Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, Deluxe Edition .......2007-05-15
This dictionary seems to be an excellent resource source. Highly recommended for students of all ages.
Webster's Unabridged Dictionary.......2007-03-07
As a medical student, I have found this to be an extremely valuable asset to my library. Some of the other students I know simply scoff at buying something like this, what with the Internet being the golden egg to so many. There are times though, that using a book for reference is not only functional, but also sometimes even easier, not to mention you don't have to second guess the information like you sometimes have to when pulling something from the internet. I have to find various times and places to study, and cannot always have easy access to a desktop computer or laptop. This 2,256-page behemoth is just that, it is a monster of a book. However, the durable make of it coupled with several ribbon markers makes it user friendly as well as fun! It is very in depth, having etymologies applied when necessary. It also has over 2,000 illustrations and beyond punctuation and spelling, also goes in depth with historical references so that you are not just finding the source of what you are looking for, but also the history of how it became that way. The medical terms found within are helpful and I have used this every day in some of my own research assignments. It is expensive, but considering that you are using it to better yourself in one form or another, I feel it is worth the price.
Convenience in a Weighty Package.......2007-01-16
This dictionary is a hefty 9-ish pounds, but that is actually a point of pride for me. I love to sit on my bed cross-legged and plop this hardcover in my lap, skimming through the delicate pages. If I'm looking for a specific word, the thumb indexing makes it very simple to navigate the 2,000+ pages. This dictionary is everything I ever wanted. I really enjoyed looking through the Proofreader's Marks (in the back, under the Basic Manual of Style). They make editing a peer's work a lot easier.
excellent quality highly recommended.......2007-01-13
I bought this book for my brother. He was thrilled with the quality and the binding. It was a good choice for what he was looking for. The level of diversity that the book had such as new words, etc. was a big plus. We had looked at the idea of an older unabridged book and decided the more modern options had a bigger plus for a book that would actually be used and not just sitting on the shelf. The reviews of others were very helpful in evaluating the merit of this wonderful book.
The ultimate dictionary.......2006-03-06
Webster's Unabridged Dictionary has every word imaginable in it. We have one in our sixth-grade classroom, and we often use it to look up words that aren't in our personal pocket dictionaries.
The binding is classic and elegant, and there are THREE marking ribbos.
There is things that might be fixed in the next edition, though. It would be good if the pages weren't so thin, because the pages are rather large and it's easy to tear whe you turn the pages.

Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, 2nd Edition.......2007-06-05
Love the book, but it is so heavy! Couldn't it be broken up into 2 books?
My mother is 86 & it hurts her to lift it.
Great dictionary!.......2007-05-30
As a writer, I love dictionaries, sometimes just to read them. Since I can't afford the unabridged OED, this is definitely the next best choice. Some others may be heavy, but you can still hold them in one hand. This one needs a table or desk so you can read page after page, and it's that heavy because it has so many more words! if you love words and can't afford the 20 volume OED, like me, you'll love this one!
Also deceived.......2007-05-19
I agree with "Katsnjabber" and "N. Thomas 'LibraryFiend'". I am so disappointed. I already had the 2nd edition, c2001. Then I saw notices of a 2nd "revised" edition dated 2005. I thought that if changes had been made, it should have been called the 3rd editon. But the 2005 date and the word "revised" confused me. So, I went ahead and ordered it and discovered to my disgust that it was the same as the one I already had! The copyright date on the verso of the title page was still 2001!
Another sucker
This Dictionary was published in 2002 NOT 2005.......2006-06-09
I bought this dictionary because of Random House's reputation AND because RH stated this 2005 edition is the most up-to-date reference work. This claim is one of several claims verified to be false. A RH staffer verified that this dictionary was published in 2002. The edition they sell now is the same exact book (republished/not re-edited in 2005). The next claim states that the front section of the book contains "NEW" words NOT listed in the main section nor introduced in previous edition. This claim is also false. "Agent", for example, is found in the "new words section" AND the main section. In addition, "agent" is not a new word at all. What's it doing in this new word section? A word such as "blog" (web log) should have been included in this new section. Since this dictionary is really from 2002, it is understandable - in hindsight - why it's not listed. This word was not used much, if at all, in 2002. It was easily recognized, however, in 2005. I would NOT have purchased this dictionary if I knew it was from 2002 NOT from 2005. I'm very disappointed at being defrauded.
No qualms about the content, but..........2006-03-02
I am trying to replace a previously "standard" edition of this dictionary - nice strong white paper and cloth bound - this edition is in a cheap paper cover and grayish newsprint-like paper. What used to be a $65 dollar execution is now apparently only available in a $ 130 de luxe version.

