Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I expected.......2007-06-11
Very good and sturdy atlas, although it wasn't quite what I expected. It doesn't give very much information reguarding "adventures" across america. I have since purchased the National Geographic Road Atlas- RV and Camping edition which actually has more National Park descriptions and useful information than the Adventure edition.
National Geographic Road Atlas - Adventure Edition.......2007-05-14
As to be expected, this atlas is great.
Well done again.
not that good except the name.......2007-05-01
it is from national geographic but does not mean it is better than others except it costs twice more. i think the one you bought at walmat is good as this one if you are looking the direction. the info about parks could be much more. the center sprial binding makes hard for reading continusly.
Maybe my hopes were too high. I'd give it an almost or a good idea without enough meat........2007-04-13
We bought this book for a cross country drive because the typical road trip books are filled with "kitchy Americana", something of little interest to my wife and I. I guess I hoped for a bit more with respect to the adventure aspect. It was basically a couple of really good magazine articles and an atlas. Don't get me wrong, what is there is very good. It's just not as much as I hoped there might be.
The book contains the following:
1) 100 single paragraph descriptions of Adventurous locations around the country categorized by region (east, central, mountain, and pacific) and then by type (hiking/backpacking, climbing, paddling, winter sports, biking, and birding).
2) 24 National Park descriptions, each consisting of a photo, a map, a series of factoids, and about three paragraphs.
3) A standard atlas published in 2004.

This is a great road atlas. I find it to be real informative on identifying high points on any road you which to travel. Most important it is accurate and you can trust the maps.

When National Geographic published its first Atlas of the World more than 35 years ago, the world was indeed a different place. In order to cover today's world--including its oceans, stars, climate, natural resources, and more--National Geographic has published its seventh edition of the Atlas of the World. With each new edition, National Geographic strives to make its atlas more than just maps. You'll learn that the coldest place in the world is the Plateau Station in Antarctica, where the average daily temperature is minus 56.7 degrees Celsius; the most populated continent is Asia, with more than 3.6 billion people, or 60.8 percent of the world's population; the driest place on earth is the Atacama Desert in Chile; a flight from New Delhi to Rio de Janeiro covers 14,080 kilometers; life expectancy in the Republic of Zambia is 37 years; and the literacy rate in Turkmenistan is 98 percent.
Flip through the pages of this impressive book and you will feel as though the world is literally at your fingertips. Full-page spreads are devoted to more than 75 political and physical maps (political maps show borders; physical maps show mountains, water, valleys, and vegetation). There are many new touches to be found in this edition, including increased usage of satellite images, an especially helpful feature when researching the most remote regions of the earth; more than 50 updated political maps that record the impact of wars, revolutions, treaties, elections, and other events; and the use of the latest research on topics such as tectonics, oceanography, climate, and natural resources. The sheer size of the atlas's index--134 pages--offers insight into just how much information is packed into 260-plus pages. The book is so physically large, in fact, that when it's open, the reader is staring at three square feet of information, a surface area larger than many television screens. The potential uses of this book for a family are vast, from settling a friendly argument to completing a school report. In the end, though, the atlas is still mostly about maps. Pages and pages of maps. Maps that force us to see how wonderful and dynamic our world is. Maps that remind us of where we've been and where we'd still like to go. --John Russell
Book Description
You are looking at the authoritative edition of the atlas that has set the world's standard for more than a generation. Based on latest satellite technology and state-of-the-art digital data, this edition has new features, new graphics, and a new format. It is a treasury of definitive maps and informative entries on every country on Earth. In addition, "Worlds Beyond" presents a stunning portrait of our solar system and the universe.

Atlas of the World by National Geographic.......2005-12-01
This is a wonderful full-color book on the geography of the world.
The atlas has the following features:
- a map relief for all the major mountains
- green fonts for forestry
- highlighted waterways
- the ocean major currents
- bays highlighted
- the Isles of the Pacific i.e. Palau, Manihi, Lialtuka, Hiya Oa,
Santa Cruz, Kosrae
The North and South Pole is highlighted together with the
East and West Antartica and separate reliefs for the oceans.
The coloring is spectacular. This book would be perfect for the
student in your house.
National Geographic has made changes.......2005-06-16
In December 2004, National Geographic (NG) updated the Persian Gulf plate (Plate 75) to accomodate the controversies surrounding the place-names used in the 8th edition.
