3 out of 5 stars EATING RIGHT .......2007-06-27

THIS WAS A VERY EDUCATIONAL BOOK. IT WAS RECOMMENDED BY MY DOCTOR. I THINK THAT THE LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY OF THE BOOK IS GREATER THAN MANY PEOPLE WOULD ENJOY. IT REQUIRES MORE THAN A SINGLE READING TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS. IT ALSO RECOMMENDS A LOT OF HERBAL REMEDIES OF VARIOUS CONDITIONS WHICH COULD BE A LITTLE COST PROHIBITIVE. THE DIET GUIDE WAS SIMPLE AND EASY TO FOLLOW BUT REQUIRED THAT YOU HAVE A GOOD GRASP OF THE BOOK'S CONCEPTS IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND WHY TO EXCLUDE FOODS FROM YOUR DIET. I ENJOYED THE BOOK AND WILL REREAD MUCH OF IT. I AM ALSO FOLLOWING MANY OF ITS GUIDELINES FOR EATING FOR MY BLOOD TYPE.

5 out of 5 stars Life Turnaround.......2007-05-20

I have always played with supplements since being fasincated by Eat to Win by Robert Haas in the mid 1980's. I have bought B vitamins, niacin, vitamin C thanks to Linus Pauling and other supplements like guggilipids or nattokinease. I started going back to the health store trying to get my cholesterol in line and saw this book on the shelf in 2001. I didnt buy it until 2003 when I just got curious enough to grab it off the shelf after looking at it several times. I was totally stunned silly after reading it! I first had to find out my blood type. I was an type O and also found out that my brothers, father and cousins on my dad's side are Blood Type B's. Most of my friends were either A's or O's but not B's and some were A negative. This explained alot about my childhood and my life and not just my cholesterol. About a year later, I bought the secretor status kit and was floored to my knees again when I found out I was a non-secretor which is almost a handicap in life. I have made incredible health gains knowing this information and have done it on my own with research almost like the Incredible Hulk. Although I don't follow the diet now, I am on more advanced programs based on my own knowlegde; at the time it was incredible and the information invaluable. Its now become a joke that I wasnt a type B in my family and I will never be a secretor. Also you can make assumtions like my Grandma was B with a B recessive and my grandpa was an O and was a non-secretor also. They didn't even know it either because it wasn't invented yet! Therefore, based on logic I am a replica of my grandpa! And I also noticed that almost every girl who is an type A dates a type O guy and visa versa. Its like Pac Man with a pattern. All of this was concluded from this book!
The conclusions are logical assumptions based on the indisputable facts. Its helps when guessing what supplements to buy as well. For example, I do very well with whey based products based on a B heredity and ok with products like Spirulina a plant based product.

If you buy into the possibilities, it can be beneficial. Both my husband and I have felt better since trying to follow this. I can't say any real weight loss, but definitely feel much better!

5 out of 5 stars Mayo Clinic - Family Health Book.......2006-08-07

The Mayo Family Health book is a "wealth of information."
My husband recently became ill and was hospitalized. We were able to pinpoint symptoms in the book which helped us along with our health provider get appropriate testing and treatment for his condition.

With healthcare today, we must be "informed consumers".
I have worked nearly 35 years in clinical laboratory medicine and I still learn something new everyday....this book certainly helps.

5 out of 5 stars A book I very much want to get .......2006-03-20

I like the format of this book. The six sections seem designed to truly make the work user friendly.
They are:
Part I: Living Well II: Common Conditions and Concerns Through Life's Stages III: Making Sense of Your Symptoms
IV: First Aid and Emergency Care VisualGuide: Anatomy and Common Disorders Part V: Diseases and Disorders
VI: Tests and Treatments
The great prayer is that most of what one learns from reading and going through this guide will not have to be useful or relevant.

5 out of 5 stars This is One of the Three books you Need to Have.......2005-12-23

This is an excellent resource book that covers a large majority of health conditions and treatments. It give a thorough explanation of Symptoms, First Aid, Diseases and Disorders, Tests and Treatments. What is especially nice are the chapters on common conditions based on your age group and how to Live Well. The information is covered thoroughly with illustrations and diagrams. There is a full-color photograph and illustrations section in the book called the Visual Guide. This section is helpful when trying to identify things like rashes and skin disorders and for reviewing anatomy.

