Book Description
A grand and revelatory portrait of Wall Street’s most storied investment bank
Wall Street investment banks move trillions of dollars a year, make billions in fees, pay their executives in the tens of millions of dollars. But even among the most powerful firms, Lazard Frères & Co. stood apart. Discretion, secrecy, and subtle strategy were its weapons of choice. For more than a century, the mystique and reputation of the "Great Men" who worked there allowed the firm to garner unimaginable profits, social cachet, and outsized influence in the halls of power. But in the mid-1980s, their titanic egos started getting in the way, and the Great Men of Lazard jeopardized all they had built.
William D. Cohan, himself a former high-level Wall Street banker, takes the reader into the mysterious and secretive world of Lazard and presents a compelling portrait of Wall Street through the tumultuous history of this exalted and fascinating company. Cohan deconstructs the explosive feuds between Felix Rohatyn and Steve Rattner, superstar investment bankers and pillars of New York society, and between the man who controlled Lazard, the inscrutable French billionaire Michel David-Weill, and his chosen successor, Bruce Wasserstein.
Cohan follows Felix, the consummate adviser, as he reshapes corporate America in the 1970s and 1980s, saves New York City from bankruptcy, and positions himself in New York society and in Washington. Felix’s dreams are dashed after the arrival of Steve, a formidable and ambitious former newspaper reporter. By the mid-1990s, as Lazard neared its 150th anniversary, Steve and Felix were feuding openly.
The internal strife caused by their arguments could not be solved by the imperious Michel, whose manipulative tendencies served only to exacerbate the trouble within the firm. Increasingly desperate, Michel took the unprecedented step of relinquishing operational control of Lazard to one of the few Great Men still around, Bruce Wasserstein, then fresh from selling his own M&A boutique, for $1.4 billion. Bruce’s take: more than $600 million. But it turned out Great Man Bruce had snookered Great Man Michel when the Frenchman was at his most vulnerable.
The LastTycoons is a tale of vaulting ambitions, whispered advice, worldly mistresses, fabulous art collections, and enormous wealth—a story of high drama in the world of high finance.
Customer Reviews:
A great book for "warped" people (like myself)!.......2007-06-11
660+ pages about the 150+ year history of Lazard Feres might put most people to sleep. Not me! As someone who actually likes this stuff, I found this book fascinating. The history of big money and finance is actually one of big personalties, and this book gives an inside look at several of the major players. Although tedious at times to read, I made it through the entire book in a couple of days. The most fascinating part of the entire story is simply that money at the levels discussed in this book doesn't seem real--most people could never fathom how corporate finance is conducted. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject of investment banking, especially those considering a career in that arena.
Long but worth it.......2007-05-30
extremely long, but it gives you a great description of how an organization rises and falls with the times and the great men who are at the wheel.
Destined to be a Classic.......2007-05-24
Cohan has brought to life a vivid and spellbinding tale of the legendary giants in the investment banking field (Meyer, Rohatyn, David-Weill, Rattner, and Wasserstein) at Lazard, offering a compelling and revealing portrait of the relentless personalities that invented, dominated and defined the last few decades of M&A banking. At the same time, The Last Tycoons is, at its core, a saga of ambition, egotism, greed, vanity and pride of Shakespearean proportions played out on the grand stage of corporate takeovers and national politics.
What emerges is not a noble picture of what these ostensibly "Great Men" purported themselves to be. Instead, it is apparent that at Lazard, the black arts of power and greed were the currency used to exhort and extort men of high ambition and intellect to achieve stature and enormous fees. The long shadow of Andre Meyer (unquestionably a Sith Lord) looms over the Lazard partnership and his protégés and successors, Felix Rohatyn and Michel David-Weill. Meyer was a brilliant financier with no peer with the exception of Bruce Wasserstein and it's fitting and deserving that the story of Lazard begins and ends with these two men. In between, Michel and Felix weave a complex and fascinating legacy of fear and loathing in the intervening decades.
For bankers and professionals in the field, Cohan's detail and emotional and psychological nuances will be tantalizing and relevant. For those aspiring to enter the field, it's a cautionary tale - it's very hard to play on the big stage on Wall St without darkening your soul. This story is destined to be a Classic amongst Barbarians and Den of Thieves
barbarians at the gates of central park .......2007-05-19
maybe the first casualty of wealth is self-knowledge. that is the takeaway from William Cohan's fine history of the fabled lazard freres banking house. in these pages we watch titans of finance gloat and preen while their castle crumbles from corruption and mismanagement.
