Customer Reviews:
Excellent, great teaching tool.......2007-05-12
Everything promised in the ads and reviews I read on this reference book is true. I love the highlighted entries and the illustrations. My students (adult ESL learners) love them, too! It's a great starter dictionary for English or Spanish. Some of the entries are brilliant - look under the entry for the word "it". This book goes beyond the definitions and succinctly explains the differences between the two languages of the common usages of individual words. I highly recommend this for use in the classroom.
How to learn Spanish faster!.......2007-03-09
I used this book while taking a course in Spanish at my church. It really helped. I like the idea of using sentences instead of just the usual word explanations found in ordinary dictionaries. I highly recommend this to beginners.
Great Student Dicctionary.......2007-02-15
My middle schooler really likes and uses this dictionary. The format is more "student friendly" than my Spanish dictionaries. She finds the words she needs and the explanations are concise and the pictures entertaining.
excellent.......2006-11-10
very good photos and definitions. Perfect for 1st or 2nd year spanish students.
One of the better small Spanish-English dictionaries.......2006-09-10
My Master's thesis was a review and rating of Spanish-English dictionaries. I find this dictionary, like all the other Larousse dictionaries, to be a good choice.
Here are a few of the factors which distinguish a good bilingual dictionary from a bad one.
To begin with, ignore certain publishers' marketing ploys such as entry and translation counts. They say nothing about the value of the words chosen.
The first valid factor to consider is lexicographic technique. A bad dictionary simply lists translations. Take, for example, the entry in the Cassell's Spanish Dictionary under the English headword loop: "lazo, gaza, nudo; ojal, presilla, alamar; anillo; recodo, comba, curva, vuelta," etc. For the English reader writing in Spanish, this is hopelessly inadequate, as the dictionary provides no clue as to which translation to use in which situation.
Compare the treatment of the same word in the far superior American Heritage Spanish Dictionary. "(length of line) lazo; (coil) vuelta; (bend) curva; (circular path) vuelta, circuito; (fastener) presilla" etc. Here, the user is given glosses in the native language to assist in identifying the right word for the context. Example sentences are also a tremendous help. Larousse is excellent in this respect, presenting good information to guide users through the semantic and syntactic complexities.
Second, a good dictionary should maintain an up-to-date lexicon, including such cultural and technological additions to the language as "baby sitter," "hostile takeover," "software," "flash drive." Larousse is good in this respect; its frequent revisions are more than mere window dressing and do a creditable job of covering the most recent additions to the language.
Third, idioms, slang, and cusswords can present real problems to the language learner, and a dictionary needs to handle them in a clear and frank fashion. This dictionary gets it right, giving stylistic equivalents for translations as well as clear advice to the user.
Be careful when you choose a bilingual dictionary, as some of the choices--Cassell's and Vox, for example--are downright terrible. The field of large dictionaries stays relatively static over time, and the best choices in it by far are Oxford, Collins, and Larousse. The field of small dictionaries, on the other hand, has many more players. While not the only good choice, Larousse is a dictionary you would certainly be pleased with.

Customer Reviews:
Clear, concise yet rather comprehensive--a lot of dictionary for very little money !!!.......2007-04-13
Larousse offers a great pocket bilingual dictionary for persons who are studying Spanish--or even Spanish speakers studying English, for that matter. As pocket dictionaries go, this IS one of the better ones. It is also very lightweight so you can carry it with you if you go to school or the library to study; this is a big help to many students.
One reviewer notes that when Larousse updates their dictionaries they do more than window dressing--and this reviewer is right. You get great entries that reflect the changing times: the definitions of "software," "hostile takeover" and baby sitter" are all included in this latest edition of the dictionary. Moreover, you DO get different words that reflect the different nuances of a word whenever necessary. For example, the English word hysterical is translated not just once but twice for your benefit. The first translation of "hysterical" is for frantic (histérico) and the other for very funny (tronchante). Very good!
The dictionary also includes entries for "foul" language; this also helps the user.
The pages are made of thin paper but it's more than sufficient for the student; but please remember that this is an inexpensive pocket dictionary. The typeface is easy to read and I like how you can use this dictionary to translate back and forth by looking up entries in either Spanish or English.
I recommend this pocket dictionary for all students of Spanish. It will be particularly useful for persons who need to carry a dictionary when they are on the go; and students at the more elementary levels of instruction will be more than pleased with this dictionary. If you are an advanced student or if you want a more comprehensive dictionary, however, you will need to keep looking.
college professor approves.......2007-02-03
I bought the dictionary on the basis of another review but my professor saw me using it and said I chose a great one. So far it is working out quite well.
Great for students.......2007-01-11
As a high school AP Spanish student, I highly recommend this dictionary for Spanish-learners around my level. It is very compact and useful. Only once was I dismayed to not find the word I was looking for... unfortunately I forgot what that word was, but I do remember it was a pretty technical and trivial one.
You will not be disappointed.

