Product Description

A printer's error in the August 2005 printing of the Concise Oxford English-Arabic Dictionary of Current Usage led to the majority of the diacritics being deleted, creating errors and rendering the dictionary unusable. These faulty books have all been recalled and are now completely replaced with new, corrected books. This convenient pocket dictionary--an abridged and updated edition of the acclaimed Oxford English-Arabic Dictionary of Current Usage--is designed for both the English speaker learning Arabic and the Arabic speaker learning English. It records the different levels of usage found in newspapers, radio, television, and films, providing major Arabic dialectal equivalents for familiar, colloquial, and slang words. Ideal for the student or traveler, the dictionary includes: * Nearly 40,000 entries providing English headwords with multiple meanings and their nearest Arabic equivalent * For Arabic speakers: phonetic equivalents for headwords, phrases illustrating unexpected and alien idioms, and explanations of headwords denoting concepts new to the Arab world * For English speakers: vowels and diacritics included in the Arabic text, irregular plurals of nouns, and simple verb conjugations in the imperfect tense * Meticulously transcribed Arabic characters for easy reading

1 out of 5 stars Defects.......2006-11-10

I ordered this dictionary twice, and both times it came with severe printing defects (dots missing on many Arabic letters, making everything unreadable). I finally returned it and am contemplating what other dictionary to buy. Content-wise, it also didn't look so impressive, there were a lot of words you would think it should have that weren't in there.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Dictionary.......2006-08-21

This is a terrible dictionary. Many of the words are spelled incorrectly and many of the definitions, while technically correct, are absolutely nonsensical.

2 out of 5 stars Shell out a little more for a lot more quality.......2006-05-02

i'm very sorry i bought this book. It may be concise, and it may be cheaper, but one shouldn't sacrifice spelling for saving a few dollars! The concise edition drops the dots off many of the letters, thus either misspelling the word or creating letters that don't exist. i borrowed the full-sized edition and found it to be fine. Don't waste your money and your sanity on this version!

4 out of 5 stars The best one I have found.......2005-11-20

This is the best Arabic dictionary I have found so far, but I still have a couple complaints about it. There are a few things missing, like the names of countries, and sometimes the print is small and hard to read. The Al-Mawrid dictionary is more complete, but can be overwhelming, especially for new students, becuase when you look up an English word, it lists a whole bunch of Arabic words and it is hard to figure out which on is the right word. This dictionary, however, has very clear explaination on when to use what word. I would give it five stars if it were a little bit more comprehensive. For the serious Arabic student, this is the best English-Arabic dictionary out there.

For a companion to this, I suggest the Hans-Wehr. Someone complained that this dictionary only included English-Arabic, but that is common for serious acedemic dictionaries though, because it would be huge dictionary if both were included in one volume.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best dictionary you can buy..........2005-07-30

While this dictionary does contain a lot of entries, it is English to Arabic only; there is no Arabic to English. It does however show the short vowels, though the script is a little frustratingly small. I took it back once I found out it was only a one-way dictionary. The Arabic Practical Dictionary by Hippocrene is much better (though it doesnt' show short vowels however).

4 out of 5 stars Spanish and English Dictionary.......2007-05-12

Very helpful for those trying to learn Spanish or English. Lots and lots of information and easy to understand definitions.

3 out of 5 stars Some annoying deficiencies.......2007-05-10

This book has a couple of nice things going for it, as others have mentioned-- it's easy to read (good type size) and very lightweight/portable. Those are important features. I completely agree, however, with the reviewer who pointed out the incomplete verb conjugation in the back of the dictionary. Why bother with such a section if you're not going to be thorough or at least explain the reason for your omissions? A presentation like this could mess up a beginner. Also, there should be consistency between the Spanish/English and the English/Spanish sections. Don't define "esposo" as "husband" in the former and then only list "marido" as the word for "husband" in the last. Why not put both "esposo" and "marido" with the entry for "husband"? The word listed for "wife" is "esposa." Why not "marida" to match the "marido" given for "husband"? Such discrepancies point to sloppiness on the part of Larousse. There were probably multiple authors/editors working on this book and no one person ever bothered to ensure consistency.

4 out of 5 stars why do I have to enter a title?.......2007-01-12

This dictionary is very useful and convenient. I especially like the list of verbs and their conjugations.

4 out of 5 stars Larousse Concise SpanishEnglish Dictionary.......2007-01-12

Overall I have found the book useful. The one major thing I would change would be to add a phonics pronunciation to the book. I realize that would enlarge the size of the book considerably. However, if some of the numerous definitions for some of the words, such as "si," were removed, that might help keep the size down. The odds are that the average person who purchases this dictionary will never become fluent in Spanish. Those who do will pick up all those definitions as they need them.

