The authors misteach Scripture, endorse Mary worship, saint worship, and pope worship. Catholicism is a polytheistic religion.

The authors don't bother to explain how salvation can be by obedience or good deeds when Scripture repeatedly teaches Jesus died for ALL THE SINS of a person he died for, not SOME not PAST ONES ONLY. The authors also do not explain how salvation can be by obedience or good deeds when Scripture repeatedly teaches that salvation is by grace through faith and that even the faith that saves comes from God.

The authors also act as if Roman Catholicism is undivided and perfectly unified when history and present day records show it is a doctrinally confused cult in which many of it's members don't believe they are Christians and will vehemently deny it in their hatred of what actual Christians are. The authors incredibly, don't comprehend the fact that many of the ancient protestant SPLIT AWAY FROM THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. THAT HARDLY QUALIFIES AS UNITY.

The authors also provide zero evidence that the NT was not originally written in Greek. They provide no evidence that God would allow the original wording to be lost only to have a copy of a translation to rely upon. The authors do not translate correctly the Greek in which Jesus supposedly claims Jesus is the foundation of the church and ignore the fact that churches and temples are not built on two foundations but one.

The scholarship is a joke.

Conversion stories are always enjoyable to the faithful but generally short of convincing to the committed detractor. But, the fact that our minds are generally closed does not mean we cannot know that our minds are closed and attempt to give each witness his or her due attention. Give it an open-minded hearing and enjoy the enthusiasm of a fresh understanding and respect for scripture and fellow believers. Serious Protestants and Catholics alike are bound by the love they preach to share with each other. But how can one share if no one listens? Listen and be renewed with their stories. You too may be surprised by truth.

this book was wonderful for me to read. It reconnected me with why I am Catholic. If you have any interest in why people are Catholic even if you have no desire it is a good book to read. I think that there should be more understanding as to why people choose the faith they do. This book does that.

Good for a shot in the arm.......2007-03-31

Conversion stories are always a fun read, when one is reading the stories of those who convert to their own faith.

Of course, when the conversion is one away from one's own tradition, that is another thing entirely.

However, fair is fair, and evangelicals have been publishing and telling conversion stories about how people were "saved" from the Catholic Church since the beginning of their movement some 400 years ago. It is remarkable therefore that some would criticize these humble and powerful stories of people who "swam the Tiber" in the other direction as "triumphalist" (whatever that word means) or inappropriate. Yet that is exactly what many evangelicals have done regarding the renaissance in Catholic apologetics that has occurred over the last 20 years.

However, in my opinion, this renaissance is neither "triumphalist" in a negative sense, nor inappropriate. For, in theology, the only way to get at the truth is to use the time honored tool of philosophical reasoning when discussing Divine Revelation. That means making arguments from Sacred Scripture. Arguments invite counterarguments. Reformationists reject the authority of the Church to settle arguments when they get out of hand, or threaten unity. Therefore, we will continue to argue with each other, even while we often work side by side in the trenches fighting things like abortion and so called "gay marriage."

This book clearly shows that ideas have consequences, especially when those ideas are religious ones. Every person whose story is in this book is someone who had the courage to not only challenge received "dogma" but also live their life in a way in conformity with their ideas, regardless of the consequences.

Luckily, these brave individuals were not building their houses on the sand of their own understanding, but rather on the rock of Jesus Christ and the teachings of His Church.

This book and its companion volumes are a great tool when one needs the support they provide. They are also useful for explaining to reasonable non-Catholics why people would find the Catholic Church a place to call home.

I struggled with whether to give this book series 4 or 5 stars. As collections of conversion stories go, these are excellent. However, conversion stories are monologues, not dialogues, and are therefore less interesting to me than a good discussion of various theological issues. I feel good editing and inclusion of other ideas (perhaps a commentary?) could have addressed this weakness to some degree. However, fair is fair, and most other faith traditions (especially Fundamentalist Protestantism) don't extend the same intellectual courtesy when discussing the conversion stories of those who chose to leave the Catholic Church.