Spanish and English Dictionary.......2007-05-12
Very helpful for those trying to learn Spanish or English. Lots and lots of information and easy to understand definitions.
Some annoying deficiencies.......2007-05-10
This book has a couple of nice things going for it, as others have mentioned-- it's easy to read (good type size) and very lightweight/portable. Those are important features. I completely agree, however, with the reviewer who pointed out the incomplete verb conjugation in the back of the dictionary. Why bother with such a section if you're not going to be thorough or at least explain the reason for your omissions? A presentation like this could mess up a beginner. Also, there should be consistency between the Spanish/English and the English/Spanish sections. Don't define "esposo" as "husband" in the former and then only list "marido" as the word for "husband" in the last. Why not put both "esposo" and "marido" with the entry for "husband"? The word listed for "wife" is "esposa." Why not "marida" to match the "marido" given for "husband"? Such discrepancies point to sloppiness on the part of Larousse. There were probably multiple authors/editors working on this book and no one person ever bothered to ensure consistency.
why do I have to enter a title?.......2007-01-12
This dictionary is very useful and convenient. I especially like the list of verbs and their conjugations.
Larousse Concise SpanishEnglish Dictionary.......2007-01-12
Overall I have found the book useful. The one major thing I would change would be to add a phonics pronunciation to the book. I realize that would enlarge the size of the book considerably. However, if some of the numerous definitions for some of the words, such as "si," were removed, that might help keep the size down. The odds are that the average person who purchases this dictionary will never become fluent in Spanish. Those who do will pick up all those definitions as they need them.
Or, two dictionaries could be an option - a beginning one and a more advanced one, stressing that they are primarily for those who are beginning to learn Spanish. With the phonics included they could become attractive to schools that teach languages.
I Disagree.......2006-10-22
This is not a bad dictionary, but it has some major problems. First & foremost is the so-called verb conjugations. There is no rhyme or reason to how they are arranged-not alphabetical. Furthermore, the verbs are not fully conjugated-there is no second person singular (you are,or you were), and no third person plural (they are, the girls were). I also found that there are words that I have known for years that are not translated-Example: I looked up "husband" in the English section, and found only the word "marido." I've known the word for husband as "esposo" all my life. So I went to the Spanish section and looked up "esposo"-sure enough, it means husband. On a less PC note, I don't care to know UK translations for colour, honour, etc...
I guess I made a mistake coming to Amazon looking for a dicionary. None of them let you look inside. My recommendation is to go to a bookstore and find a good one, THEN find it here. You just can't judge a reference book by its cover only, or by customer reviews.

Customer Reviews:
Je l'aime; vous l'aimerez aussi........2007-04-11
Ce dictionnaire vous offre une petite taille, un texte lisible, plusieurs entrées pour chaque mot équivoque, et pas mal de phrases utiles. Il suffit pour les nouvelles et pour la plupart des textes, mais pour les lectures plus littéraires, bien sûr, il faudra que le lecteur recoure à un dictionnaire comme Collins Robert French Unabridged Dictionary, 8th Edition.
Great addition to lessons.......2007-01-17
Fairly easy to understand - contains a lot of information - not too confusing. I think it is a really good addition to audio lessons, or to find a quick phrase while traveling.
Best French Dictionary for the Anglophone.......2006-06-28
Simply put, this is the best French-English/English-French dictionary I've found yet. Even in the more concise editions, there isn't often a word or translation missing. It is sturdy, compact, and easy to use, making it ideal for even the beginning student or traveler (and for the more advanced student, this company also puts out an excellent French language dictionary). Forget any other French/English dictionary--this is the best you'll find. Whoever says that this dictionary is anything less than superb and fit for its purpose ought to be stuck trying to learn Russian from one of those "Living Language" courses--eeek!
The Best Compact French Dictionary Available..........2006-05-17
When I say compact, of course, I mean that it's not heavy. It's the size of a normal mass-market paperback, but it has pretty much any word you'll need on a normal basis. When I'm reading French internet articles or sitting down with one of the Harry Potter books in French, I can find just about anything necessary. Once in a while I'll have to check my massive Oxford-Hachette, but this is really a steal at $6.
Okay for travelling students and reading the newspaper. Bad otherwise........2006-01-27
I'm studying in Switzerland right now. I came to this country because it has 4 official languages, and I'm studying two of them. What that means for me is a massive backpack, and thus, when I went to purchase a French dictionary, I chose a Pocket-size one - in this case, the Larousse.
While its bigger brothers may be good dictionaries, this cut-down version contains literal translations of words and very little if any contextual information. Even if you know the word, the 1-to-1 match-up game doesn't work in learning foreign languages, and that's where this dictionary can lead.
I think it's most useful for reading the journal, esp. for students who have Romance Language background and simply need to know what a word is but have the capacity to put it into context. All and all, not a bad reference text, but nothing exciting.
One plus is that there is a black lining to distinguish the French from the English section, and there are over 80,000 translations contained in a relatively small, portable format.