Here is my understanding of the changes made:
1. The term "Arabian Gulf" in parenthesis has been deleted. Instead, there is a small note that reads: "Historically and commonly known as the Persian Gulf, this body of water is also referred by some as the Arabian Gulf."
2. Persian names of all Iranian islands are used. (Kish instead of Qeys, Lavan alone instead of adding Sheykh Sha'eyb in parenthesis)
3. Deletion of "Occupied by Iran (Claimed by U.A.E.)" in reference to the islands Abu Musa, and Greater and Lesser Tunbs.
These changes already appear on the website (www.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine) and will apply to further printings or editions of the NG Atlas. Also, on the password-protected website for NG Atlas owners, there is a "brief summary of the historical origin of the term Persian Gulf". There is also a note on the place-naming policy of NG. (The online update feature is great - you can download and/or print updated plates and put them in your atlas. This not new for NG Atlases, except that they used to send updates by mail.)
Overall, I am impressed with NG's response to this situation. I am also very impressed with the quality of the atlas and its contents, except for the outermost/superficial binding paper. I have had the atlas for about 6 months, and with moderate use, the paper around the bottom of the spine has frayed. The binding itself is intact, though.
Incredible Family Resource.......2004-12-02
I've had the new atlas for 60 days and find myself looking something up every 2-3 days. It's really been fun looking up remote places like Palmyra Atoll, Kerguelen Island, the Fly River and other obscure places I read about.
And now I've found an interesting use for the password protected online atlas as well. The online Atlas gives you high-resolution access to all the Atlas map plates. You can print, copy or email maps or portions of maps. I expect the online Atlas to come in handy for school projects.
If you've read through the reviews you'll know the Iranians are upset about the "renaming" of the Persian Gulf. OK, since I'm at work, I'll log in to the password protected Atlas website, pull up Plate 75 and take a look. The Persian Gulf is labeled "Persian Gulf" but underneath it in parentheses is the label "Arabian Gulf". Apparently "Arabian Gulf", even in parentheses, is an affront to Iranian pride.
I want to be fair on this so I decided to check out some other atlases at my local bookstore to see how they handle the Gulf label. Most of the atlases use the term Persian Gulf by itself, but several prominent, highly-rated Atlases use the label "The Gulf" with no Persian or Arabian modifier, so there is legitimate debate in the cartographic world about how to refer to this body of water. For nationalistic reasons the Iranians want it only to be called the Persian Gulf, but I suspect the other countries bordering the Gulf would disagree. Most people will continue to call it the Persian Gulf, and the NGS Atlas appropriately uses that name as the primary label.
However, Iran does not own the Persian Gulf, and if a different name is now used by millions of people, then you have to admire the NGS for including both labels and not bowing to pressure from any political group, unlike the Atlases that meekly call it "The Gulf". I sympathize with the Iranian's anger over what they perceive to be psychological warfare by the Arabs, but I would still prefer to know if an alternate name is in use locally, and that is what the NGS atlas provides. Geographic names evolve, and the NGS continues its strong history of providing up-to-date cartography.
The new NGS World Atlas is among the top two or three World Atlases available, and the discounted price from Amazon makes it a relative bargain, especially when you consider you also get an online Atlas that mirrors the printed edition.
I for one feel the maps in the NGS World Atlas are as accurate and beautiful as you will find anywhere and now they're available online as well. This is a great family resource.
Fantastic, but doesn't live up to all advertisements.......2004-10-21
With a limited number of printings and a three-digit price, you expect great things from National Geographic's Altas of the World. And, for the most part, the book delivers. In lieu of a long review, I though I'd just come up with some pros and cons to explain why I gave the book the rating I did.
Pros: amazing quality of pictures/maps, city maps, intresting nation and political information, wealth of information, built-in bookmark.
Cons: not 400 pages like amazon claims (137 pages sans index), index is almost as long as rest of book, will not fit in any bookcase you own, poor binding for such an expensive book, hard to fit back in cover.
The last atlas I owned was a child's atlas from 1987. I bought the National Geographic version because I took it to be the diffinitive atlas. And it is. I'm happy with the 8th edition and I'm sure it will be a usefull reference for years to come. But given how few pages it is and how much money it cost, I'm not sure I would buy the 9th edition.
