Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2004-05-03
I am a train fanatic and I know a good reference book when I see one, and this book is one of the best I've ever seen. I have refered to this book at least fifty times at the railroad (whose name is undisclosed) that I work as a volunteer at. Simply an amazingly informitive book that I would recomend to any train fan of almost any age.
Large book but has some short comings.......2004-03-19
The book is a fair to good encyclopedia of trains. It has a large number of foreign engines. Most of the photos are taken from the front and one side and not in profile. The Little Joe appears to be a A-unit but is in fact an A-unit on both ends. The pictures are not very large. Profile drawings would be a good addition.
It is not complete for North America and leaves out many novel, limited production engines like the S-1 Turbine and General Motors Aerotrain.
Some specifications are not available like engine length on many engines. Engine length and height are useful when determining whether a model is scale or not.
It is a good book but did not meet all my expectations and I am still searching for a more comprehensive guide to mainly North American locomotives.

Book Description
Alphabetically organized, fully cross-referenced, and packed with photographs, this enticing encyclopedia makes the perfect gift for anyone who ever felt drawn to the sight of an onrushing train. It features the most significant innovations in locomotive technology, as well as the most important and colorful characters from the history of the iron horse. Thrill to the true story of Casey Jones and his ill fated final journey; was he simply trying to stay on schedule that day--or was he determined to die? Read about the difficulties encountered during the construction of the Cape-to-Cairo Railroad, Cecil Rhodes’ ambitious and still unrealized dream of a trans-African railway. Marvel at the magnetic levitation trains that have the capability of traveling at speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour. With its facts and details, fabulous lore and photographs old and new, this reference brings history to life as never before.
Customer Reviews:
Great for all levels.......2000-07-18
The Encyclopedia of Trains & Locomotives is a great source of information for novices and experts alike. It also includes some very detailed appendices that are unequaled. Overall, it is a wonderful reference for the price
Locomotives, trains, and railroads, all in one book.......1999-03-07
Of all the Christmas gifts I have received, this book has to be one of my favorites. A great many old and new photos and illustrations. Rather than grouped by category, entries are alphabetized as in a standard encyclopedia. A great variety of subjects are covered: the very first steam engine inventors, steam, diesel, and electric building companies, their founders and the engines they built, various car types, track gauges, some famous railroads in North America and other parts of the world, well-known railroad and engineering feats, and more. Appendices list production figures for General Motors/EMD, Alco, and General Electric (what, no Baldwin?), as well as railroad mergers, all up to around 1992 or so. The entry I found most interesting was that on Australia, with its haphazard lack of any coherent rail development, resulting in several different track gauges that proved a real headache in later years.
While not comprehensive (and not claiming to be so), this encyclopedia is a well researched and written reference work, and is certainly a bargain as well. --- Paul H!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent RailRoad (trains) book.......2001-12-28
This book includes photos (or drawings if pre-1800s) of every major train (all countries) from the 1600s to present. It includes specifications, history, charts, and more.
If you can buy only one book on Locomotives (trains specifically) this is a good choice.
This book is specifically on trains, not rail (routes).
XLNT RR Locomotive Book w/ Photos, specs, and History.......2001-12-28
This excellent book is great for Railroad hobbiests, RR History, and for MS Train Simulator (and other train simulators) users.
This book includes every major class of train from the 1600's till present. It includes photos, specifications (date, builder, client, gauge, class, driving wheels, capacity, weight, max speeds, etc), and history.
You can most likely find this book (even hard cover) for $10 on line and in Major Book Stores.
This book is too good NOT to add to your RailRoad Library.
If you have NO books on locomotives and can buy only one, this is a good choice.