Four star content, minus two for poor binding........2002-12-02
This big, heavy, thick volume is quite a good choice for someone looking for a fairly recent (fully revised 1987, compared to the 1961 Webster's 3rd) unabridged dictionary. The "new words" section at the beginning is a nice feature, if not all that practical, covering lots of new technology terms up to the year 2001. Their choices are a bit haphazard - there's an entry for ACE inhibitors, but nothing for MAOI, SSRI, or proton-pump inhibitors. But the new words section is not the point; it's the rest of the text that matters. It covers just about every word from American English you'll ever need, plus a good number of geographical and biographical entries. So why the two star rating? When I received the book, the front cover binding was already torn and separating. I think Random House may have misstepped when they moved from oversize library cloth binding to 9 x 11 hardback. Maybe it was just a printer error, but I think the binding on this volume is just not enough to support the weight of 2,300 thick pages. In addition, the innermost print columns are too close to the inside binding, making 1/3 of the entries difficult to read. I commend Random House for making an unabridged dictionary available at this price point, but if the book can't hold its own weight, it isn't worth it. I'm exchanging mine for a copy of the New Oxford Dictionary of English (available at Amazon UK), which should cover just as many terms, plus international English, in a more manageable size. The New Oxford American Dictionary is a similar alternative for American English.
Go with Oxford........2002-09-23
The New Oxford American Dictionary is a much better choice.
Almost perfect...........2002-06-09
I've been using the dictionary for six months,it is the best Webster I've had so far. In contrast to other Websters I have, it gives many examples, has unique, clear usage notes, regional variations,at least two pronunciations at each entry. There is however a spelling mistake in the world"acqiure"-spelled"aquire" in the usage note at "gotten". I have found all the words I needed, but not all the meanings. At the entry "skite"the British meaning-'play hooky' is not given, but it is a dictionary of American English. It is very useful for the learners of English like myself. Phrasal verbs are in bold, all their meanings are given and the layout is clear.Using the book each time may really be time consuming, and the CD version does not include all the senses that are in the book.. still worth buying...
Great Unabridged Dictionary for the Money.......2002-03-14
I have only owned this book for a couple of months but have come to love this book so much more than my simple college dictionary. It is a little large but not as bad as one might think for an UNABRIDGED dictionary. The only drawback about this dictionary is that they list the new words in the beginning of the book instead of intergrading it into the bulk of the book. This seems like an awfully cheap way to update the dictionary without having to change the entire book. It wouldnýt be so bad but half the time I forget to reference this section when looking up a term. Overall this ia a must have for every home, especially any home with college students.

A really useful dictionary.......2007-05-10
This dictionary is by far the most useful of the several dictionaries I have used (including Merriam-Webster and the Oxford English Dictionary). I would give it 5 stars. The CD is quite good, but a little disappointing in some ways: It contains none of the useful pictures and maps that are in the dictionary, and it is very unforgiving of spelling mistakes. Nonetheless, I have used it a lot; in a small PC it is much more wieldy than the dictionary.
Old Edition Advertised as a New Release.......2006-11-10
The web site said you were taking advance orders for the book, so I assumed it was a new edition. It was the very old one reissued.
Your return service, however, was excellent, even though I had of course opened the package, finding out it was not a new edition.

