5 out of 5 stars Very Good Reference for a Hardware Designer.......2004-07-20

The Book covers lot of the current and emerging technologies
for most aspects of Board Design and this is the first book of this kind I have seen so far.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2004-06-05

The book is a must have for anyone interested in the latest technologies, and their implementations all wrapped up in one place. I have a lot of references on my desk, but this book is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars An Interactive Way to Learn Maya.......2007-05-07

This book was a great way to learn the concepts of Maya. It is colorful and engaging. The book uses fun examples to teach the reader about creating animations.

This book starts out with basic concepts and runs up all the way into complicated animation details. It would be a great book for any level - but absolutely perfect for someone starting out, and looking to become a Maya pro.

1 out of 5 stars worst....guidebook.....ever..............2007-03-28

horrible. as some have said, names are misused, images are confusing,
greatly lacking in explanation. i've been banging my head against this thing for two and a half weeks and i give up. clunky workflow examples and frankly outdated pipeline. anyone interested in a book like this would do themselves a favor by checking out Gnomon Studios or Digital Tutors. they present more sophisticated and intuitive workflows. save your money and use the manual that came with your software as reference with the video guides available from the above mentioned companies. it'll save you from the inevitable ulcers Learning Maya 7 will cause. p.s. been using EIAS since '95. Not new to this game. hope the review helps.

4 out of 5 stars Apparently quite good.......2007-01-09

I gave this as a gift, but the recipient told me it's an excellent resource and well worth the investment

4 out of 5 stars Good for Starters.......2007-01-04

This book was used in my Intermediate 3d Animation course and it's pretty good for the basics of rigging a bipedal character. However, the book tends to be inconsistent with some of its naming conventions for certain bones while rigging, which could confuse a beginner. For example, when they go through and tell you to name all your bones, they tell you to name the "knee" joint "up leg", then a few chapters later, they refer to it as the "knee joint" instead of "up leg."

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-08-17

This is exactly what i was looking for, i think this is an amazing book if you want to learn....you have to get it.

Book Description

A Straightforward, No-Nonsense Guide to Building the Most Accurate, Complete, and Useful Data Models Possible. How do I know if my data model is accurate? When is a model really complete? Is it possible for a model to be both technically perfect and of no use to an organization, and what can I do to avoid that problem? This book provides answers to these and other crucial data modeling questions. While there are plenty of books that describe the characteristics of finished high-quality data models, only The Data Modeling Handbook gets down to the nitty-gritty of actually building one. Packed with real-world examples, annotated diagrams, and a wealth of rules and best practices, this field-tested guide provides experienced data modelers, architects, and engineers with hands-on guidance from two noted data management experts.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor choice for experienced modelers - just ok for beginners.......2004-05-14

This book oversimplifies the examples and expects a leap of faith to truly understand the information engineering technique of data modeling.

May be good in the class room; but in actual practice there are much better references available such as Silverston, Inmon, Kimball, and of course the Zachman framework.

1 out of 5 stars Very academic in nature, more theory than reality.......2004-02-05

Anyone that has been modeling very long will see this book for what it is ... after you look at it once, you'll put it on your bookshelf and leave it there. Save yourself the money ... There are much better reference books available. Try David Hay's book on patterns, or Len Silverston, or Graeme Simsion. Check out the DAMA reference guide .. at least it's built by actual practitioners.

The help screens on the Data modeling tools are more advanced in explaining data modeling than this book.

Probably great for theorists - managers or teachers that don't know what they are doing! But the real modelers will seek help elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading or, if you want, wrong.......2003-09-26

The authors deny the fifth normal form and state special-case rules as if they were universal. Examples: Eliminate triads; Two entities cannot have more than one relationship. Although in some specific situations the advice might be valid, anyone who is trying to learn from the reading will be misled. Less harmful, even interesting, for a professor (to learn how not to approach the teaching of DB modeling).

