4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!.......2001-03-31

I found the book instrumental in planning the shower I am hosting, especially since I am a host virgin. The author presents all the tiny details that could go wrong, and those that could make your shower perfect. The checklists and worksheets were beneficial to my planning process; I have the budget, plans, and addresses all written in the book for the shower.

The only drawbacks were the themes and games. Unoriginal. I have heard of all of them and have even played most all of the games. I have created my own theme and games.

The book is divided equally between baby and bridal showers, so I know I will be using it again in a few years... Now I feel totally prepared to give the perfect bridal shower!

5 out of 5 stars I have used it for 2 showers & it worked out great for both!.......2001-01-03

I really liked this book because it did not try to give you so much information just to fill the pages. All of the hints were smart and well thought out, as were the games and recipes. I got a different book for games (it had 200 games in it) and I found only one or two that were perhaps worthwhile. This book doesn't have many games, but I used almost all of them - they are good ones, not a waste of time. I would recommend this to you if you are planning a shower, bridal or baby. I also used some of the recipes and they turned out very good. I think the SOS scallops were the biggest hit. Some of the drinks turned out great too. Good luck to you! Hint: I used the facts that are throughout the book as my questions/answers in "Bridal Jeopardy". Everyone was interested and enjoyed it!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth your money..........2000-11-19

I spent days trying to find websites that would give me ideas on bridal and baby showers (I just threw the bridal shower and will throw a baby shower in about 3 weeks.) It took me so long to find these websites, and they all had the same information as each other. I finally broke down and bought this book - I wish I had done it in the first place. It has UNIQUE games (not silly ones) and a section on money and some great recipes. FYI -I made "Lu's clam dip" on page 88 and it was gone about 1/2 of the way through - it was the biggest hit! I would make a double batch if I were you. I used all of the worksheets too, they helped me organize it. I honestly think this will save you time and is well worth the money. Best of luck throwing your shower!

2 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I EXPECTED :(.......2000-11-17

After taking a look at the whole book, I discovered that this book is truly only helpful to those who have no clue about how to plan a bridal/baby shower (complete idiot's guide). I have given a baby shower before and was looking for some new interesting ideas. I wouldn't recommend buying this book for ideas on games. This book was not worth the amount I spent on it. 'The Baby Shower Book: Etiquette, Decorations, Games, Food' by: Pauline Glendenning is a great book that has everything in it, especially great games!!!

5 out of 5 stars No Rain on this Shower!.......2000-04-14

I found this to be the most helpful book! The author makes everything seem so easy that I jumped right in and tried it (and I don't consider myself crafty at all!). I recommend this to ANYONE planning or even attending a shower of any kind. If the next shower you go to is dull you'll be the life of the party just knowing even one of the ideas mentioned in this book. I'm telling all of my friends!

There are so many ways to embarrass yourself in this world. It's easy enough in your own culture, where you know most of the rules, but when you visit a foreign country, social interactions are fraught with gaffe potential. You could shake hands when air kisses were expected, make eye contact in a culture that deems it aggressive and boorish, or bring a hostess a gift of funeral flowers. Even smiles can be misinterpreted; what may seem like a friendly, open gesture to you can signal anger, embarrassment, or disrespect in other cultures.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cultural Etiquette is a lifesaver for all travelers, especially those attempting business trips on foreign turf. Even before the Guide gets into the particulars of Israel, India, Singapore, and Japan, its "Overview of International Etiquette" offers enough pointers, reminders, and general cultural sagacity to make it worth the purchase, introducing conventions whose norms differ from culture to culture (thereby providing fertile fields for insults and misunderstandings) such as gestures, table manners, dress, gifts, punctuality, and interpersonal space. Geared toward the businessperson, Turkington's guide suggests you dress conservatively, behave with respect, and refrain from telling jokes in languages you barely know. It also points out that it's always worthwhile learning your host country's history, culture, and language before you get there, and recommends obtaining business cards printed in English on one side and the language of the country you're visiting on the reverse.