excellent resource guide.......2007-01-05
the unabridged edition is a wealth of information for any one interested in finding the right words and much more
Missing pages.......2006-10-19
Yes, I read the previous reviews on missing pages and hope that I would not have the same problem. Unfortunately, I have discovered some missing pages. In my short time, I have discovered pages 61 to 76 of the English-Spanish section to be missing. Don't know what else is missing. I guess I will find out.
Aside from the missing pages, it is by its very nature very comprehensive (that's why I bought it), and gives lots of different examples for most of the words. If not for the missing pages, I would recommend it as a desk reference copy (obviously not for travel). Who can I complain to about the missing pages?
Great Dictionary, Disappointing Quality.......2006-09-22
I just purchased this dictionary at the beginning of the month, but unfortunately I had to return it back to Amazon for the second time. I had used previous editions of this dictionary while doing professional translations and now that I am freelancing, decided to get the latest edition to assist me with my projects. I was impressed to see how much the dictionary has improved over the years both in terms of content, layout and overall presentation and usefulness. In that respect, this dictionary deserves 4 or 5 stars. However, the first time my order was fulfilled, I went through every single page of the dictionary to make sure there were no missing pages (see earlier reviews from other users), as I did not want any unpleasant surprises later on. This proved to be a wise decision. Although there were no missing pages in either copy, both were defective. It seems that there is a printing problem with this edition, as several pages in the Spanish section of the dictionary were smudged with the printer's ink, thus rendering the text illegible. As I've indicated, this happened in the original as well as the replacement copy Amazon sent me. Because of this oversight or disregard for quality control by the publishing company I cannot recommend the purchase of this dictonary. Maybe there are good copies of this edition out there, but I am not taking any more chances and will be purchasing the Oxford Spanish Dictionary instead, which does not seem to have the same quality control or printing issues. ** By the way, I meant to give this review only 2 stars, not five! **
One of the leaders in the field.......2006-08-21
My Master's thesis was a review and rating of large Spanish-English dictionaries. Since then, I have conducted follow-up studies to keep up with the market.
I find the leaders in the field to be Collins (HarperCollins), Larousse, and Oxford. Each publisher appears to be trying to one-up the others with the newest and best edition. The real winner is the consumer. My joint review of these three dictionaries is found here and duplicated under both of its competitors.
Here are a few of the factors which distinguish a good bilingual dictionary from a bad one.
To begin with, ignore certain publishers' marketing ploys such as entry and translation counts. They says nothing about the value of the words chosen. Likewise, ignore the word "unabridged" in the title. No work is truly unabridged except the monumental monolingual Oxford English Dictionary.
The Collins, Larousse, and Oxford are all excellent in this respect, presenting a wealth of practical information to guide users through the semantic and syntactic complexities.
The second factor is organization, which is important in large desk dictionaries. In an entry for a complex word like "get," a bad dictionary may force users to lose time searching for their translation through unbroken columns that can extend for more than a page. This was a problem--now corrected--in previous versions of the large Larousse dictionary. Today, the current editions of the Larousse, Collins and Oxford use similar organization schemes, dividing long entries by meaning into well-titled paragraphs. This scheme makes these dictionaries a joy to use.
Third, a good dictionary should maintain an up-to-date lexicon, including such cultural and technological additions to the language as "baby sitter," "hostile takeover," "software," "flash drive." Larousse, Collins and Oxford are leaders in this respect; their frequent revisions are more than mere window dressing and do a creditable job of covering the most recent additions to the language.
Fourth, idioms, slang, and cusswords can present real problems to the language learner, and a dictionary needs to handle them in a clear and frank fashion. All three dictionaries get it right, giving stylistic equivalents for translations as well as clear advice to the user.
One complaint about the Collins is that it often presents Britishisms without labeling them as such. Revisions have only partially corrected the problem. For this reason, I would not recommend this dictionary to native Spanish speakers in the US.
Oxford and Collins contain excellent "language in use" sections which give formulas for language functions such as asking for information, agreeing, disagreeing, etc., as well as formulas for letters and documents.
The bottom line on large dictionaries? Avoid Vox, Velasquez, and Cassell's. Simon & Schuster's may serve as part of a collection but is unsuitable as a user's only dictionary. I will report on the large Harrap's when I examine it, but my opinion of their other dictionaries is quite favorable. While not perfect, Collins, Oxford, and Larousse are the best large Spanish-English dictionaries I have examined. Except as noted here, most users would be well served by any of the three.