At the very least, these books prove that the Catholic faith is compelling, and reasonable. I, of course, believe it to be true. However, until He comes again, I fear that debate will continue. When we are Christian it will be a good discussion. When we fail, it will be shouting match. Such is the Christian experience post the reformation.

Pretty Satisfying Answers to Tough Questions.......2007-03-23

These stories get to the point on the toughest questions that I've always wanted answered by Catholics and provided me with answers that are more satisfying than what I've traditionally heard from protestants on these issues. (Actually, anything would be more satisfying than the answers I've been given relating to James 2:24.) The authors of the stories represent a good cross-section of denominations, but since there are so many, I've already started reading SBT 2.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02

Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.

pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16

Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

This book was as good as the first. I think it gives a good understanding as to why someone would convert. As a Catholic myself it has made my faith stronger. I bought the book to then pass on to someone who is considering becoming Catholic. I would not however try to force my beliefs on someone but if someone is interested to understand more it is a great book to read.

Thorough, well-researched, well-written essays.......2006-08-12

I have read both the first and second book of Surprised By Truth. Both were excellent. Anyone reading them objectively, with an open mind and heart, will learn a lot about the Christian faith in general and Catholicism specifically. I could say a lot about these essays; they are so well-written. What is most important is that they are written from the point of view of love and truth-seeking. I recommend Surprised By Truth.

Wonderful Sequel! Great Testimonies! Highly Inspiring!.......2006-06-24

This sequel to the initial book is extremely good! We now have 15 more testimonies from Protestants and Mormons among other faiths on their personal journeys to the Catholic Faith. The stories are heartfelt and candid and the authors even have their contact information at the end so that you can ask follow-up questions if you ever feel like doing so. Great for anyone who is interested in conversion stories and who is looking for encouragement in their own journeys to the faith. Highly recommended.

If a Catholic is trying to become stronger in his faith, he will enjoy this book. It is also useful for Protestants who want to learn why so many are leaving their ranks after studying history and reading the Bible! This story also contains a former Wiccan, abortion supporter, and Jew. The only drawback is most of these stories can be found online for free at websites like the Coming Home Network. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this work.

"Where is that in the Bible?" by Patrick Madrid is the perfect brief book for anyone who has wondered what the Biblical basis is for some of the things that Catholics do and believe. "it is designed to be a handy reference guide, an overview of the major biblical passages that pertain to many issues that tend to come up between Catholics and non-Catholics." But even if you never use this book to debate with anyone regarding your faith, it is useful simply to have a deeper understanding of one's own faith.

There are six main divisions to the book dealing with authority, doctrines, the sacraments, customs and practices, moral issues and non-Catholic beliefs. The chapter on "Authority" discusses the roots of the papacy, the authority of the Church, the role of tradition and the role of Scripture. "Doctrines" discusses Catholic's understanding of Mary, the mother of Jesus, the Trinity, Purgatory, salvation and more. The roots of the seven sacraments are covered in the chapter on "The Sacraments." "Customs and Practices" covers many of the practices that others may take issue with in the Church. For example, the role of priestly celibacy, tithing, and repetition in prayer. "Moral Issues" covers many of the hot-button issues of our day including abortion, divorce, and homosexuality. The final chapter "Non-Catholic Beliefs" seems somewhat out of place in the book, but it deals with why certain non-Catholic beliefs are not biblically based such as the claim of Jehovah's witnesses that only 144,000 will be saved.

"Where is that in the Bible?" is not an exhaustive discussion of these beliefs and practices. Rather, it offers brief treatments with a few well-chosen Bible passages. It is a worthy introduction for those who have wondered about any of these issues.