Most of the book is dedicated to specific cultural phenomena in 26 regions, covering Canada to Latin America, Belgium to Russia, and Taiwan to Saudi Arabia. In Portugal, for instance, dress is formal, small talk doesn't include politics or government, business cards are vital, chrysanthemums are associated with death, and dinner is generally eaten around 8 p.m., whereas in Hungary, punctuality is prized, halo can be used for both hello and goodbye, and you should never chew gum in public.

With her Complete Idiot's Guide to Cultural Etiquette, Turkington offers a major contribution to world peace and compatibility. All you need for avoiding international egg on your face is to read the appropriate chapters in advance and remember never to turn your back on royalty when leaving a room--back up three paces first and then pivot. --Stephanie Gold

Part 5: The Middle East(...)

Includes a glossary, a list of recommended books to read and a list of its contry's embassies including addresses and phone number where you can contact for more infomation.

I rated this book 3 stars because I don't know if everything in this book is correct. So my recommendation is to check out different sources to make sure you know the proper etiqutte if you are wondering about the proper etiquette for that country.

1 out of 5 stars For Idiots, Indeed.......2001-03-02

I'm a German living in the U.S., so naturally, I scanned through the section dealing with Germany. What I found was a list of factual errors and stupid stereotypes. I could not read a single sentence without either cringing or laughing hysterically. It's all so very wrong. I doubt if the author has ever been to Germany, or has ever talked to someone who has been to Germany.

As a positive aside, the title is very descriptive. Follow the book's advise, and people will take you for a complete idiot.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting information, some errors though.......2000-03-27

This is a really interesting book, as it contains cultural information for many places around the world, which you may even find useful for your contacts and trips. However: 1) It is addressed mainly to US citizens and their specific cultural background, and 2) Contains some errors (at least some I could notice about the Greek and the Japanese cultures). So, please enjoy the book, but do not take it as a textbook... Anyway, if I would ever wanted to conduct serious business with an Indonesian (and not a one-time contact), I would spend much more time on investigating cultural issues :)

5 out of 5 stars Good All-Around Primer for Business Etiquette.......2000-03-29

This book covers all of the basics for how to conduct oneself in the business world. Office politics, dining, and social functions are all addressed. The wardrobe section is very helpful, as well. It offers sound clothing advice for both men and women. The women's section is noteworthy in that it gives women the freedom to actually dress like a woman in the office. Too many books of this sort pigeonhole women into the traditional black hole of a dark suit, round earrings, and sensible pumps. The dining section gives advice on being proper, but not stuffy, at the table. There is also a useful glossary on hard-to-eat foods. This book offers useful and practical tips for the seasoned executive and the young up-and-comer, alike. I recommend it to anyone in the business world.

This lighthearted guide takes the tension out of personalizing your wedding!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Too narrow minded.......2005-08-16

The author spoke only from her point of view, which was Midwestern and Christian. She devoted a huge section to church weddings, and a tiny section for any other kind, which did not help me at all. Also, she kept talking about NOT having a wedding outdoors, which doesn't make any nature-loving bride happy, nor does it give a California bride tips on planning her outdoor wedding. Thirdly, this book doesn't include many ethnic or cultural tips and traditions (except for the tiny part on the Jewish wedding). Try the Unoffical Guide to planning your Wedding or the Dummies book instead.

2 out of 5 stars For a Specific Audience.......2000-10-11

The audience for this book seems to be young couples who have not organized social functions. The overriding emphasis is on style, flowers, colors, settings, the entertainment side, having fun, and there is nothing wrong with that. I agree with the other commentators--far too much space is spent telling us to hire an expert to be in charge. If you want advice on themes, flowers, and clothing styles, on what is the "in" thing, this is your book. If you have an idea how to plan events and are looking for alternatives, choices, and simplicity, especially for those over forty, and there a lot of us,look elsewhere. It certainly builds up expectations for a grand event, but with the national divorce rate over fifty per cent, there is an air of unreality and impossible expectations as well. It closely resembles the three glossy publications for Washington, DC, promoting the commercial services to implement these plans. The best part is too brief--the psychology of working with the families and the main players. Also, union musicians cost more and are worth it if you are more interested in the quality of the music than in the experience for high schoolers.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed my own wedding more because of this book........1999-10-21