Or, two dictionaries could be an option - a beginning one and a more advanced one, stressing that they are primarily for those who are beginning to learn Spanish. With the phonics included they could become attractive to schools that teach languages.

3 out of 5 stars I Disagree.......2006-10-22

This is not a bad dictionary, but it has some major problems. First & foremost is the so-called verb conjugations. There is no rhyme or reason to how they are arranged-not alphabetical. Furthermore, the verbs are not fully conjugated-there is no second person singular (you are,or you were), and no third person plural (they are, the girls were). I also found that there are words that I have known for years that are not translated-Example: I looked up "husband" in the English section, and found only the word "marido." I've known the word for husband as "esposo" all my life. So I went to the Spanish section and looked up "esposo"-sure enough, it means husband. On a less PC note, I don't care to know UK translations for colour, honour, etc...

I guess I made a mistake coming to Amazon looking for a dicionary. None of them let you look inside. My recommendation is to go to a bookstore and find a good one, THEN find it here. You just can't judge a reference book by its cover only, or by customer reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I'd hoped for..........2007-05-15

I am an English major and getting ready to go into a Master's degree. I had done extensive research on concise OED's and thought this one sounded the best. I was really hoping to get more backround info on words and more complete definitions. Perhaps there are too many words and just not enough pages! I am still happy to have it and have used it, but it is better for Boggle than anything so far!

5 out of 5 stars Excellence.......2007-04-10

The delivery was quick, and the book in perfect shape. I enjoy ordering from Amazon because their website gives you a lot of choice, you know what you are getting, the price is good - it is just an all 'round good experience!

5 out of 5 stars Good enough.......2007-01-09

This dictionary is complete and good enough for what I want. I am totally satisfied!

4 out of 5 stars Concise is a good discription.......2006-11-04

The dictionary is a good quick reference for checking spelling or usage. Keep in mind that they the definitions are a lot shorter than a standard dictionary.

3 out of 5 stars Many, very short (!) definitions.......2006-09-13

From the point of view of a learner of the English language (advanced level), as I am, I have to admit that this dictionary is not as good as I expected.

Of course, the amount of words and phrases is extensive with about 240,000. Nonetheless, this dictionary is not called 'concise' just for the fun of it. It is in some cases too concise, using defining words I don't even understand or which are the same as in the word I looked up in the first place.

Thus, my expressed recommendation goes to the Cambridge International Dictionary of English, which only uses a "strictly controlled 2000-word Defining Vocabulary" ensuring a high level of understanding.

4 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-01-27

This book delivers what it promises; "an up-to-date working tool of modest price and compass for the student of biblical Hebrew and Aramaic."

The book quality is superb and two years on is still in excellent condition considered the amount of use. The print quality is excellent and very usable. The Hebrew words are bolded, including their various forms. The basic meaning of each word is also bolded. This makes looking up words and their meanings especially efficient. I've found this excellent for translating biblical texts.

One of the most useful features is that each Hebrew word includes its various forms. As a beginner I've found this useful when parsing Hebrew text.

Proper names do not have their English rendering included. This has caused me to have to refer back to my BDB occasionally. This has been the one major flaw I've found in this work. There are transliterations included for specific usages of the Hebrew words. I found this feature a bit annoying sometimes. I would have found the actual Hebrew text to be much more useful.

This is an ideal book for use in translating biblical texts and its size and format make it extremely usable. However, I would not recommend it for in depth word studies or for those who do not read Hebrew.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE to those who don't already know Hebrew!.......2007-01-18

I had high hopes that A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament (CHALOT) would be a helpful Bible study tool. However, for me, this book is practically useless.

The words are in order according to the Hebrew alphabet. The words are written in Hebrew ONLY. It's so hard to find a word because I don't recognize the Hebrew alphabet. I search and search just trying to find the word that I'm looking for. Once I find a word, the definition isn't any clearer or more detailed than the definition in Abingdon's Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible (ASECB) -- usually, it's less detailed. Also, CHALOT (this book being reviewed) only gives a few examples of scriptures; I had hoped for all listings of where the word may be scripturally found. I find myself referring back to the ASECB to find all the word's listings (for comparison of meaning).

If you don't already read and write Hebrew, I propose that you will find this book as frustrating as I do. It is not handy for people who don't read and write Hebrew. To me, the definitions are not worth the effort and time spent searching for them.