Poor, underdocumented examples. Oversimplification. Unfortunately at the time I had only the title to choose from. Good thing most books now have a table of contents.

Database modeling still doesn't have strong references as database theory does (Date's, Ramakrishnan's, Elmasri's only to cite three). There are excellent theoretical (Thalheim's "Entity-Relationship Modeling" is good) and philosophical approaches (finally they re-published Kent's opera-prima "Data and Reality", fabulous).

The picture is poor when it comes to hands-on modeling. Bruce's "Designing Quality Databases..." is an exception. Good and useful for someone who is developing modeling expertise. But I especially don't recommend Reingruber&Gregory's book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good one to start a good model.......2003-08-28

It is a very good book for a Data base designer and a data modeler. I strongly recommand this book to all database people.

2 out of 5 stars I'd rather visit the dentist.......2003-03-25

This book is about as much fun to read as a book about differential equations. Good concepts, but the context is very dry and puts me to sleep. I've been in the industry for several years, and I bought this book as a reference. But I find myself cringing every time I need to use it.

      Book Description

Multivariate statistics and mathematical models provide flexible and powerful tools essential in most disciplines. Nevertheless, many practicing researchers lack an adequate knowledge of these techniques, or did once know the techniques, but have not been able to keep abreast of new developments. The Handbook of Applied Multivariate Statistics and Mathematical Modeling explains the appropriate uses of multivariate procedures and mathematical modeling techniques, and prescribe practices that enable applied researchers to use these procedures effectively without needing to concern themselves with the mathematical basis. The Handbook emphasizes using models and statistics as tools. The objective of the book is to inform readers about which tool to use to accomplish which task. Each chapter begins with a discussion of what kinds of questions a particular technique can and cannot answer. As multivariate statistics and modeling techniques are useful across disciplines, these examples include issues of concern in biological and social sciences as well as the humanities.

      1 out of 5 stars Not good.......2001-10-26

Frankly, I'm embarassed for the authors. I have the second edition, and it is rife with errors. It just illustrates what a PhD is worth these days. I held out hope that the enclosed CD would have a spreadsheet of value (as it implies in the text) but all that is included is the book in PDF format. Thanks guys, that's helpful! Your next book should be titled "How to lie on the cover about the contents".
I just don't know at whom they are targeting this book. Too basic for anyone in finance with a semester of accounting under his/her belt, maybe it's for kids in high school in Junior Achievement? People running Kool Aide stands?

I think we all know the market -- their students who are hosed into buying it. Click another link to get away from this book as fast as you can, so my suffering is for a purpose.

      1 out of 5 stars almost worthless.......2000-09-26

This book is practically useless for anybody who actually needs to do financial analysis and forecasting at work. 90% of us use spreadsheets for financial analysis and forecasting, and we end up working with complex spreadsheets which tie everything from complex sales forecasts to income statements to balance sheets to cash flow projections. I am still looking for an appropriate book and/or spreadsheet add-ons that will allow me to do this. I have been searching in vain for such a program and/or book. Does anybody know?

2 out of 5 stars Could be useful for beginners in financial analysis.......2000-08-03

The section on spreadsheet is terribly outdated - obsolete even. It's pretty much like a basic reference for financial modelling but does not really provide the step by step approach to the topic. Sorry but I don't think you will find useful tips on financial forecasting here.

3 out of 5 stars Decent reference for practical financial analysis techniques.......1999-03-24

This book is useful for looking up not just formulas but valuation methodologies in a hurry. However most of the techniques, though illustrated well, do not go very deep. This book is probably good for beginners in finance. Experienced readers may be served better by other publications. All in all, I found this text useful as a quick and easy "boiled down" reference guide for models, formulas and valuation techniques.

3 out of 5 stars A a good book which needs to be updated.......1998-08-15

This is a good book which contains financial formulas and many examples of business analysis. The chapter on spreedsheets is badly outdated. This detracts from the book because business analysis is now all about spreadsheets. The short chapter on outdated financial programs detracts from the book. Their are other, better, books now available.

