Book Description
Anyone concerned about the health effects of ingredients in the items they buy every day -- from soup to flea powder, mascara, or car wax -- will find The Safe Shopper's Bible indispensable. Finally, here's a complete guide to settle such questions as: Can your hair coloring cause breast cancer? Is this brand of apple juice safe for babies? Will the additives in this salad dressing harm you? Which shampoo won't sting your eyes? The Safe Shopper's Bible rates thousands of household products, personal care products, foods, and beverages. Its extensive charts list products by brand name and rate them each for short-term and long-term health hazards. Readers can find out at a glance which products are more or less likely to provoke allergies or irritation, cause birth defects or cancer, trigger neurological problems, or pose other health hazards. In addition, the charts provide recommendations for the safest foods, toiletries, and everyday household purchases.

The safe shopper's bible.......2007-06-27
I really liked this book...just wish that more of the more recent products were listed. do you have an updated version?
I did find this book very helpful. Started me on a huge research project with all this environmental home remedies. Thanks!
Must Have.......2007-06-02
Outstanding source. This is a must have for those that are committed to improving their quality of life, and personal commitment to health and wellness.
Outdated!.......2007-05-16
I was so looking forward to this book, but when it arrived, I was soon disappointed. The copyright is at least 10 years old and most of the products are no longer available at the stores. What a waste. Why Amazon still sells this, is beyond me.
Praying for an Updated Version.......2007-02-22
This was the book that started me on my long journey to a healthier life. I couldn't put it down. I have had this book for a few years now and even though it is 12 years old, it still has a ton of useful information. Manufacturers are still using the same horrible chemicals not fit for man nor beast. The product lists are a little outdated and I would like to see him be a little tougher on some of them, but it is a great start in giving someone an idea of what to watch out for and where to start looking. I go back to this book time and time again to see what he has to say about a particular chemical or where to start looking for a safer alternative product. Many companys change their ingredients all the time so watch out for things that you start to use and check ingredients periodically for the toxins, I have caught a few. I keep looking for a revised version of this book, hoping and praying it magically will be here someday!
The Safe Shoppers Bible.......2006-11-13
No home should be without this book if you care about what you and your family eat

New York, New York, it's an edible town. The soul food's up and the knishes are down. In New York Eats (More), Ed Levine tells where to find the best of both, and of every other gustatory possibility this melting-pot city has to offer.
In this update of the original New York Eats (1992), Levine adds 200 entries. In all, he covers stores in 15 neighborhoods in the five boroughs, spanning 30 ethnic groups.
Fair warning: Look up one entry and an hour later, you will still be reading. Levine's passion, sometimes controversial opinions, and ardent style are utterly compelling. Present and former New Yorkers can kiss off half a day every time they get near this book. And Levine now shares his e-mail address, so you can argue back and share your own favorites.
Die-hard ethnic foodies may notice one shortcoming in New York Eats (More). Some identities within major ethnic groups, such as Thai in the Asian entries, are missing. This may have happened because Levine does not cover restaurants. When this shortcoming is remedied, as it no doubt will be in a future edition, this will be the ultimate, as well as the most exciting, New York food guide.--Dana Jacobi
Book Description
Where can you find the best bialy, brioche, burrito, butter crunch, bircj beer, barbecueed rib, or bruschetta in the Big Apple? The answers are in this amazing guide to finding the greatest food treasures in New York's dazzling bakeries, butchers, fish markets, produce stands, cheese shops, gourmet groceries, sandwich carts, spice emporia, kitchenware stores and specialty shops.
A lifelong nosher with an insatiable taste for adventure, Ed Levine has turned his quirky passion into a New York institution, tirelessly seeking out the freshest, most delicious, best-priced scallion pancake, pork sausage, smoked mozzerella, foie gras, Jamaican jerk chicken, key lime pie, cappuccino-brownie ice cream, strawberry lemonade, and just about everything else the city has to offer. This long-awaited revised edition includes: painstakingly detailed, up-to-the-minute coverage of all five boroughs (including expanded coverage of Brooklyn and Queens), an all-new section on the Hamptons, Ed's best-of-the-best restaurant picks, an incredibly complete directory of New York's ethnic markets (you won't know how you lived without it), and more.
Each listing is complete with subway, credit card, and mail-order information. Sidebars tell the stories of New York's colorful, hard-working food heroes.
From the gourmet to the everyday, the jubilant, comprehensive, fun-to-read guide will help both the seasoned and the seasonal New Yorker find the city's crem de la creme.
Customer Reviews:
Because of New York Eats I bought this book.......1999-12-21
Ed Levine is the host of a funny and very informative local New York restaurant and food review show called "New York Eats". I have repeatly sent in emails hoping to get a free copy of his book but to no avail. Alas I recently bought this book and it has helped me on many occasions. From finding the best pizza in NYC to the best take out fois gras. A indispensable gift for someone living in New York City and surrounding areas and even better for someone about to visit and they want to know where to get the best food in the best city on earth.
Comprehensive and entertaining - fun and useful.......1997-09-03
My copy of the previous edition of this book is dog-eared and worn because I use it so much as a guide, reference and and entertainment. Levine knows New York, food, and people. He knows his stuff but he's not snooty about it. He's as much at home writing about Gray's Papaya hot dogs as he is about the finest wines