The other two books you should possess for starting your medical/health library should include a good drug/medication book (or use a website like www.medlineplus.gov) and a good medical dictionary (recommend Taber's, but MedlinePlus also has an encyclopedia/dictionary).

5 out of 5 stars Mayo Clinic Family Health Book, Third Edition.......2005-09-21

I was needing an up-to-date health book and I am well pleased with my choice. The book arrived in very good condition and is everything I needed.

Thank you.

Catherine Ponder, Missouri

5 out of 5 stars Best family medical reference.......2005-09-15

I have had an older edition of this book for years. Recently my husband has had a variety of health problems and the book translates what the doctor says, provides a "second opinion" whether the suggested treatment is appropriate and normal, and also helps self-identify conditions and whether they need medical attention or home remedy. The recent purchase is the new edition that we are going to give to his daughter and family in Canada. With two young daughters, they face a myriad of situations that need quick decisions, and they live in a rural area, so an authoritative source will be welcome.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Drawn.......2007-06-15

I found this book to be beautifully rendered with with many drawings of examples face types, features and body language gestures that were clear and easy to understand. But the descriptions were very general and didn't cover all of the variations that exist in reality. (I suppose one is supposed to take one of the authors face reading classes for more info. listed in the back of the book.) Still, it was a facinating read, and a fun topic to try among friends.

1 out of 5 stars Phrenology for the '90s.......2007-02-01

If you wish learn to identify people's personalities or how they may be feeling or may be thinking at a given moment then his book is a waste of your time and money. The ideas in this book are nothing but pseudoscientific nonsense. The text is full of glittering generalities and vague statements which nearly anyone would agree were true about them, regardless of face shape. If you wish to truly read people, your time and money would be much better spent on just about anything by Paul Ekman or any of the books by Desmond Morris on human social interaction. Avoid this book.

1 out of 5 stars save your money!.......2006-12-13

I am a trial lawyer with 26 yrs experience. this book is a joke. there is no science to back up his opinions, which are about as "scientific" as reading chicken guts. It's basically a rehash of the "science" of divining character from the shape of peoples skulls.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-03-19

I had the immense pleasure of having my face read today by Mr. Fulfer, and very accurately, too. If his book can teach people even a tenth of his skill, then it is valuable indeed. I plan to read my copy very carefully.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference book; Check out Rose Rosetree, too.......2003-12-30

What I like the most about Mr. Fulfer's reference book is that the information is well organized, so it is quick and easy to find the data on, say, a nose which has a bump in the middle and large square nostrils.

I have also read Rose Rosetree's "Wrinkles are God's Makeup," which focuses on personality changes which out-picture on the face over time. It is a fascinating book, though not quite as well organized as "Amazing Face Reading."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Really great wealth of information about healing foods.......2007-05-08

Another great book by Michael Murray. Everyone should have one!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Read, Comprehensive Reference for the Lay Person.......2006-12-09

Lots of pertinent information, clearly presented. The egg discrepancy may be a typo, but as a former proofreader, I'd say it's unlikely a work of this size won't have one or two...Over all, I'm impressed with the accuracy. I particularly appreciate the appendices in the back. The disease-specific prescriptions are great, too.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong Stance on Important Topic.......2006-05-17

Dr. Murray condons the use of Sucralose and Asparatame, pg 45. There is so much scientific data showing how harmful these pervasive substances are, it is unconscionable to approve their use in ANY way.
There is good info in this book. I can't say I've perused the whole book.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Helpful.......2006-03-29

"Healing Foods" takes a holistic approach to health, starting with the food we put in our bodies. I found "Healing Foods" helpful in pointing out what kinds of fruit are best bought organic. Organic watermelon for instance is better than conventional watermelon due to its high absorption of pesticides etc. I wouldn't say "Healing Foods" is a bible, but it's a good reference on healthy living. Because it's a reference book and not a guide book, it requires you to have something in mind. If you have say "hazelnuts" in mind and you want to know how best to store them and what they're nutritional value is, then the book is helpful. "Healing Foods" is not, however, a substitute for proper medical attention and especially acute medical care.