To be fair, the book covers a very complete collect of business analysis precedures and still is a good reference.

        Book Description

Over the past two decades, not only has supply chain analysis become a strategic focus of leading firms, it has also spawned an impressive array of research that brings together diverse research communities. Adding to this diversity and intellectual energy is the emergence of E-Business. E-Business creates new competitive dimensions that are fast-paced, ever-changing, and risk-prone, dimensions where innovation, speed, and technological savvy often define success. Most importantly, E-Business challenges the premises and expands the scope of supply chain analysis. The Handbook is a comprehensive research reference that is essential for anyone interested in conducting research in supply chain. Unique features include:

-A focus on the intersection of quantitative supply chain analysis and E-Business,
-Unlike other edited volumes in the supply chain area, this is a handbook rather than a collection of research papers. Each chapter was written by one or more leading researchers in the area. These authors were invited on the basis of their scholarly expertise and unique insights in a particular sub-area,
-As much attention is given to looking back as to looking forward. Most chapters discuss at length future research needs and research directions from both theoretical and practical perspectives,
-Most chapters describe in detail the quantitative models used for analysis and the theoretical underpinnings; many examples and case studies are provided to demonstrate how the models and the theoretical insights are relevant to real situations,
-Coverage of most state-of-the-art business practices in supply chain management.

Audience: This volume is suitable for researchers, faculty, graduate students, and practitioners in the following areas: supply chain management, operations research, management science, decision science, industrial engineering, operations management, civil engineering/transportation, logistics management, risk management, applied mathematics, economics, computer science, industrial management, and other related areas.

        Book Description

The application of computational electromagnetics to real-world EMI/EMC engineering is an emerging technology. With the advancement in electronics, EMI/EMC issues have greatly increased in complexity. As a result, it is no longer possible to rely exclusively on traditional techniques and expect cost-effective solutions. The first edition of this book introduced computational electromagnetics to EMI/EMC engineering. This second edition continues the introduction of computational electromagnetics to EMI/EMC engineering, but also adds new modeling techniques, namely the Partial Element Equivalent Circuit method and the Transmission Line Matrix method, and updates to the science of EMI/EMC modeling that have occurred since the first edition was published.
This book combines the essential elements of electromagnetic theory, computational techniques, and EMI/EMC engineering as they apply to computational modeling for EMI/EMC applications. It is intended to provide an understanding for those interested in incorporating modeling techniques in their work. A variety of modeling techniques are needed for anyone interested in using computational modeling in the real world. This book includes an introduction of all the popular modeling techniques, such as the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method, the Method of Moments, the Finite Element Method, the Partial Element Equivalent Circuit method and the Transmission Line Matrix method.
EMI/EMC Computational Modeling Handbook, Second Edition will serve many different levels of readers. It will serve as a basic introduction to modeling as applied to EMI/EMC problems for the engineer interested in getting started, and it will help the person already using modeling as a tool to become more effective in using different modeling techniques. It will also be useful for the engineer who is familiar with computational techniques and wishes to apply them to EMI/EMC applications. This book can also be used as a text to help students of electromagnetic theory and application better understand real-world challenges facing engineers.

It did not impress me either with the technical contents or with the presentation style.

5 out of 5 stars very useful book.......2002-09-01

this book can help engineers get started with modeling for EMC
it is not an EMC design book, and it needs to be used by
people with some amount of intelligence. it will not hold your hand, but it WILL give you the information needed to be an engineer.

the previous reviewer was obviously looking for a cookbook, and this is a very dangerous topic to use as a cook book. I, for one, am glad that the authors provided the information in a way that allows me to be the engineer, and not simply follow blindly.