Its a terrific story peopled with fascinating characters. who wouldn't, after reading this book, want to dine with the formidable felix rohatyn. He fled the Nazis as a boy, rescued New York from financial ruin and ditched Lazard at just the right moment to serve the nation as Bill Clinton's Ambassador to France. His intellect and achievement dominate the book, just as Felix dominated wall street for a generation. His departure from the firm caps the end of "the great man" era in investment banking. In Rohatyn's day only a select handful of wise men could be trusted to guide transactions. Nowadays all you need is armani and a spread sheet.
Even as he maps the tectonic movement in investment banking, Cohan keeps it light with plenty of well-researched dish on criminal investigations, love affairs, fabulous art collections, New Yorkana and the occasional drop to earth by some of Lazard's wax-winged partners. I closed the book -- a whopping 750 pp's -- edified and thoroughly entertained.
Thorough and Completely Entertaining.......2007-05-12
When Bill, an old friend, told me he was writing a book about Lazard, I thought, "Who will care?" I was ignorant. My only obligation was to buy the book, not to read it. Even if I had not known the author, I would not have been able to put this book down. Writing is a lonely pursuit, and the endless thought and organization, the hundreds of interviews on both sides of the Atlantic, the researching and re-drafting, all make the author's dedication, and the reader's, worthwhile.
Lazard was truly the first global Wall Street firm. Andre Meyer, the brilliant global pioneer, comes to life. Felix Rohatyn, away from the deserved platitudes, is complex; Michel David-Weill Machiavellian. Bruce Wasserstein, prototypically capitalist, can exist only on Wall Street. Steve Rattner alone comes across as someone for whom an investment banker would want to work. The rudderless leadership for decades, the infighting among the partners, the lack of organizational cohesion all bar the firm from the top tier. The extraordinary access Cohan had to the principals and many others suggest there was much to tell. Cohan's natural wit and cynicism spice the story.
Some have criticized the author for using secondary sources. As one who did not read many of those articles, I was delighted he included them. That Wasserstein alone did not cooperate further excuses Cohan from consulting secondary sources to complete the tale.

Book Description
With Dark Harbor, Stuart Woods proved yet again that he is the master of the popular crime novel. Now he outdoes himself with the newest addition to the series.
Stone Barrington embarks on his most dangerous adventure yet when he takes on a job as a lawyer for a sleazy and clueless con man-and ends up getting embroiled in the underworld of the New York mafia. It started out as just another late night at Elaine's, where Stone was eating a porterhouse steak and enjoying the company of his friends. But when Herbie Fisher, a notoriously not-so-sharp swindler, walked in, the pleasant atmosphere turned to ice.
Herbie convinces Bill Eggers, the managing partner of Woodman & Weld, to sign him on as a client-with the goal of taking down the infamous mafia boss Carmine Datilla. And even though Stone doesn't want to have anything to do with Herbie-or the mafia, for that matter-he is soon coerced into being Herbie's lawyer.
With the help of his ex-partner, Dino, Stone investigates "Datilla the Hun," and the rest of the mob family, encountering intrigue and danger at every turn. Will Stone finally take a stand, or will he end up at the bottom of Sheepshead Bay?
With the swift action, razor-sharp characters, and crackling dialogue that are Stuart Woods's hallmarks, Fresh Disasters is Woods at the very height of his storytelling powers.

Stale Disaster.......2007-06-25
How many 6' 2" nymphomanics does one normally meet in a matter of days ?
Shallow, trite, ridiculous, simple-minded tripe. Has the author gone senile ?
It was an evening's read.......2007-06-11
Like several of the other reviewers, I anticipated the arrival of the new Stuart Woods novel. I, too, was disappointed. Good grief, did he change the sheets between sexual encounters? Or perhaps the sex was of no more consequence than changing the sheets. And plot. Was there a plot? There were several different story lines and sometimes they converged but mostly, they diverged. I really don't mind characters with active sex lives, but I would like a real story with character development and emotional depth. Will I read the next one? Probably, but if the series continues like this book, I'll be finished with Stuart Woods.