4 out of 5 stars Grenerally good book.......2006-01-26

I liked the presentation of the book. It has a list of all different kinds of foods and then gives the benefits.
But, I am not giving this book 5 stars because there is some incorrect or misleading information. For example, the book says (page 8) that the per capita of eggs was 37 in 1909, but according to the Department of Agriculture the per capita was 292.8 (www.ers.usda.gov). That's a big difference!
He mentions phytic acid, but he doesn't say what foods have them or how to deactivate them. (Phytates pull calcium, zinc, and magnisium out of the body. They are found in grains and seeds, and they can be deactivated by sprouting or soaking in water with some yogurt.)
He writes that vitamin B6 helps detoxify estrogen out of the body, but he fails to say that only about 10% of vitamin B6 is absorbed from plant foods while about 100% of B6 is absorbed from animal foods (_AJCN_ 1988: 863-7). The ironic thing is that he says to avoid ALL animal foods (even organic) if one has an estrogen problem.
I'm glad he says usable vitamin B12 is only found in animal foods.
Overall, it's a good book.

3 out of 5 stars Extensive information, but not great for a beginner.......2007-05-07

I was looking for a book that would give me some basic information on natural remedies for my baby. This book has been OK, but if I was really to follow it I would have to invest in building an entire cupboard of herbs and extracts, something I'm really not ready for.

For example, the remedy for the common cold involves combining up to 8 herbs/extracts, none of which I have or even have heard of. It is very detailed information, but too much for someone who is not ready to dive into the deep end of natural remedies.

2 out of 5 stars Strange recipes.......2007-01-09

I expected to find ways of natural healing with common household ingredients, items. Instead, there were many natural healing recipes with very strange herbs & ingredients that I think are hard to find. It wasn't what I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Well Organized Holistic Approach to Children's Health.......2006-11-05

Mary Bove has done a masterful job in creating a comprehensive resource for both parents and practitioners. Before subjecting your children to dangerous long-term medications, this book should be considered "first-line therapy." Parents should challange their children's doctors and practitioners should think about the consequences of the overuse of dangerous drug therapy. This book is a great place to start. Dr. Glenn Gero, Holistic Naturopathic Center

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for alternatives to prescriptions.......2005-10-15

I am not one of those people that boycotts medical doctors, but I do like to have alternatives to the overabundance of prescription medications out there. This book is great because it gives you information about all sorts of ailments, and different ways to treat them using natural products, as well as ways to measure how much to give to your children.

This is a great book, but must be used with common "mommy" sense. Some of the things in the book will go against what your pediatrician will recommend, and thats fine, but you need to make a choice based on both sources of wonderful information to decide what is best for your child.

One thing that did really bother me is that there is a recipe for teething that involves honey-honey should NEVER be given to an infant under one year of age because it can be potentialy deadly. And since most babies begin teething between 6-9 months I was a bit upset that this risk was not mentioned.

The information on making infusions, oils and the like is great though. I would recommend the book to anyone who has common sense about herbs and has a desire to raise a child without the use of a lot of man made medicines.

5 out of 5 stars As a soldier, This book is a great help.......2001-07-17

I am a soldier in the US Army. I put a lot of stress daily on my body both physically and mentally. I constantly have health related questions. This book answers most of them and helps me get better insight on general health issues so I can ask my doctor the right questions. This book is easy to use and the index has every lookup word that you can think of for health insight.

5 out of 5 stars My husband and I love this book.......2000-02-11

We refer to this book regularly. It is a wonderful reference for general, health-related issues and gives good, sound advice based on the most recent medical research which is chronicled in the University of California Wellness letter. Another reviewer sited that it did not have many natural remedies...it does make mention of homeopathic remedies, when research supports it, but not otherwise. Save trips/phone calls to the doctor and get this book.

4 out of 5 stars A great health, disease prevention and nutrition reference........1999-10-22

The book serves as an excellent reference for anyone concerned with improving their health and well being. The book includes very up-to-date information on nutrition and many common sense health issues such as, home safety issues, safe food preparation, child car safety seats, water intake etc.

1 out of 5 stars Tired and pedantic........1999-06-21

There is so mush more to wellnness than this book intimates. At times its closemindedness to new ideas is astounding. Save yourself the cost of the book, there are may better ones available, like Pizzorno and Murray's 'Encyclopeida of Natural Medicine.' This one is just too flawed.