Handy Weapon On The Religious Battlefield.......2007-03-22

I joined the Catholic Church at Easter in 2000. I used to be a Baptist/Congregational/Bible Church Protestant. With my past and my present, I'm one of those people who's literally been on both sides of the fence in the "who's right, who's wrong" debate. Patrick Madrid, a favorite apologist of mine, compiled this wonderful little "fieldguide" to Catholicism that takes major Catholic beliefs and supplies Biblical evidence for them. He also uses the Bible to debunk a few beliefs of other religions as well.

The book is broken down into six distinct areas of study: 1) Authority, 2) Doctrines, 3) The Sacraments, 4) Customs and Practices, 5) Moral Issues, and 6) Non-Catholic Beliefs. What makes this book unique is the fact that Madrid goes out of his way to eliminate Sacred Tradition, the Catechism, and those books of the Bible not accepted by most Protestants in order to defend each issue. He will sometimes hint at these sources, but primarily uses the Bible as accepted by most mainstream Protestant faiths. Much like his book, "Answer Me This!," which takes fifty frequently asked questions by Protestants of Catholicism and answers them, Madrid breaks each section of this book into short, to-the-point explanations. This isn't an exhaustive or thorough resource book, but it is easy enough to carry along with you most of the time. I'd also suggest toting along a Bible with you, as Madrid lists numerous references but does not print each one of them out on the pages of his book.

Overall, this book combined with "Answer Me This!" will provide any Catholic with a solid defense of their faith. It's also a wonderful book to use in day-to-day Bible study. It's a wonderful little resource to have around whenever friends or neighbors question your faith.

REFERENCE TOOL.......2007-03-11

This is a great little reference tool. I gave it to a friend who is in almost daily contact with non-catholics who think that Catholics don't read the Bible (and often mis-quote passages), It makes points without being argumentative or unkind. Just the facts, Maam! (to quote an old TV detective).

Where is that in the Bible.......2006-11-24

I have a nephew who is an only child and a blind person. He requested me to give him an audio/CD version of this book as a gift. I would really like to heed his request but I was unable to find one in that format. I asked him how he found out about the book and he told me that he listened to the author being interviewed at CNN and he memorized the title of the book and the name of the author. He provided me with correct information including correct spelling. I didn't feel good telling him i couldn't do it because it's unavailable. I am hoping to see an audio/CD version soon at Amazon. A bit misleading...........2006-07-11

The summary for this book is a little bit misleading. It assumes that you are Catholic and trying to prove your beliefs to a non-Catholic, and even there it falls short by only pointing you to a bible verse and not giving any explanation. If I were Catholic I might be able to use this personally, but it won't help you with a non-believer. For anyone seeking answers about the Catholic faith it just brings up more questions. Try the catechism, even though it's intimidating. If it isn't in there, it isn't truly Catholic doctrine.
"A Protestant/Catholic Conversation" is good too.

This was a great travel guide. We used it to find all the major sites and attractions in Madrid. The one thing I wish it would have had would be a top 10 list of places to see. Sometimes you have limited time in a city and you want to make sure you hit all the major spots.

This book is very informative and easy to follow with one big exception. The author refers you to "see page 183" for more information about a particular subject, but they are actually referring to a totally different page. You have to hunt around and flip through pages to find the right page. Maybe they should have proofread the manuscript a little better.

I didn't pay close attention to the description of this product before I purchased it. It truly is simply a listing of the Top 10 attractions, restaurants, etc. There is good information in it, but I was a little disappointed. Had I browsed this book in a "real" book store before I'd purchased it, I would probably NOT have chosen to buy it.

Every Dorling Kindersley Guide has been a great and interesting book... and delightful to have and use, even if you are not traveling to that location, but are only interested in learning more!

They are beautifully illustrated, well developed with accurate information (it is unusual for hotel and restaurant information to be that accurate), have enough history to help the reader understand the people and cultural background, and have a lot of useful travel information and useable maps in the appendixes.

Discussion:
The book begins with "Introducing Madrid", including a complete map, a review, the city's history, and Madrid thought the Year - including events, etc.