Disaster in Old New York.......2007-06-03
Stone Barrington fans are legion, but this episode is flat. It doesn't have the sparkle one expects from Mr. Woods.
"Fresh Disasters" maybe the result of deadlines, publishing contract demands, or even editor manipulations with eyes on what's selling, but it is isn't the Stone Barrington we respect and admire.
The mattress gymnastics have the reader saying come-on Mr. Woods, "You can do better than this."
If you are new to Stuart Woods, with a fantastic talent for storytelling, go to the beginning and read "New York Dead". Then follow Stone and his buddies through the series, it is an excellent reading adventure.

What is Wrong With Stone?.......2007-05-30
These books are a fast read and the characters are predictable. I don't fault if for that, but in my opinion, at least the earlier books had a plot and some suspense. Lately, the books seem to be more about how many women Stone can have sex with and it amazes me how he does this without the other women ever finding out about each other. There was one major event in this book that should have had a powerful impact on Stone, but didn't seem to bother him much at all. There was some humor with Herbie, the guy that is sueing the mob. Dino seemed rather insensitive when it came to women in this book too. On a side note, safe sex is never mentioned in Stone's exploits. It is a wonder he isn't suffering from a sexually transmitted disease by now.
For fans of the book, read it. It is light and fast, just not up to previous installments in my opinion.
This is vintage Stuart Woods.......2007-05-30
Stuart Woods has the perfect job. Writing novels featuring Stone Barrington must be the most fun an author can imagine. Stone is classy, humorous, sarcastic, well dressed, well educated, rich, handsome, single and well heeled. It is a given that Stone will get into deep trouble without asking for it.
In FRESH DISASTERS, Stone puts himself in harm's way more times than I can count. A bonus is that we have the opportunity to eat and drink with the stars at Elaine's, and with Elaine herself, almost nightly at Stone's expense. Stone owns a boat, a plane, a special armored car, an island in Maine, an apartment in New York and a getaway country home in Washington, Connecticut. What a life!
The main plot features the nephew of a friend of Stone's. Herbie Fisher owes the mob $24,000 in gambling debts, and crime boss Carmine Datilla's underlings try to recover their "loan" in myriad ways, none of which are gentle or subtle. At one point, Stone's ego gets him in trouble as he attempts to serve a warrant to Datilla and manages to get himself thrown out a plate glass window. He doesn't take rejection well and seeks revenge. When Bernie Finger, Datilla's lawyer, gets involved, Stone really shows what he's made of.
Massage also plays a relevant role here. Stone meets two masseurs, and they both provide interesting subplots. He becomes acquainted with one of them at Elaine's over dinner. When he schedules a massage and she doesn't show up, Stone starts looking into her credentials. Seeking a replacement masseur, he comes across a more interesting and alluring (as well as statuesque) woman, Celia, with whom he develops a relationship. Of course, there is more to Celia than meets the eye. Her former boyfriend, an art gallery owner, is relentlessly fixed on hurting anyone who associates themselves with Celia. Stone feels his wrath in the form of a car bumper, though he does manage to get his revenge in a very funny scene in Connecticut.
The first masseur, Marilyn, offers to alleviate Stone's pain from his plate glass window adventure. Unbeknownst to Stone when he hired her, she turns out to be the mistress of Bernie Finger, the mob lawyer. Looking to be the second Mrs. Bernard Finger, Marilyn keeps Bernie very happy. Her Bernie-paid penthouse has a balcony, which can be seen by anyone in the vicinity who has a higher vantage point. Apparently, Bernie and Marilyn like to frolic outdoors occasionally. Stone takes advantage of this opportunity to help Bernie make up his mind about the lawsuit on his client, Carmine Datilla. It's amazing what a few well-shot photos can produce!
This is vintage Stuart Woods. He has developed Stone Barrington so well that readers who are acquainted with his writing appreciate him more with each book.

Customer Reviews:
Classic Technical Analysis Book.......2007-06-28
I received 4 copies of this book during my course work at the NYIF, its an excellent referance manual for anyone applying Technical Analysis to the financial markets.
