5 out of 5 stars 2nd serving of busy peoples low fat -recipes.......2003-07-04

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in quick, tasty low-fat meals. This cook book and Dawn's other low fat cook books are perfect for those of us who work and don't have a lot of time to prepare a healthy meal. There are also many recipes marked "budget friendly" that helps you to prepare lower cost meals. The recipes really makes meal planning easy especially when you are cooking for you and others that are not exactly watching their fat intake!

3 out of 5 stars What could be easier?.......2001-05-29

If you don't like to cook from scratch, you'll love this cookbook. Everything comes from a box, bottle, can or package...as easy as using a can opener. Friendly, down to earth format makes this a pleasant, even if not super healthy, cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars 2ND Serving of Busy People's Low-Fat Recipes for the New Mie.......2000-03-29

This cookbook is extremely user-friendly. The directions are so super easy to follow that I've tried many recipes. Teriyaki Beef and Broccoli on Pg.113 was great and very easy to make. Beef and Broccoli Casserole with Zesty Cheese Sauce Pg.130 was also very yummy. My kid's really liked the Italian Mini Meatloaves Pg.133. The Cranberry Corn Muffins Pg.43 were so good I've made them three times now. Dawn's Breakfast Parfait Pg.167 is delicious and so easy to prepare I also have it for a snack. 2ND SERVING OF BUSY PEOPLE'S LOW-FAT RECIPES FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM by Dawn Hall is so refreshingly uncomplicated you will want to use these recipes again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Handy, imaginative, taste-pleasing, scrumptious recipes........2000-03-05

2nd Serving of Busy People's Low-Fat Recipes is more than a handy, imaginative, food-lover's bible of taste-pleasing, scrumptious recipes for favorite foods in all categories that are unrelentingly delicious as well as low fat and nutritious. I repeat that it is all of the above and more. 2nd Serving is one woman's testament about living a good life, filled with spiritually uplifting messages about the joy of her daily struggle with demands of living and her certainty of the love of God. Seasoned with aphorisms by Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Pastor Clay, and others, these vibrant recipes appeal from every page. Some of the tempting recipes I tried were:

Cranberry Corn Muffins (made with egg whites, corn muffin mix, cheddar cheese, and craisins) Maple Yams Reuben Salad (great taste of Reuben sandwiches and low-fat!) Chicken Fried Steak (my husband raved!) Turtle Cake (to die for, and an incredible 240 calories per serving)

There are handy menu ideas and suggestions and specific dietary content reports at the end of each recipe, carefully broken down by, for example, the variety of meat used in the recipe so you can choose your diet/content with precision and taste. 2nd Serving is the third cookbook by talented author Dawn Hall. She directs that 10% of her profits go to "Solid Rock," an inner city outreach program for children and teens in Toledo. Dawn Hall is both inspirational and candid in her introduction and subsequent chapter, "One on One with Dawn." Devoted to her family, she has explored her "weaknesses" or liabilities such as food addiction and love of talking and found they were God's gifts to her to be shared with the world. Lucky world! We get to reap the benefit of her inspired creativity with every mouthful! 2nd Serving is also designed to be a fundraiser tool, with helpful suggestions and contacts listed in the back. 2nd Serving is a wonderful cookbook for life!

    Book Description

Greek tragedy is currently being performed more frequently than at any time since classical antiquity. This book is the first to address the fundamental question, why has there been so much Greek tragedy in the theatres, opera houses, and cinemas of the last three decades? A detailed chronological appendix of production information and lavish illustrations supplement the fourteen essays by an interdisciplinary team of specialists from the worlds of classics, theatre studies, and the professional theatre. They relate the recent appeal of Greek tragedy to social trends, political developments, aesthetic and performative developments, and the intellectual currents of the last three decades, especially multiculturalism, post-colonialism, feminism, post-structuralism, revisions of psychoanalytical models, and secularization.

      Book Description

Tomorrow's America is a cold and ravaged place, a nation devastated by despair and enduring winter. In a small New England city, senior government official Dr. Judith Carriol finds the man she has been seeking: a deliverer of hope in a hopeless time who can revive the dreams of a shattered people; a magnetic, compassionate idealist whom Judith can mold, manipulate and carry to undreamed-of heights; a healer who must ultimately face damnation through the destructive power of love.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Very readable.......2002-09-12

Essentially there is nothing wrong with this book - in fact it is very compelling and readable and as such deserves a 4 star rating.

Still in saying that I wonder what made Colleen write about such a religious event but duplicated in the future? It is not offensive in my mind but others who take the Christian religion seriously may see this book as blasphemy.

Others like me who are not so worried will find this an easy and entertaining read that will leave you feeling a trifle sad about the world she has created in this novel.