Areas with an "At a glance" overview, then has subsections of specific blocks, or forums, then specific locations, churches, historical monuments, bridges, galleries, etc.

Architectural reviews include various views, and cutaways; given greater understanding and better perspective. They are all attractive, if not works of art - honestly.

The travelers' Info. offers good and valid info. on prices, currencies, customs, important words, etc. I have used the reviews on hotel's restaurants and nightclubs, in most European cities, and Dorling has yet to disappoint me. I have found they were useful and accurate, and helpful with my touring and site decisions.

The books are so well thought-out that it has multiple maps, with various lookup tables, and the book's flaps are designed to be used as bookmarks for map pages.

Negative:
The only negative with this book is that it is substantial with good quality paper, and is therefore heavier than other travel books.

Conclusion:
Each book in this series is a great help, and beautiful collectible resource. As the President, CEO of an International Meeting Planning Corporation we have many resources and techniques to learn about places we have meetings / groups at as well as the cities and sights. But, as a traveler, this book really is top notch and I would recommend it to anyone going on a personal trip, or wanting to learn about a city, or location. We have used some of these books to augment our research to investigate cities for our groups.

Search and Rescue is a thought-provoking and compelling book that should become required reading in every Catholic high school. As Catholics, many of us do a very poor job of sharing our faith with others. We're either reluctant to get into discussions with our Protestant friends, or we may have a condescending attitude about our faith that pushes others away. This book will prepare, encourage, and empower you to share your Catholic faith with family, friends, and others, and could quite possibly help to bring them into or back into the Catholic Church.

Search and Rescue is a practical, hands-on style, guide to evangelizing. Patrick Madrid takes the reader into the specific steps that they need in learning how to DO evangelization. He deals with using opportunities to talk to strangers, friends, family, door-to-door evangelists, and especially the bitter ex-Catholic person that most will deal with eventually. Madrid shows you that in order to evangelize you needn't be a theological expert, but that you MUST have a proper mindset towards evangelization and the people that you are trying to evangelize. He warns that our pride and arrogance can get in the way of the best laid arguements. In fact, there are entire chapters of this book dedicated to: making sure that we are doing it for God and not for glory, not treating people like scalps to be won for the faith, making sure that we ARE sincerely friendly and loving to people (and not just trying to come across that way), and recognizing that the Holy Spirit does the true converting and that we are but tools of that conversion.

Useful ideas that will be especially gleaned by the reader of this book: making sure that you talk more to God about the person you are trying to convert than you talk to the person about God, be constantly aware of the tendancy to pride and the subsequent need for consist visits to the sacrament of confession, and being reasonably prepared to deal with common arguements.

Search and Rescue is NOT an apologetic or theological work. It is a how-to manual for APPLYING apologetic and thoelogical studies. The author gives lots of great references for where to find good study guides for the faith and apologetics, including a strong emphasis on person daily prayer and scripture reading.

This is an awesome work that will teach people how to evangelize those around us in the world, as well as how to deal with the painful situation of a close friend or family member who leaves the Church over 'issues' or because of a conversion to protestantism. Those looking to become serious about evangelizing people in the world, or those confused about what to do about the family member being wooed by charismatic protestant church members NEED this book.

Helpful but not very.......2004-01-31

This book could have been much more helpful. It does give good quotes from the Bible, lessons he has learned, and examples from history to help along the way. However, most of what he says seems obvious at times. Even though it's obvious, it's good advice, but advice that is hard to follow. The recommeneded reading list is a great addition at the back of the book to help people begin reading about the Catholic faith.

This is the one book that really opened my eyes to the reality of the issues about most non-catholics. This book is the practical guide to anyone who always wanted to share their Catholic faith to non-catholics but don't know how. Offer lots of Prayers for the conversion of non-catholics and then follow what this book says. It is not our clever arguements that converts people but the loving grace of Jesus Christ our God. As St. Francis said: "Evangelize always using words only when necessary." This 'Search and Rescue' book really shows 'How to Bring Your Family and Friends Into, or Back Into, the Catholic Church.'