Excellent introduction to TA - an easy read.......2007-06-27
This is the first book I bought on TA and, honestly, it looked intimidating. It's not. Open it up and it reads cover to cover very quickly. Not too technical - not too basic. Just right. This is an excellent introduction to technical analysis: easy to read language, large print, nice heavy bright white pages. Oh, and the content is excellent as well: worded well, good organization, understandable examples and illustrations.
What works in the short term market.......2007-06-03
I am a firm believer of using technical analysis when considering investing for the short term. To me a short term investing ranges anywhere from a few months to a year. I invest mostly in the commodity market, particularly gold and silver, and get amazed with the regularity with which I see meltdown in these markets. There were, three I think, in the year 2006, one or two in 2007 and there will be more in the coming years. The fundamentals are all good for these markets, but there is no running away form liquidations in these markets. The one in 2006 was apparently precipitated by $6.6 billion blow-up of Amaranth hedge fund. The summer 2006 meltdown in emerging markets also seemed to had a correlated move in the commodities market.
Relying on fundamentals alone can get one trapped in the markets which are undergoing serious corrections. A safer investing is when one listens to what market is trying to tell, this is where this book helps. I highly recommend this book!!
A Well Written Introduction to Technical Analysis.......2007-05-30
I found this book to be analogous to a college primer on a subject. In this instance it is T.A. The book is broad based. The author has cited several potential books for further in depth studies in areas of specific interest to the analyst. I used the study guide with the book for feedback and conceptual reinforcement. While I do not believe a serious knowledge base can be built with only one book, this book lays a fine foundation to build on.
a must have if you are entering the markets.......2007-05-19
i have a solid collection of books regrding the financial markets, and this book by far has to be the best.i have searched high and low for easy to read, and understandable books regarding technical analysis. this one is it, if i had brought this book first i would have not brought the 8 previous books i have regarding the subject, especially if you are looking at entering the forex market....this book means millions of dollars in the bank too me

Book Description
The phenomenal series set in a future New York City returns as NYPSD Lt. Eve Dallas hunts for the killer of a seemingly ordinary history teacher-and uncovers some extraordinary surprises. Craig Foster's death devastated his young wife, who'd sent him to work that day with a lovingly packed lunch. It shocked his colleagues at the private school, too, and as for the ten-year-old girls who found him in his classroom in a pool of bodily fluids-they may have been traumatized for life.
Eve soon determines that Foster's homemade lunch was tainted with deadly ricin, and that Mr. Foster's colleagues have some startling secrets of their own. It's Eve's job to sort it out- and discover why someone would have done this to a man who seemed so inoffensive, so pleasant . . . so innocent.
Now Magdalena Percell . . . there's someone Eve can picture as a murder victim. Possibly at Eve's own hands. The slinky blonde-an old flame of her billionaire husband, Roarke-has arrived in New York, and she's anything but innocent. Roarke seems blind to Magdalena's manipulation, and he insists that the occasional lunch or business meeting with her is nothing to worry about . . . and none of Eve's business. Eve's so unnerved by the situation that she finds it hard to focus on her case. Still, she'll have to put aside her feelings, for a while at least-because another man has just turned up dead.
Eve knows all too well that innocence can be a faade. Keeping that in mind may help her solve this case at last. But it may also tear apart her marriage.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best In Death novels she's written..........2007-06-24
Another episode of being a NY copy in 2060 with Lieutenant Eve Dallas... Innocent In Death by J. D. Robb. An excellent installment that does a deep dive into the emotional bond between Rourke and Dallas, as well as solving a crime or two along the way.
Dallas is called out to investigate a death at a private school. A teacher's been poisoned, and on the surface there's no decent reason as to why. All of her leads are coming up blank, and the people who would have cause and means aren't causing her radar to activate. Some deeper digging into rumors leads her towards a fellow teacher that might have a reason to kill off his colleague, but before Dallas can close in on that angle, he is also murdered. This opens up the "who did it" derby a couple of other people, but again it's all circumstantial. Only at the end do the actions and events start falling into a unthinkable pattern than no one wants to accept as possible.
And on the personal front, Rourke is visited by an old flame and partner-in-crime. She's everything Eve is not, and Eve is feeling more than a little threatened. Regardless of how much Rourke tries to reassure her that she's the only one, Dallas can't let it go. And like most men, Rourke is totally blind to the manipulation that's putting his marriage to Dallas in jeopardy. It takes a major crisis, and some unwanted words from Summerset, to finally clue him into the truth.