This book helped me in so many ways. I enjoyed planning my wedding because of this book. It was humorous, informative and had great worksheets. With so many thoughts and ideas flying around in your head when planning a wedding I needed this book to calm me down and bring me back down to earth. I gave this book to a few friends when they were planning their weddings and they loved it. I had a great time reading it. My wedding was more wonderful than I ever thought it would be. Most of the stress was lifted from all the info and humor I rec'd from this book. It was my wedding planning Bible! Although I lent it to friends I always make sure I get it back because reading all the worksheets I filled out brings me back to my wedding day.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......1999-01-18

Though I agree that the "bridal consultant advertising" was a touch excessive, I still found the book to be a lighthearted look at the realities of weddings. I used it in conjunction with other books and it was the only one that lifted my spirit at a time when even happy things become slightly traumatic. This books has done the rounds amongst my friends and family who have gotten married and they all loved it.

2 out of 5 stars An Ok Book.......1998-11-04

I found this book to be a lot of common sense without a lot of fresh ideas. The author is from Indiana and constantly sites examples from that part of the country which didn't help me at all. The constant plugs to hire a bridal consultant become tiresome. I wouldn't recommend this book unless you didn't have a clue about the wedding process.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Broad enough for us Idiots.......2005-05-21

For those who feel this Guide dwells too much on the "obvious" to the detriment of the comprehensive, I might recommend something like the dictionary-size Emily Post's book of Etiquette. But I grew up in the working-class American culture (think trailer parks, country music lyrics, and "po' white trash"). I've made very serious social blunders not knowing unstated "rules" that many (most?) middle-class people believe to be "obvious". Two college degrees did not teach me these rules. Praise God for the Complete Idiot's Guide to Etiquette, which explains the "obvious" with sympathy and clarity.

2 out of 5 stars Not Nearly Broad Enough.......2002-12-14

I was hoping for a reference that would help me in occasional events where I don't feel comfortable with the "social rules". I've had this book for over a year and, way too often, it doesn't answer the questions that come up. The dining guide is good. Otherwise, it's pretty incomplete. If you're new to the American culture and are looking for basics, this is probably ok. Otherwise, find something with much better breadth.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential!.......2001-06-03

This is a wonderful book and essential for anyone who cares how they present themselves to others. Etiquette is a dying art that definately needs a comeback. Email and answering machines have killed the personal written letter and thank you notes. For those of you that think a thank you via email is appropriate, you definately need to buy this book!!!

Worth every penny!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Practical Guide.......2000-02-01

I found this book to be quite thorough while maintaining an interesting and friendly style. Etiquette is still very important in our rather relaxed, modern lifestyles. It is not only for the elite, it if for everyone. It helps us to respect ourselves and others. This guide will help you understand and practice proper etiquette and feel far more comfortable and at ease in almost any social setting. My only misgiving was that it was very American focused (most understandable considering it is an American publication). However, whether you are American or English, there is something here for everyone.

1 out of 5 stars If your goal is to be a SNOB, then buy this book.......1999-12-01

This book is terrible. That lady gets into itty bitty details that would make you look like the biggest snob. I was looking for a broad range of common personal/business situations where proper etiquette is not obvious. SAVE YOUR MONEY and let me know where you find that "great book on etiquette" because I'm still looking.

3 out of 5 stars Great if you have space for entertaining........1999-01-18

This book was an "entertaining" read yet (sorry-pun intended) I felt that there was very little advice for those of us who have small homes (apartments etc) and open plan kitchens, for example. How does one plan a party when your guests will not only see everything you do, but will also be in the way of your doing it? It was fabulous for those who have dedicated entertainment areas and I am sure that I will find it useful once I have moved into a larger home. A good read, though-full of good ideas- and worth buying for its reference value and recipes alone.