The Thrift Highway.......2004-10-26
This is fun and fantastic resource. These girls love a good bargin, and they obviously have a knack for fact-checking. "Dirt Cheap Real Good" is full of helpful information -- and with a bevy of detailed directions to accompany the funny and personal anecdotes, it's the only road atlas you'll ever need.
These Ladies Know Thrifting! .......2004-08-21
I read this book assuming that, after 9 years living in the DC area, I would find summaries of my favorite haunts, and maybe scoff at outdated listings for a few that had closed. I did not expect, and was very happily surprised, to find mention of several newer shops, including a few nearby I didn't even know existed!
The book was obviously very thoroughly researched, and I'm sure they had a blast writing it. (Now, if only I had thought of it!)
Not just thrift stores!.......2004-08-05
You may purchase this guide looking for some stores to stop into, but what you'll find instead is the makings of a thrift vacation. The authors outline great roadtrips to surround the highlighted thrift stores, so you'll know where to stay and eat as you thrift your way around the mid-atlantic region. They even throw in some other activities besides thrifting in case you go into bargain-hunting overload. It's a pretty genius idea and a totally original take on road-tripping. I highly recommend picking this book up for a new perspective. Plus, they do give you all those great stores to stop into.
Dirt Cheap, Real Good is REAL GOOD.......2004-08-05
I bought DIRT CHEAP, REAL GOOD for a weekend trip to D.C. and I was blown away by the thorough research the authors had done on thrift shops in the area. They not only tell you where to go, but also include information about what to expect in terms of price, selection, and even atmosphere. The writing is lively and fun, and the book is illustrated with photos of many of the stores. This book is a gem for true connoisseurs of thrift stores and American popular culture.
A MUST FOR YOUR CAR and ROAD TRIP!.......2004-07-21
Dirt Cheap Real Good Rocks. I was visiting some friends in Philly and my friend was wearing a cool old IZOD(I had been dying to find some IZODs and Le Tigre vintage shirts). When I asked him where he got the shirt-he pulled out Dirt Cheap... and we spent THREE full days on tours of the Philly area thrift shops! I cleaned up!(now you can find some of those shirts on my ebay site) There were also cool insights to local eateries!! Now I have one in my car and have circled the next several trips.. They need to write one for every part of the U.S.!!

Customer Reviews:
Don't Go to Ireland Without This Book!.......2004-07-21
This a unique and most helpful book for the traveller to Ireland who is interested in coming home with more than the usual Aran sweater or piece of Waterford. Ireland is teeming with wonderful crafters making pottery, jewelry, linens, lace, leather goods, silver, and more - in addition to the familiar woolens and crystal. The authors show you how to find the small family workshops that are not on the tourist maps, as well as the major craft centers and shops. Some crafters will even give you a discount if you show them the book, making it a real bargain! Web site addresses are included for armchair shoppers, and there is a comprehensive list of Irish shops in the US (though no URLs for these). The authors' love of Ireland and its handicrafts comes through on every page. More photos would have been helpful, but this is really a one-of-a-kind book for the visitor to Ireland.
Book Description
Whether you're looking to buy or just looking, Everything Has Its Price is a beguiling reference for zealous shoppers and inquisitive browsers alike. Here are descriptions and prices for hundreds of items, from the extraordinary (bumpercar ride, heart transplant, ice sculpture) to the everyday (garbage truck, parking meter, automatic teller machine). Some are products you aren't likely to need (airplane tires: $3691.37), some are treasures most of us cannot afford (Monet's Water Lilies: $12.1 million), and some are things we hope not to need anytime soon (burial at sea: $70). All are intended to arouse and satisfy your curiosity, and they can be purchased for a price. From mannequins to monster trucks, from the cost of a wedding to the price of a divorce, you'll find it in this compulsively readable guide to almost everything you probably don't know the price of.
Amazon.com
At once a guidebook and a celebration of New York's greatest eating experiences, this enthusiastic book searches the boroughs of the Big Apple for more than 300 take-out places, from hot doughnuts to mozzarella, pad thai to pasta. Recipes, interviews, profiles and digressions make this a lavish gustatory read. The 19 sections on different food categories--appetizers, smoked fish, wine, and so on--are each broken down by neighborhood, and the descriptions of each restaurant or shop include information on deliveries, credit cards, catering and just about anything else that might be useful to know.