I liked Innocent more than many of the recent editions of the series, and that's saying a lot (as I've read and loved them all). The crime plot was truly a mystery, and I had no idea how it was going to play out in the end. But the personal side was very well done. It was nice to see some cracks in Rourke's normally unshakable image, and it was also good to see Dallas actually have to express emotions that she normally buries and hides. As with most of the In Death books, this one didn't last nearly long enough for my tastes. But knowing the rate at which Nora Roberts is able to crank these out (without losing her edge, either), I shouldn't have to wait too long for the next one.
Secrets, scandals and unseemly behavior in the elite New York City private school .......2007-05-30
After Craig Foster, a well-liked teacher in an exclusive private school, dies while eating lunch in his classroom, New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas is dispatched to the school to investigate. The forensic evidence discloses the cause of Foster's painful death. Trace elements of a lethal dose of Ricin poisoning are discovered in the cup containing his hot chocolate, which, like the rest of his meal, was prepared by his wife, who immediately becomes the first suspect.
While the forensic evidence quickly reveals what led to Foster's death, the answers to the questions of opportunity, method and motive --- who poisoned him, how they pulled it off and why they did it --- prove illusive.
Eve's investigation into the murder uncovers secrets, scandals and unseemly behavior in the elite New York City private school where Foster taught and met his untimely death. Foster's wife, the school's headmistress, teachers, parents, employees and even the students are potential suspects. As the list begins to grow, so do the possible motives for wanting the popular teacher dead. Eve's progress in closing the case is hampered by the legal posturing and interference of a high-powered defense attorney whose daughter is a student at the school and one of the two girls who discovered the lifeless Foster.
Before long, the body of another teacher, who initially was considered a primary suspect in Foster's poisoning, is discovered floating in the school's pool. What on the surface appears to be an accidental drowning turns out to be another murder. With the death of the main suspect, Eve re-examines her original suspicions and begins to think the unthinkable.
Complicating matters, on the home front, Eve's marriage is strained when a mysterious woman from her husband Roarke's past suddenly reappears. Sophisticated, elegant and drop-dead gorgeous, Magdelana Percell bumps into Eve and Roarke at an upscale restaurant. After the "chance" encounter, Magdelana tries to reconnect with Roarke. Magdelana's deceptive and cruel attempts to get Roarke to stray threaten to destroy Eve's happiness.
In trying to solve the murders and save her marriage, Eve is forced to cope with memories that bedevil her past while coming to grips with a shocking truth about human nature that is almost too painful to comprehend.
Without flinching, INNOCENT IN DEATH stares straight-on into the face of evil --- no matter what form it takes. The romantic interludes and playful humor between Eve and Roarke help lighten some of the darker elements that surround the basic murder mystery. In the end, this latest entry in J.D. Robb's In Death series examines the steps some people will take to feed their appetites, safeguard their reputations and maintain their lifestyles --- and what others will do to protect the innocent, defend their loved ones and face down their deepest fears.

I so totally enjoyed this book! The emotions that Eve and Roarke shared in this story were awesome! I have read it twice over and will probably read it again soon!
The Most Emotional Eve Dallas Story Yet.......2007-05-14
I've said before that the "...IN DEATH" series by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) is my all-time favorite series, and after 24 books, that still holds true.
With INNOCENT IN DEATH, I spent as much time crying over the emotional disturbance between my favorite couple, Eve Dallas and Roarke, as I did trying to find out who committed the crimes.
When a likeable, all-around good guy teacher at a private school ends up dead, poisoned by ricin in his hot chocolate, the school is in shock. Eve immediately realizes that not all is at it seems at the school; that everyone, from the principal, to the other teachers, to the students, and to their parents have things they'd rather keep hidden.
While trying to solve the murder of Craig Foster, and the subsequent death of yet another teacher, Eve must deal with the emotional roller-coaster of the reappearance of one of Roarke's old flames. And unlike the majority of women from Roarke's past, Magdelena Purcell is a woman that Roarke never forgot.
As one passage states, when Magdelena informs Eve that Roarke didn't leave her, but that it happened the other way around, both women know that that small distinction makes all the difference.
