best tmb guide.......2003-08-12
We hiked the Tour de Mont Blanc (tmb) in August 2003 and used the previous edition of this book. A british couple shared this new edition with us and we could not wait to purchase one ourselves.
This edition is up-to-date and provides excellent information about clockwise and the more traditional counterclockwise routes. Each leg is accurately described with a detailed map and elevation chart. Refuges are listed, giving the hiker information about number of available beds and phone numbers to call ahead for reservations.

The Mont Blanc area as seen by a local.......2004-02-05
This book is about inspiration, about learning the mountains. Besides the descriptions, you'll only need a map, a compass... and your experience, which can be basic for the first trips, but should be high for the last ones, especially in case problems (bad weather, injuries...) happen.
This book is not pampering you, it shows you the ways -- YOU'll have to do them. If you don't know what it takes, it's probably not for you.
I've browsed this book so many times it is now getting well worned -- after so many years in the mountains, it can be!
Nice Overview But Not A Guide.......2002-01-26
For those who know NOTHING about Mont Blanc, it is a nice start. This book was a nice introduction to Mont Blanc, but it was not sufficiently detailed to do any serious planning for a climb to the summit. There are plenty of routes, but no detailed maps, like perhaps a 1:50,000, or 1:100,000 scale. Also, there was no detailed explaination of the hut system and how to actually make reservations, etc. In addition, there were no phone numbers or addresses for more detailed information. Furthermore, there was no discussion of where to park cars, or get off of trains to start via the cable cars. Also, there were no climatology graphs for temperature or precipitation on Mont Blanc. There were not even recommendations for more detailed guide books. In my opinion, Mount Whitney, California has exponentially better information with a computer message board, maps, and very detailed guide books.
Inspirational book for aspirant alpinists.......1999-03-24
The book is an inspiration to anyone contemplating visiting the Mont Blanc Massif to climb. Route descriptions for 100 routes with inspirational colour photos of each route. My only regret is that my skill is not up to climbing most of the routes - but one can always dream.
Truly enjoyable for anyone who appreciates The Alps.......1998-07-05
A beautifully presented, large format, book with thorough history and art portrayed for Mt. Blanc. Covering the history of many of the great first climbers of not only Mt. Blanc but also several of the world's great summits, truly aids in putting mountaineering into perspective. Reading of this book before climbing Mt. Blanc, visiting Chomanix, or touring The Alps at all, will greatly aid in your appreciaion of some of the most breath-taking peaks in the world.

Book Description
The Tour of Mont Blanc is western Europe's most popular long walk, encircling its highest mountain. Over 10-11 days, you walk 106 miles through France, Italy, and Switzerland, staying in alpine refuges. The walk is strenuous because of the amount of ascent and descent, but no technical skill is needed. The scenery is superb: majestic glaciers and snow-laden peaks overlook peaceful lakes and alpine meadows.
This guidebook contains all a walker needs:
* detailed description of the official Tour and variations * planning information for transport and accommodation * information on Mont Blanc and its ascent * background on geology, habitats, and wildlife * drop-down route map * lavishly illustrated with over 60 color photographs * rucksack-friendly format and waterproof.

Essential for planning this incredible trek.......2007-04-13
This is the most up-to-date guide I could find to the Tour du Mont Blanc. I'm doing the trek in July this year (2007) and this book has been essential in planning the route, hut/refuge selections, and for general hiking/access tips.
Combine this book with Kev Reynolds book "Tour du Mont Blanc" and the Rando Editions "Pays du Mont-Blanc A1 1:50,000" hiking map and that's all your need to take this incredible journey.

Mountains, psychologists will tell you, can produce a state of reverie in humans who wander among them. So, too, can meditation, the simple act of sitting still and letting go of worries. Most of the world's great religions hold a special regard for both mountains and meditation, but few link them as closely as Buddhism. English entrepreneur, artist, writer, and alpinist Neville Shulman explores the connection in Zen in the Art of Climbing Mountains, a fine primer in the techniques of scaling great peaks while exploring the inner mind. "Nothing is possible," he notes, "without three essential elements: a great root of faith, a great ball of doubt and fierce tenacity of purpose." His small book, which weighs in at just more than 100 pages, distills the tenets of Zen Buddhist doctrine and of basic mountaineering. Readers interested in one subject will find themselves drawn to the other by Shulman's good humor and good writing as he recounts his first climb up 15,771-foot Mont Blanc.
Customer Reviews:
Intrepid traveler.......2006-01-30
Neville Shulman is one of the last of the great British adventurers. He has tackled Kilamanjoro, the Borneo jungle and the south pole -- often going it alone in extremely adverse circumstances to raise money for worthy British charities. His Zen practice keeps him in good stead under often grueling and unexpected circumctances and when he -finally- returns to the comforts of home he manages to capture the excitement, adventure, beauty, and above all the sense of personal challenge -- one man against the elements - that has almost disappeared from out post-modern consciousness. His books are admirable reminders of what the human heart, mind and soul are capable of.
5 stars for the "Gumby" review.......1999-12-28
What a superb brief description of an awful book. My 5 stars are for the "Gumby" review. I recognize the profile: melodramatist with regretably easy access to word processor gets scared in the woods. Oh, brother.
What a Gumby.......1998-01-30
Shulman's book is all together not very good. He relates a story on climbing Mont Blanc with an obviously 'vacation type' climbing group. A vacation package much like one would book to vacation in the Bahamas. He tries to make it seem like it was such a harrowing experience and although it was probably exhilarating to him, most mountaineers would consider it a 'yak' trip. The climbing inaccuracies were astounding. He describes abseiling (rappelling) as the most difficult of tasks where to any climber, it's simply a mode of transportation. Then to find out from the description, he was probably lowered down or rappelled with a top-rope belay. Give me a break! Although Shulman says that Buddhism and Zen mediation helped him with the 'ordeal,' I hardly consider almost getting lost trying to find the tram a situation where one has to dig deep to find the strength to go on. I've had more nerve-racking experiences getting lost in the inner city. He also relates nothing about his teammates, they don't even rate names. It was like he was traveling alone with ghosts in the background. Having what his teammates thought and did would have improved the story. A totally uninteresting book for climber/mountaineers and not much to offer on the philosophy of Buddhism. The only reason I give it a two is because it has two of my most favorite subjects, climbing and Buddhism. If you really want to know what it takes to climb a mountain, read "Beyond Risk : Conversations With Climbers" by Nicholas O'Connell. There are climbers in there that relate Buddhism to climbing such as Reinhold Messner.