Fulfilling the Great Commission--Catholic style!.......2002-09-14

Before I read this book, I thought my days as an evangelist had ended the moment I came home to Rome. Patrick Madrid is proof that the task of evangelizing is not purely a Protestant endeavor. He not only explains *why* we should help our friends and loved ones come into the fullness of truth of the Church, he gives lots of practical and sensitive advise on *how* to go out there and do it.

I don't care what other people say of this book. Those affirmig it's fake, they hadn't ever read it. Or have some special reasons to do so. "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see..." This book won't make you feel comfortable. It'll make you feel free. It'll make you feel you're "not the only one" to feel you'd been lied to for centuries.

Here is a serie of books which turns "the whole world" upside down. I learned a lot of it and I hope that a new book from A.T. Fomenko will follow very quick. A absolute must for everybody who is interested in history or even a little bit from it.

Prescient St Augustine?.......2006-02-05

We can so far divide the New Chronology into the following three parts:

a) The verifiable theory that proves consensual chronology wrong with the aid of astronomy, statistics and mathematics;

b) The new chronology hypothesis based on a new understanding of known historical facts and the most likely logical explanation of the most obvious inconsistencies inherent in the official version of history;

c) The history conjectures, that is experimental historical reconstructions based on assumptions that the authors believe to make sense in the light of their research and linguistic parallels - void of ironclad factual support to date.

Fomenko's theory complies with the most rigid scientific standards as a whole:

It gives a coherent explanation of what we already know.

- It is consistent: independent lines of inquiry all lead to the same conclusion.

- The predictions it makes are confirmed empirically.

Fomenko goes by the following axioms:

- Chronology is the basis of history;

- Human evolution has always been linear, gradual and irreversible;

- The "cyclic" nature of human civilization is a myth, likewise all the gaps, duplicates, "dark ages" and "renaissances" that we know from consensual history;

- The accumulation of geographical knowledge as reflected in cartography is a gradual and irreversible process;

- The chronological distance between a given manuscript and the events described therein is proportional to the amount of distortions it contains;

- There is no "useless" information in authentic ancient sources.

Why the mainstream historians do not shower mathematician Academician Dr.Prof Fomenko with thanks and laurels?

The Russians:

Because Fomenko asserts that there was no such thing as the Tartar and Mongol invasion followed by three centuries of slavery, providing a formidable body of documental evidence to prove his assertion. The so-called "Tartars and Mongols" were the actual ancestors of the modern Russians, living in a bilingual state with Arabic spoken as freely as Russian. The ancient Russian state was governed by a double structure of civil and military authorities. The hordes were actually professional armies with a tradition of lifelong conscription (the recruitment being the so-called "blood tax"). Their "invasions" were punitive operations against the regions that attempted tax evasion. Fomenko proves that Russian history as we know it today is a blatant forgery concocted by a host of German scientists brought to Russia by the usurper dynasty of the Romanovs, whose ascension to the throne was the result of coup d'état, charged with the mission of making their reign look legitimate. Fomenko proves Ivan the Terrible to be a collation of four rulers, no less. They represented the two rival dynasties - the legitimate rulers and the ambitious upstarts. The winner took it all! Over some 30 years of controversy, Russian historians have made a most remarkable transition - they were initially accusing the young mathematician Fomenko of anticommunist dissident activity and attempts to deface the historical legacy of Soviet Russia; nowadays the middle-aged mathematician is accused of adhering to "pro-communist Russian nationalism" and defacing the proud historical legacy of Great Russia.