2 out of 5 stars Jesus at 2030.......2002-01-12

I think that this book is the story of Jesus, I don't know why Colleen has written again this story 2030 years later, I didn't learn anything at all everything I just knew it.

3 out of 5 stars Sophomoric, but well-written and engaging.......2001-12-29

You know the story. The child Jesus Christ is born during the reign of Caesar Augustus, despite the efforts of the local monarch Herod. He reaches adulthood during the reign of Augustus's hand-picked successor Tiberius, and preaches a message of spiritual renewal to an oppressed population. His apostle Judas Iscariot acts as his ministry's manager, but later betrays him to the government. The story is later told for the ages by a Gentile named Luke.

This book translates that story into the not-too-distant future. Unfortunately the translation is rather sophomoric. Dr. Joshua Christian (Jesus Christ) is born during the presidency of Augustus "Gus" Rome. His story unfolds during the presidency of Augustus's hand-picked successor Tibor Reece (Tiberius), when the government invents "Operation Messiah" in order to bring a message of spiritual renewal to an oppressed citizenry, despite the reluctance of Cabinet secretary Harold Magnus (Herod). Christian's advocate Judith Carrioll (Judas Iscariot) manages the project, to his ultimate detriment, while hired biographer Lucy Greco (Luke the Greek) tells his story for the masses.

"Creed" is both less and more than a simple analogy for a time-transplanted gospel. Despite the many unsubtle analogies to the New Testament, "Operation Messiah" does not follow--cannot follow--the story of Jesus too literally, so author Colleen McCullough experiments with twists on the story in its twenty-first-century setting. Sometimes her twists makes sense, but more often they do not, and they leave the reader wondering where she was trying to go with her story. She may not have known herself. But she paints an interesting twenty-first-century America, despairing over climatic and economic changes, whose government goes searching for someone "capable of teaching a sick nation how to heal itself" and finds--then elevates--a made-to-order messiah.

Even though this book slathers on the parallel names and other biblical analogs a little too thickly, I did enjoy it. The plot left much to be desired, but the writing was very good, the narrative flowed easily (even when the author seemed unsure about where it was flowing to), and the story was occasionally thought-provoking. The book was not deep, but it was engaging, and in the end a satisfying read if you are looking for entertainment and not philosophy.

3 out of 5 stars Worth thinking about........2001-09-13

Wow! How incredible to have just finished this book only a few days before the horrific attack on America. Much of the "story" is predictable, in some places tedious, however, the concepts have merit in the futuristic setting. The parallels to the life of Christ, government controls, and some hint of world-wide unity were indicative of the resources and talent of the author. I've read nearly all of her books and am a big fan of the "Ceaser Series".

2 out of 5 stars A Valiant Effort That Falls Short.......2001-08-14

Ms. McCullough is a gifted writer who is not afraid to explore different genres. Here, she posits a United States facing a 21st Century Ice Age (when she wrote it global cooling, not global warming was in vogue). As futurism, that is one heck of an intriguing premise. But the tale falls short. She posits a new Messiah (whose surname is the rather trite "Christian") and, as his protagonist, a witch of a government bureaucrat who "makes" the poor chump into an international icon. The story plods along until its rather predictable ending. Well, not every work can be a masterpiece, and it is unfortunate that this one didn't make it because it sure had potential.

This being said, I would make a great movie!

"August was the month when flies started to become a problem, buzzing round the dung heaps in the corner of every farmyard and hovering over the open cesspits of human refuse that were located outside every house."

Although daily dangers were many, housing uncomfortable, and the dominant smells unpleasant indeed, life in England at the turn of the previous millennium was not at all bad, write journalists Lacey and Danziger. "If you were to meet an Englishman in the year 1000," they continue, "the first thing that would strike you would be how tall he was--very much the size of anyone alive today." The Anglo-Saxons were not only tall, but also generally well fed and healthy, more so than many Britons only a few generations ago. Writing in a breezy, often humorous style, Lacey and Danziger draw on the medieval Julius Work Calendar, a document detailing everyday life around A.D. 1000, to reconstruct the spirit and reality of the era. Light though their touch is, they've done their homework, and they take the reader on a well-documented and enjoyable month-by-month tour through a single year, touching on such matters as religious belief, superstition, medicine, cuisine, agriculture, and politics, as well as contemporary ideas of the self and society. Readers should find the authors' discussions of famine and plague a refreshing break from present-day millennial worries, and a very stimulating introduction to medieval English history. --Gregory McNamee

      Book Description

A vivid and surprising portrait of life in England at the turn of the last millenniuma world that already knew brain surgeons and property developers and, yes, even the occasional gossip columnist. Chapters follow the structure of an ancient calendar, and overflow with such facts as the recipe for a medieval form of Viagra, what clothing was like in a world without buttons, and much more. A standout among millennium books, offering a revealing comparison of the end of the first millennium with the end of the second.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Amusing.......2007-06-25

Lacey's work is a good primer, even useful in a basic undergraduate British history class. However, I would not recommend this for an upper level or graduate level student. Its intention of giving and introduction to social values and practices at the time under consideration is well executed, but that is all it does.