INNOCENT IN DEATH is one of my new favorites in the series. Not only was the mystery an interesting and compelling one (with a suspect that I didn't see coming), but the true, deep emotions of my favorite couple made this a real winner. Thankfully, everything worked itself out in the end, and my heart, along with Eve's, is finally feeling lighter.
Much Better than the Last Couple.......2007-05-14
In this 24th story in the "in Death" series, future New York homicide cop Eve Dallas investigates the poisoning murder of a popular young teacher at a classy elementary school. There is intrigue within the school, including a teacher who prides himself on bedding his coworkers and students' parents, and a principal who seemingly would do anything to preserve her school's reputation.
Eve's private life is also in turmoil--a former partner in crime of her husband, Roarke, is in town and seems determined to win back his attention and to cause problems in their marriage. Eve is shocked and hurt to see something between Roarke and this woman that she thought only existed for her and Roarke. Could she be losing her hold on her love?
This book had the spark I like so much from J.D. Robb's earlier books. She was able to focus both on the interesting investigation into the murder and also on Eve's difficult interpersonal relationships. Roarke and Eve's relationship continues in its complexity, although I felt that their fight was perhaps a bit drawn out and based on a silly misunderstanding. Overall, though, this book was much more satisfying than the last couple.

Not a profound review........2007-06-15
Not a classic, but I liked it.
Pretentious and unlikable.......2007-06-06
Perhaps I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate it but this book simply felt pretentious to me. It was a Gatsby wannabe and, in truth, I really didn't sympathize with or identify with any of the characters. After reading all the rave reviews, I was very disappointed. I picked it up because I have such a passion for Fitzgerald and when I was finished with it I was really surprised by the comparisons as, in my opinion, Messud doesn't even come close to holding a candle to Fitzgerald.
A true masterpiece .......2007-06-04
I am stunned by other reviews. The genius of this book is that it allows us to see ourselves from a not so flattering prospective. Is this the reason for angry reviews?
This book is a true masterpiece and a brilliant portrayal of our modern lives. It is a must for any intelligent reader.
Not the 9/11 book I expected........2007-05-31
As a native New Yorker, and one who lived in New York at the time this story takes place,I am sadden by the characters of Messud's book. At a time when we all proved how New Yorkers pull together in a crisis, in Messud's World we are all self absorbed and uncaring individuals. Not since 'Bonfires of the Vanities' have I read a book with such miserable characters.
It is sad the someone with such talent wasted it on this novel.
Fascinating and (in the end) Mesmerizing.......2007-05-30
This is a wonderful book -- some of the other reviews here notwithstanding. Yes, it presents an elite and precious world (hence, the title) from multiple points of view, and it does take some work to get into. But the reader should not give up on it on the basis of the first three or four chapters. The second half of the novel, which weaves the events of 9/11 into a complex meditation on love and identity, is also seriously gripping in its control over plot and suspense.
Messud inhabits the perspectives of her various characters -- Murray, Annabel, and Marina Thwaite; Julian Clarke; Danielle Minkoff; Bootie Tubb -- with a transformative blend of irony and sympathy. Miraculously the reader comes to care passionately about what becomes of them, while simultaneously understanding them as overly sophisticated and even vacuous. The "truth" that these people passionately espouse emerges as at once an illusion and an ideal worth all our trouble. I loved it, and was sorry when it was over.

In this fanciful volume, Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, founder of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.), both analyzes and celebrates New York City. By suggesting the city as the site for an infinite variety of human activities and events--both real and imagined--the essence of the metropolitan lifestyle, its "culture of congestion" and its architecture are revealed in a brilliant new light. "Manhattan," Koolhaas writes, "is the 20th century's Rosetta stone . . . occupied by architectural mutations (Central Park, the Skyscraper), utopian fragments (Rockefeller Center, the U.N. Building), and irrational phenomena (Radio City Music Hall)." Filled with fascinating facts, as well as photographs, postcards, maps, watercolors, and drawings, the vibrancy of Koolhaas's poignant exploration of Gotham equals the heady, frenetic energy of the city itself. Anyone who loves New York will want to own this book.