For English-speaking Bible students, I still haven't found any better study tools than the ASECB (mentioned above) and The Interlinear Bible-Hebrew, Greek, English (IB). If you're interested in researching the earliest-known languages of the Bible, the use of these two books, together, is very thorough (exhaustive) and well organized for EASY reference. I don't know what the price differences are between the CHALOT and the ASECB (to be used with the IB), but if you're serious about Bible study and appreciate excellent referencing, the ASECB and IB are worth the money.

As for the CHALOT, I regret the money that I spent for it. I feel the on-line customer reviews that I read before buying this book were misleading.

3 out of 5 stars The minuses outweigh the pluses.......2007-01-10

This lexicon is an abridged version of a much larger 2 volume work (ISBN:9004124454). The pluses include: a handy sized volume, with the arrangement of words in alphabetical order. The minuses outweigh the pluses: the Hebrew text within the definitions is inexplicably transliterated (making this a poor learning tool for students of Hebrew). The quality of printing is fair, not great. One would do better to settle for the Oxford printing of Brown, Driver and Briggs (0198643012) which remains the standard lexicon for Biblical Hebrew. Aside from the aformentioned irritations, one may mention the less than satisfactory definitions of Hebrew words, as well as a complete lack of information on Hebrew names.

4 out of 5 stars Warning: Not by chapter.......2006-10-12

This is a "lexicon" due to its references, but it's organized like a dictionary. If you're translating the Hebrew Bible, this is an awesome resource as a Biblical dictionary, but I thought I'd let y'all know that it's very different from the Armstrong Lexicon which organizes by chapter, in order. Thus, if you're working through a few chapters of Bible, in a class or on one's own, then the Armstrong will list the infrequently-used words (i.e. "the hard words!") in order by chapter, so you don't have to look up the words in a dictionary like this one.

In other words, I use both this and the Armstrong. The Holladay I use as a dictionary for a few words here and there, but when working through chapters of Hebrew Bible, the Armstrong Lexicon is more of a time-saving cheat sheet.

4 out of 5 stars More Support.......2006-09-14

I own several lexicons, but like most of the reviewers noted, Holladay is the one I always reached for until I found this really old pocket sized lexicon (the same size as Souter's Greek Lexicon.) I use the pocket lexicon now first, and Holladay's second. I don't even look at BDB anymore. Too bad someone hasn't come out with a new pocket-sized lexicon for fast lookups while flying somewhere!

Use this book before you send your writing to an editor. No one will be as capable as you of initially editing your writing for wordiness, IF you have the "The Dictionary of Concise Writing" at your side.

It's easy to use and durable. It has 400 pages in two parts. Part One is "Words and People," with concise advice about concision, and Part Two, beginning on page 45, is "The Dictionary of Concise Writing." The dictionary alphabetically lists wordy phrases with "alternative expressions and real-world examples."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Dictionary.......2006-07-31

As with the Webster's New World French and Italian dictionaries, this is excellent. I find everything I look for and more. There is the added advantage of a pronunciation guide for the English and Spanish entries, a feature sadly lacking in many other otherwise good dictionaries.

5 out of 5 stars A Little Jewel.......2006-06-10

This is by far the best Spanish-English dictionary I have had. Others include Merriam-Webster, New World International, and Larousse (bought in Mexico.)

This dictionary is the most updated and complete I have seen. I was impressed when I found the spanish word "pendejo," which is a relatively modern, kind-of a bad word, still it included a quite accurate definition in English.

It is loaded with different meanings for the same words, and real-life examples of how to use the words in context. For example, I looked up the English word "end;" which is a very versatile word. It listed about 15 to 20 meanings, each with a context example. In particular I was impressed with "We'll never hear the end of it" translated as "Nos lo repetira toda la vida," which more literally would translate back as "He/She will bring it up for the rest of our lives," which is a common way of saying the same thing in Spanish. Phrase-translation like this conveys the full meaning and throws the words out the window.

The paper and print quality are excellent. The size is quite handy, midsize: not pocket size, but not full college textbook size either. Generally I like paperbacks, but it did not fare very well when my one-year-old pulled it off the shelf.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars 3rd edition print WAY TOO SMALL.......2006-12-29

I saw comments that the print in the third edition was too small, but I bought it anyway. Big mistake. The print is so small that the dictionary is virtually useless. It's about 5-6 point type. I need a magnifying glass to read it, and complex Chinese characters come out as little more than a black blob, even with a magnifying glass, because the characters can't be printed that small. Don't buy this dictionary!!!!

The only reason I gave it a "2" rather than a "1" is that the content seems okay (as much as I can see of it, anyway).