I recommend this book to any ENGINEER who can think, and wants to know more about EMC modeling and simulation

5 out of 5 stars This book is GREAT.......2002-09-01

this book is a great help to get started in using modeling tools. I find all the major techniques explained in one place, instead of needing to get 5 different books!

the help to get started in creating models from the complex products was especially helpful.

the explaination about validating the models without needing to do measurements for everything was useful and allowed me to get started right away!

this is a unique book, in my experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know about the various modeling techniques, and works in the real world

        1 out of 5 stars EMC Engineer's Review.......2001-01-10

This is the most useless book on the topic of EMC that I have ever read. This book merely informs the reader of the various analytical techniques and informs the reader of what techniques to use to solve various EMC problems. A great portion of the book is spent on convincing the reader on the benefits of the various computational techniques. However, the book does not show how to implement the techniques. It preaches to the quire, since only engineers that are already in the field would buy the book. It does not provide a single worked out example or even provide the theory on how to implement the computational techniques. I would highly discourage anyone from buying this book.

3 out of 5 stars Acceptable Kit, but not what was ordered.......2007-02-04

First off, this is a decent kit. It's small, so it's easy to carry around, but it's small, so there are only so many compounds that can be modeled with it. I bought two to get around this, which is great. The pieces from both kits fit in one box so it doesn't take up any extra space. Very nice.

This is not like some kits where the atoms are, well..., atomic and you connect tubes or sticks to form molecules. With this kit, there are sub-pieces that you use to build each atom depending on what it is. The sub-pieces are labeled sp3, sp2, sp, etc. to indicate how it should be used. It takes a little extra time to build each atom before you build a molecule, but the angles are always correct. Double bonds aren't just two single bonds bent to reach, they are the appropriate angle and shape. This limits the pieces you can use, since they are very specific, so there is a downside to the positive.

Also, the bonds are post and tube. The post fits into the tube. It makes for tight connections and works pretty well, except you have to be careful that every single atom is configured to match the atom on the other side of the bond. If one side is post, the other better be tube. Often times you will need to pull apart what you have just done in order to reverse everything. It can be a serious pain in the butt.

The biggest downside is that the kit I received (Jan. 2007) is the eighth edition kit. It is not what is advertised here, at least when I ordered it and as I write this. The kit I got comes with a cheap cardboard box, NOT a plastic case. The pieces seem bigger than my TA's and it looks like there are less of them. I have not done a side by side comparison though. There are less black pieces in my kit than are in the picture here, that is for sure. The organizer is absent in this version too, so all the pieces just get piled into the cheap cardboard box and you have to sort through to find them. We can use these in exams and it is going to suck to have to dig through an unorganized mess of atom sub-pieces with the clock ticking down. An organizer style plastic case could be purchased separately from any hardware store, but that just adds to the cost and overhead.

All in all, it's an acceptable kit for the price, but what I received is not what is featured here. Very disappointing. I think I'm going to try to sell this and get one of the more expensive sets.

        5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-01-12

Came in on time and was exactly what i expected. Good product.

2 out of 5 stars Not for younger students.......2007-01-09

I was looking for a chemistry modeling kit that I could use to demonstrate to my homeschooled kids how atoms bond to eachother. This is not that kind of a kit! It is much more sophisticated -- the components are basically just the various types of bonds, and you have to just know that the atoms are there. It is not a ball-and-stick kind of kit, where you can show, for instance, that one oxygen bonded with two hydrogens makes water. This kit seems to be geared for college-level organic chemistry. The components seem to be well formulated for building complex organic compounds with many different types of bonds. It's just not for younger students; I would even hesitate before using it for high school students. Definitely not for middle school and younger.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value and Versatile.......2006-06-01

I have been using these for ~20 years. I have a couple of sets for my own use and recommend them for all the organic courses that I teach. They are very economically priced. More importantly, they are easy to assemble and the plastic is flexible so that you can make strained structures without breaking the models. They are a bit large compared to some other models, but I find this an advantage in many cases. The models really last.