Best general atlas.......2004-10-21
I have both the 7th and 8th editions of this book, as well as recent editions of most of the other major world atlases.
In my opinion, this latest (8th) edition blows away the competition (_and_ the National Geographic's own 7th edition).
Having bought and owned world atlases for almost 50 years, I strongly recommend this atlas for home, school, or library use. I find this latest edition exceedingly accurate, especially in the areas of the Middle East (*despite* the protestations from certain _very_ organized political factions <ahem>).
Magnificent satellite photos, along with revised and improved political and geo-physical maps, set this one apart from the rest. Much of the "supplemental" map sections of the previous edition are expanded.
Regarding the reviewer who indicated that the 7th edition is "cloth-bound": well, the 7th edition (that I own) actually has a *cloth-textured* dark blue *paper* overlay on hardboard. The internal hinges are "binders' mull" (cloth) _but_ so are those of the plastic-coated covers of the 8th edition! Both editions should hold up very well. The main difference in the covers is the aesthetics, and the 8th edition is indeed quite pleasing in that department.
I most highly recommend the 8th edition of this atlas, and you certainly won't go wrong if you purchase it from Amazon.
A great addition to the panoply of atlases, and a huge treat for addictive map lovers!

My Favorite Atlas.......2007-02-02
I've had this atlas and travel planner since it came out and I love it. We've toured across the United States several times and this book is always my companion. It has so much more to offer than just maps. The suggested scenic road trips and the national park information is helpful. The pictures are exceptionally good and the color finish on the maps is so much easier to look at and read in the front seat of the car with the sun glaring in. I, too, wish they'd publish an updated version. I highly recommend this for road travelers.
The Perfect Road Atlas for Serious Travelers!.......2006-07-19
This is certainly the best road atlas I've ever come across. I've owned my own copy for about 7 years and absolutely love it. The binding is very durable, and I take it everywhere with me. In addition to accurate and clear road maps, it also contains a ton of additional useful information for people interested in pure vacationing. I've crossed at least 30 states with this atlas. I just hope NG continues to offer revised versions of this atlas in the future. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Superior work.......2006-03-13
I've owned this atlas for five years. It is BY FAR the best I've ever had. I travel a lot of miles every year in some of the remotest drivable areas in the U.S. This collection has never let me down. When WILL they put out a new edition?!
great road atlas!.......2005-03-17
We use this great road atlas all the time! We keep it in the car and refer to it as we travel quite often across the USA. One of the best we've seen...wish they would publish an updated version!
Buy it used -- it's a great atlas.......2002-02-23
I like roadtrips, and since 1999 The American Road has been an indispensable inhabitant of my car. I can't understand why NG quit producing this atlas...That's a bargain for sure.
It's a very study volume. Mine has started to pull away from the binding a bit, but that's to be expected when I throw it around the car all the time. The plastic-like cover is spill-resistant and extremely durable. No pages have ripped or become unbound. I am very rough on it, and I'm impressed that it's survived as well as it has.
The maps are readable and accurate. There's not much more exciting than that to say about a road map. They cover all of North America, though Mexico receives no detailed coverage, nor does northern Canada (where there are few roads anyway).
Aside from the maps, the atlas includes descriptions of every region of North America (Mexico is treated as one region, and Canada as two). These are really interesting, and they get the wanderlust flowing. There are also descriptions and pictures of all the major US national parks, a handy mileage chart that includes lots of cities, city/population indexes organized by state, and a comprehensive and balanced list of scenic drives around the country.

great help.......2001-10-22
very good maps, nice pictures...dont know why it is always out of stock though...i would've thought that mapquest would have printed more of this wonderful atlas.
A must for every car tourist!
A Mixed Bag.......2001-09-11
I own all three major US road atlases (Rand McNally and AAA being the other two), and none of them is perfect. This one is probably the most visually beautiful atlas you're ever likely to see. Each individual map is a work of art in its own right. The maps are lovely to look at, and the section with maps of the National Parks is a nice bonus.
HOWEVER, if you're actually planning on using this atlas to drive someplace, don't. The atlas is far less detailed than either the Rand McNally or AAA versions. Looking for a small, remote town? You won't find it here. And the indexes are abbreviated, meaning not all the towns marked on the maps will be found in the index. The city maps are tiny and show virtually no detail. They contain so little information that they can't really be used for anything; I wonder why they were even included.