Customer Reviews:
Truly a "mini" dictionary.......2007-06-14
I'm preparing for our fourth italian vacation. This year we're going to drive throughout Sicily where I hear they don't speak english like they do in the mainland. This dictionay contains english-italian and italian-english translations. It also includes useful phrases like,(I hope we don't need to use this one),"the engine is making strange noises". It's only 3" x 1" and will fit nicely in my fanny-pack.
Perfect little dictionary.......2007-01-03
I got this dictionary while I was taking Italian 1 class. I chose it because it was really small, so I figured it would suit not only my entry-level studies, but also be the best for travel. I am very pleased with it! In addition to having Italian-English and English-Italian translations, it has conversation guides, verb charts and other little helpers that are really helpful and practical. Great mini dictionary.

Excellent Resource.......2007-04-05
The Student Larousse Dictionary is an excellent resource and a very convenient size. Am trying to relearn French after many years and need all the help I can get.
good and simple.......2007-04-04
easy to acsess, has good sentences for common daily usage. was useful for me as i neeeded to communicate with my nanny who speaks little english but good french and i speak no french but good english. my nanny is studying this book to learn some english words.
For Introductory French.......2007-02-23
While the dictionary provides sample sentences and light definition, it cannot be used for upper level French courses. The product contains common, frequently used words for everyday conversations and not much vocabulary for complex terminology or essay writing. Other dictonaries would be more suitable for college level French courses.
Great Reference.......2007-02-17
This is the third French/English dictionary I have bought and is by far the best. Easy to use and understand, and very practical. I am using it along with the Rosetta Stone and they compliment each other very well. I highly recommend.
the best French dictionary.......2006-02-25
The LaRousse Student dictionary is the best one on the market. It translates French to English and vice versa. It has example sentences with each word and numerous phrases and expressions. It also includes several colored pages of vocabulary such as: animals, maps, food, etc. It is a great dictionary for students from middle school to college.

Really Good Reference.......2007-05-27
I used this dictionary for my beginning Portuguese class, and was very happy with it. More often than not,I was able to find words in this dictionary that my classmates could not find in theirs. It's a little bulky, and probably not good for traveling (too big to put in a regular sized purse), but when I travel to Brazil in a few weeks I will use this dictionary for my classes, and then buy the pocket size for when I am out on the street.
Larousse Concise Dictionary:Portuguese-English/English-Portuguese.......2007-02-14
My students in an adult ESL class find this dictionary indispensable when working in class or on their own. It is reasonably priced and contains most of what they need.
Terrific.......2006-07-05
Larousse dictionaries are much, much better than any of the others. Bantam's are decent and Oxford's are ok, but you will get frustrated eventually if you are actually trying to speak the language. Their dictionaries for some reason seem very "regionally challenged." Only Larousse successfully includes a wide range of colloquialisms, is not afraid to publish the naughty words (which you will definitely hear), and manages to make the dictionary portable, readable, and affordable. I really like this dictionary.
Very good dictionary.......2006-06-08
My father bought this book new and from Amazon, and we got it about one week ago. This dictionary is very good and almost complete. There's even a part of this book devoted to advices about life in Brazil, USA and England. The failures are some dificult words, who don't exist on it and other small failures.
Not at all what I expected.......2006-03-20
"Incomplete" is the best word to describe this dictionary. I'm Brazilian, and for a native speaker this dictionary is far from "avançado" (meaning "advanced") as its Portuguese title suggests; incidentally in direct opposition to its English title: "Concise Dictionary." I bought it as an aid for a small translation project, and I am disappointed. It doesn't have words such as "mentoring" and "stewardship." I've had to revert to online searches, as I had started, in order to find an adequate translation for several words - a much more cumbersome method. If you need a truly advanced English/Portuguese Portuguese/English dictionary, keep looking; this is not it.