5 out of 5 stars Very, very good..........2006-12-11

This dictionary is absolutely great. I have owned a number of copies over the years, and it is just the only dictionary to have when you are on the road in China.
I have inspected many, many Chinese dictionaries over the years in the never ending quest for better Mandarin resources, and I have always been disappointed with other dictionaries of a similar (and sometimes much larger!) size - they always have too few entries or too few examples to be of practical use.
I notice that one or two reviewers have commented on the size of the dictionary, so if you are looking for a huge, weighty tome to sit on your desk (and not take with you anywhere), then this may not be the dictionary for you. But if you are looking for a fabulous little dictionary with tens of thousands (including jiantizi and fantizi) of entries that will not let you down either during study or in the wilds of China then this is definitely the one for you.

1 out of 5 stars Not as expected, Much too small for everyday use.......2006-06-29

I only gave the third edition of the book a 1 star partially to gather attention of new buyers. Please note the content is very similar to the second edition but has one major flaw. The physical and print size is about half that of the second edition making it hard to read and use as a functional at home dictionary. I recomend anyone needing a dictionary with traditional (very hard to find a good one) to buy the larger "Oxford Chinese Dictionary" ISBN: 0195964594.

1 out of 5 stars Too small to be of use!.......2006-03-11

I was expecting this edition to be the same size as the second edition. However, it is so small as to be essentially useless! Recommend Amazon.com discontinue this item to avoid having a great number of disappointed or even hostile customers.

4 out of 5 stars Reliable small dictionary.......2005-11-08

This is the dictionary I usually use when visiting China. It has a lot of contents for the price. Multiple definitions are given for most words, sometimes with illustrative sentences. Pinyin, simplified and traditional characters are shown for all entries in both directions. There is also a radical index to help you find the pinyin equivalents of characters. (A stroke-count index, such as in some Taiwan dictionaries, would have been a helpful addition.) The fonts used are a bit small throughout, however.

One complaint I have that isn't unique to this dictionary concerns a word of great importance to a traveler -- "hotel". Check the E-to-C section of this and most other dictionaries, and you'll find only one gloss: "lu3guan3" (number indicate tones). This is also the word used in the Berlitz Chinese phrase book, BTW. But all but one of the dozen or so different places I've stayed at in Beijing & Shanghai have been called "fan4dian4", and the exception was a "jiu3dian4" (Pudong Shangri-La). "Fandian" is also the word taxi drivers use and respond to. Sure enough, if you look up "fandian" in the C-to-E section of the Concise Dictionary and several others, you'll find it glossed as "hotel". Why there isn't more symmetry regarding this important entry beats me.

By the way, if you're visiting a major city in China, consider winging it on a phrase book until you can visit a large bookstore. The Concise Dictionary 3E is widely available there in a convenient vinyl-covered pocket edition for Y36 = about US$4.50.

5 out of 5 stars new pocket Hawaiian Dictionary.......2005-09-26

This is an easy cross reference book. This book was part of the selection of books at a home we stayed at on the Bid Island, and I was happy to find it on Amazon. I am having fun with it.

    5 out of 5 stars A great little resource........2002-07-30

This book has around 11,000 words with adequate definitions.

I like the fact that the people that compiled this dictionary included names and even a guide to assist in pronounciation.

This nook is not an exhaustive researh on the Hawaiian language; but will greatly assist in research; Two Bears.

Aloha nui loa (I love you very much).

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential and Useful Reference.......2006-05-31

I have had this book for the past few years. This is an essential and highly convenient medical dictionary. As a compact reference, I have been able to find the definitions to at least 90% of the words I have been looking for. The accompanying dictionary is an amazing and useful program to have installed on the computer.

The pictures/images in the printed dictionary are great to help illustrate various definitions. There are even several pages of photo-quality images in the middle of the book. The CD-ROM includes all of the information in the book in a very easy-to-use format. There are images, diagrams, and 3-D illustrations.

Recommendation: You won't go wrong with this dictionary.

5 out of 5 stars Superb work of reference.......2001-08-22

This concise medical dictionary is not concise at all: it gives all the information one needs, accompanied by very clear and informative drawings and pictures and it even gives the reader the correct pronunciation of the word. The alphabet tags on the side of the book (they give the first two letters of the words on that page rather than only the first letter) are a major help for a quick reference.

I am "only" a biomedical scientist and not an M.D., but this book is very important in my daily work to understand all those sometimes hopelessly complicated medical terms that I encounter in articles and correspondence. I can imagine that this book can also be very useful for M.D.s en medical students to look up the terms they do not encounter every day.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book........2000-10-27
