Customer Reviews:
Totally Trust Rick Steves.......2007-06-14
I used Rick Steve's throughout Germany and Belgium and his tips and recommendations were spot on. We are now planning a trip to Italy and Croatia and I am once again, using his money & time saving tips, and recommendations on where to stay.
If you want to be simply a tourist, then Rick Steve's is not for you. If you want to truly experience a culture and have a great time then use his book.
This guide has exactly what you need.......2007-06-06
I've been to Europe 3 times and used National Geographic, Eyewitness and now Rick Steves. Except for the pretty pictures in the other two, they just don't compare to Rick's guide.
If your not familiar with Rick's guids here is the difference: They are written from the point of view of a real traveler.
This guide tells you (in ricks opinion and/or his staff) what's worth seeing, how to get there, where to stay, where to eat. Second it goes so far as to give hours, email, phone and real prices (as well as comments like "overly perfumed rooms") for every hotel/restaurant in the book. This is exactly the insight you need when your showing up in a foreign country and a big step above the generic information found in other guides.
I highly recommend that if you're going to buy this book, you do it before you book a single thing on your trip.
Good Guide.......2007-05-28
I visited Croatia and Slovenia with this guide and one other. This was the best.
Our guide to an incredible vacation.......2007-05-28
I just got back from a trip to Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro planned by my wife using this book. The sites, restaurants, and lodging recommended by Steves are exactly how he describes them: interesting and affordable. Exactly what we were looking for.
If you're looking for tips on hot night-life scenes or a hostel hopping trip, this isn't the book for you. It's more for people who enjoy great food, comfortable and clean hotels, and learning about the history and culture of areas they visit.
Time Saver.......2007-05-13
This book will enable us to see the best of Croatia and what we want to see. Rick Steve's sound advice and travel tips are a MUST for all travlers. I've relied on his books before and consider it THE source for any region.

Good map.......2006-09-20
This map is much better than the Croatia Travel Map (Globetrotter Travel Map). This map is more detailed (1:500,000), shows more (includes Slovenia and parts of neighboring countries), shows the mountain ranges, and national parks, etc.

Customer Reviews:
Could be far better.......2006-06-08
I bought this book thinking that it would be convenient to have both countries in one book. A chapter or two in Let's Go wasn't going to do the trick for a jaunt to Croatia and Slovenia, and the idea of carting two books around didn't interest me. That being said, it might just be worth it.
The book is poorly organized. The bulk of the information is on Croatia, and it doesn't provide some information that I consider critical such as train lengths or often even basic prices for hotels (let alone some form of currency converter). Frustrating as well is the fact that while Fodor's tells you about the food in Slovenia in a separate section, you have to hunt around for Croatian food. It's typical of the whole book that the two countries are shoved together without any sense of organization or equity.
There's some good information in here, but given a second chance, I would have spent a little more money and purchased two solid books (i.e. Lonely Planet) instead of one mediocre book.