Great book, great price.......2002-11-16
Great book, great price. I highly recommend it to anyone needing a good and inexpensive reference source.
Just a quick note:
The ISBN is not the same as the Library of Congress number. In fact, they are two separate identifiers used for bibliographic purposes. The ISBN is the number used to uniquely identify a book with a particular edition and publisher. This number is unique to that item and its printings. If the edition has changed (because of updates, a new publisher, abridgements, etc.), the book gets a new ISBN.
One Gets What One Pays For.......2002-02-17
I gave this dictionary five stars because it is a twenty-two hundred page, 1993 Random House 2nd edition of a 1987 Webster's Unabridged dictionary. Now, where can one get all that for ten bucks!
Dictionaries are tricky things to buy. The best ones have taken decades to compile and the process is very expensive. Say, the lifetime work of two or three great language scholars; what is the estimated value of that? If one wanted English scholars, they're the best (hermits), however, the liquor bill alone would make the project prohibitively expensive in today's market. So, that is why one should pay attention to the details;
1)The "acknowledgments and permissions" will tell the buyer whose dictionary this originally was.
2) Earliest copyright date; this tells you when the original information was compiled.
3) Paper quality; for instance, this "Webster's" unabridged dictionary is printed on very low quality paper. Such a high-acid-paper reference book may crumble apart in ten years. Keep in mind 2,200 pages for ten years at a-buck-a-year is still a good buy.
4) The "ISBN" number I believe is the Library of Congress catalog number; I have not found a Liberian that understands the logic of these numbers.
5) Dictionaries are highly collectable, for historical information as well as the rare book value.

Customer Reviews:
A waste of time.......2005-09-09
This dictionary does not live up to its advertisement. The instructions on how to use its advertised features are next to non-existent. When I finally figured it out for myself by cut-and-try, I wondered whether it had been worth the effort. Sorry!
Review.......2005-08-10
It is certainly totally different from the paper version and looks just like any other electronic dictionary. I found it useful but the interface is quite elementary and could be much better for that price.
Nice Dictionary, lousy software.......2004-11-03
I can't believe how bad the user interface is for this
product, and even though I bought it to replace a nearly
10 year old "Talking American Heritage Dictionary", I'm
likely going to stick with the old one!
The "About" information reveals what's going on here--the
copyrights are for 1999, and there are even notices about
"for 16 bit Windows"; we're talking pretty ancient software.
The dictionary itself is pretty standard; there are plenty
of entries, and a nice layout. There is good use of bold,
color, and italics, which makes for easier reading. The
dictionary guesses when you type most of the word you are
looking for. You can hit "Enter" without finishing the typing,
and the word appears.
It didn't handle misspellings well. I tried to look up
"mnemonic" by entering, "mnumonic". The dictionary responds
with "M. Nurs", and offers no suggestions. The AHD, on the
other hand, suggested I try "mnemonic" (which is the correct
word), when I entered the same thing.
The dictionary sometimes adds words you look up into a history.
Sometimes it doesn't. I have yet to figure out when it decides
to add, and when not.
The buttons are not organized well, and the shortcuts actually
conflict with the menus. I tried to exit by hitting ALT-F,X
(standard Window's UI), and instead brought up a filtering
window. Strangely, only filter and Prefs have a keyboard
shortcut--the other 7 buttons have none.
There is no click to find a word! This is terrible. I looked
up "PC", and it says "See Personal Computer". Why can't I click
on "Personal Computer"? I have to type it all out (yes, you can
copy/paste). There is no excuse for this in a software
dictionary.
Mouse scrolling does not work, nor does drag-scrolling (you don't
get realtime movement by dragging the scrollbar.). You either
have to move line by line, or move the scrollbar, let go, and
hope you've gone the distance you wanted.
If you just want to read definitions on your PC, this dictionary
will work. But the American Heritage is just as cheap, and works
much better.
This is only a re-issue of the old 1999 version........2003-05-31
The contents of this dictionary is superb. But the software is only a reissue of the old version. No user interface has been changed or improved. It does not even recognize a mouse's wheel button!
Great Dictionary, but the 2003 edition is actually 1999.......2003-05-22
Random House WUA is a fine dictionary - no question about it. The touted 2003 release is actually the now four year old 1999 edition. One click at Help->About is enough. Even file dates are from 1999. It was probably tested for Win XP/2000 compatibility and then re-released.
Still - the best Unabridged Speaking computer dictionary I know.