Customer Reviews:
What an interesting philosophical dissertation.......2007-02-05
through the exhaustive historiography of the phases of congestion coney island brought to manhattan, koolhaas provides a rather cynical view of the Grid as being an ulimatley neutral zoning system of constraining ideas that represent the continual decline of a phantastically realistic civilization, represented as mutated symbols of architecture in the "void" of repeated "pregnancies."
it's really well written. funny. uses, like above, a somewhat inefficient vocabulary but remains in the same vein throughout. it is also a graphic design hubris consuming every page, even the left-justified text, showing off koolhaas's interpretation of the importance to combine scholarship and marketing.
buy it. it's a very good book.
Way Too Much To Think About Sometimes.... .......2006-11-09
A very inventive concept of New York's "culture of congestion" and how people are affected by the architecture they create. It is heavily researched and exhaustive, and after pretty much the third page I agreed with his concept of NY being "totally fabricated by man". What could of been a fascinating article becomes a spastic, heavy-handed read with a sledgehammer effect to your brain. (However, for those of us reading it for school, there are plenty of pictures that fill up the almost devastatingly vast 300+pages quickly.) It will scramble your brain with its thousands of nearly bumper-stickerish statements ("It hides life." "The Mountain MUST become architecture.") written with pretentious glee. However, I believe an independent scientific study has concluded that when pretending to read this book on the train people around you will assume your IQ is 40% higher than truth.
Eating oysters with boxing gloves, naked, on the nth floor........2005-05-25
The quote written above is excerpted from Delirious New York. It is a perfect example of the lyrical quality of the writing prevalent throughout this amazing book. Delirious New York is not an objective chronological listing of New York's development, but a collection of manifestos and stories with opinionated perspectives about a city founded on the idea that maximum congestion is a desirable factor. It is informative, funny (the midget firefighters of Coney Island had me laughing aloud for a solid minute or two), twisted, and inspiring.
Rem Koolhaas is edgier and far more interesting literary figure in architecture than say, Le Corbusier. Koolhaas's analytical yet shockingly refreshing writing style is a blessing for architecture, since he stays away from academic incoherent writing style that most architectural historians and architects tend to employ.
Get a copy of this book if eclectic (and at times disturbing) tales of architecture and urban development is something you think you will enjoy.
best koolhaas ever, man.......2004-01-30
koolhaas is a bit over-the-top for me, but this I think is is best work. it's worth checking out if only for the story of coney island. once you get past blisteringly pretentious phrases like "coney island is a fetal manhattan", you'll find it gloriously entertaining as both a narrative and theoretical work.
the culture of congestion.......2002-12-24
This is by far Koolhaas's most accessible work, as it is rooted so clearly in detail from the city's past. Further, the book is simply brilliant. His take on urban history is to Jane Jacobs what Socrates is to common sense. New York is a special case of modernism that sprang from a special constellation of poltiical and technological forces that collectively create a cultural "big-bang" at the turn of the century. Read it. Blow your mind.

Wicked Book Review.......2007-05-14
GREAT book, GREAT details and excellent overview of the play. Good/Fun coffee table book - everytime I sit down I pick it up and find something new.
Anything but grim - in fact a real delight!.......2007-05-13
Being an Australian and with only access to the broadway cast album of Stephen Schwartz's "Wicked" . . . .the show has yet to make it to Oz (Australia that is, not the magical...... you know what I mean). I was more than eager to know more of this smash hit. "The Grimmerie" does not disappoint. Hard cover with a purposely "distressed" binding, this over 192 page book abounds with vivid color shots of the production, profiles of the characters by the actors who starred and most helpful for one who is yet to enjoy the show face to face, a condensed script linking the lyrics of each song. Whether you've seen the show, have only caught the cast album, or just heard on the grapevine; The Grimmerie, a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Hit Broadway Musical is a must have.