4 out of 5 stars Making history enjoyable and entertaining.......2007-04-23

This is one of the most "readable" history books I've come across. To say that it is entertaining is NOT a criticism, but a compliment. Why does history have to be dry and pedantic in order to have value? I learned more about life at the turn of the 1st millennium than I have in reading a dozen other more scholarly tomes. This is the way history SHOULD be written.

Naturally, it is not absolutely complete and all-encompassing (though, given the dearth of contemporary material, most writings are merely speculation anyway). But it is an excellent starting point. If you are intriqued, the books 7-page bibliography should suffice for additional reading.

5 out of 5 stars You think you've got it rough..........2007-03-29

...then try living in , say, England in the year 1000 A.D.
Although I read this book approximately 2000 A.D.,
I still remember the profundity of the book 6-7 years later.
The author does a fine job of placing the reader within
the circumstances of actually living in the year 1000.
I couldn't help over and over again wondering to myself:
"How could I deal with that?" or "Could I deal with that?"

This book expands the mind as much as any science fiction
      book--and this stuff really happened!

The reason I'm reviewing this book is because Amazon
recommended the book because of another book I've ordered.
The fact that I would take time to review the book years
after reading it speaks very well of the book.

Easy to read, yet profound: sounds like a great combination to me.

3 out of 5 stars Trivial Pursuit circa 1000 A.D........2007-01-06

This is not a bad book...easy to read and full of interesting tidbits. If you are doing other reading on Saxon England, as I am, this book gives the period a little flavor.

The book is loosely based around the work calendar, giving you one chapter for each month of the year. Each chapter describes rather superficially the kind of work typically done by farmers and tradesmen that month. The style of the book is very light, covering tidbits such as remedies for various ailments, punishments for various crimes, typical battle formations, and the sign language used by monks living under vows of silence.

One thing this book does not do, however, is live up to its title. In the book's defense, it is deceptively simple---it really does contain a great deal of information. But it covers none of it particularly deeply or in any kind of an organized fashion that might allow you to paint a vivid image in your head of what life was really like in 1000 A.D. Hoping to get that from this book would be like trying to get a sense of life at the turn of the second millenium by reading through the questions and answers in a game of Trivial Pursuit.

4 out of 5 stars The way school books should be.......2006-12-17

If school books were pesented this way, more students would be interested in history. Easy to read, enlightening, thought provoking.

This is a great book for individuals and families about how to prepare for possibile Y2K problems. It points out many potential problems beyond simply whether or not my PC will know what year it is that I hadn't considered. (What if the water or electricity company isn't quite ready?) I highly recommend this for anyone wondering what they should be taking into consideration as 2000 approaches.

            Product Description

The Neoplatonists in the beginning considered Beauty as alternative to the word Good. Good with a capital 'G' was the Neoplatonic equivalent of our word God. This concept of Good presents Deity in Neoplatonism as the object of the Soul's desire. All things in themselves naturally aspire to the Good. As the object of man's eternal quest it is a substance in Itself beyond definition. Any condition which arises by which this natural aspiration is thwarted, blocked or retarded results in an infirmity to the psychic life of the person. The five-part archival audio tape series upon which this pamphlet series is based ("Doctrines of Neoplatonism," transcribed by Clarke E. Johnston), was given by Manly P. Hall in 1983 to students who were interested in learning more about the ancient wisdom. It seemed to have been one of his favorite subjects down through the years, for he spoke and wrote about it frequently during his long career. In fact, the foreword to his book "Lectures on Ancient Philosophy" declared that the basis of it was Neoplatonism. In the last few years of his life, Mr. Hall said that after years of study and reflection, he had come to believe that the doctrines of Neoplatonism had descended to us in a purer form than nearly any other philosophical system. This system seemed more suitable to we active, extroverted Western people. He believed this was true because though it was as deep and thorough as any other approach to enlightenment, its precepts were more easily understood and their relative simplicity tended to impel an interested person to put them into practice by beginning to learn to live a more philosophic life. The material in this series provides an excellent overview of Neoplatonism that we hope those who read it may be inspired to study the subject themselves. As anyone who has spent time in such study and learned its value will tell you, it is worth all the time you can give it, with its maximum value coming from the disciplined application o