Customer Reviews:
A great look at the Yugoslav conflict........2005-12-20
Personally, I think that Misha Glenny is one of the best writers on the Balkans. I have spent three years living in the Balkans so I know something about the area. I highly recommend reading his work The Balkans first as it gives great insight into the region. However, if you are only interested in the war than this work can certainly stand alone. The book chronicles events from August 1990 to June 1993. In addition, an epilogue was added in 1996. While it does not cover the most recent aftermath for the time it covers the book is excellent.
Glenny obviously understands the Balkan mentality and adroitly discusses many of the errors that the international community made in dealing with the conflict. In addition, he made some accurate predictions and warnings. In particular he discusses his concern about Macedonia in the epilogue written in 1996. Fighting broke out briefly in 2001 and security remains an issue. Glenny's experience as a correspondent for the BBC gave him the opportunity to interview all the most important players and his writing makes his work accessible to the larger populace. This is the best book on the war.
A very good account of what happened in the Balkans.......2005-04-26
Misha Glenny's book offers a really good account of the forces which shaped the Balkan conflict. I have a much clearer idea now of the causes of the conflict, and of the various turning points and missed opportunities. This book seems very unbiased. The author seems apalled by the crimes that take place, but does not focus on attempting to list or catalog them. I do think that you will need another book to fully understand the high-level forces at work (US. UN, NATO, etc.) Perhaps Death of a Nation by Laura Silber (which I haven't read). Deliver Us From Evil, by William Shawcross does a really good job of explaining those things in the context of other events happening at the same time (Somalia, Rwanda, etc.). Also, Glenny's book is a bit dense, so it's not exactly an easy read
Uninterestingly Interesting...............2005-03-21
I find it Unintelligently interesting how the world are now masters at our own history, especially the English,
and now know all about the Balkans.
You read a book or two, and believe you know what's right and and what's not.
It's obvious who the culprits were, though as time progressed within the situation, is when all 3 became relatively equal, especially with certain powers in control of their respective governments.
Misha Glenny did well with his Balkan book. Although, I've read this book over and over, he's had the tenacity and ability for a reader to lose interest within the introduction itself. Unless, one doesn't have a proper understanding of what Ex-Jugoslavija was all about.
Mr.Glenny, don't show your biasim so early in a book. Get your message across in an appropriate form of language with the reader still holding that book.
No love lost for being a Pro-Srb, their masters at 'Propaganda'!
Ex-Crni Gorac
Not a good book...at all.......2001-12-10
I was looking for an overview of the balkan conflict. This book does not offer that. It does not give someone without a great deal of prior knowledge a good historical reference for what led to war. I feel like the author of this book assumes the reader is extremely familiar with the conflict and decided to write a book sharing some of his personal experiences that coincided with major events in the conflict. The chapters severely lack coordination. As somebody else mentions it goes into way too much detail about insignificant figures. I also purchased "Yugoslavia, Death of a Nation". Though I've only finished the introduction and first chapter I already feel like I've learned more than after completion of "The Fall of Yugoslavia". Maybe after completing "Death of a Nation" going back through "The Fall of Yugoslavia" might be interesting, doubt it though...
Eastern Europe Lover.......2001-07-08
Absolutely stunning. This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the Balkans. Mishy Glenny's account of this last decade was captivating from beginning to end, (despite the small print). I would describe it as a real eyeopener for someone who's only familiarity with this area was the second world war and what the media told us during the 90's.

Book Description
Following the death of the Yugoslavian strongman President Tito in 1980, the several semi-autonomous republics and provinces that he had welded into a nation in 1945 moved inexorably towards separation. After a deceptively clean break for independence by Slovenia in 1991, the world watched a series of other wars rip through this modern European state. In this first of two volumes, experts on the Balkan region give an unprecedentedly clear, concise explanation of the Slovene, Croatian and Krajina-Serb armies of these campaigns, illustrated with rare photos and an extraordinary range of colour uniform plates.

Book Description
Bored with the daily grind and keen to escape the rat-race, Hazel and Simon Jackson did what so many dream of - they sold their house and possessions, bought a motor home, took their thirteen year old son out of school and travelled Europe. They left winter behind and for the next year they barbecued on beaches, skied on mountains, swam in warm seas and danced at fiestas.
Encountering everything from Spanish hospitals, and the Guardia Civil when they were robbed in Spain - to being ripped off in Rome, propositioned in Sicily, dazzled in Dubrovnik, and almost drowned in Slovenia... they wild-camped their way through southern Europe, in a motor home affectionately known as The Beast.
They slept, ate and lived in a different place almost every day, meeting locals off the beaten track, making new, lasting friendships... and shared it all with their teenage son Jack.
If you enjoy travel and need to be re-assured that you aren't the only ones who break-down, get lost, or stuck in impossible situations, then this is the book for you. Join them as they travel for a year through Europe, from the luxury of your arm-chair.
Brimming with useful tips and historical information, this is a book full of humour, catastrophes and everything else that comes with life on the road.
It is a dream come true.

The group with which I was traveling drove by minibus the entire length of the Croatian coast and then cruised in a chartered sailboat out of Dubrovnik along the Dalmation Coast as far as Split. The Michelin map was excellent, providing detailed data using attractive cartography.

Book Description
As the Second World War drew to a close, European borders were being redrawn. The regions of Istria, Dalmatia, and Venezia Giulia, nominally Italian but at various times also belonging to Austria and Germany, fell under the rule of Yugoslavia and its dictator Marshal Tito. The ensuing removal and genocide of Italians from these regions had been little explored or even discussed until 1999, when the esteemed Italian journalist Arrigo Petacco wrote L'esodo: La tragedia negata degli italiani d'Istria, Dalmazia e Venezia Giulia. Now this story is available in English as A Tragedy Revealed.
Petacco explains the history of the regions and how they were shifted between empires for centuries. The greater part of the story however details the genocidal program of the Yugoslav Communist government toward the native Italians in the regions. Based on previously unavailable archival documents and oral accounts from people who were there, Petacco reveals the events and exposes the Italian government's mishandling - and then official silence on - the situation. This is a riveting work on a little-known, tragic event written by one of Italy's most highly regarded journalists.