Fans of Augusten Burroughs's darkly funny memoir Running with Scissors were left wondering at the end of that book what would become of young Augusten after his squalid and fascinating childhood ended. In Dry, we find that although adult Augusten is doing well professionally, earning a handsome living as an ad writer for a top New York agency, Burroughs's personal life is a disaster. His apartment is a sea of empty Dewar's bottles, he stays out all night boozing, and he dabs cologne on his tongue in an unsuccessful attempt to mask the stench of alcohol on his breath at work. When his employer insists he seek help, Burroughs ships out to Minnesota for detoxification, counseling, and amusingly told anecdotes about the use of stuffed animals in group therapy. But after a month of such treatment, he's back in Manhattan and tenuously sober. And while its one thing to lay off the sauce in rehab, Burroughs learns that it's quite another to resume your former life while avoiding the alcohol that your former life was based around. This quest to remain sober is made dramatically more difficult, and the tale more harrowing, when Burroughs begins an ill-advised romance with a crack addict. Certainly the "recovered alcoholic fighting to stay sober" tale is not new territory for a memoirist. But Burroughs's account transcends clichés: it doesn't adhere to the traditional "temptation narrowly resisted" storyline and it features, in Burroughs himself, a central character that is sympathetic even when he's neither likable nor admirable. But what ultimately makes this memoir such a terrific read is a brilliant and candid sense of humor that manages to stay dry even when recalling events where the author was anything but. --John Moe
Book Description
From the bestselling author of Running with Scissors comes Dry-the hilarious, moving, and no less bizarre account of what happened next You may not know it, but you've met Augusten Burroughs. You've seen him on the street, in bars, on the subway, at restaurants: a twenty-something guy, nice suit, works in advertising. Regular. Ordinary. But when the ordinary person had to drinks, Augusten was circling the drain by having twelve; when the ordinary person went home at midnight, Augusten never went home at all. Loud, distracting ties, automated wake-up calls, and cologne on the tongue could only hide so much for so long. At the request (well, it wasn't really a request) of his employers, Augusten landed in rehab, where his dreams of group therapy with Robert Downey, Jr., are immediately dashed by the grim reality of fluorescent lighting and paper hospital slippers. But when Augusten is forced to examine himself, something actually starts to click, and that's when he finds himself in the worst trouble of all. Because when his thirty days are up, he has to return to his same drunken Manhattan lifeand live it sober. What follows is a memoir that's as moving as it is funny, as heartbreaking as it is real. Dry is the story of love, loss, and Starbucks as a higher power.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Read for Those in Recovery........2007-06-26
As a proud member of AA, I must say that this is a good read. I knew nothing of Burroughs work, and picked this book up on the simple fact that I liked the books discription on the back cover. Burroughs does well in explaining the sickness of the alcoholics mind, and you get the feel of listening in to a lead speaker of an AA meeting.
The end of happy hour.......2007-06-01
"Dry" picks up shortly after author Augusten Burroughs's memoir "Running with Scissors" left off. After escaping the childhood from hell and relocating to New York City, Augusten lands a posh job at an advertising agency where he excels at his craft and earns a six-figure salary. However, despite his professional success, Augusten's personal life is one of loneliness and drunken despair. He stays out drinking until the wee hours of the morning, and his alcoholism eventually begins affecting his performance at work. Augusten's coworkers finally intervene and force him to admit himself into a gay rehabilitation center. "Dry" chronicles Augusten's experience in rehab and his struggle to remain sober once he returns to the outside world. This memoir also chronicles Augusten's challenging relationships with various friends and lovers (including a sexy, rich crack addict), and Augusten discovers additional weaknesses and fears that he has yet to come to terms with.
I love Augusten's blunt honesty and sarcastic sense of humor. His story isn't a happy one by any stretch of the imagination, but he always manages to find dry humor in just about everything and isn't afraid to make fun of himself. (I love his crazy rehab stories most of all. The bit with the "Monkey Wonkey" song is hilarious! However, isn't the rule supposed to be that "what happens in rehab stays in rehab?" I guess not, or at least not in this case. Ha!) However, all jokes aside, "Dry" is also a very poignant story about alcoholism, friendship, and love. I recommend this book to everyone.
My first and favorite.......2007-05-31
Though I'd owned Running with Scissors for a long time, this was the first Augusten Burroughs I read all the way through. I'm in love with his writing and anxiously await his next book.
Funny and Tragic.......2007-05-19
This memoir is both entertaining and insightful. The author does a great job of illustrating the dark world his alcoholism pulled him into, yet he also sees the humor in situations which makes it laugh-out-loud funny at times. Fast-paced read. Tragic, yet funny. Through all his self-destructive behaviors, I found myself really rooting for Augusten.
Obnoxious and Pointless..........2007-05-14
It was an interesting read at first, but later on, I was disappointed with the writer's anti-Semitic remarks and his degrading language against other cultures and faiths. Not to mention the unnecessary chapters of erotica. I was looking for something inspiring and motivating, unfortunately, this was the wrong book.