The Westerners:

Because Fomenko blows consensual Russian history to smithereens, successfully removing a crucial cornerstone from underneath the otherwise impeccable edifice of World History. Fomenko adds insult to injury, wiping out one by one the Ancient Rome (the foundation of Rome in Italy is dated to the XIV century A. D.), the Ancient Greece and its numerous poleis, which he identifies as the mediaeval crusader settlements on the territory of Greece, and the Ancient Egypt (the pyramids of Giza become dated to the XI-XV century A. D. and identified as the royal cemetery of the Global "Mongolian" Empire, no less). The civilization of the Ancient Egypt is irrefutably dated to the XII-XV century A. D. with the aid of the ancient Egyptian horoscopes cut in stone. He was the first one to decipher and date all such horoscopes, coming up with mediaeval dates in every case. English historians rage at the suggestion that the history of Ancient England was de facto a Byzantine import transplanted to the English soil by the fugitive Byzantine nobility. To reward the English historians who consider themselves the true scribes of World History, the cover of the present book portrays Tintoretto's Jesus Christ crucified on the Big Ben.

The Chinese:

Because Fomenko wipes out the Ancient History of China outright. No such thing. Full point. The compilation of the so-called Ancient Chinese History is reliably datable to the XVII-XVIII century only. It is perfectly recognizable as the Ancient European history, reworked and transcribed in hieroglyphs as yet another historical transplantation, this time performed on the Chinese soil by the loving Jesuit hands. The Chinese are the next in line to go berserk. Chinese history is inevitably bound to get both more ancient and more eventful, proportionally to the growing involvement of China in the world affairs. Chinese historians will keep on finding valid proof of prehistoric Chinese spaceflights until the Politburo orders them to shut up.

The Arabs:

Too bad. Islam with all its key figures is datable to XV-XVI century A. D. Arabic historians may find consolation in the crucial historical role of the Ottoman Empire in the XVI-XVII century. The trouble is that this empire was initially a Christian state, with Hagia Sophia identifiable as Temple of Solomon, according to Fomenko! We can only guess if the acquisition of Alexander the Great (a Macedonian and a Christian) as the founder of the Muslim World Empire will make Fomenko's theories more acceptable to the Arabic mainstream. He certainly does not spare any holy cows at all, claiming The Stone of Qa'Aba in Mecca to contain the lost Arch of the Covenant.

The Divinity:

Despite of reiterated statement that his theory is all about chronology and not Religion, Fomenko stirs up a whole condominium of wasp nests. His collection of anathemas, fatwa, and other condemnations from all parties concerned is already considerable. Little wonder, considering that the history of religions à la Fomenko looks as follows: the pre-Christian period (before the XI century and JC), Bacchic Christianity (XI-XII century, before and after JC), JC Christianity (XII-XVI century) and its subsequent mutations into Orthodox Christianity, the Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, and so on.

According to Fomenko we know strictly NOTHING about the events that predate the X century A. D.

St Augustin was prescient when he spoke unto us: "be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth."

Something of a disappointment.......2005-09-09

After having read the first volume of this expected series of 7 volumes I was triggered by the thesis of these authors that ancient Greek and Roman history did in fact take place in the Middle Ages. So I started studying medieval history of the Middle East - also known as Islamic history - to find out if the opponents of the ancient Greeks and Romans - the Acheamenid Persians, Sassanids, Scythians, Egyptians, etc. - also have their duplicates in medieval history. My search was disappointing: none of the many medieval Islamic dynasties seemed to correspond to the ancient middle eastern rulers.

However, I did find a close correspondence between Herodotus' Persian kings and medieval events:

- the defeat and capture of an Anatolian king - the Lydian Croesus - by the Persian conqueror Cyrus is identical to the defeat and capture of another Anatolian king - sultan Bayezid - by the Asian/Mongol conqueror Tamerlane;
- the Persian conquest of Egypt by the cruel tyrant Cambyses reds almost exactly as the Ottoman conquest of Egypt by Selim the Grim (note the nickname!);
- Darius the Lawgiver of the Persian Empire looks very much alike to Sulayman the Magnificent, the Lawgiver in Islamic history;
- Xerxes, whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by the Greeks at the naval battle of Salamis, looks like Selim II (the Sot) whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by a Spanish-Italian alliance at the naval battle of Lepanto.