One great thing about this atlas is the number of interesting sites it marks. It includes not only "official" sites like National and State Parks, but also the more off-the-wall sites that you wouldn't find in any other atlas. (For example, the site of the 1969 Woodstock concert in Bethel, NY.) The atlas may be worth buying for these locations alone.
In summary, this is the perfect atlas for someone who likes to look at maps, but who doesn't actually need to use them.
The best! I own all of the others.......2001-05-24
By far the best road atlas. Much better than Rand-McNally and AAA and others. Maps are very colorful, have lots of interesting details and features, like state parks. More city maps and in greater detail. Large easy to use mileage charts. National Parks section. Pages easy to turn. Solid front and back covers. This is the one to own.
national geographic road atlas.......2001-05-07
As a professional over-the-road truck driver, I can tell you that there are maps and there are maps. While I still carry a current copy of another major road atlas published specifically for motor carriers, the one I use 95% of the time is the National Geographic. I am ordering the spiral bound 2001 today - have already worn out my 2000! These maps are concise, clear, and easy to read. Simply the best. John C.
The New Standard.......2000-09-23
I was a life-long Rand McNally atlas user until I met the 1999 edition of National Geographic road atlas. I liked it so much I bought the 2000 edition for the library I work in.
My name is Richard B. -- and I'm a mapaholic.
I've treasured maps since childhood. I read them, study them, collect them, and critique them. But my loyalty isn't to the scrap of paper that it's printed on, but to their representation of the world of roads. A map is only as good as it's first mistake -- if the next map has fewer mistakes [of towns, roads, or even graphics], it becomes the new favorite. In the case of National Geographic's road atlas, the great readability makes it the new champion.
I haven't gone counting for hamlets in obscure corners of the country (like I used to -- with my own hometown) to find mistakes or shortcomings. The difference was readily apparent the first time I opened it up. Imagine the design principles of Edward Tufte applied to a road atlas -- clean, legible design that doesn't interfere with the information being conveyed. My thirty-something eyes still read pretty well, but I appreciate the care that went into making these maps easier to use, including more detailed city and tourist destination maps, low gloss paper [unlike some of those European atlases I've used...], and an exceptional book design to aid navigation within the atlas itself.
Don't believe me -- you don't know me from Adam -- but trust your own eyes. Look at the atlases and road maps that you've used over the years (or, at least, kept stored in your car), and then compare what you see to the fresh design of National Geographic road atlases. See if you don't agree that they set a new standard by which the other atlases must now be judged. Happy trails to you, R.B.

Customer Reviews:
Very dissapointing.......2005-08-06
We can call it a road atlas. However, in that field it fails. Poor, difficult to read mapping (like white roads on very light gray background), plenty of empty space, no small roads, no coordinates grid, no relief shading or coloring, only limited amount of interesting places marked on the maps etc. I bought it in hopes I could use it for Africa overland travels, but it is way too limited. Very nice concept but poor implementation. If you only want to drive through "highways" and are on budget then this atlas may be somewhat useful, but probably Michelin Africa regional maps 741, 745 and 746 at 1:4.000.000 scale are better investment. It contains some maps of national parks and town that may be useful. Southern part of this atlas is advertised as 1:1.000.000 scale, however that does not mean it has more details! Actual mapping in this atlas is done by South African company Map Studio and their other atlases are same low mapping standard as well.
A missed opportunity.......2003-10-12
This atlas fills a void in the geography and travel reference world. While it does cover a lot of ground, there is much that is missing. Regardless of what the folks at National Geographic intended, the buyers of this book are expecting an atlas. But this is an atlas that does not even have a decent political map of the whole continent. There is no physical map, no information at all about languages, religions, ethnic groups, population density, climate, vegetation, natural hazards or even wildlife. So what is in this atlas? There are maps covering all of Africa, maps of major cities, and maps of areas with high concentrations of national parks. There is plenty of ecotourism information and nice pictures. The maps though leave much to be desired. They basically show roads, towns and parks on a whitish background with very faint relief shading. There is no attempt to portray the nature of the landscape or the topography in any meaningful way (are we in a desert or in a jungle?), they completely forgot about railroads, and in this day of GPS navigation there is no latitude/longitude reference grid. All in all rather disapointing. Hopefully the next editon will make up for some of these shortcomings. Unfortunately it will probably be several years.
