Book Description

Treatment of malignant glioma remains a major challenge for neurosurgeons, neurologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists caring for patients with these tumors. Glioblastoma multiforme, the most common type of brain tumor, is also the most deadly -- only five percent of patients or fewer will be alive at five years after diagnosis. This comprehensive new reference is edited by a renowned team consisting of a neurosurgeon, medical oncologist, oncologic surgeon, and radiation oncologist. The book provides basic researchers and clinicians with a contemporary review of the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of glioblastoma multiforme, and also imparts to experienced investigators outside of the field sufficient background to apply their skills to the treatment of this deadly disease. Expert malignant glioma researchers and clinicians provide state-of-the-art chapters on important topics such as molecular genetic classification of glioblastoma, surgical management, stem cell therapy, chemotherapy, angiogenesis, and more.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars better than giving the answer is to orderly cast the question .......2007-01-09

being a medical oncologist and treating 3 new high grade gliomas a month i find this book important from the point of view that it ellicits questions and sort of points directions towards trends and pathways.
being uptodate is not just having all the information but knowing where and when to use it

5 out of 5 stars GBM an hard work.......2005-02-22

Malignant glioma and especially deadly GBM remains an intractable problem for the neurosurgeons, neurologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists that care for patients with these tumors.
This book has covered all current aspects of GBM by knowledgeable and experienced basic scientists and clinical investigators. Included in this monograph are papers on astrocyte differentiation states and glioma formation (Eric Holand), molecular genetics of GBM (Alice Brown), intraoperative imaging (Gene Barnett), molecular epidemiology (Kenneth Aldape), pediatric high grade gliomas (Alyssa Reddy), surgical management (Fred Lang), FAK signaling (Candace Gladson), imaging of GBMs (Sarah Nelson), chemotherapy (Susan Chang), immunotherapy (John Sampson), viral therapy (Antonio Chiocca), gene therapy (Nikolai Rainov), stem cell therapy (Evan Snyder), angiogenesis (Oliver Bogler), a study of long-term survivors (Peter Forsyth) and a review of radiation therapy and radiosurgery (John Fiveash).
I recommend this well-arranged, concerted, comprehensive book to all my colleagues which may enliven a new horizon of ardour in such a subject of calamitous malignancy.

From the supplier: The patient's viewpoint on stereotactic radiosurgery for primary malignant brain tumors was obtained from interviews with eight such patients using Colaizzi's phenomenological technique. Major themes included the willingness to undergo the procedure again and the lack of discomfort compared to other treatments. The patients educated themselves about the Gamma Knife treatment and asked about the possibility of receiving the treatment. The patients were aware of their diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme and the poor prognosis.