I should have expected Fomenko et al. to arrive at similar conclusions, however, they claim that the Persian kings are the alter egos of the Angevin kings of Sicily whose biographies do not contain the exploits of the Persian kings.

The similiarities I indicate lead to the conclusion that Herodotus must have written his Histories at the close of the 16th century. But this is extremely late, given that Herodotus is "the Father of History", so therefore all other "ancient" histories must have been fabricated even later. Yet, the founders of modern chronology - Scaliger and Petavius - laid their foundations also at the close of the 16th century and had the full corpus of ancient histories already at their disposal.

It seems to me that Fomenko has to address these inconsistencies, maybe in the forthcoming 5 volumes?

Another critique of their book is that the correspondencies between different rulers are often based on a superficial comparison of the biographies; upon a more thorough comparison many details appear that do not correspond at all.

Finally, the authors rely heavily on the works of Gregorovius (1821-1891!!) - his medieval histories of Rome and Athens - as the source of medieval history; these works are - at least in the West - hoplessly outdated and have been superceded by more up-to-date works (for instance, Julius Norwich's trilogy on Byzantine history is not even cited).

If you agree with Fomenko that Roman chronology is basically the foundation of the entire edifice of global chronology; you would also certainly agree that despite its numerous gaps and inconsistencies, Roman history is the best-documented field of ancient history, and thus a reference scale. But how well is the actual date of the Eternal City's foundation known?

Firstly, Rome is supposed to have been founded by the Trojans who had to flee after the fall of Troy. Some claim Rome to have been founded by Aeneas and Ulysses shortly after Troy had fallen; others are of the opinion that there was an entire dynasty that ruled for 500 years between the fall of Troy and the foundation of Rome.

Well, that's just an innocent 500 years long misunderstanding compared with what heretic Fomenko says, asserts, proves in his second volume: Second Roman Empire, Third Roman Empire, Biblical Kingdom of Israel, Biblical Kingdom of Judah, Holy Roman Empire are stories about basically same events, written from different points of view at different times. The underlying events have actually taken place during xii-xv cy. These histories have been written and perfected by multitude of highly talented humanist and clerical writers of xiii-xvi cy disguised as "ancients" with glorious names like Homer, Pluto, Thucydides etc..Chronology 2.0 beta..

Pleased so far.......2007-01-22

I bought this book recently (the new edition). I have read through it in planning my upcoming trip. Although I have yet to test the accuracy of the information in person, the book strikes me as practical. First, the book is paperback and fairly slender-- so not too bulky or heavy to actually carry around while you're traveling. The second thing that struck me is that it provides maps, including a metro line map. Although the maps may not be the most user friendly with their small print, they'll do fine for the trip planning stage of the trip (I usually get a good city map for navigation once I arrive to my destination city). The sections seem thorough, with an entire chapter on the history of the city. I was pleased with the day trip chapter as well, which lists many options for day trips, how you can get there, what you can do there, and how long it takes to travel there.
As far as the accuracy issue, I have yet to find a guidebook that is completely accurate. That being the case, I view them as one source of information among many and do not rely exclusively on a single guidebook.

I have been reading the last 3 editions of Lonely Planet Madrid and it contains tons of innaccurate information over and over.
As in Spain one can not fine a lot of Australian wines, they draw the conclusion that "Spaniards do not take leaps into the unknown"
It is like everytime they make a new edition the stay 2 days in Madrid and take everything of the last edition, fading Madrid's feeling, culture, way of life and thinking.

Photography is also awful but this is just my opinion.

Looking at the dates, it seems like the reader reviews for this book are all for the old guide. The new version just came out, and I think it looks and reads a lot better, so maybe it's time to put up some new reader reviews.

I spent 5 days in Madrid last August and found this book to be a useful guide. it will lead you to a good time in madrid, which consists of going to the museums, a bull fight and eating a lot. also, i recommend going to one of the sherry bars mentioned in the book.

