2007-05-28

There's a lot of good information in this book if you're into this sort of thing. I'm not. Reading these books is like getting a root canal from a monkey without any anesthesia. Keep in mind that I'm having to study this stuff against my will thanks to my employer. People that have a real interest will get a lot out of the books and will find it money well spent.

Excellent source for passing your CCNA exams.......2007-05-07

Studying for the CCNA exams i found out that this is the most complete
set of books one must have for preparing for the exams.Wendel Odom is excellent in teaching the objectives mentioned in the book.

Having this set of books and if you can afford some practice on real cisco
routers and switches you are done.

Finnaly i give this set of books 5/5 ping success rate !!!!!

Buy the Tenth Edition if you can.......2007-06-16

To date, I've had to resort to previous editions of the Graphic Standards for most of my information. And I find it odd that a book titled graphic standards does not illustrate what the graphic conventions are. But it LOOKS PRETTY!

As for the CD-Rom, it has to be installed on the computer to use it, and the license agreement allows it to be installed on only one computer.

Great to begin with.......2007-05-24

My advice would be to start with this book first, then move onto CCNA Cisco press. Todd Lammle wrote this book as if you where setting in a class and learning from an instructor, some of the basic information that you need to know for exam will be covered in his text that can be easily be pick up by using his book. The only problem with this book is that he doesn't cover everything on the exam; as stated by the other reviewer. Cisco press is going to give you everything you need; but with dry content. The Cisco press content is not that bad if you start off with Sybex.

There isn't much more I can say about this book than has already been said. I used Todd's guide to help me pass the CCNA in 2000 and am using him again to recertify. Just an excellent book. Period.

Behind the Times........2007-04-10

Five years ago, I took a course on the CCNA exam, and the Sybex book was the standard course material. The Cisco books at that time were overly wordy, dry, and difficult to learn from. This seems to be the major reason Sybex became the textbook of choice for Cisco material. I had good success with that book and passed the test on the first try with little complications.

Then, a few months ago, I decided to go back and tackle the new CCNA exam and get certified again. Naturally, I went back to Sybex and bought this book. After a month of study, I felt I had fully grasped all the concepts in the book and began taking practice tests in preparation for the 640-801 exam. I was disappointed to find that I was repeatedly failing the practice tests. I spent some time reviewing and slowly came to realize that there are a variety of topics you will face on the new CCNA exams that aren't favored enough in the Sybex book. Frustrated, I went and picked up the Cisco Press: Official Exam Certification Library, which consists of the "CCNA Intro" and "CCNA ICND" books. I thought at first that having two books for this material was overkill. After several weeks of reading through these books, I am startled at how much raw content is in these two books that is directly relevant to the test. Even more obvious is how basic the Sybex course material is in comparison.

My personal experience is this: Cisco seems to have toughened up their exams quite a bit since they switched to the new CCNA exam, and Sybex doesn't seem to have kept up with this. Considering Sybex has also tried to squeeze the entire CCNP course material into a single book, when Cisco has four separate books for the same material, I'm not surprised that the CCNA book feels compressed. In particular, the areas I'm finding the biggest gaps between the two are as follows:

Cat 2950 Switch configuration - This is kept to a minimum in the Sybex book and only the most basic commands are offered.

General Routing Troubleshooting - A big theme in the practice tests I have taken thus far is the ability to properly troubleshoot various router setups. While the Sybex book gives you all the basic show commands and gives a very straightforward configuration for each topic, it simply isn't enough. There should have been several chapters dedicated purely to troubleshooting. The Cisco material did not provide dedicated chapters to troubleshooting either, but they take much longer to explain the topics than Sybex did.

Various Miscellaneous Topics - There are a variety of commands, terms, and concepts that I never saw until I started taking practice tests and picked up the Cisco Press CCNA Flash Cards book.

In closing, I will say that I like the way Todd Lammle writes. He is very easy to understand and Chapter 3 of this book (which covers IP subnetting) is a very well written chapter. This book is by no means "bad". It just isn't enough to pass the exam on it's own. If you have yet to purchase any material for the CCNA, I strongly recommend you spend the extra ten dollars and pick up the Official Exam Certification Library from Cisco Press. While it may be a little more difficult to read, it will be worth it when you go to take your test.

Great read.......2007-03-15

This is a well written book about the Cisco standards for the CCNA exam. It even mentions some things that are good to know but would not be on the exam so the author outlines only what you need to know for the exam but also covers "good standards" that you can search for on your own. I particularly am glad of the routing protocols covered in this book, as my professor at college didn't cover them in as much detail as they have in this book. I have yet to take the exam but feel that after reading this a few times I am more comfortable to take the exam than I would have without it!

Amazon.com also shipped this out to me and had it at my door 2 days earlier than expected. Great service, great product!

Basic info only.......2007-01-13

This book is now (2007) hopelessly outdated as regards the CCNA exam. It is ok for learning about the basics of Cisco routing and switching, but several of the the things the author insists you don't need to know for the exam (especially subnet-zero) you need to know very thoroughly. The short shrift given to EIGRP and complete lack of info about NAT will serve you very ill on the exam. Check this book out of the library, don't spend money on it.