Customer Reviews:
A very poor publication.......2007-06-10
Larousse Advanced Dictionary: French-English/English-French (Larousse Advanced Dictionary)
Rating on CONTENTS ONLY = 3 stars. In hindsight I wish I had bought the Oxford Hachette French-English Dictionary which is superior. This Larousse is not as comprehensive as the equivalent size Larousse Unabridged Spanish-English Dictionary. That publication also provided an alphabetical thumb-index. Rating on PRODUCTION QUALITY = 0 stars. The hard covers are reversed and upside down. Several pages are so badly printed that they are difficult to read. Having always previously bought Larousse dictionaries, I am very disappointed!
Francophiles - you need this!.......2007-03-03
My french tutor used this dictionary for all the words which she, a native french speaker, did not know. So, there! What a recommendation!
This is the reference standard for desk dictionaries in french. It is easy to use but certainly thorough. If the word isn't here, you probably don't need to learn it.
One feature separates it from the pack: extensive colour pages of picture based word learning. And extensive sections of grammar review.
Highly recommended
A Classic.......2007-01-13
A Classic helpful dictionary for all French lovers and speakers. What quality.
Like sending in the Varsity squad.......2006-10-16
I am in the midpoint of my third semester of university-level French. Up to this point, I have been reasonably satisfied with using paperback French-English dictionaries. I have four of the paperbacks by different publishers. I have found that as you get into a level of course work that is more writing-intensive, you find that the French-English dictionaries that were the mainstay of your existence in high school and university French 101 and 102 are not meeting your needs. That is to say, I had gotten to the point where I could not find French equivalents of English words in my standard paperback dictionary. You know, when you have a course that requires a lot of writing, you need to be specific with the right words. For me, the Larousse Advanced Dictionary was like calling in the Varsity squad. It was like telling myself "the cavalry has arrived!" and that I will get the word or words that I need.
At this point in my education, this is the dictionary I need *right now*. It may be too advanced for most high school or university beginning French students, but it is just right for me *right now.* This is like the Abrams main battle tank of dictionaries. Or should I call it a "Dreadnought"? The ability to have the right word is important to me. Note that it is a big book, and you will not be carrying it to class. However, it is great to have in your room as a reference tool. It will help you find the right word. I would recommend this for library reference collections and upper-level students.
Larousse Advanced Dictionary Eng-Fr Fr-Eng.......2006-08-28
When I was a teacher of French, my Larousse was a valued teaching aid, but before my retirement I gave it away as obsolete - there was no entry for computer! - and bought a soft-cover dictionary on nasty paper. Recently, with some reading to do in French, I located the 2005 Larousse Advanced Dictionary and have been delighted to receive it.
I am particularly impressed with the detail in definitions, with examples of usage; with the distiinction clearly made between UK and US usage; with the panels illustrating such topics as Les Menaces, La permission, Exprimer ses craintes; with the central pages giving examples of every kind of letter and postcard (formal and informal), CV and job application, postal address conventions etc; and with the detailed colour plates. It is a dictionary that repays time spent browsing...
I am left feeling that nobody does dictionaries as well as Larousse does. This would be an asset for any teacher of French (or French teacher of English) or school library. If only my earllier Larousse had been as detailed!

Customer Reviews:
One of the best!.......2007-02-20
This is one of the best dictionaries on the market. The selection of words is great, and the layout is easy to read and easy to carry. I've used this book a lot and will continue to buy Larousse books!
Nice book, but I liked Cassell's better.......2007-02-13
Though this is a very nice book, I prefer the old version of Cassell's to this one. The Cassell's version had a lot more examples of use in the translated terms. The Cassell's version also seemed a little more "user-friendly" in terms of the layout of the book. I purchased this for my high school daughter and middle school son to use in their French classes. I also highly recommend the 501 verbs book for anyone studying French at those levels. (I made it through 3 years of college French with 501 verbs and the Cassell's books).
Great French-English/English-French Dictionary.......2006-11-10
It's a great dictionary. My daughter says it helps her make A's in her French class.