How NOT to do Madrid.......2002-02-27

First and foremost, this book states that the Madrid Metro is "safe". This is not true for foreign males! The central part of the Metro (near the art museums and the city center) is rife with pick-pockets. We caught 1 attempt each day, or first 3 days there. The perpetrators were not, as some claim, "South Americans".

Many restaurants listed are gone. All prices in the book are quoted in pisitas, which is annoying now that everything is in Euros.

The maps are barely useful, being rather too small to read street names easily.

I have enjoyed other Lonley Planet Guides very much, but this one is a real stinker.

For Catholics dealing with objections to the papacy or any of their doctrinal positions, there are two types of criticisms they will encounter. The first is the carefully worded assertions by those who have researched both Scripture and Church history, are well versed in the history of the debate and its current state, and can rely on accurate and precise theological positions from which an intelligent debate on the issue may begin. This is the bread and butter of many theologians and apologists and is both intellectually stimulating and a means of presenting the true nature of the issues at hand for those who seek it.

While Patrick Madrid might well enjoy that sort of thing, it's not really what he's aiming at in Pope Fiction. You see, there is also another sort of objection - the type that relies on innuendo, paranoia, irrelevant facts, character assassination, and historical fabrication. In what might be called Homer Simpson apologetics, Madrid deals with the objections to the papacy that make you want to say "d-oh!" In this regard, Madird thus joins a tradition of past Catholic apologists such as Francis J. Sheed and contemporaries like Karl Keating in the thankless task of clearing the debris of polemical rhetoric spewed by restorationist sects and atheist opponents alike (is it not ironic how these two are allied in this regard?) and allow men from John Henry Newman in the past to Thomas Howard and Peter Kreeft today to be free to grapple with their counterparts in other traditions without having to trip over every self-proclaimed "bible expert."

Here, Madrid is facing squarely the many misconceptions regarding the papacy and its history and eliminating the residue left from years of modernist skepticism and bigoted "know-nothingism." His point is not to refute the more substantial objections of Protestants like D. A. Carlson or Orthodox theologians like John Meyendorff but to repel the baseless accusations of fundamentalists like Alexander Hislop, Lorraine Boettner, Tim LaHaye, and Dave Hunt. In this he succeeds with ease and also retains a sense of humor, clarity of purpose, and spirit of respect sorely lacking in the purely polemical atmosphere generated by his opponents.

One by one, the straw men go tumbling: the Petra/Petros distinction, the 666 claim, the history of bad popes, the Crusades, Galileo, the anti-popes, and so forth. In touching on more substantial areas of dispute (e.g., Pope Honorius and the Sixth Ecumentical Council), Madrid certainly does not settle the issue but he proves it to be no slam dunk for the other side either.

One of the more relevant for the coming months is that of "Pope Joan" - the legend of a female pope who reigned during the "Dark Ages" that Madrid demonstrates is actually a polemically motivated fantasy created centuries after the alleged fact (Madrid has posted this chapter on his website here). The story is being made into a major film no doubt in time for the next round of calls for women's ordination to the Catholic priesthood. Such efforts underscore the danger of putting forth fabricated evidence for the purpose of attacking ecclesial opponents - if the attacks are accepted into the larger culture, it undermines confidence in the claims of Christianity in general.

It is probably not the most fun in the world countering those with the courage of their derelictions. However, all those in a more historically rooted form of Christianity will find themselves with common ground on many issues with Catholics. As the largest and most identifiable of such churches, the Catholic Church is the target for all those at odds with Christian history. Attacks even upon positions peculiar to Catholicism often lead to more general attacks on the historic Christian faith. Thus an attack on the papacy becomes an attack on the episcopacy becomes an attack on church authority becomes an attack on moral authority. If we are to oppose those in other Christian traditions, we should not base it upon lies. Patrick Madrid has given us in Pope Fiction an essential starting point for debates on the papacy. Then we can deal with the real issues...
